grant from the Big Lottery Fund means that we will run another event next year.

Wild Flower Meadow

Cllr Jan Lucas had organised for a wild flower meadow to be sown on the recreation ground. Just before the Family Picnic and Fun Day in September, village children and other volunteers got stuck in to the big job of sowing the meadow. We look forward to a profusion of wild flowers in the spring, and hope the local wildlife will enjoy this new venture too.

Highways

Vehicle Speed on the A445 - Thanks to all who voted for the speed to be monitored on the A445. Our bid was successful and monitoring took place between 19th and 26th September. Recording equipment was placed in two locations. The first was coming into the village from the direction of Leamington at Watery Lane, and the second the opposite direction close to Paget’s Lane. At Watery Lane, the speed of 62,562 vehicles was recorded. 85% were found to be travelling at 47mph or under, and the average speed was 40mph. The fastest speed recorded was 91mph but it was pointed out this could be an emergency vehicle. At Paget’s Lane 66,254 vehicles were recorded. 85% were found to be travelling at 42mph and the average speed was 38mph. The fastest speed recorded was 82mph. We conclude that with these results, speed on the A445 through our village will not be seen as an issue and the Police will take no further action.

White Lines - The Parish Council have asked Warwickshire County Council to improve the white line markings regarding the road bend into the village on Stoneleigh Road. It was agreed that white lines down the middle of the carriageway might encourage

vehicles to stick to the correct side of the road, and not swing out as they round the bend. We have requested that lines are instated through the village around the bend at the top of Lower End and up Spring Hill as well. The work should be completed in the next few weeks.

Speed Watch – The Speed Watch team will be out and about the week commencing 16th October to reinforce the speed awareness of villagers and those passing through.

Fly Tipping – Our area is to be part of a pilot scheme for Warwick District Council who are aiming to crack down on fly tipping. Residents are asked to report any f l y t i p p i n g t o h t t p s : / /w w w . w a r w i c k d c . g o v . u k /i n f o / 2 0 4 6 5 /rubbish_waste_and_recycling/283/flytipping and if possible to take photographs and note times/dates etc. It is very important that villagers do not attempt to remove the rubbish as it could hold evidence that will allow Warwick District Council to prosecute offenders.

Considerate Parking – We have regular complaints from residents in Moat Close and Lower End that a few users of the Village Hall are parking inconsiderately, including blocking entrances to houses and damaging verges. Please report any urgent parking issues to the Police on a non-emergency number and report to the Village H a l l C o m m i t t e e h t t p : / /w w w . b u b b e n h a l l . i n f o /vhcontact.php

If you are hosting a large party or event at the Village Hall, please be sure to remind your visitors to park in the car park – there is additional parking around the back by arrangement.

Street Lighting - Residents can report any problem with streetlights directly to Warwickshire County Council.

Just go to https://customer.warwickshire.gov.uk/MyServices and click on the link to ‘Street Lighting Fault Reporting’. This is the quickest way to report, and you just need the street name and number found on the street light post. If you cannot access the internet, please email [email protected]

Village Christmas Lights Switch

On

The Parish Council is pleased to support the annual Village Christmas Lights Switch On at 5.00pm on Sunday 10th December (see page 19). Thanks to Clive Salt and his team for organising this event which grows in popularity each year.

Local Plan

A group of Baginton and Bubbenhall Parish Councillors and residents, along with CPRE and other parishes in the area, had decided to challenge the extensive removal of local green belt in the Warwick District Council Local Plan by taking it to Judicial Review. Some money has already been raised to fund this (including a pledge of up to £1,000 from Bubbenhall Parish Council). We believed that we had a strong case in that the projected population figures were wildly over-estimated, but we have recently been advised by our barrister that the case is not strong enough, and he would not advise proceeding with it. We have taken his advice, but are still reviewing other options.

Neighbourhood Plan

After some delay, Warwick District Council has appointed Andrew Matthieson as the Independent Assessor, and he is currently examining the Neighbourhood Plan. We expect to hear his comments in the next few weeks. To complete this stage of the plans development the Steering Group will review the comments

Page 3: FUN DAY PAGES10-11 - Bubbenhall · 2017-11-01 · 2 grant from the Big Lottery Fund means that we will run another event next year. Wild Flower Meadow Cllr Jan Lucas had organised

received from the Assessor and then recommend changes to the draft plan as appropriate.

