Rosalie wanted no farewell; however she was talked into returning to school last week to be officially farewelled. In addition to gifts from P&C members, canteen helpers, staff and students, Rosalie received Life Membership of the Parents’ and Citizens’ Association. The descriptions of Rosalie include: professional, dedicated, caring, supportive, friendly, energetic and steadfast. The Mansfield State High School community is very grateful for the efforts of Mrs Buzzoni over such a long time. We wish her the very best for a happy retirement full of family time and travel. Mrs Buzzoni, you certainly are a real Mansfield star! Fun Run/Fun Raiser “Fear and Fantasy” was definitely the theme for our Fun Run/ Fun Raiser this year. I was absolutely amazed at the costumes that the students were wearing. They were colourful and imaginative! However most of all I loved how they were all having so much fun. My favourite costumes included: Snow White, ‘Fanta Sea’, Spaghetti Meatballs, Monsters under the bed, The Trump Wall. A big thank you goes to Mr Waugh for coordinating the Fun Run/Fun Raiser and also to all of our teachers for their team effort in ensuring that it was a great afternoon for our students. Once again, it was another event that showed our Mansfield Spirit. Well done! Literary Festival Every day the Mansfield State High School students amaze me. I am always so proud to see the way they participate in many activities and of course the Literary Festival was one such example. On the weekend I had the opportunity to read this year’s edition of ‘Mansfield 2016 Literary Week’. I was so inspired by the creative writing of short stories and poetry. I thank Mrs Vallis, the Coordinator of the Literary Festival for her efforts, and of course I congratulate her on the success of the festival. Thank you also to Ms Distor, Coordinator of the Writing Competition and Anthology Booklet, for her efforts along with the many teachers and students who also contributed to this year’s success. End Semester Exams I would like to wish all students the very best as they prepare for their end of semester assessment. Our Year 11 and 12 students begin their end semester exams on Monday 13 June. Make sure you prepare well and give it your very best – never give up. Remember we are here to support you! I look forward to seeing the results of your hard work!

Report Card to OP – Year 10, 11 and 12Parent and Student Information EveningYou and your student are invited to attend an informationevening to be held on Wednesday 8 June from 6.30– 8pm inthe school’s Hall.

The purpose of the evening is to answer questions and toexplain how the grades achieved on a report card lead to theOP awarded at the end of Year 12. It is also hoped that someof the myths will be dispelled and the facts revealed concerningthe calculation of OPs. We will also explain the OP predictionprocess we have undertaken in Years 11 and 12.

Another purpose of the evening is to better inform our students.Year 10 students should then be able to make wiser subjectselection choices later in the year. Year 11 and 12 studentswill be able to assess more prudently if they are in the correctcourse of study for them and whether to continue on thatpathway. Year 12 students will have a clearer idea of: howOPs are calculated; and how the OP is dependent upon thecombination of the individual student’s school results and QCSresults. The intention is that this information will give Year 12students especially, the impetus to continue working up untiltheir last piece of assessment in November.

Please indicate whether you will be able to attend by returningthe slip provided.

Practice QCS Test – all Year 12 OP and RankScore students

During the Exam Block time, Year 12 OP andrank score students will be sitting a full QCSPractice Test on Monday 20 June andTuesday 21 June. All sessions on both days will be held in theHall and are listed on the Block Exam schedule. Attendance iscompulsory for students sitting the QCS test in September androlls will be taken at all sessions. Eligible students who are notpresent will require a medical certificate.

This simulation test is extremely important in preparing studentsfor the QCS test in August and will also provide us with datashowing strengths and weaknesses of the current cohort, soshortfalls can be addressed in our preparation program. It istherefore vitally important that students are present andfocused to do their best.

All students must bring the correct equipment. It was verydisappointing at the last practice in March that a large numberof students was not properly prepared with equipment. Thisis important because failure to have the correct equipment inthe QCS test can result in students’ inability to answer certainquestions and this disadvantages the whole cohort. The QCSTest is a team effort and everyone is required to fulfil theirresponsibilities to each other by being properly prepared.

Students should have three clear plastic bags with equipmentfor each type of test i.e. one for Writing Task, one for Multiple

Choice and one for Short Response. An equipment list appearsin the students’ QCS Success workbook. We remind studentsthat, under the prescriptive rules of QCS, only equipment forthe particular test they are undertaking, is permitted in the QCSroom. Bringing in any other equipment can be deemed ascheating and results in disqualification.

QCS Preparation Workshops

Students are invited to attend three QCS PreparationWorkshops during Term 3. Two of these workshops will bepresented by Bill Gilmore who is one of the authors of theQCS Success workbook. Bill has taught in Queensland Schoolsand has been responsible for writing numerous items for pastQCS tests. He is highly knowledgeable and has a wealth ofexpert information to pass on to our students. The Writing Taskworkshop will be presented by Mr Redhead and Mrs Couperwho also have vast experience in preparing students for QCS.

The workshops will cover the following topics:

News from the Uniform ShopThis year we have introduced an optional Kit bag for thosestudents heavily involved in sport who need to bring extra gearto school.

The Sport bag (small) is a compulsory uniform item for allstudents. (Cost $12) This is also the alternative bag for

8

excursions if the school back pack is not deemed suitable byAdministration.

The Kit bag (large) is an optional uniform item. (Cost $40.) Thismight suit students who have training before and/or after schoolas well as PE during the day and require extra sports clothes orshoes. This bag is NOT an alternative to the school back packand is not to be used for school books.

These are the only 2 options that students are to use for theirsporting gear.

Chappy Drive 2016Chaplaincy…is it worthwhile? In the words of a Mansfieldteacher …

“Chaplaincy in schools always seemed like it was nice, butprobably a ‘service’ that could be provided elsewhere. Schoolsalready catered for student’s needs with caring teachers, friendly environments and professional councillors. Was aChaplain needed? The answer for me now is a definite yes. Aschool Principal I had many years ago always emphasised themain role of a school staff was to ‘ensure every student madeit through the year alive because if they don’t, every other thingwe did will be pointless’.

Mansfield has an amazing school culture, caring, understanding, warm and safe. For some students, school isthe nicest part of their day; for others, even those with caringhome lives, the challenges of maturing and day to day life canseem too great. Glen Petersen and before him Ben Cherrychanged my view of Chaplaincy as I saw how the role was an

essential part of the school culture. At Mansfield students indistress want to talk to the Chaplain and I believe this may havesaved lives. In my experience the role of Chaplain in schoolsmay be one of the most important.”

Each year parents and community members are given theopportunity to support the vital work performed by ourChaplain. Currently this position is financed by the FederalGovernment for two days per week and by our School and thewider community for three days per week. If you would like tosupport the Chaplaincy Service, please complete the followingform and return it with your donation to the Upper Office. Alldonations over $2 are tax deductible and they must be receivedby the school BEFORE Wednesday 22 June to ensure they areprocessed before the end of the financial year. Alternatively, you can donate directly to MSHS Chaplaincy through the SUQld website using the following link

Thank you for your support.
