If you do that Facebook thing or you have friends who love to circulate “interesting articles,” “inspiring stories,” or mediocre jokes via the email, you may have seen Jay Michaelson’s essay in the September 16 addi- tion of The Forward. The essays title: “Why You Shouldn’t Go to Synagogue on Rosh Hashanah This Year.” In his essay, Michael- son suggests, if we are looking for a meaning- ful, engaging syna- gogue experience, we can do much better than the High Holy Days. Sukkoth, which follows immediately after the Days of Awe, Tu B’shvat in the winter season, even weekly Shabbat observance all offer something more sub- stantial and meaningful than a Holy Day observance, that is, in his words, “an epic fail.” He cites three reasons for this epic fail. First he points to the faulty theology under which few if any of us operate. Who really believes that anyone is actually “inscribed in a book” that determines our fate? Then the celebration of Rosh Hashanah tries to walk a line between celebrat- ing the “birthday of the world” and the sober- ing task of beginning a ten day period of serious self- examination. Finally, Michaelson points to the pageantry which lends a shallowness to the whole High Holy Day experience. Rabbis and cantors practice like it’s a “bar mitzvah with receding hair- lines.” And the congre- gation judges every- thing from fashion statements to sermon worthiness. “This is consumer Judaism at its worst: customers guilted into experiencing a mediocre product. It’s Judaism at its least interactive, least kines- thetic, least engaging. It’s more show than service.” Ha! I love it! His hon- esty and candor, albeit a bit over the top, strike a nerve. Nevertheless, we get dressed, and we show up. The High Holy Days are “big business” and we don’t mess with them. And we certainly don’t want to miss them. It is far better to see and be seen for yontuf. There are those who were seen last year, but are seen no more. And we miss them. We don’t want to be seen this year and be seen no more. they are cracked up to be, but we don’t messwith them. Count us in. Let the record reflectthat we were present.

Amid the “insincere sincerity and mass-marketpackaging” of the High Holy Day season, thereis only one thing according to Michelson thatstands out: the Shofar.

“While the liturgy is prolix and verbose, theShofar is wordless. Where the theology of RoshHashanah is a mess, the primal call of the shofarcan be a shattering experience, packing thou-sands of years of history and pre-history intoone inchoate cry. Where Rosh Hashanah is aday of infantilizing mediation, the Shofar is viv-id and immediate. It calls to you, personally.

Would that all of my congregants were soundersof the Shofar. What a cacophony of ear twistingnoise it would be if every member of the congre-gation who was able, responded antiphonally toevery call of the shofar. The mighty sound ofTekiah, the broken call of Sh’varim, the stutteringalarm of Teru’ah, and the overwhelming rush ofTekiah G’dolah.

In that moment, in the crescendo of a roof-raising Tekiah G’dolah, we could feel the worldhealing just a little bit.

More than any of the other mitzvot(commandments) connected to Rosh Hashanah, the most important is listening to the sound ofthe shofar. Franz Rosensweig, one of the greatJewish thinkers of the 20th century, was about toconvert to Christianity and made what hethought would be his last visit to the synagogue(for old time sake) on Yom Kippur in 1913. Heheard the sound of the Shofar. The experiencechanged his life. He never converted. We con-tinue to feel his influence in the 21st century.

If you let it, listening to the sound of the shofar, can change your life as well.

Debbie, Stephanie and Naomi join me in wish-ing all of you a New Year filled with blessing, joy, good health and peace.

Allison Nathan Getz - Temple Emanuel President

I am at a loss for words to say how much I appreciate our con-

gregation and community for supporting our 3rd annual Rabbi

Samuel Rosinger Humanitarian award dinner. Please indulge me to

thank our incredible committee: Mindy Eisen – logistics; Emily

Wheeler – print materials and city liaison; Cheryl Barenberg – pre

movie reception and dinner menu along with Iris Nathan; Marilyn

Manson Hayes – framed Rosinger quotes; Beverly Hickman Hay –

video; Gene Thomas & Lori Alter – chauffeurs for our speaker;

