Hitlers BodygUard

Hitlers Tird Reich was riven with actions and empirebuilding, so it is no surprise to learn that he had both an SSbodyguard, Leibstandarte SS Adol Hitler (LSSAH), and armybodyguard, part o the Grossdeutschland regiment. WhenGermany attacked Poland at the start o the Second World

War, Hitler (known as Der Fhrer, Te Leader) sent LSSAHto the ront and increased the strength o the Fhrerbegleit(Leaders Escort) Battalion so that it could escort him on atour o the ghting in Poland.

FigHtingintHe eastand expansion

In 1943, the Fhrerbegleit (Leaders Escort) Battalion wastripled in size, sending detachments to ght with Grossdeut-schland (now a powerul elite Panzergrenadierdivision) onthe Eastern Front, and orming the Fhrergrenadier(LeadersGrenadier) Battalion as an outer ring o security around hisheadquarters in East Prussia, the Wol s Lair.

Ater the disaster o the Soviet Operation Bagration Oensivein June and July 1944, Hitler decided to expand the Fhr-ergrenadier Battalion into a our-battalion panzer brigade.Tis powerul unit was intended to oil an anticipated Soviet

corps-strength airborne landing to capture Hitler in the Wol sLair, now only 100km (60 miles) rom the ront lines.

Te anticipated parachute landings never took place, but by20 October 1944, a renewed Soviet Oensive threatened to

cut o East Prussia, and capturing Goldap, just 8km (5 miles)rom Hitlers headquarters. Te FhrergrenadierBrigade wassent in to retake Goldap, alongside 101. Panzerbrigade(seethe article in Wargames Illustrated295 or on www.amesowar.com or more on this ascinating unit).

Ater stabilising the situation, the FhrergrenadierBrigadewas withdrawn rom the ront and combined with the Fhr-erbegleitBattalion to orm two new brigades. Te Fhrerbe-

gleitBrigade (FBB) took the experienced rst battalion as its

PanzersilierBattalion (mounted in armoured hal-tracks)and the relatively new th battalion as its Panzergrenadierbattalion (mounted in amphibious Schwimmwagen jeeps).Tese were combined with a veteran panzer battalion romGrossdeutschlandthat had just nished rebuilding, and twobattalions o the Fhrer Flak Regiment (Hermann Gring)that protected the Wols Lair rom air attack. It later addedthe 200th Assault Gun Brigade (reormed ater its destructionin Normandy), 828thLandsturm battalion (men aged over 45used to guard unoccupied parts o the Wols Lair), and anartillery battalion. Te resulting brigade was stronger thanmany o the surviving panzer divisions, and drew many o its

personnel rom the elite Grossdeutschlanddivision.Tis let the FhrergrenadierBrigade (FGB) with the rela-tively new third and ourth battalions as its Panzersilierand Panzergrenadierbattalions, although it retained its ownpanzer battalion. Like FBB, they also received an assault-gun

o protect him as he toured the Polish battleeld at the start o the Second World War, Adol Hitler ormed a special escortbattalion recruited rom Grossdeutschland(Greater Germany), the German Armys equivalent to the Queens Guard at Buck-ingham Palace. As the war progressed this escort grew in strength until it reached a size o two brigades (essentially a ullarmoured division). Both brigades took part in Hitlers climactic attempt to reverse the tide o the war in the West, the Battleo the Bulge.

despite heavy losses in the Grenadierbattalion, but they were

too late. Te Americans had escaped, although hal o theirmen were missing and much o their equipment lost.

Te brigade pushed on westward ater the retreating Ameri-cans, ghting several skirmishes with rearguards as theyadvanced. Tey soon ound themselves at the rear o theretreating American column and tagged along, moving at agood pace until discovered. Te resulting ght was one-sided

with the Americans losing a dozen more tanks and a vitalbridge.

Bastogne

Christmas Eve was spent marching westward to join a dier-ent corps or an attack to the north west towards Namur onthe Meuse River. Te Christmas Day attack on Hotton, therst objective, had just go under way when Remer receivedorders to suspend the attack and move to Bastogne to closethe road link opened by the 4th Armored Division, surround-ing the town again.

When they arrived on 27 December, they ound the weak-ened 26thVolksgrenadier Division barely holding its lines.Te FhrerbegleitBrigade launched several attacks over thenext ew days, but soon ound itsel struggling to avoid beingsurrounded in turn by the 11th Armored Division attack-

ing around its let ank. Heavy ghting continued until10 January 1945 when the order came to withdraw back toGermany.

FHrerBegleit BrigadeandtHe BattleoFtHe BUlge

Te FhrerbegleitBrigade was still orming when the GermanArdennes Oensive began on 16 December 1944. Te bri-gade joined the ght on 19 December when it ound St. Vithstrongly held and resisting attempts by the 18thVolksgrenadier(Peoples Grenadier) Division to capture it.

An attempt by the Panzersilierbattalion and an assault-guncompany to take St. Vith rom the north east was oiled bythe deending US 7th Armored Division the next day, and thebrigade spent 21 December gathering its battalions, strungout along the muddy road back to Germany, together ora concentrated eort. Meanwhile both the Panzergrenadierbattalion and a regiment rom 18th Volksgrenadier Divisiontried to cut the road into St. Vith rom the northwest withoutsuccess, although another regiment broke into St. Vith itsel.

