Official Matchday Programme | Fulham U18s Vs. Bury U18s - 14.12.15
G ood evening and welcome to Motspur Park for tonight’s FA Youth Cup tie against Bury. Two seasons ago
Fulham made it all the way through to the Final for the first time in our history, losing 7-6 on aggregate to Chelsea.
Members of that side included Moussa Dembélé, who scored in both matches. Emerson Hyndman, George Williams, Cameron Burgess and Patrick Roberts (now at Manchester City) all subsequently made First Team appearances.
The man in charge of that successful side was Steve Wigley who returned to Fulham as Under-18 Head Coach in June. His side were last in action just over a fortnight ago when Southampton were beaten 3-2 at Motspur Park. Josh Walker (2) and Stephen Humphrys were on target for Fulham as the Whites
moved up to fourth in the table. The Southampton victory was
Fulham’s fourth successive win, a run which has seen the team score no fewer than 16 goals. With Bury also in good scoring form we may well see the net bulge a few times tonight.
Leading scorers for the Whites this season are former Bury youngster Humphrys and fellow striker Walker, who have both netted eight times. Dennis Adeniran has also weighed in with half a dozen.
Bury play in the Football League North West Youth Alliance and are the reigning champions. They have once again been in excellent form this term, aside from an early season blip when they sustained three consecutive defeats. Recent results include a 4-0 home win against Rochdale and away successes at Port Vale (3-0) and Walsall
(2-1). They currently sit top of the table. This is the third season in five in
which the Shakers have reached the Third Round. Last season they lost 1-0 at Manchester United at this stage of the competition. Bury set-up tonight’s tie courtesy of two fine 4-1 away wins at AFC Fylde and Scunthorpe United.
In the First Round tie at Fylde things remained pretty tight until just after the break with Requarn Crosdale’s early goal levelled by the hosts before second-half strikes by Nathan Turner (2) and George Miller won the game. Miller was the man who then proved the match winner at Scunthorpe, netting a hat-trick, with the other goal scored by Khalid Mohammed.
Jack Ruddy and Rhys Williams are the current Bury Under-18 goalkeepers. In front of them they have the composure of central defender Matty Foulds and the tall presence of Liam Williams. Turning defence into attack along the flanks are full-backs Sam Gibson and Rowan Kimmins. There is also the versatility of Cairon Best who can operate at left-back, centre-half or on the left wing.
The Shakers have a variety of midfielders who all bring something different to the side. The tough-tackling Jamie McCarthy breaks up opposition moves, while Robert Bourne operates more as a holding midfielder. All-action Jake Durham can be utilised in a number of midfield positions, whilst First Round marksman Crosdale is a skilful youngster with an eye for goal. Mohammed is a box-to-box player who is a good distributor of the ball. Central midfielder Will Osgathorpe could also feature tonight.
Strikers Miller and Turner have already been in good goalscoring form in this year’s competition. Miller, though, is often a provider of goals, whilst Turner is an old fashioned centre forward. Jesse Arizie may also feature.
Following tonight’s game, our Under-18s are back in Motspur Park action this coming Saturday (12pm) when Norwich City are the visitors.
