Byrne impresses at Donington The Paul Bird team enjoyed a strong race at round 9 of the 2014 MCE British Superbike Championship at Donington Park with Shane 'Shakey' Byrne adding two more 2nd place finishes to his haul of podiums. Triple MCE BSB champion Byrne was again in excellent form on his Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R and, having already sealed his place in the showdown, the objective was all about pick-ing up as many vital podium points as possible to carry a decent advantage over his rivals into the final three rounds of the season. However, the Isle of Sheppey-based Londoner found fellow triple champion Ryuichi Kiyonari (BMW) a tough nut to crack and eventually had to settle for two 2nd- place finishes behind the Japanese star. In front of a big crowd, there was little to separate the two riders in either of the two 20-lap races, with the duo never more than half a second apart. ‘Shakey’ led for much of the first race, but the pair traded places on numerous occasions towards the end, with the Japanese rider eventually taking a narrow win. In the second race, the BMW rider led from start to finish despite ‘Shakey’ putting him under intense pressure throughout. Again there was little in it, with less than half a second separating the two riders after yet another hard fought race, leaving Byrne with a decent consolation of his 18th podium out of the 19 races run so far. 37-year-old Byrne heads to the next race in Assen on 562 points, 26 ahead of Josh Brookes on 536, who in turn is one ahead of Kiyonari (535). Zdeněk Buchta rides his success If proof was ever needed of the exceptional quality and high performance level of FUCHS Silkolene products, look no further than the best results of long-time customer Zdeněk Buchta. The Czech rider races in the Off-Road National Marathon competi-tion series in the Moto E1 category behind the handlebar of a Kawasaki KX 250 F. He won four consecutive races in the Off-Road National Marathon and is currently leading the champion-ship with 100 points. “I used the FUCHS Silkolene COMP 4 SX OFF-ROAD and I am perfectly satisfied with its performance. It gives very good wear protection for the engine, even under very heavy loads during racing”, explains the rider. His son Michael races in same category and currently sits in 5th place with his Suzuki RMZ 250. He also uses FUCHS Silkolene products.

Racing for the same team, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup of An-dreas Weishaupt, Adam Christodoulou, Anders Fjordbach and Tim Scheerbarth was not so lucky. Once again, the quar-tet put in a strong performance in this class, but the team was out on slick tyres when the Nordschleife suddenly became incredibly slippery and Tim Scheerbarth became a victim of the conditions. The result for the team was a wrecked radiator and they had to stop the race. The car driven by Ivan Jacoma, Manuel Metzger and Christian Schmitz also had an extremely turbulent time of it. In the first part of the competition, the drivers lost several minutes due to a small collision and the resulting tyre damage. The team nev-ertheless kept on top of the adverse weather conditions and temporarily even dominated the race. The drivers finally pas-sed the chequered flag in 2nd place in the production class. The two Porsche Carrera drivers, Gerwin Schuring and Philip Dries, have attracted a lot of attention throughout the year due to their constant improvements, even in the most difficult conditions. The duo completed an almost perfect weather test at the Nordschleife and finished 3rd in their class. Hopes of a top result for the Porsche Cayman driven by Jürgen Bleul, Jean-Louis Hertenstein, Panagiotis Spilliopoulos and Sören Spreng were dashed as a competitor made a mistake and crashed into the rear of their car. Despite the loss of time due to the repair, the Cayman team managed to move up again in the chaotic weather conditions. When the chequered flag finally came out, the team was in 5th place in the V6 class. The team used the new “0W-20 XTL” FUCHS Engine Oil.

Exciting battle in the rain for the Black Falcon team The ‘rain games’ of the 6h Opel-Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen, known as the highlight of the VLN Long Distance Championship season, provided a lot of excitement for the five cars of the Black Falcon team, all competing towards the front of the 183-car field. Their performance was not always rewarded by the changing weather conditions in the Eifel, but the team nevertheless performed well and were celebrating their suc-cess by the end of the event. The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup driven by Willi Friedrichs, Marcus Löhnert, Tobias Nell and Andreas Ziegler had a good race and was closing in on the leaders until they slipped off the track. However, the crash was minor and the only thing hurt was the team’s time. They kept their cool and in the end were able to claim 3rd place on the podium.

