Welcome to the latest issue of ‘Newslink’ which is delivered quarterly to every dwell-ing in the parish. If you know of anybody who is not receiving a copy, could you please advise the Parish Clerk. If you are a new resident, we wish you a very warm welcome and, if you have not already received a copy, please pick up a ‘Welcome Pack’ at Barrow Post Office. Since our last issue, we have said farewell to Sarah Cox who has been Parish Clerk for the past two years. Sarah has now moved on to other employment and we wish her well in her new role, and thank her for all her efforts and hard work on behalf of the Parish. Sarah’s replacement, Kat Bowe, took up her post on the 15th August and we wish her well as she settles into her new job. Kat grew up in Barrow and has a good understanding of the village and the community. Contact details for Kat are on the back page. One issue that continues to dominate the agenda, and my in-box, is traffic. In particu-lar, ‘speeding’, by both car and tractor drivers. In respect of the heavy tractors that drive at excessive speeds throughout the parish, conversations have taken place with the landowners that employ the drivers and they have promised to caution their em-ployees to take more care and drive considerately. Sadly, some individuals seem to take no notice, so if anybody is able to provide me with registration numbers (difficult I know when they are travelling at speed), I will follow it up. More generally, the Parish Council are very aware of the problems of ‘traffic and parking’ and we continue to discuss this with both the Police and the Highways de-partment. However, some of the issues relating to speeding, and parking, particularly near Barrow school, could be improved if people were just a little more thoughtful. Barrow and Denham are not particularly large villages, and the majority of our roads are very narrow. I would urge everybody who is a driver to think about their speed and perhaps slow down a little, before we have the unenviable task of dealing with a serious traffic accident. With the schools re-opening after the summer break, this is particularly important. Our speeding problem has been helped by the introduction of flashing speed restrictions signs, which we share with other villages; thanks also go to those who give up their time on a voluntary basis as part of ‘Community Speedwatch’. Every little helps! Another matter that dominates the parish in-box, is the poor state of some of our roads. The Parish Council have expressed your concerns to Suffolk County Council highways department, and to our County Councillor, Terry Clements. Despite this, we have not been able to persuade the county to spend money on much needed im-provements, but we will continue to chase them on your behalf. Finally, can I remind you that the Parish Council meets on the first Monday of each month (except January and August) at 7.15pm in the Village Hall. We welcome mem-bers of the public to our meetings and individuals and groups do have an opportunity to raise matters of community interest before we begin the formal business of the meeting. If you do wish to raise an issue it is always helpful if you can contact the Parish Clerk in advance, so can make sure we allocate appropriate time for discus-sion. Barrow Book Exchange

Barrow Book Exchange on Brittons Road has continued to be a magnet for book lov-

ers in the community over the past six months. It has also “remembered” several im-

portant public dates such as the Queen’s 90th Birthday or William Shakespeare’s

400th Anniversary. On 16th July it also marked its own first year with a PAINT-THE-

KIOSK event and several budding artists produced paintings of the kiosk which will

be used in BBE posters in the coming months.

We have experienced a deluge of adult fiction and non-fiction books in recent weeks,

but very few children’s books have been donated and we would strongly encourage

parents to urge their offspring to return some of the books originally found at the BBE

and/or to donate any unwanted children’s or YA books from their shelves.

An active group of volunteers continue to manage the kiosk and store surplus boxes

of books in their garages. With this in mind we encourage visitors to swap only two

or three books at a time. Charity shops such as RSPCA and OXFAM in Bury St

Edmunds are very pleased to absorb these larger book donations.

BBE supporters will be able to respond to questions and offer suggestions on this

community project via feedback forms which will be available throughout September.

If you’re interested to see pictures of the life and times of the BBE please click on the

following link: www.facebook.com/barrowbookexchange. We welcome pictures and

posts from all visitors.

Good Neighbours Scheme

The Good Neighbours provide occasional services, such as lifts to the West Suffolk Hospital, the surgery, the post office, hairdresser, etc, minor DIY jobs/repairs, or help to fill in forms, to people in need in our community.

All these services are totally free, but when a lift is involved, then 40p per mile (present rate) is charged to cover the driver’s costs. We also hold regular coffee mornings so that both help-ers and users can meet for a chat. We hope you saw our floral display on show in the church during the recent flower festival, which is always a fine community event.

Please volunteer to help – especially for jobs during the day or to hold the phone.

If you would like to volunteer your services please contact us via the helpline number.

If you’d like our assistance, ring the helpline number and leave a message – the phone-holder will get back to you to take details and arrange the assistance.

Please allow at least 3 days notice.

BARROW & DENHAM WILDLIFE

CONSERVATION GROUP

DO YOU KNOW OF ANY POTEN-

TIAL WILDLIFE PROJECTS OUR

GROUP COULD GET INVOLVED IN

LOCALLY?

DO YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS OR

COMMENTS ABOUT WILDLIFE IN

OUR AREA?

We are developing our new village nature reserve called “St Mary's Na-ture Reserve” (adjacent to St Mary's church in Denham Road). We have had several successful work parties there, clearing pathways and the pond. This Autumn it is planned to dredge the pond in order to open it up and make it more attractive to both wildlife and visitors.

The reserve is worth visiting as it is a lovely tranquil spot with much bird life and an attractive pond to look at. We are shortly planning to install a bench seat by the pond. We have had a talk on spiders at the reserve and we plan to do a dragonfly survey there and also a hedgerow survey around the village.

Any suggestions for wildlife projects / events or any volunteers to help us will be most welcome –- please con-tact Derek Woodhead on [email protected] or phone 01284 811120

Barrow Beer Festival 2016

So summer draws to a close and we reluctantly look forward to a damp and dreary English winter. Before the dreariness begins though, we have the annual Barrow Beer Festival to lighten the mood!

This year’s Barrow Beer Festival will take place in the Barrow Village Hall from 3.00pm on Saturday 1st October. A stunning line-up of 20 beautiful beers and ciders has been meticulously selected for your enjoyment and wine and soft drinks will also be on offer.

A splendid Hog Roast will keep you there all afternoon and into the evening so you will have no conceivable reason to go home and you can stay with us until the messy end.

The Barrow Beer Festival is purely a fund-raising event to boost the funds of the Village Hall and your support and generosity is greatly appreciated. Of-fers to assist with the running of the Beer Festival on the day will be grateful-ly accepted and anyone wishing to lend a hand should please contact either:
