From the President What a Change!

We were at the club Friday – Sunday with the A/C on to get the humidity out of the camper. There were lots of members soaking up the sun and enjoying the wonderful end of September weather. Now, as I write this, I wonder if I will need to turn the furnace on this weekend. I don’t mind change, but 30 degrees in a day? WOW! Now that is an eye opener.

So, here we are, almost at the end of the season. A few hearty folks are still around, but most are gone. Still, cold - ok -cooler weather means it’s time for the kind of food that warms our hearts. I hope it warms up a bit and plenty of members show up for the chili cook-off, Monster Mash, Halloween party and dance on Saturday. Let’s have a great end-of-season party before water off.

Lot Available

I can’t believe the lot shuffles we have seen this summer. Now Lot 6 is available. This is the first week it is being posted here.

Club Clean Up

Don’t forget, next weekend, October 7th, is the club clean up day. We are going to move the wood pile by the mower shed to the shed behind the clubhouse. We will need a couple of pickups or trailers to move the wood. With a good size crew it will be done before we know it.

Let’s get an early start on this very busy day. We will need to get all the furniture off the cement at the Woody too. We should have new concrete poured in the spring, but the hope is the existing concrete will be broken out late this fall. I have also asked Karl, the property chair, for a list of what we need to do.

The volleyball nets need to be taken down and stored, the bathrooms by the pool checked to see if there is anything that needs to be emptied or put away. We should also put the petanque balls, horseshoes, etc. inside The Woody for the winter.

Board Meeting

As I have said before the October board meeting is also on the 7th at 10:00 a.m. in the clubhouse. We decide our budget for next year at this meeting. It will be a long meeting, but we have a lot to cover. Please be on time as I want to start promptly at 10:00.

Finally

Chris and I are leaving for a trip to California and our grandson’s birthday on October 9th, then we are on to our Arizona home for the winter. If you’re traveling to Arizona this winter give us a call. It would be great to see some of our Oakwood family.

See you at the chili feed.

Water Off

The water off date is October 15th. If you need help blowing out your camper there will be people around to help you, just ask.

Winter Fun

Even though water is off during winter months, members on occasion do make it up to the club. Let publications know at [email protected] if you are heading up and would like to let others know in hopes of an impromptu gathering at the club and an email can be sent out to members.

Lot Available

The Finance Committee is looking for 2 or 3 volunteers to read the electric meters on 10/15/2017. Please email [email protected] or contact Nancy P. (Ron) or Kelly B. (Jeff).

Trick or Treaters

At 7:00 p.m. there will be little ghosts and goblins about in the campground trick or treating. If you have some candy for these little creatures it can make your next morning a lot easier. I don’t know what tricks those little ones can come up with. Leave your porch light on to invite the youngsters to your place.

Tips for Winterizing Your Camper and Equipment It’s your responsibility to see that your camper is ready for winter. If you don’t take care of it correctly, your pipes will freeze and burst during the winter. That would really ruin your spring!

1. Read your camper manual to ensure you open all necessary petcocks to drain your system. There should be one for the hot water system and one for the cold water system. Leave both petcocks open.

2. Shut off the electricity to your electric water heater (unplug your camper from the power box on the post or switch off the water heater circuit breaker), and THEN drain the water from the heater. Be sure you fill the water heater in the spring BEFORE you turn on the electricity. If you fail to fill it first, you WILL burn out the heating element.

3. If your camper or park model has a toilet similar to the one in your home, borrow the club bilge pump and pump out the toilet bowl water into a bucket. Then pour a pint or so of antifreeze into the bowl to protect the trap. Be sure the tank on the back of the toilet is empty and pour a little antifreeze in it, too. If your camper has an RV slide valve type of toilet, you won’t need to pump it out or add antifreeze.

4. Be at the camp when the compressor is being used. Remove the back-flow preventer from your faucet on the post if you can unthread it. If it won’t come off, leave it. Disconnect the hose from the water supply faucet and open the faucet when you are instructed to do so while the compressor is running. Once all the water has been blown out of the line in your area, shut off the faucet and reconnect the hose.

5. Open the faucets inside your camper.

6. Open the supply faucet to allow the compressed air to blow through the hose into the camper’s water system. Any trapped water should blow out of the

open petcocks. Be sure to open all the faucets inside your camper including the shower head and RV toilet foot push valve (if applicable). Let the crew know when you are done—once they shut down the compressor, you won’t be able to blow out your system.

7. Remove the water hose and store it for the winter.

8. You’ll need some inexpensive RV antifreeze. Never, ever, use automotive antifreeze! The amount will depend on your camper. If you can drain and blow out your entire water system thoroughly, you should only need enough for all your drain traps—about 1⁄2 gallon.

9. If you are unsure about your water system, ask around—someone will advise or help you.

10. Remove any paper products or secure them in a mouse-proof container (like your microwave) for the winter.

11. Remove all food items and any liquids that might freeze.

12. If you have a lawnmower or other gasoline-powered item, drain the fuel tank and run the engine until it quits. Or add some STABIL or Seafoam fuel treatment to the gas and run the engine for a few minutes to distribute the additive throughout the fuel system. Follow the directions on the additive.

13. If you have an electric golf cart, be certain the batteries are completely charged. Disconnect the ground or power cable to ensure there is no possibility of the batteries draining down. If they stay charged they won’t freeze. If not, you’ll have an expensive problem in the spring!
