El Ombú de Areco, an historicalestancia (ranch) just over an hour's drive fromdowntown Buenos Aires, is located in San Antoniode Areco, birthplace of the gaucho tradition. TheLate-Colonial style mansion, built in 1880 byLieutenant-general Pablo Riccheri, offers visitors amagnificent setting for an unforgettable day out.The main house is surrounded by a covered gallerytypical of the late-Colonial period, with a richlytiled floor and cascaded steps that lead into the gar-dens of the park. Presiding majestically over thepark is the estancia's namesake, the great ombú(Phytolacca dioca), a plant as characteristic of thepampas as the baobab is of the African savanna.Nearly as ancient as well: gauchos have been hitch-ing their horses to the estancia's ma in ombú forover a hundred years. There is no more fitting description, asthousands of visitors to Iguassú each year will testi-fy. Once seen, the falls - all 275 of them - are neverforgotten. The two-mile wide curtain of watercrashing 300 ft over a series of precipices into aspray-filled gorge constitutes the most spectacularsight of probably the whole of South America. The train terminal is at CentralStation, some 400 mts away from the main gate.Here is where the first leg starts and you can eitherride the train or take a 20-minute easy walk alongSendero Verde (green trail). Both ways will get youto Cataratas Station, the starting point of the UpperCircuit. The Upper Circuit is a half-hour walk alonga 1200 mts trail – with low degree of difficulty andno stairs – that goes deep into the jungle. All of asudden, you run into breathtaking views of theFalls. You will get lots of closer views at the diffe -rent observation points, and more panoramicsights toward the end of the trail. The LowerCircuit requires more physical effort due to itsstairs but it can be perfectly done if you take it niceand slow, catching your breath on the differentviewpoints. The Upper Circuit is a half-hour walk alonga 1200 mts trail – with low degree of difficulty andno stairs – that goes deep into the jungle. All of asudden, you run into breathtaking views of theFalls. You will get lots of closer views at the differ-ent observation points, and more panoramic sightstoward the end of the trail. The Lower Circuitrequires more physical effort due to its stairs but itcan be perfectly done if you take it nice and slow,catching your breath on the different viewpoints.On this trail you will also walk deep into the jungle,crossing streams and coming across local fauna.The Lower Circuit goes all the way down to theriver, where the boat crosses over to San MartinIsland. On the way down, there are balconies withmarvelous bottom-up views of the falls (the samefalls that you see from above in the Upper Circuit).If you have any physical impairment, stay awayfrom this last section. DAY 10: BUENOS AIRES / IGUASSU FALLS Transfer to the airport to fly to Iguassu Falls. You aremet on arrival and transferred to your hotel. Longbefore the Spanish explorer Don Alvaro Nuñesreached South America’s greatest waterfall in 1541,the local Indians had named it Iguaçu - meaning

great waters. Once seen, the falls - all 275 of them -are never forgotten. The two-mile wide curtain ofwater crashing 300 ft over a series of precipices intoa spray-filled gorge constitutes the most spectacularsight of probably the whole of South America. This afternoon, enjoy a walking tour of the falls fromthe Brazilian side. Cross the border into Brazil andproceed into the national park. A trail winds towardsthe falls populated by contis, long-tailed racoon-likecreatures. At its end, an elevator provides speedyaccess to a viewing platform at the foot of the falls.Focal point of the falls, best seen from above, is theDevil’s Throat, a horseshoe-shaped gully in mid-stream, over which seems to pour most of theIguassu River. DAY 11: IGUASSU FALLSExplore the falls from the Argentine side either byriding the train or by talking an easy walk alongSendero Verde (green trail). Both ways will get youto Cataratas Station, the starting point of the UpperCircuit. The Upper Circuit is a half-hour walk along a1200-meter trail – with low degree of difficulty andno stairs – that goes deep into the jungle. All of asudden, you run into breathtaking views of the Falls.You will get lots of closer views at the different obser-vation points, and more panoramic sights toward theend of the trail. The Lower Circuit requires morephysical effort due to its stairs but it can be perfectlydone if you take it nice and slow, catching yourbreath on the different viewpoints. On this trail youwill also walk deep into the jungle, crossing streamsand coming across local fauna. The Lower Circuitgoes all the way down to the river, where the boatcrosses over to San Martin Island. On the way down,there are balconies with marvelous bottom-up views