Kaolinwerkrennen: a strong impact for FUCHS Silkolene The Kaolinwerkrennen 2014, one of the biggest Enduro races, takes place every year by a small village called Aspang, near Vienna. The event is organized by Bernhard Spitzer and his staff of around 100 people, who welcomed over 1,000 bikers. All of the riders, racing in a total of nine classes, started together, putting on a spectacular display as they sped through this varied and challenging course. Sometimes they cross through forests and over gravel roads, sometimes they hurtle down or climb steep slopes. The competition is fierce in this intensive five-hour race, spread out over both days of the weekend. FUCHS AUSTRIA SCHMIERSTOFFE, sponsor of this event, was on-site with a unique stand, from which they showcased all the wide range of FUCHS Silkolene products. At the awards ceremony, Markus Kollenz, Application Engineer, handed out FUCHS Silkolene products* and goodies to the top 15 racers and presented the FUCHS-Group to the public. *FUCHS lubricants: Silkolene COMP 4 SX SAE 10W-40, Silkolene COMP 2 PLUS, Silkolene PRO CHAIN, Silkolene ALL-IN-ONE

Loch and Morgenstern seize the crown Christian Loch and Patrick Morgenstern of the FUCHS/Penske Sportwagenzentrum Porsche Zentrum Mannheim team won the 2014 AvD Heldentour. This historic car rally started one year ago as the successor to the legendary race “2,000 km through Germany”. This major event, organized by the Automobile Club of Germany, lasted for four days and took place on four famous race-tracks: Hockenheim, Zolder, Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürbur-gring. The competition was rounded out by a hill climb race and several time trials. After a 1,600 km drive on country roads and 400 km of circuit, the Loch/Morgenstern duo won 1st place in the time trial regularity class. This podium comes after their recent 2nd place at the Le Mans circuit (FUCHS Motorsport News - Au-gust), achieved in their Porsche 356 A 1957. “We faced no prob-lems with the car thanks to FUCHS products”, they said. “We crossed through beautiful countryside in Belgium and Germany, which we would have never seen otherwise and the race tracks were fantastic.”

The Porsche 356 Pre A 1957 was lubricated using FUCHS products: TITAN UNIVERSAL XT SAE 20W-50 and TITAN GEAR MP SAE 80.

In great shape! Piet Bakkes and Shaun Visser of the Accident Guru Toyota RunX team finished second in the S2000 Chal-lenge of the fifth round of the SA National Rally Championship. “We were superbly prepared for this rally”, said Bakkes. “Our car was perfectly suited to not only the sandy and fast stages but also the techni-cal and rough elements found on many of the 14 spe-cial rounds. We managed to sort our small issues – the fuel injector for example – and keep the car going throughout the 180 km of tough and very dusty condi-tions.”

A climb to the title Expectations were very high for Lance Isaacs for the 5th round of the Super-GP Champions Trophy at the Durban Airport racetrack, especially following his victory in East-London earlier in July. “As soon as I did my first couple of laps around the circuit I knew that it wouldn't be an easy proposition for me when the emphasis was on the braking of our bike”, explained Isaacs. In the open practice, qualifying tests and qualifying laps, the Black Swan team dedicated their best efforts to setting-up the bike and found the solution. However, there was not enough time to make any adjustments between the sessions and Isaacs was unable to improve on his position. He started the first race in 6th place.