Ania Bender – crystal award; Rita Davis, Robin Goebel, Marsha

Hoffer – decorations and set up; Wayne Margolis; and our in-

credible Temple family Jane Kaulfus and Wilton Allen. It was an exceptional oppor-

tunity to honor Bishop Guillory. His thoughts and reflections that evening were just

beautiful and we are blessed to have him in our community. We sold 75 tickets to

the Rosenwald showing in addition to the 300 we mailed with the reservations for

Thursday night. Our speaker was spectacular! Stephanie Deutsch led an informative

Q & A session after the viewing of the movie, lectured the history and broadcast jour-

nalism classes at Ozen High School the next day, and gave a moving speech at the

dinner. She was a delight to host at our home and I look forward to reading her

book. If you ordered one (after she sold out) I will let you know once I receive them.

We don’t have the financials all in yet but it was a successful event and I am appre-

ciative to all of you!

The High Holy Days are upon us and I look forward to seeing everyone in the next 2

weeks. The Rabbi and Angela have been working on a very meaningful and spiritual

service. My thanks in advance to the Temple Board of Trustees for providing the

oneg reception, our Brotherhood ushers, and our congregants for being a part of this

poignant time of year.

Our next Religious School immersion weekend will be the weekend of Sukkot

(October 21-23). Please join us for the Sukkot dinner and Havdallah to celebrate this

time together.

We truly enjoyed our visit with ISJL fellow Elias Chajet in September and appreciate

the effort he has exhibited writing the curriculum for Religious School. We also

welcome back to Beaumont the Petitt family.

Please sign up for the Mahj tournament chaired by Laura Thomas on October 30th at

9 a.m. She has chaired each event we have had and we look forward to another

great day of fun.

Temple Emanuel October 2016 Social Justice Update

P 4 T E

Our 2016 Temple Emanuel Journey is based on President Allison’s theme: Together in Tradition; but the TempleEmanuel Social Justice Committee thinks of it this way:

Together in Tradition through tikkun olam.!

The focus of the Temple Emanuel Social Justice Committee is to provide tangible ways that the membership ofTemple Emanuel will translate Torah into the action of helping those in need in Southeast Texas and beyond. Westrive to make a difference as part of Temple Emanuel Love Thy Neighbor in the area of tikkun olam.

TESJ Project #4: The Orchard has been the subject of investigation for months. The TESJ Committee decision at theAugust meeting is to focus on proper care for the established fruit-bearing trees in The Orchard. Gene Thomas will con-tinue working with A&M Extension Service: to have established trees marked for pruning and/or removal, organic fertilizeradded, and have the A&M Extension Service offer a simple plan of where to plant two satsuma trees and where to place apotential bed. We have a tradition of planting in The Orchard to feed the hungry!

TESJ Project #7: Disaster Relief is ongoing; and as we personally know from Hurricane Rita, needs change. Here arethe ways that we as a congregational family can help Baton Rouge flood victims:

1. Individual donations can be mailed directly to Beth Shalom Synagogue and/or Congregation B’nai Israel and/or theBaton Rouge Jewish Federation. 2. Checks written to the above that are sent to Temple Emanuel will be mailed from theTemple Office OR 3. Donations can be made to Temple Emanuel Social Justice for Disaster Relief and TESJ Chair willmake certain that the funds are shared. We have a tradition of helping others when faced with the need for DisasterRelief!

TESJ #8: Family Box Day at Southeast Texas Food Bank happens the second Saturday of each month. TESJ Commit-tee encourages volunteers to participate either in Family Box Day or in any other ways at the Southeast Texas FoodBank. Once a volunteer at Southeast Texas Food Bank, updates are shared from the Food Bank via email about weeklyand monthly volunteer opportunities. We have a tradition of volunteering at Southeast Texas Food Bank!

TESJ Project #10: High Holiday Food Drive for Southeast Texas Food Bank and collection of money for MAZONand/or money for Southeast Texas Food Bank from Friday September 23 to Tuesday, October 25…from just prior toSelichot through Sukkot! THANK YOU to Jane and Wilton for preparing the bags that we will each take home to fill…according to the SETX Food Bank Wish List. Rita Davis is taking the lead on this! We have a tradition of helping thoseserved by the Southeast Texas Food Bank and by MAZON!