Recreation Ground, Youth

Space and Village Green

Mole activity – Moles have been active on the recreation ground and the Village Green so the Parish Council has funded a local contractor to treat the areas. Mole activity can cause considerable damage to the areas involved, and in can be seen as a health and safety risk as mole hills are a trip hazard.

Play net replacement – The new net is now installed on the multiplay unit. It was professionally installed to ensure complete safety for those using it. The new net is now tethered to the ground, as well as to the unit.

Bubbenhall FC Training - The

Parish Council is delighted that the Sunday morning training session is proving popular and providing a great activity for local children (see page 4). We have agreed that white lines can be painted on the recreation ground before each session to further enhance the training

Youth Summit – Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs (WAYC) are holding a summit to see how best to engage with young people (especially aged 14-18yrs) in our rural areas. Thank you to Cllr Steve Haynes who has agreed to attend on our behalf. If you know of a young person who would be interested in attending, please let Steve know on [email protected].

Dog Mess

We have had a number of complaints about the increase in

dog mess left by dog walkers in our village. The Dog Warden has been alerted and will aim to do some extra patrols in the village. The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 allows a local authority to make an Order requiring owners to clean up after their dog in areas designated under the order. People contravening the Order may be prosecuted through the courts (maximum fine £1000) or given a fixed penalty charge.

Please come to our meetings!

The next meeting of the Bubbenhall Parish Council is 12th December. Please do come and let us know about your ideas and any issues you may have. Meetings start at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

Cllr Sam Baker, Vice Chair

crime scene investigation, table tennis, street art, tie-dyeing and birds of prey experience all added up to a very busy day.

All these activities meant that we had some very healthy ap-petites come lunchtime and a mountain of free pizza washed down with soft drinks were ea-gerly consumed.

Thanks to everyone who helped in the planning and organisation on the day - you were fantastic and without your help the smil-ing young faces wouldn’t have been possible.

We hope you will join us for the event next year. If you would like to get involved in the planning of next years event then please let me know at [email protected].

Bubbenhall Youth Festival

The Bubbenhall Youth Festival in August was a huge success and thanks to the funding re-ceived from the Big Lottery Fund everyone enjoyed the activities we were able to put on. Here are just a few of the many positive comments we received after the event:

“Huge thanks to everyone in-volved for a brilliant day; my two enjoyed every second and loved trying loads of new ac-tivities. From the chaps direct-ing cars at the entrance, the welcome could not have been friendlier and the atmosphere was very special. A proper com-munity day to ensure many happy lasting memories!”

“Just wanted to say the kids and I had a fantastic time at the festi-val today..., fantastic activities, food was amazing...looking for-ward to next year's, the kids es-pecially.”

Young people from the village and beyond attended in large numbers and had the opportunity to take part in free activities that they might not have experienced before. The climbing wall, drum-ming workshop and pottery work-shop all proved to be very popu-lar. Also the football coaching, face painting, music, dance,

Provost Williams Primary

School

September and October are very busy times in any school, but this year at Provost Williams we’ve had a particularly exciting start to the year. The children came back ready to learn and raring to go – as did the staff! Many parents joined us for a Learning Together Morning focusing on reading. Parents had the chance to hear about how the children are taught reading and then join in with some exciting lessons in the classroom.

Other highlights include the Year 1 and 2 topic about the seaside which culminated in a coach trip to the seaside at Weston-super-Mare where the children built sandcastles, visited the Grand Pier and had some chips! Back at

school, there was great excite-ment when Punch and Judy per-formed a show and then the chil-dren had a go at making their own puppet shows.

Year 6 had a very successful week on their residential trip to Culmington Manor in Shropshire.

They challenged themselves to engage in a huge range of out-ward bound and adventurous activities. All the children pushed themselves to face their fears and engaged in all of the activities. The feedback from the trip has been brilliant and it’s cer-tainly created some lifelong memories.

There is lots to look forward to in November and December too, with Christmas performances, a trip to the panto, carols and, of course, lots more learning.

Christmas Recipe from Julie Almond-Topped Mince Pies

Festive Favourites with a rich, sweet shortcrust pastry, finished with a frangipane topping

Prep Time: 40 mins Cook Time: 20-25 mins Temp 190C/170C fan/gas 5 Makes: 24

Ingredients

450g mincemeat

1 tbsp brandy or Armagnac (opt)

Pastry

280 g plain flour; 140g unsalted butter cut in cubes; 4 tbsp golden caster sugar; 1 large egg beaten; 1/4 tsp salt

Topping

140g soft unsalted butter; 140g golden caster sugar; 85g self raising flour;100g ground almonds; 2 large eggs, beaten; ½ tsp almond extract; Flaked almonds; Icing sugar for dusting

1. Put the flour in large mixing bowl with ¼ tsp salt. Add butter and rub in with fingertips until it looks like crumbs.

2. Stir in the sugar, slowly pour in the egg and mix with a knife. Bring to dough using your hands then knead briefly until smooth. Shape into 2 portions, wrap in film and chill for 30 mins.

