The more I read and rereadthe stories of the personalitiesand families in the Torah, thefirst 5 books of the bible, themore I realize that thefull drama of life is picturedthere for us to learn from. Allthe situations of life are therefrom love at first sight, tomurder, quarrelling brothers,a weak father and overpowering mother,dysfunctional families, theftand idolatry, slaveconcubines, death threats aswell as prophetic dreams anddivine promises. Read allabout it in the book of

Genesis, the whole of life isthere, as good as any modernday novel! Many of thecharacters live self­interestedlives, too impatient to wait forGod to act. But God will actshowing a preferential optionfor the poor: the younger son,the neglected wife, the barrenwoman, the exploited son­in­law. Ultimately God will act insending his son who makespresent the reign of God. Inthese seasons of Advent andChristmas let us allow theword of God, the scripturestories, both console andchallenge us as we face the

sufferings and injustices oflife, the devastation of ourplanet. Let us recall the lastwords of the bible “Come,Lord Jesus” as we await and

expect Jesus to act in ourlives to make the kingdom ofGod present in ourrelationships with oneanother.

How sad we are to begathered this morning to payour final respects to a servantof God, a man whom weloved. The Right ReverendMichael Paschal Rowlandserved his way into ourhearts. He uplifted us whenwe needed it most. Hesupported us and encouragedus. He gave of himself everyday, in many ways, to manypeople, never counting thecost. He was truly a man afterthe heart of God. I have nodoubt this morning that ourformer Bishop was met inHeaven with those wonderfulwords, “well done, my goodand faithful servant.” There isno reason for us to mourn onhis behalf. Our sorrow is forour own loss, our own grief,for we miss the RightReverend tremendously. Imust thank the Bishop ofDundee, the Right ReverendGraham Rose, for allowingme to pay tribute to my oldfriend. Unfortunately, thismorning there is a longscheduled meeting of myParty that could not bepostponed, and I shall needto leave to attend it. But I

asked my office to movemountains to get me here, forthe life’s work of BishopRowland must be honoured.As his friend and one who

witnessed his enormouscompassion, I wasdetermined to pay tribute aswe lay him to rest. The RightReverend Michael Rowlandbegan serving as the first

Bishop of Dundee in 1983,and he served us for 22years. During that time, SouthAfrica underwent a deeptransformation, from politicaland social oppression, intopolitical freedom and thebeginning of social justice. Itwas a turbulent time to servein any capacity in our country,for there was a great deal ofsuffering and hardship, andmany were wounded,physically, psychologicallyand spiritually. In the midst ofit all, Bishop Rowlandunderstood the mandate ofChrist to meet His people attheir point of need. He did notsimply preach on a Sundayand withdraw for the rest ofthe week. Bishop Rowlandinvolved himself in our livesand our hardship. He wasdeeply involved in thecommunity in his Diocese anddid not shy away from theconfrontation when it wasnecessary to protest andassist his people. We recallhow he stood up againstforced removals duringapartheid, keeping homesand families together. Wealso recall how, morerecently, he oversaw thereturn of land to local people

around the Maria RatschitzMission. The rebuilding of theMission in 1996 expressed atriumph of the spirit. Wethank God that today it isoperating and serving thecommunity, fully restored andmagnificent. We also thankGod that the hospice, whichso tragically burned down in2007, continues to meet theneeds of terminally illpatients. Friends, I wassaddened to learn thatBishop Rowland himself hadbecome terminally ill.Although we correspondedregularly, I did not know thathe was ailing. His passingcame as a shock to me. Yetimmediately God’s comfortrushed in and I was remindedof the words of that old hymn,“Blessed assurance, Jesus isMine” –“Perfect submission, all is atrest;I in my saviouram happyand blest, Watching andwaiting, looking above, Filledwith his goodness, lost in hislove.” Michael Rowland and Ienjoyed a lasting friendship,based on our shared faithand our shared work in theliberation of our people.Continues on page 4

Thursday, the 11th Octoberstarted with the Mass ofBlessed John XXIII, thenfollowed Exposition of theBlessed Sacrament throughthe day. The church had beenbeautifully decoratedfollowing the theme of theyear, a boat prow of the shiprepresenting the Church on ajourney through the seas withJesus as the sails of the ship.The flower arrangers also hadtruly outdone themselves withthe magnificent arrangementsin red and white. At 18:30there was SolemnBenediction followed by Massfor the start of the year ofFaith. Families were invited toeach light a candle from theYear of Faith Candle.On the following day thecatechism children wereintroduced to the themes andpurposes of this Year of Faithin the church and each childwas presented with a