TESJ Project #11: Nutrition & Services for Seniors - Fall Harvest for NSS and/or boxing of shelf stable meals onTuesday, November 29. This will be a joint project between Temple Emanuel and TEAM Deliver the Difference of NSS.Please let Jane in Temple Office know that you plan to help. We have a tradition of helping the senior citizens ofSoutheast Texas!

TESJ Project #12: Christmas Day at Some Other Place with 9:30 arrival as per Paula O’Neal, SOS Executive Director. Please let Jane in Temple Office know that you plan to help. We have a tradition of providing service at SOP onChristmas Day!

THANK YOU from Temple Emanuel Social Justice Committee

The Rosinger Award dinner was another great success. A special thank you to everyone that contributed to

the planning and execution of this event and the showing of the movie Rosenwald. An extra special thank

you to our honoree Bishop Guillory and our speaker Stephanie Deutsch.

The topic of education touched on in the Rosenwald story, resonated with me. Something I have always

told my children is that one thing no one can take from you once you acquire it is the knowledge gained

through your education. I personally feel that the Jewish tradition to educate our children and the resulting

literacy of our ancestors in a mostly illiterate world contributed a great deal to the survival of our people and

our religion. It remain true today that one of the major keys to upward mobility is a decent education.

Unfortunately this is something that is strongly lacking in many of our inner cities today throughout America,

similar as it was unavailable to the African American population in the rural South in Rosenwald’s time. We

must find a way to provide a quality education to all citizens of our country, no matter who they are or where

they live.

Our next Brotherhood event is: Build the Sukkot at 10 am on Sunday, October 16th. Please make plans to

join us in this Mitzvah for our congregation.

May all of us be inscribed in the book of life

We anticipate fill dirt and ground leveling work will be commenced at and near the cleared land at therear of the developed portion of Hebrew Rest Cemetery and in some low areas in both Hebrew RestCemetery and in Kol Israel Cemetery, and to the limited extent reachable by the contractor’s equipmentwithout serious disruption or adverse effect to existing tombs, markers, stones and monuments.

Weather, and mobilization of equipment, fill dirt and labor permitting, we anticipate this work willcommence soon after the High Holidays, and are confident the contractor will do his best to minimizeinsofar as reasonably possible any unsightliness and inconvenience involved. Our Congregants andCemeteries Visitors’ attentiveness, patience, cooperation and understanding is requested.

“Ketivah v’chatima tovah” to all (which I think translates in ‘Southeast Texan’ as “A good inscription andsealing in the Book of Life, Ya’ll”),

Welcome Fall! Well maybe not so much here in Southeast Texas. But once again we are allenjoying football games, the High Holidays and pumpkin spice everything.

A big thank you to Ken Parker who hosted Havdallah. And many thanks to Lori & Brian Alter whograciously hosted our ISJL fellow Elias Chajet. Our Religious School Weekend was underway andthe kids enjoyed learning and worshiping together.

We had a fantastic turnout for the film Rosenwald and an amazing time at the Rosinger Humanitari-an Award Dinner. Many thanks to everyone who put so much time in making this a huge success.

Our Opening Luncheon was held on Sept. 21. Rita Davis provided us with a delicious Italian lunch.Thank you to Kathy Johnson, Sherry Horwitz and Lois Rutman who helped prepare and coordinateas well. Our guest speaker was John Hughes from Ford Park who was very informative and provid-ed us knowledge of the entertainment business and tourism around the Beaumont area.

Please remember on Oct. 30 we will have our MahJongg Day of Fun. Contact Laura Thomas if youcan help volunteer. Feel free to invite anyone who plays and wants to join in the fun. Beverly is col-lecting door prizes so please get them to her.

Sarah Thomas is coordinating our Break the Fast for Yom Kippur on Oct. 12, 2016. A sign upsheet is going around and we will need volunteers to help set up and clean.

Lets all wish Cynthia Wolf a big Mazel Tov on her becoming “The Women of Valor” honoree for theWRJ Southwest District. She will be honored at the WRJ District Biennial in November. A donationhas been made in her honor by Sisterhood for the program Tribute Book.

If you know of any congregant or family member that is ill, please contact Lois Rutman, 892-3255,or [email protected].
