This year s carnival was certainly no excepon as we were greeted with near cyclonic condions (katabac winds I am informed is the meteorological term). I am confident that if anyone watched the dedicated group of staff, who were there early to set up tents, they would be convinced that we were quite mad. This certainly proved correct as the tents were pulled back down more quickly then they went up as the wind connued to wreak havoc (for the record we only destroyed 1 marquee despite rumours that suggest otherwise). Despite these deplorable condions both our students and staff embraced the day with such a posive atude that it certainly provided some respite from the windy onslaught. It really is intrinsically rewarding for all staff when our students connue to impress on these occasions. I have had numerous conversaons with staff, members of the community and the pool who were impressed by the calibre of our students. Congratulaons to all involved. I would also likely to publicly acknowledge the contribuon of Marlin Coast Swimming Club president, Mr Todd Olds who worked relessly for the school and provided countless drums of chilled water for our students. Thank you for all your efforts. Also to our amazing tuckshop ladies, Kerry, Karen and Cath Olds who catered for our staff on the day providing some delectable treats. ELLIS EAGLES BREAK A 6 YEAR DROUGHT!!! The mighty eagles soared high and defanged the Clifton Cobras who had a clean sweep of our 3 major inter house carnivals last year. Yes folks the first major carnival of the year is all washed up with our 37th annual swimming carnival being taken out by Ellis House (full summary below).

It never ceases to amaze me how Smithfield State High School (SSHS) students and staff will rally together and make a situation – which has the potential to go very very pear shaped- and turn it into in an absolutely memorable event. This year’s carnival was certainly no exception as we were greeted with near cyclonic conditions (katabatic winds I am informed is the meteorological term). I am confident that if anyone watched the dedicated group of staff, who were there early to set up tents, they would be convinced that we were quite mad. This certainly proved correct as the tents were pulled back down more quickly then they went up as the wind continued to wreak havoc (for the record we only destroyed 1 marquee despite rumours that suggest otherwise).

Despite these deplorable conditions both our students and staff embraced the day with such a positive attitude that it certainly provided some respite from the windy onslaught. It really is intrinsically rewarding for all staff when our students continue to impress on these occasions. I have had numerous conversations with staff, members of the community and the pool who were impressed by the calibre of our students. Congratulations to all involved.

I would also likely to publicly acknowledge the contribution of Marlin Coast Swimming Club president, Mr Todd Olds who worked tirelessly for the school and provided countless drums of chilled water for our students. Around the Grounds

    Upcoming TCN Trials

Our school sporting teams are enjoying their starts to the inter school season and have been working hard with their coaches through lunch time trainings.

Our major competitions at present are our Year 7 and Year 9 rugby league teams, our junior netball side and junior football team.

Our Year 7 side have bounced back after suffering a heavy loss to Woree SHS in round 1. In the past two rounds our young team have piled on 66 points and only conceded 8.

The Year 9s have less teams in the competition and have played only the one fixture, a tough encounter against St. Mary’s. After looking unsettled early on the boys steadied before finishing the job with a 4 point victory 18-14.

SSHS’s junior netballers enjoyed their first game of their season with a home game against St. Andrew’s CC. The match was a tight affair with scores remaining within 1 point for the first 3 quarters however SSHS were unable to sustain this in the last quarter eventually going down 18-10.

  • Athlete Profiles

Page 4 From The Sport’s Desk

This year the school will look to regularly profile some of our talented athletes in our school and gain a further understanding about who they are and what makes them tick.

First cab off the rank is our 2019 Sports Captains Claire and Elton - Check out their radio interview on Coast FM on our Facebook page

    NAME: Claire

Sports played: I’ve played a variety of sports throughout my life from, rugby, touch, soccer, swimming and currently netball.

Interests/hobbies: Definitely coaching my junior netball team.

Album/song you are loving right now: My current favorite song is Talk by Khalid.

What would your personal theme song be? Can’t hold us by Macklemore.

What animal best suits you? A panda (lazy but adventurous).

Something most people don’t know about me is? That I was born in Perth and I’ve moved 5 different times so far in my life.

    NAME: Elton

Sports played: I currently play soccer while also training on track running and distance running. I play futsal for the school in tournaments and used to play fully competitively until I decided to branch out and specialize in a sport.

Interests/hobbies: I play soccer for Southside Comets as a defensive midfielder in the premier men’s team.

Album/song you are loving right now: I’ve been listening to the into the Spider-verse soundtrack for a while and recently J Coles’s new single Middle Child.

What would your personal theme song be? Hands down gotta be Drake started from the bottom.

What animal best suits you? Probably a wolf in my eyes as Bozkurt means grey wolf in Turkish and I feel like I stand for what a wolf stands for. Stronger in numbers, brave, fierce and not something that should be taken lightly.

Something most people don’t know about me is? My parents initially wanted me to play AFL but at the first training session I threw a tantrum so they moved me to soccer, which was the right move.

Goals for this year: Complete a clean sweep in my senior years as being senior sports person of year and beat Mr Yeabsley’s soccer team.