3. Heat Oven to required temp. Mix brandy with mincemeat. Roll out pastry on a lightly floured work surface until 3mm thick, cut into circles with a 7.5 cm cutter and gently press into non stick bun tins.

4. For the topping, beat together butter and sugar then add the flour, ground almonds, eggs, almond extract and a pinch of salt and beat until smooth.

5. Spoon the mincemeat into the pastry cases (about 1 dessertspoon). Spoon over the topping smoothing to the edges with a palette knife. Scatter over the flaked almonds. (Can be frozen for up to I month at this stage)

6. Bake for 25 mins from room temperature (or 30 mins from frozen) until the pies are golden, risen and pastry feels firm at the sides. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 mins before cooling on a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar to serve.

Bubbenhall First Responders are always keen to look at new ideas that will help to improve the level of service we provide to Bubbenhall in the event of someone having a medical emergency.

We are therefore delighted to announce that over the next few months we will be introducing a new scheme called “Bubbenhall Heartstart”. This will be run in partnership with West Midlands Ambulance Service and a private contact centre called Numbers Plus Ltd.

The scheme will kick into action whenever a ‘999’ call is received by the Ambulance Service saying someone is suffering a cardiac arrest in the village. Using the contact details of volunteers a contact centre will ring a trained individual from the village, ask them to pick up one of the

v i l l a g e ’ s p u b l i c a c c e s s defibrillators (AED) and go and assist at the medical emergency. An Ambulance will still be mobilised to take over the life saving effort with more advanced treatment.

With only a small number of First Responders we are finding it increasingly difficult to provide the medical emergency cover that the village has come to expect and appreciate. Our hope is that with an increased pool of volunteers the risk of no one being available to help when someone needs it most will be substantially reduced.

Now comes the appeal to your public spirit. We are looking for volunteers, who following a half day of basic life support training from West Midlands Ambulance Service, are willing to be contacted and having collected one of the public access AEDs

help save someone’s life by using the AED along with CPR.

If you are interested in helping us to save lives in this way or would like additional information then please send us an email with your details and email address to [email protected]

Memory

Walk Coventry Jubilee Rotary Club held their 2nd Memory Walk in support of the Alzheimer’s Society on Sunday 24th September. Starting from the village hall, there was a choice of two walks, either a stroll around the village, including the church, for 2km or across to Ryton Pools, including a short walk through the woods, for a total distance of 6km. The weather was magnificent and we hope that all those who took part enjoyed their morning. After the walk, soup, a bacon roll, tea and coffee were available for all par-ticipants. Although numbers were less than last year, we managed to give a cheque to the Alz-heimer’s Society that, with gift aid, amounted to £ 700.

Thank you to everyone for their support. .. John Goodgame

By the time you read this we should have enjoyed our family matinee " Jack and the Beans Talk" a puppet show by Garlic Theatre , the first of our Live and Local shows for the 17-18 season. The other show will be on a Satur-day evening 3rd March and we will enjoy SON YAMBU in concert . This should be a lively evening with their music likened to that of Cuban band Buena Vista Social Club so reserve the date in your new 2018 diaries.. Tickets will be available from Margaret Robinson

in the New Year; watch out for the posters and leaflets. These Professional shows bene-fit from arts sponsorship from our District and County councils and The Arts Council England, ena-bling us to have quality perform-ances in our Village Hall without the need to travel. Harvest Festival Many thanks to the flower arrangers who made our churches look so beautiful at Harvest time, and to everyone who gave gifts of flowers and groceries We were able to take a large quantity of food to the Rugby Food bank. Churchyard. The Churchyard continues to look wonderful and is a credit to the village. Thanks to all the people who keep it well maintained. Children at St Leonard’s Church We love having children in our church, and there is always provision for them at our 9.30am services. Bubbenhall families with babies and children are sure of a warm welcome whenever they can join us.

