Why Lithium- ion ESS?

Energy Storage System (ESS) as a key requirement of Renewable Energy and its size varies on two dimensions:

POWER How much electricity can be discharged at one time?

ENERGY How many hours can be discharged continuously?

Lithium-ion batteries are better suited for small, neighborhood-scale storage scattered at key stress points and play a key-role in future energy storage- especially in decentralized grids and households.

Micro-grids present the opportunity for countries to develop a cell-phone type of model for power distribution whereby regions without certification can have a regional power source that allows for local access.

This market is projected to become signification in the next several years, as the access to lower cost PV markets this option more easily implemented.

Goals of Smart Grid

These may reflect the gradual progression to a Smart Grid, but may also be due to challenges with homeowner adoption and effective use of feedback systems.

1. Operate as a 24/7 background processor to manage in an intelligent manner electrical energy usage in homes or small businesses.

2. Exploit the flexibility that consumers generally have in the timing of their electricity usage to induce changes in their electricity consuming patterns through time-varying electricity pricing.

3. Manage energy consumption profiles to reduce peak electric demand and reduce consumers’ electric bills.