As the lights turned green, Isaacs used his experience and talent to clinch second position, allowing him to put pressure on the race leader. However his brakes started to give up again and gradually he had to drop back from his opponent, eventu-ally crossing the line in 2nd place. For the other 25-lap battle, the bike was equipped with fresh brakes and Isaacs took a sec-ond podium. After a small mishap at the start of the race, he had to work hard to take 3rd place. Unfortunately his brakes started to play up again and Isaacs had to work to secure his place on the podium. “Despite all the problems, I’m happy with the double podium. I’ve managed to move into 2nd place in the championship and claw back five points from the champi-onship leader!”, he enthused.

Jay Newton shines bright on the Cresson racetrack The 1.7-mile (2.7-km) track at Motorsport Ranch in Cresson – Texas – was revisited by the CMRA on 23 and 24 August, for the eighth round of competition in 2014. The track was raced anti-clockwise this time and Jay Newton of the JAB Motorsports team was ready to race as this is his favorite direction for this track. Lone Star Track Days hosted the practice session for racers and street riders alike and Newton was anxious to get on the track. The 16-year-old Texan tested the Dunlop spec tire in an attempt to get the best possible set-up on his Kawasaki ZX-6R (636). This was an undeniable challenge for this rider who will race in four series during this event. His first race was on the C Superstock. Newton launched his JAB Motorsports Silkolene Oil Kawasaki ZX-6R (636) off the line hard and was running in the top three. The bike was visibly sliding the rear though and he dropped to 5th place where he would ulti-mately finish. After some suspension and chassis magic performed by Brandon Spradling, Newton was ready for the Formula 1 Expert class. Coming from row 2, he rocketed from his grid position at lights out and made his way to 3rd position. It’s worth noting that he is the youngest racer to ever podium in this class and the first Rookie Expert to do so as well.

For the C Superbike race, Newton had an incredible start and rode a stellar race. Being hard on the brakes and hard on the gas earned him another 3rd place finish at the checkers and another personal best lap time. On the Heavyweight Rookie Expert series, Newton had another great departure and quickly started pulling away from the field. He secured his third podium of the weekend, on the top step of the box in 1st place.

“The extreme heat was an issue that had me a bit concerned, but our FUCHS Silkolene products kept my motor safe and it ran strong all weekend”, explained Newton.

JAB Motorsports uses and recommends the following FUCHS Silkolene products: Silkolene PRO 4 SAE 10W-40, Silkolene PRO CHAIN, Silkolene PRO RG2, Silkolene FORK OIL SAE 5W and Silkolene PRO PREP to keep their bike looking like new.

Lasagni still leading the Ginetta G50 Cup by Yokohama The Ginetta G50 Cup by Yokohama was sponsored by FUCHS LUBRICANTI S.P.A. for the second consecutive year and has once again attracted large numbers of spectators and media. This mono-brand competition has been holding fans spellbound since the beginning of the season back in mid-May at Misano. The third round of the season took place at the Paul Ricard circuit in late August and has counted towards the standings in the GT4 European series. The Italian Manuel Lasagni is a big favourite for the Ginetta G50 Cup by Yokohama and is leading the series with three wins in the first four competitions in 2014.

After two rounds, he confirmed his arrival on the French circuit with teammate Alessandro Bonacini of the Rangoni Corsica team by taking 2nd place in each of the two events. This good performance was enough to put them in 3rd in the GT4 Euro-pean series*. The winner of the first race of the Ginetta G50 Cup by Yokohama was a team composed of two very young drivers, the Spaniard Tineo Arroyo Salvador and the Finn Jess Anttila, who finished 4th in the GT4 European series. On the other hand, the Argentine Fran Viel Bugliotti and his teammate claimed 3rd and 1st place on the podium of the Ginetta G50 Cup by Yokohama. All these drivers will be challenging oppo-nents for Manuel Lasagni and Alessandro Bonacini during the fourth round, which will take place on the German Nürburgring course. The final event will be a homecoming for Lasagni and Bonacini, taking place on the Monza circuit on the 25 and 26 October.

*The GT4 European series is a competition of 25 cars, including 15 Ginetta cars. The drivers of the Ginetta G50 Cup by Yokohama race in both series.