2nd Sunday in every month: Village Worship. The most informal of all our services. We start in the Church Centre (warm and welcoming) with workshop activities for children, and coffee, puzzles and chat for grown-ups to get to know one another. At about 10.00 we move into church for a short and child-centred service. There is no need to be there on the dot of 9.30- people drift in as soon as they can make it.

4th Sunday in every month: Family Service. An all-age service of readings, songs and activities with everybody, young and old, in church together. Children always participate in the readings/ drama sketches etc. and

several people bring instruments to accompany the songs.

At Ryton, we have a robed choir which includes older children (aged about 8 and upwards) and teenagers: anyone whose son/daughter likes singing might consider encouraging them to join the choir. Please contact Barbara Marsh, choir mistress on [email protected] (tel. 02476 304295)

Unfortunately many of you were away for this year’s Fruit, Flower and Produce Show and we had fewer children’s entries than usual. However the day was a great success and we would like to thank all of you who participated. The judges had an extremely difficult job in deciding the winners and I would like to thank them for their time and involvement. Congratulations to all the children who won awards: Amelie Crossan (Best Garden on a Tray), Maya Cassidy, Lucy Randall and Rohan Cassidy (Best Junior Exhibit). In the Domestic Section Julie Veasey won the Trophy for Most Points and Jackie Lloyd for Best Exhibit. There were several people who won Trophies for longest/heaviest vegetables, with Duncan Sibley awarded the Trophy for Most Points in the Growing Section. Best Exhibit in Show was won by Bob Cragg.

We were very grateful for the number of items that were donated to be auctioned, in

addition to the produce from the Show. These included wooden trugs made by Keith Hillyard, a balance bike and pedal tractor from Massey Ferguson and a “mud kitchen” made by Richard Moore – we raised the enormous sum of £881!

On behalf of BVE I would like to say a big thank you for the generous donated prizes, for all your entries and of course for bidding on the night! Following deduction of costs donations will be made towards Village Groups and to Myton Hospice .

Next Event

The Committee is looking forward to seeing you all at the Bubbenhall Carol Evening on 21st December – as always the fantastic Bilton Silver Band will be joining us to get us in festive mood and will be encouraging us all to find our singing voices! Come and join us.

The Bubbenhall 100 Club was set up some twenty years ago to help fund the Village Hall and has contributed regularly to the major refurbishments of the Hall over recent years. Most recently we have made a s ignif icant contribution to the acquisition of the new sound and projection system. If you would like to join the Bubbenhall 100 Club with a chance to win one of the monthly prize draws then there are a few numbers still available. There are four prize winners every month £30, £20, £15 and £10 with

additional draws from time to time. The annual subscription (12 draws) costs £12. We are now trying to do the monthly draws on the first Friday of each month in The Malt Shovel – so please come along at around 9.30 pm if you want to watch any of the draws in person. Results are published regularly in the Bubbenhall Newsletter.

Please email Alan Roe at [email protected] or Bob Cragg at [email protected] to reserve numbers for future draws and to raise any questions about the system.

The girls were not impressed by the Resilience game and we have fed that back to HQ but have had great fun learning how to use a hammer and a screw driver. Most of them were very proud of their potatoes with nails and screws in them. We used these skills to make bird feeders which, with the help of some fantastic parents, we managed to complete in an evening.

We have drawn charcoal portraits as a start to our Artist badge and played a game with Playdoh in the dark, one of the Brownies favourite games. As a start to our Out and About Badge we went for a walk around the Village learning about walking safely. During one meeting we tried out different recipes for making slime which we all enjoyed. One recipe was much better, so our Young Leaders made up a large quantity so the girls could take some home. We finished off this half term with a movie night, watching the Lion King and eating popcorn.

We still need another adult helper on a Tuesday evening. We have a team of D of E girls and Young Leaders who are amazing but we still need another adult helper on a regular basis.

Although the amount of crime we experience in Bubbenhall remains comparatively low, there has recently been some criminal activity within the village and surrounding areas that we should do our best to secure against. I quite frequently see reports from our local police of break-ins to garages, sheds and outbuildings where cr iminals can f ind lawnmowers, bikes and tools which are easy to steal and costly to replace. By fitting additional security to garages and sheds, burglars will find it more difficult to break in and they will have to make more noise doing so. Improvements to locks and securing windows with bars etc. can increase the visual deterrent and reduce the likelihood of garages and sheds being targeted. There have also been some reports of vehicles being broken into and belongings stolen and of vehicle keys being taken by breaking into a house so that the parked car can be stolen from the driveway.

