From The Principal ……. Cont’d Unpacking the daily MYTERN Message: Working out your strongest PETS

When your children are on a red road it’s easy to say, find a PET that will help to make you feel better, but often they don’t know what PET to use. It’s important to discuss with your children the different PETS that they can access when their road feels really rough, especially when they are not at home. Here are some ideas to start a discussion. Add as many new ones as you can, as the more there are, the better! Pocket PETS: can be created for the younger children to have in their pocket so that they can access them at any time – a small toy; a laminated picture of their favourite toy/friend/dog/holiday; an inspirational photo; a special rock or crystal Invisible PETS: are the ones that you keep in your head. It could be a song, a memory, a joke – anything that is strong enough to make you feel better. Friendship PETS: could be a hug from your teddy bear or your favourite toy; a talk with a family member or friend; playing with your dog/pet Giving PETS: being able to make someone else feel better Exercise PETS: having a skipping rope or ball in your bag can be a good idea for those who need to move to feel better. Exercise PETS are often better done on your own. Leanne Bradney Principal

Have you worked out what

your strongest PETS are?

They’re worth identifying, so

you can easily draw on them

when you need to. You may

not be able to change the

circumstance, but PETS are the

best way to change the way

you feel.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

PREP Thank you to all the children who have brought in empty food boxes and cartons for our discovery session. We are still collecting these so please keep them coming!

Our current topic in Maths groups is Chance and Data. When discussing chance we use language such as possible, impossible, likely, unlikely, etc. to describe the outcome of a particular event.

We have collected data on the colour of teacher’s cars and our class pets using tallying. We then displayed this data in a simple bar graph. We found that the most popular colour car in the teacher’s car park is black!

During some Maths lessons we will be graphing colours that we receive in a bag of jellybeans. If your child cannot eat these please advise their teacher.

GRADE 1 We are looking forward to beginning a new round of Rotations tomorrow morning. The children will be looking at the science of Sound, making knitting Nancy’s and working on their getting along skills by participating in a ‘Play is the Way’ activity. Thank you to those of you who have brought in lunch wrap roles. Your continued support makes all the difference!

We have welcomed Miss Natalia Parada into the Grade 1 team, whilst Mel Johnson is off enjoying her travels!

In Maths we are approaching the end of our unit on Subtraction and will be revisiting the topic of place value, where we will be focussing particularly on ordering and comparing numbers up to 100 and beyond.

GRADE 2 In Maths this week, we started our new topic, ‘Measurement: Length’. The children have been using informal and formal tools to measure the length of a variety of objects. They are also investigating how to measure the distance around an object (perimeter). Children would benefit from using the language of measurement and length at home to consolidate their understanding of words such as length, perimeter, estimate, approximately, metre, centimetre, etc.

Our CAFÉ focus this week is ‘Comprehension: Compare two characters or texts’. When listening to your child read at home, ask them to identify similarities and differences between the characters or texts. This helps them make connections and gain a deeper understanding of the text.

Grade 2 … cont’d As part of our Inquiry topic this week, we focused on water and how different forces affect whether an object floats or sinks. Children experimented with a range of objects, discussing mass, gravity, push and pull. GRADE 3/4 The students have all been given a research project based on our First Contact topic. The research is to be conducted at home, however the project will be completed at school. We remind you that they will need to be dressed in character for the presentation of their project.

Next Thursday 3rd September will be our science incursion Jolly Bops. This is to help celebrate science week. The students are also enjoying our science rotations every Tuesday. The focus this term has been on solids and liquids.

Our CAFÉ focus this week is Comprehension - Using pictures, images and diagrams to support inference.

We would like to undertake an art project for our theme next term, however, we require your assistance. We would like families to collect any plastic bottle tops (any colour or size) and have the children bring them to school please. Congratulations to our AR certificate recipients: Hannah K, Callum B, Tom D, Manuela Q, Aithan N, Maggie Z, Logan D, Neve G, Daniel F, Tara D, Amie D, Sammy R, Hanna A-T, Candice P, Nathan W.S, Olivia H, Erika K, Neve J, Kate S and Jack C.

GRADE 5/6 Grade 5/6H & B classes have returned from Camp Coolamatong and we have farewelled Grade 5/6S, C & G classes for the week.

All Grade 5 children received their NAPLAN results earlier in the week.

Some Secondary Colleges have passed on information to the children to begin the transition process to Year 7 next year. Make sure you are aware of your child’s Secondary College transition process arrangements, as they differ from school to school.

For the next three weeks our Maths topic will be the Addition and Subtraction of Fractions. Access ‘Mangahigh’ to further consolidate your skills in this area at home.

The District Athletics is next Friday, 4th September, and the athletes have been training well in preparation for this event.

Congratulations to our Stars of the Week 20th August, 2015
