NEWSLETTER: WEEK 2, TERM 1 FROM THE PRINCIPAL MRS DONNA MUIR Dear Families, During the Pupil Free Days we had the privilege of listening to Michael Grose who is a well-known parenting expert. Michael worked with several of our schools for this inservice discussing the parent school partnership and how we can make it stronger for the benefit of our children. There is an insert attached to this week’s newsletter about Parent involvement and how this is the secret ingredient to children’s school success. I encourage you to read it and I hope it provides you with some insight to how we can both make St Saviour’s Primary the best it can be for our children. We all know that building relationships is only successful if all parties involved are working on the same page. As a school we promote an ‘open door policy’ and encourage parents to come and participate in the classrooms. This allows for stronger relationships and helps the children see that we are working together. It is important to also acknowledge what we need to do for the children in all of this and that is provide them with a caring and nurturing environment that ensures they grow up with confidence and resilience to conquer any quest in life. Another topic Michael also spoke to us about was resilience not only for ways for us to promote it to our children but for ourselves as adults so we become good role models for our children. Michael shares a lot of wisdom concerning resilience: Some kids are resilient by nature their temperament helps them to be mentally and psychologically tough. You know those kids. They get straight back up after a setback or disappointment. Rejection in the playground doesn’t faze them. Unfortunately, not every chil d has such natural resilience. The good news is that most of the research shows that resilience can be nurtured and developed, particularly when parents themselves are resilient. Resilient kids share four basic skill sets- independence, problem-solving, optimism and social connection. Please refer to his website for further information: http://www.parentingideas.com.au/Parents/resilience The school has also purchased the Resilience in a Box kit from Michael Grose where it provides parents, teachers and students support and ideas of ways to build resilience. Parents are welcome to come and have a look at the resources anytime. As part of building stronger partnerships and resilience within our children we try to provide support for our children in multiple ways. One way is through school counselling. This week we welcome Kerri Marshall to our team. Kerri is a psychologist who has 17 years of experience of working with children. We welcome Kerri as our School Counsellor and look forward to having her support within our community. Have a great week! Regards, Donna Muir Principal 14 Lawrence Street P.O. Dear Families, During the Pupil Free Days we had the privilege of listening to Michael Grose who is a well-known parenting expert. This allows for stronger relationships and helps the children see that we are working together. Another topic Michael also spoke to us about was resilience not only for ways for us to promote it to our children but for ourselves as adults so we become good role models for our children.

Michael shares a lot of wisdom concerning resilience: Some kids are resilient by nature – their temperament helps them to be mentally and psychologically tough. You know those kids. They get straight back up after a setback or disappointment. Rejection in the playground doesn’t faze them. Unfortunately, not every child has such natural resilience. The good news is that most of the research shows that resilience can be nurtured and developed, particularly when parents themselves are resilient. Parents are welcome to come and have a look at the resources anytime.

As part of building stronger partnerships and resilience within our children we try to provide support for our children in multiple ways. One way is through school counselling. APRE (ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION) - MRS JUDY SMITH

Sacramental Program: We began our Sacramental Program yesterday with the Parent Information Sessions. Parents were asked to sign up to a weekly Cluster Group which should have their first meeting this coming week. Over the next two weekends, we have an Enrolment Ritual for the children to be a part of at either the 6pm Saturday Mass or 9am Sunday Mass. These are not compulsory, however we do encourage you to participate if at all possible. If you have any questions, please contact me or Paula Wagner via the School Office. Whole School Mass: On Tuesday at 9:30am we gather at St Patrick’s Cathedral for our first whole school Mass. All students (P-7) will be participating and all parents are warmly invited to join us in this special Liturgy. Riley Oughtred: A fine example of one of our School Leaders demonstrating Service. “ With contributions from the school community, I was able to send over 500 items of clothing to the 40 students of the Ikirwa School in Tanzania. Throughout the holidays I raised over $1100 to help send these uniforms and a box of books. I raised the money by selling cokes, mini mars bars and chips at my Dad’s work. I also had generous donations from Inline Screening and Crushing, Phill Thiess Plumbing, Toxfree, my Nan and Pop and A Mart All Sports. After paying for the shipping I was left with $400 which I spent on sports equipment and stationery. All this should arrive in 7 weeks for the Principal to collect from the Port of Dar es Salaam.” Thank you to everyone who has helped me make this happen. I have enjoyed the experience knowing that other children will benefit and our clothes will not go to waste.” Well done to Riley (and his support team) for an outstanding effort. We are very proud of you Riley!

Farewell Bernie: Towards the end of the holidays we were saddened to hear that our friend Mr Bernie Moore had passed away after battling a serious illness. Bernie played a very significant role in researching the history of the school for our 150year celebrations. His contribution was immeasurable and we are indebted to him for his outstanding, methodical and accurate attention to detail. Thanks you Bernie!

This Sunday Mass: At 9am Mass this Sunday, our school choir will be leading the singing. Mrs Hughes has asked for students to gather at the organ by 8:45am for some “warm-ups”. Thank you to all students and parents who are able to attend. Mrs Wagner will be running the Children’s Liturgy at this Mass. All children 4-10 are welcome to attend. Thanks Mrs Wagner. Have a great weekend,

Judy Smith – APRE

TUCKSHOP MENU: Please find attached to today’s Newsletter the 2014 Tuckshop Menu. SKOOLBAG APP: This year we join the Skoolbag company in making communication to you more efficient and readily available to you quicker. Skoolbag is a company who provide an APP for your smart devices where the school and parents can communicate to each other. The APP is synchronised with our website and it provides you with the latest information about what is happening around the school. Push alerts are one of the main features of this APP where the office can send you a message about a bus being late or reminders about events the next day. Parents will be able to access Class Communication Notes, Newsletters and any other calendar events plus several other great features. Our aim is to ensure all families have downloaded the APP by the end of term 1. We will start to use it as a form of communication to the families who use this APP. In the meantime, we will continue to provide hard copies and send emails to ensure everyone in the community receive the latest information. An instruction sheet has been attached to this week’s newsletter on how to download the APP. This will be sent home in hard copy too. Newsletters and other information will be updated on the APP and it will be linked to the school website too. We look forward to making communication more efficient and convenient for you. VOLUNTEERING FOR 2014:

need fresh volunteers to take their places. Even a few hours in the morning after drop-off or a couple of hours

more than happy to put you on together. It’s also a great way to get to know new people too!

Become A Volunteer Host Family

Make Your Place Their Second Home World Education Program (WEP) is inviting Australian families to experience another culture within their own homes by becoming volunteer host families. Choose a student from Italy, Belgium, France, Switzerland, The Netherlands or South America and get a glimpse into the life of another culture without having to leave the comfort of your home! Our exchange students are just as excited about sharing their own culture and life experiences as they are about becoming a member of an Australian family.

Arriving in July: Pietro (17) from Italy is sporty, representing his region in tennis. He is a member of the scouts and plays the guitar and drums. Cecile (15) from France is a keen dancer, in both classical and jazz. She is also an excellent skier and enjoys the smaller, non-materialistic things in life.