Our local police offer the following vehicle crime prevention advice:

Double check that your door is locked and windows and sun roof are closed.

Don't leave anything on display in the vehicle such as sat navs, loose change or bags. Even if there's nothing of value a thief doesn't know this and by the

time they've smashed your window to get it, it's too late.

If you have a garage, use it.

Consider installing security lighting.

When parking always choose a well-lit area, preferably with CCTV coverage.

K e e p y o u r v e h i c l e ownership documents in your house not in your car.

Think about who you leave your keys with. Do you trust them? Valet parkers, car washers and even some garages have been known to make copies.

When at home keep your car keys away from doors and windows and out of sight.

Check that your alarm or immobiliser is enabled when you leave the car.

For more information and advice on ways to prevent car crime visit: https://w w w . p o l i c e . u k / c r i m e -prevention-advice/vehicle-crime/

If you see anyone acting suspiciously and believe a crime is about to be committed then report it to police on 999. Otherwise use the 101 non-emergency number. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org

Toddlers

We have had a lovely few months with our little friends making memories and partaking in fun activities including: the picnic in the sun; making Fathers day and Mothers day cards; Halloween bats; and growing sunflowers taller than the children. With a vast range of toys to play with and lots of great activities held each week with gluing, sticking and lots of paint we are the perfect place to bring your children, grandchildren or little friends. The Bubbenhall toddler group has been in the village for nearly 40 years but since September we have had a lot of our regular little friends leave for new beginnings at 'big school'. Unfortunately due to the reduced numbers in children this means that we are no longer able to cover the cost of the hall hire fee and we are finding it hard to continue with the group. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE support this group; if numbers don't increase we will have to close. We meet every Thursday morning, from 9:30am – 11:30am. £2 per child will give lots of fun, a drink and biscuit and unlimited tea and coffee for the adults. For more information please contact Lori Slark: 024 76305355

So far this year we have had some fabulous events held within the village, from film nights and musical evenings to picnic and casino nights all of which would not be possible without the help and support of the people of Bubbenhall. We are always looking for new ideas for events and fundraising activities to hold in the village, so if you would like to see a specific kind of event then please let us know and we will be sure to see if we can work our magic and make it happen. Since the last newsletter we have had a very busy schedule with the usual clubs and activities being held, along with the amazing Youth Festival in August. Over 100 young people attended and even the great British weather didn't dampen their spirits. A huge thank you to Steve Haynes and all involved in creating a hugely successful and enjoyable event. September saw us host the 2nd Bubbenhall Picnic in the Park. Over 50 Bubbenhall residents came and participated in many fun games. The competitiveness of the 'grown ups' was very clear to see, with several falls in the sack, three legged, Zimmer frame and egg and spoon races; thankfully there were no major injuries. The final two teams had to battle it out over an obstacle course with the Winning Team – Team Winner- being awarded the Genesis Wealth Creation Cup.

Village Hall Events

Earlier in the year a Casino night was held by Peter Spencer in aid of Asthma UK, to help him raise funds for his place in the London Marathon. He would like to say a big thank you to all who supported him. He raised thousands of pounds for a charity very close to his heart and also completed the London Marathon earlier in the year. Well done Peter. After the success of the earlier Ca-sino night we held another one in October. It was a great success with over 30 people heading to the village hall to play roulette, Black Jack and poker. It was an ideal opportunity to relax with friends and neighbours and enjoy some pretend gambling fun whilst trying to win the most chips. Alongside the casino a raffle and auction was held to raise money for Saying Goodbye UK and the Cancer ward at UHCW. Many thanks to all who came along, your support and do-

nations are greatly appreciated. Film Nights are again in the cal-endar. A special thank you to the Bubbenhall 100 Club for the sub-stantial contribution made towards the improved projection and sound equipment that enhanced the en-joyment of the first film of this sea-son, A Street Cat Named Bob. We had a really good attendance and everyone loved the film. The nights get darker and the weather gets colder which must mean one thing....Halloween. This year we were able to host another Halloween party and we opted for a disco. Children came in their

scariest outfits and danced the afternoon away, with prizes for

the best costumes awarded to Tamsin O'Hare and Zach Rzeznik.

Events this year have been fan-tastic. A Huge thank you to Gene-sis Wealth Creation for their sup-port of many of the events and to all of the people who have at-tended and made them the suc-cess that we hoped they would be. Roll on 2018 for lots more fun. Cate Poolton for the Village Hall Committee

This term at Rainbows we have enjoyed various activities: parachute games; making door hangers; hearing about Anna’s marine biology trip to Cuba; and making our own underwater pictures. We have baked bread and we also went on an Autumn walk around the park and back to the Village Hall for hot chocolate. Firework pictures have been painted and secret surprises planned ready for Christmas.

