workshops for spring 2017

Workshops are in full swing with the first time four-day “Retreat,” April 28 – May 1 occurring with Luca Barcellona at The Claggett Retreat Center in Buckeystown in the historic countryside south of Frederick, Maryland. Conducting “A Journey through Gothic Letterforms,” Luca will show us how to work large and small on different papers, ultimately creating a definitive

artwork by May 1 when the participants from around the U.S. will journey home again. The camraderie of living and studying together at the charming Doll Cottage on the Claggett campus is one of the unique and dynamic experiences we are offering – all at a good price.

Also this spring, May 23 – May 24 brings a Missoula, Montana artist to give us new ideas of working letter images with pencil and graphite. Amity Parks is a prolific artist and calligrapher who is well known for her creative letterforms and backgrounds – fun for a

change using pencils, erasers, graphite sticks and powdered graphite – the first weekday workshop at Vienna, Virginia offered by the Guild.

Spaces are still available for both of these offerings. Go to the Workshops section of our website at www.calligraphersguild.org.

Study in the beautiful setting of Ghost Ranch, June 4 – 10, 2017 in Abiquiu, New Mexico. In this stunning environment that Georgia O’Keeffe fell in love with, spend a week with either Kristen Doty who will be teaching Watercolor and Calligraphy Technique Sampler Book or Calligraphic Abstractions with Sherri Lovler. Enjoy a very special learning experience. Find more information at www.ghostranch.org.

The 36th International Lettering Arts Conference will be held at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. Over four hundred artists, educators, historians, authors, students and hobbyists are expected to be in attendance.

Visit http://letterworks.org to view classes being taught by WCG members Sheila Waters, Julian Waters, Pat Blair, Barbara Close, Yves Leterme, Jacqueline Sullivan, Carol DuBosch, Annie Cicale, Randall Hasson and many more.

The Washington Calligraphers Guild would like to congratulate Ethan Cohen on being

chosen as the recipient of the 2017 Zapf Scholarship Award. Ethan has earmarked

the money to help with tuition for his final semester of the Type@Cooper Extended

Program at the Cooper Union. We wish Ethan all the best in his pursuit of

calligraphic excellence.

For two days we learned the basic elements of Persian calligraphy with Abe Farsh. Only a third of the class was familiar with the Arabic alphabet, but Mr. Farsh and his assistant Nahid Boustani made the class easy to approach for all. They both shared their experiences of tranquility when doing calligraphy, and hoped that we would come away from the class having a similar feeling.

At the end of the class, we learned to write parts of the alphabet as well as our own names. As a shared class project, Mr. Farsh calligraphed Washington Calligraphers Guild in Persian and we all signed our names

around it. The final piece was given to the WCG archives for safekeeping.

In MemoriamIt is with much sorrow that we share with you the sad news of the passing

of our friend Phyllis Ingram. You may not have been aware of her many

contributions to the Guild, but we were all the beneficiary of her tireless efforts in mailing of the

Bulletins, Scripsits and Membership Directories. She was also the coordinator of the Holiday

Envelope Exchange.

“She was an institution that characterized our Guild...years of dedicated generosity of spirit

for the organization and years of personal effort to improve and learn her own craft,

always spreading her own kind of enthusiasm.”

She will be greatly missed.

Can you help? The Washington Calligraphers Guild is still looking for volunteers to fill a variety of positions. Calligraphic skills are not required - just a willingness to lend a hand to keep our group functioning at its best. Membership and (with the passing of Phyllis) mailing are the primary needs, along with anyone who may be willing to work on fundraising and Calligrafest - an event that has been missed by all in our community.

If you are able to spare a little of your time, please contact Derrick Tabor at [email protected] or by cell at 301-706-1123.

vHope to see everyone at the Clagett Center on April 29

for an evening withLuca Barcellona.