laminated copy of the prayerfor the start of this year. Thelocal magazine, the Gazettesent a reporter to takephotographs and interviewthe parish priest on the valueof this year of Faith for thelocal community.On Saturday the regionalmeeting of the CatholicWomen's League with visitorsfrom Dundee began withMass in which the theme ofthe Desert Mothers noting thecall of Pope Benedict , wasincorporated into the Mass. Inthe evening the Knights of daGama had their CorporateMass with visitors fromPietermaritzburg and Durban.This was followed by theinitiation of five new membersand concluded with a greatdinner celebration at whichthe widows of the past GrandKnights of the Council werealso present. The Sundaymorning celebration for the

start of the year of Faith wasa full house with theBraamhoek communityjoining the our own locals.The Regional meeting of theSt Vincent de Paul Societywill be taking place nextSunday commencing withMass with the theme of theyear being continued. As anyear end function on the 7thDecember, a Nativity Playwith the youngest catechismchildren will be held based onSt Francis re­enactment atGreccio of the birth of Jesus.There will be a manger with areal baby complete with liveanimals. It is hoped throughthis to create not only a visualfeast but a tactileremembrance. Thecontemplative prayer groupwhich meets in the presbyteryevery Wednesday eveningwill continue the theme of anew evangelization using theworks of Frs. Thomas Keatingand Richard Rohr. The grottoof our Lady is being restoredand will become a new focalpoint of candle­light

processions. The parish website which is already wellestablished and used bymany of the parishioners willbe publishing monthly articleson the teachings contained inthe Creed. Along with the armbands available from therepository, medals with themeof the Shield of Faith havebeen ordered andparishioners will beencouraged to wear these asa sign of their own

commitment to the renewal offaith. Every month there willbe a different display in thefoyer of the churchrepresenting a particularaspect of our faith journey.The current theme of Justice,Peace and the integrity ofCreation (JPIC) will befollowed by a display ofhistorical Church books andartefacts.

Continues from page 2 ... Wewere of the same age and thesame generation and,although Bishop Rowlandchose a different professionto mine, our goals andperspectives were the same.At the age of 24, whenMichael Rowland wasordained as a priest, I wasmaking the difficult decision toabandon my legal career inDurban to return toMahlabathini to take up myhereditary position as iNkosiof the Buthelezi Clan. Thusour destinies were bothframed a young age.I was

grateful for Bishop Rowland’spresence in Dundee when theANC’s People’s War began inearnest. At that time theChurch was grappling withthe concept of a Just War,which resulted in the KairosDocument. Bishop Rowlandobserved the violence thatswept our country and beganto speak against it. Just as Ispoke in Washington, Londonand Berlin, Bishop Rowlandspoke in Los Angeles andelsewhere, warning thatunless an end was in sight forapartheid, escalating violencewould, in his own words,

“result in the greatestbloodbath the Africancontinent has ever known”. Iwant to honour BishopRowland for all he did duringthe struggle for freedom. I amsaddened when we speak ofthe liberation struggle.Indeed, whatever was doneby our people, whateversacrifices were made, areoften airbrushed out of theestablished narrative infavour of remembering just afew, as though history wasbuilt on the back of thehandful of people.The truth isthat South Africa was

liberated and rebuilt throughthe efforts of countlessunsung heroines and heroes,of which Bishop MichaelRowland was certainly one.We were grateful to God forsending us these heroes. Weare grateful indeed forMichael Rowland. His lifestood as testimony to servantleadership. He preached, heencouraged, and he gotinvolved. I consider himamong the bravest men Iknow. He didn’t just serve for29 years. He gave his wholelife to reflect the devotion ofChrist to the church and to

His people. I shall miss myfriend dearly. Today, I too amwatching and waiting, lookingabove, for I know that I amliving on God’s bonanza.When my time on earth isdone, I will go joyfully to meetmy brothers and sisters whohave gone before. Until then,let us continue the workbefore us so that we too mayhear those wonderful words,“Well done, my good andfaithful servant.”May God comfort us andkeep us, and may the RightReverend Michael Rowlandnow rest in peace.

WORD AND WITNESS: 2013An Advanced Certificate Course in Religious

EducationThe Catholic Schools Office is happy to announce that it will

offer again in 2013 the “Word and Witness” Course.It is offered in direct response to the request from

those who are engaged in the complex and challenging task ofReligious Education/ Catechetics

and who wish to become better qualified as teachers ofReligious Education/Catechists;

or to deepen their commitment to their faith and through it theembodiment of Christian values.

The course is structured as follows:10 workshops, one Saturday a month (08:30 to 13:00)

Reading, written and practical assignments.The venue will be Pax Christi Pastoral Centre.

Closing date for tentative registration is 31 January 2013.The course will commence on the 23 February 2013.

The first thirty to apply will be accommodated.