Mary Long Some of you may only know of Mary through her annual Christmas Appeal for the Dog Rescue at Honiley, but others will remember when Mary was the Village post lady. This photo is from 1998 and was in an article in the Birmingham Post about Bubbenhall (thanks to Jan Tho-mas for keeping it). Mary had been delivering post for 32 years at this time. It was an important year for her, and the Village, because she was awarded an MBE. This was not only because of her long-standing duties as post lady but also because of her service to the community through charity work. This in-cluded raising thou-sands for Myton Hos-pice, and creating The Malt Shovel Social Club, establishing the Boxing Day Walk and auction raising money for Myton Hospice. Al-though she cannot do quite so much nowa-days helping the Dog Rescue is important to our very special villager.

Christmas in Bubbenhall 2017

2nd December, 9.00-11.00

Village Hall

Following last year’s success, Father Christmas has kindly agreed to come along to the Village breakfast.

There will also be a selection of stalls.

We shall be having the usual Boxing Day walk leaving the Malt Shovel pub at 10am and returning by about 12 noon for our usual bowl of soup courtesy of Mark (free for all walkers). An auction for Myton Hospice will be held during the lunchtime. Everyone welcome - please come along and join us. Donations of items to be auctioned will be gratefully welcomed, please leave items at the pub.

Christmas Lights

Sunday 10th December Preparations are well in hand for that special occasion when Bubbenhall again welcomes our very own Father Christmas! He will be arriving on the Village Green close to 5.00 pm and will switch on the lights on the Green. He will also bring his favourite reindeer with him, who will be in the charge of Mrs Christmas. Will it be 'Donner' or 'Blitzen'? From around 4.30, while we await his arrival, we will be throwing our custom-ary welcome party centred on the bus shelter. As in previous years, there will be music, mulled wine and drinks for the younger guys and gals. There will be mince pies, made and provided by village folk, PLUS the return of last years' surprise - samosas! Numbers have grown year on year, so come early! After Father Christmas has performed the lights switch-on, he will lead us on his journey through the vil-lage, with carols and lights. There will be Carol song sheets - so bring your torches. Do come along, bring your friends and celebrate together to give our village a wonderful welcome to Christmas! 4.30 Switch on your own Christmas lights and begin to gather on the Village Green for music, drinks and mince pies and samosas. 5.00 Father Christmas arrives at the Village Green and switches on the Christmas Lights, meets the chil-dren (and adults!) and poses for pictures. 5.30 Father Christmas leads the procession through the Village, to finish at Santa’s Grotto at the Malt Shovel Pub.

Winter Work Program off to a

flying start!

An unusually high number of Corporate Volunteer groups during September and October has meant that we have been able to really crack on with the Winter projects. This is always an ambitious list, and volunteer assistance is crucial to enable us to carry out many of these tasks. Four groups from Jaguar Land Rover have transformed the look of the park adjacent to the Bubbenhall pedestrian entrance. They have cleared bramble and high pruned trees to create a more open and welcoming entrance to the park. The other key objective to this work was to create a second ‘overspill’ den building area that general visitors are able to enjoy when Children’s Wood is booked for an event or party. There is still some chestnut paling fencing to go up alongside the path, and we hope to make a start on laying the hedge at the back over the course of the winter .

Bubbenhall Pool has also been given some attention, where encroaching bulrush has been reduced and marginal vegetation added to improve the overall habitat.

We have had many positive comments from visitors about this work and hope you agree that it has made a s ign i f i c an t improvement to this part of the park.

Heritage Lottery Fund

T he P r i nce t ho r pe L i v i ng Landscapes Project, of which we are a partner, includes a number of exciting projects for Ryton Pools. The first of these has begun with improvements being made to the path behind Pagets Pool leading out onto Pagets Lane. As well as upgrading the path this has also enabled us to open up some beautiful views of Pagets Pool.

This HLF part-funded initiative, led by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, will also include a ‘Bush Craft Shelter’ in Children’s Wood, site interpretation and an iconic Straight Tusked Elephant

sculpture. These are all designed to make more of the important paleontological history of this area (as revealed by numerous fossil finds unearthed during quarrying).

We hope you enjoy your Winter walks here.