Leading the Panzersilierbattalion himsel, Oberst(Colonel)Remer, the brigade commander, attacked again at midnight,supported by two assault-gun companies, two tank compa-

nies, and the artillery, but quickly ound the going impassablein the dark and a rising snowstorm. Dawn saw the attackrestarted, and it was a race to cut the roads out o St. Vithbeore the American deenders could escape. Dawn o 23December saw the FhrerbegleitBrigade astride all roads out,

Germans threw a regiment rom the 79thVolksgrenadierDivi-sion into the ray as they arrived, while the Americans piledon tanks and artillery to support their inantry. Another dayshard ghting orced the Germans out o their positions.

Te Fhrergrenadier Brigade pulled back across the river,meeting up with its Grenadierbattalion, hoping to hold thecrossings, but were thwarted by the ast-moving 26th InantryDivision who established three bridgeheads across the riveron 27 December. Fortunately or the brigade, the 79thVolks-

grenadierDivision was holding against 80th Inantry Divisionon the right (eastern) ank, leaving the brigade acing oagainst just one American division.

For three days the two divisions enced, the Americans seek-

ing weaknesses to exploit and the Germans counterattackingwith the surviving tanks, backed up with rocket launchersrom an army artillery battalion. By 30 December, the Fhr-ergrenadierBrigade had been pushed most o the way backto the vital crossroads o Wiltz. With their inantry strengthalmost gone, the brigade handed over its positions to the 9 thVolksgrenadier Division (not beore making one last coun-terattack to halt the Americans ater they captured an entireVolksgrenadiercompany!), and withdrew into reserve.

witHdrawalFromtHe ardennes

Te FhrerbegleitBrigade was selected to act as the rearguardand ought a number o delaying actions until, nally on 23December, orders came to go into reserve and reorm as a ullpanzer division. It never reached its intended strength beoreit was thrown back into battle on the Eastern Front.

FHrergrenadierBrigadeandtHeBattleoFtHe BUlge

Te FhrergrenadierBrigade took longer to orm, and did notenter combat until ater St. Vith had allen. Its rst mission

was to assist the 5th Parachute Division holding the ank easto Bastogne. Te brigades Panzersilierbattalion and, twocompanies o tanks and a company o assault guns arrivedat Eschdor and Heiderscheid, south o the Sre River on 23December, only to lose a company stationed orward at Grev-els when the US 26th Inantry Division attacked at dusk.

Meanwhile, other elements o the 26th Inantry divisionattacked Eschdor, while the lead elements o 80th InantryDivision attacked Heiderscheid in a conusing night battlethat cost the brigade its commander. On Christmas Day the

I he joins a Panzersilierkompanie, he hasan Sd Kz 251/1 D hal-track or transport, otherwise he has a Schwimmwagen jeep or transport. Remer uses the Mounted

Assault special rule (see page 243 o the rulebook).

CharaCteristiCs

ForwardsKnowing the value o speed and surprise, Remer constantlypushed his men onwards.

Regarded as a dashing and competent leader,Remer was given the prestigious commando the elite armoured inantry o I. Bataillon,Panzergrenadierregiment Grossdeutschland in

December 1942. His rst task was to rebuild hisdevastated battalion ater the brutal winter battlesin the Lutchessa Valley. Remers rst battle withhis new command was Kharkov in May 1943. He

was awarded the Knights Cross and promoted toMajor or the leadership he displayed. ypically,he credited the award to the bravery and skill ohis men.

Remer went on to lead his battalion through theBattle o Kursk, winning new respect or both himand his men in the process. I. Bataillon was alwaysin the oreront o attacks, with Remer at theirhead earning the Close Combat Clasp in Silveror 48 assaults, and the Wound Badge in Silveror eight wounds in combat. In November Remer

was awarded the Oak Leaves or his KnightsCross, the 325th German soldier to receive thiscoveted award, or outstanding accomplishmentsas a commander during the summer months.

In March 1944, Remer was transerred to thehighly sought ater post commanding Wachbatail-lon Berlin, the battalion responsible or guardingthe German capital. He was instrumental in oil-ing the coup attempt ollowing the 20 July ploton Hitlers lie. Hitlers gratitude resulted in animmediate promotion to Oberst and commando the Fhrerbegleitbrigade, a new ormationormed rom Hitlers military escort.

Under Remer, the Fhrerbegleitbrigade acquitted itsel wellduring the unsuccessul Battle o the Bulge in December1944. When his brigade was expanded into the Fhrerbe-gleitdivision, Remer was promoted again, this time to Gen-

eralmajor. At 32, he was the youngest German General othe war.

Fighting to the last days, Remer ended the war in an AmericanPOW camp ater escaping the advancing Russian armies.

Te brigades Panzersilier Bataillon is small, but welldesigned. Each company has its own heavy weapons platoon.

With anti-aircrat guns, heavy machine-guns, mortars, andassault guns, the heavy platoon gives the company the toolsto tackle most problems. Te platoon is rarely used as a singleunit. More normally, components are assigned to Panzer-silierplatoons as needed.

A Heavy Platoon may make Combat Attachments to FhrerPanzersilier Platoons and uses the Mounted Assaultsspecial rule.

Each Sd Kz 251/1 D (Stuka) hal-track res a bombard-ment completely separate rom the rest o the Mortar Platoonusing the Stuka zu Fuss rules on page 245 o the rulebook.
