Honey’s Happenings…

Are you looking forward to spring as much as I am? Bring on the warm weather! Bob Olson, Nominations Chairman is coordinating our Chapter’s slate of officers for the 2015-2016 APICS year. This slate will be approved by the Colorado Chapter Board of Directors and will be presented at the April 8th Professional Development Meeting where we will ask Chapter members in attendance to vote on the nominations. Spring cleaning is underway, and several special editions of our Chapter’s The Front Range News, came to light again, including my favorite…. A copy signed by the esteemed, George Plossl, one of the founding-fathers of APICS body of knowledge. I also found an article written by Mr. Plossl in February 2000. What caught my attention was his wrap-up after comparing two companies’ diverse (and ineffective!) planning strategies. Mr. Plossl closed with these comments: “Characteristically, they don’t know what they don’t know and many don’t believe they need to learn. My greatest ‘success story’ clients have been led by executives who opened their minds, learned and profited by their new experience. The challenge of the next decade for APICS, counselors and consultants, academia and other educators in our field is to get more middle and top managers fully qualified to run their operations better with the powerful new tools now available.” After more than a decade, he is still correct. If you are ready to pursue your certification in CPIM or CSCP or you have a group of folks looking for APICS education, check the schedules listed in the newsletter or contact Roger Harris, VP of Education, for details. April is an exciting month for our Colorado Chapter Programs! We have two great Professional Development Meetings in store for you, and a plant tour. Look for details in the newsletter and register soon! We look forward to seeing you this month! As always, please let me know if you have questions or comments regarding our Colorado APICS Chapter. Best Regards,

Honey Johnson, CFPIM, CIRM, C.P.M., CSCP President, Colorado APICS Chapter 81

The Seventh Annual Charles K. “Chuck” Nelson

Student Paper Contest 2015 For many years, APICS sponsored the Fogarty Student Paper Contest through the Education and Research Foundation. In 2008 the E&R Foundation and APICS discontinued the program. The Terra Grande District (Region VI) and the Heartland District (Region V) have worked together to sponsor The Charles K. “Chuck” Nelson Student Paper Contest District competition. As many of you know, Chuck Nelson was a great leader in APICS and especially in the Terra Grande District prior to his passing away in 2007.

We recently completed the five CPIM courses, and had people from all areas of the supply chain enrolled. In a fast-paced, evolving field like Operations and Supply Chain, it’s important to stay informed with new practices and ideas. APICS allows busy professionals to gain important knowledge and skills while only committing a couple hours a week at class. It’s all possible because of the dedicated instructors that make learning easy with their passion to teach and real-world expertise.” Ben Osenbaugh, Fluid Transportation Logistics Specialist, WhiteWave Foods Company

What are Students saying about APICS Education in Colorado?

I recently obtained the APICS CSCP certification which has equipped me with greater knowledge and understanding of the evolving field of supply chain management. The Instructor-led APICS Learning System offered by Colorado Chapter 81 helped prepare me for the exam by providing a platform to acquire, discuss and solidify key principles and terminology for current day business operations. I highly recommend this class-type setting, as you will learn as much from the dedicated instructors as from your fellow industry-wide classmates. Tom Baird, CSCP, Compliance Manager, Safilo Group

“CPIM is a worthwhile investment in yourself and your career; it played an integral part in me getting a new job and promotion in this tough economy. I recommend it to any person working in the material management/SCM career fields….kudos to the APICS Colorado Chapter 81.” Ward Jones, CPIM, Planner, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company

“I recently completed my APICS CPIM course on Saturdays & have got to say it was very enjoyable. I’d recommend the Saturday classes to anyone. At first thought, I was a little concerned about taking a day out of the weekend, but that intensive training does seem to focus the mind a little better than I think evening classes would have done. I found the experience of the instructors to be invaluable especially when trying to relate to real life situations.” Cliff Shepard, Procurement Manager, RMD KWIKFORM

“I was able to take and pass the CPIM exam suite with the help of the courses offered by my local APICS (Chapter 81) organization. The detailed review of their materials allowed me to pass each exam at the first attempt. Class discussion and the real life examples of the concepts helped my understanding enormously. I subsequently took the CSCP classes and just passed that exam last week. The bi-weekly classes were key to my success. I feel well prepared to handle the challenges of the fast paced Supply Chain environment!” Caren King, MBB, CSCP, CPIM, Program Manager, Supply Chain Operations, Seagate Technology

“I am a supply chain professional with nearly 20 years of experience, and I decided to take the CSCP exam to affirm my knowledge and identify any gaps. I highly recommend the CSCP course as an effective and efficient method to prepare for the exam. I took the exam within two weeks of the last class and passed with confidence. The classroom format works very well with five Saturdays spread over a few months allowing for time between classes to catch up on reading. All of the instructors were more than willing to share their personal experience and answer any questions about the content. The interaction and examples from fellow classmates from different industries kept it interesting and real. Also, the variety of instructors, each with solid supply chain experience, was a bonus. Based on my class experience, I've recently enrolled in the CPIM course.” Mike Kingzett, PMP, SCOR-P, CSCP, Global Manager Supply Operational Excellence, Orica Limited

"Between the classes, the material, and preparing for the exam, I learned a ton that I can apply to work. I am fairly new to Supply Chain, just 4 years, so this experience has been extremely beneficial!" Randy Sullivan, CSCP, Sr. Manager, SCM Planning & Forecasting, Supply Chain Management, DirecTV

Our partners at the World Trade Center Denver, a trade association concentrating on growing trade to and from the Rocky Mountain Region, are hosting the 42nd Annual World Trade Day Conference on May 19th at the Ritz Carlton, Downtown Denver. There are incredible keynote speakers lined up, including Jeff Seeley, CEO of Carew International, and Damien Levie, Head of Trade and Agriculture, for the EU Delegation to the United States. Governor Hickenlooper announces his exporter of the year at this event as well.

This year's theme of "Advancing Colorado Around the Globe," is showcasing global opportunities for Colorado's Advanced Industries (aerospace, advanced manufacturing, bioscience, cleantech, electronics, engineering and architecture, and information technology). A global finance and supply chain simulation will allow all participants to apply your skills in a hands-on, learning environment to be the best team to turn around the ROI of a European firm. Each of the six dilemmas that the tables will work through will be introduced by visiting global representative to give the audience a true, global experience. Forty other international delegates will be attending the conference as well and business-to-business meetings will be arranged.

The World Trade Center Denver is offering a special discount to all members of APICS, to attend at the World Trade Center Member Rate. Early-bird pricing will be recognized until April 24th at $150 for the entire day. To access this special rate, which is $50 off the non-member rate, please enter the coupon code: WTCpner2015 Register here: http://wtcdenver.org/event-1863294

Education Update We have started the spring sessions of CSCP and CPIM. Both classes are going well. Thank you to Hunter Douglas and DirecTV for allowing us to use their fantastic training facilities! Exam Credits are only good for 6 months now, so don’t order them from Lois until you are ready to take the exam, this way you always get “fresh” exam credits. We did not have any new CPIM’s or CSCP’s attend the PDM in March. Remember, a new CPIM / CSCP that attends a PDM is recognized for their accomplishment and receives a certification lapel pin and a crisp $100 bill. There were no takers for these $100 bills I am holding! Please let me know if I can help you in any way with your APICS Educational needs.
