CURATOR’S NOTE: FROM THE GROUND UPAccording to the ancient Yogic texts, the human body has 7 main “Chakras”, or energy centers. The bottom three chakras are indicative of the “earth” body, dealing with the workings of matter. The next three chakras are indicative of the “sky” body, dealing with the workings of energy. They govern the intuitive, the imaginative, the aspirational. The Yogi endeavors to understand the workings of these energy patterns, and to ultimately unlock this alchemic transformation of matter into energy.

In much the same way, the artist too is concerned with transformation of matter to a dimension beyond its physicality. The processes adopted by him include the intellectual and the conceptual, but beyond that they often lead to a space where a connection is forged with the intuitive. During the processes of creativity the artist uses material, akin to the “earth body”, and invests it with meaning, thus imbuing the artwork with a “sky body”. The onlooker now interacts not just with the form of an artwork, but also engages with its essence. When an artist works with clay, he is working with the most basic material available to work with. From the ground up, he attempts to elevate the mundane to the sacred, matter to spirit.

Zorba the Buddha is a place that has been created to aid these processes of transformation. While one part of the focus here is on discovery – of becoming aware of the energies within, of finding ways to move these upwards - an equal focus is on the creative, celebratory expression of this energy. An ideal playground for an artist to search, to discover, to express, to play!

MEHMET TUZUM KIZILCAN BlueWhen I entered to Zorba the Buddha, it was night-time and I saw a blue light. From a previous visit to Delhi, a memory of architecture of the Tombs and transformation of the mass had stayed in my mind. These combined for the inspiration of my work.

SHIRLEY BHATNAGAR IntangibleThe serene work environment helped bring together what seemed to me two disjointed bodies of work that I have been exploring over the years. A figure of many parts looks at another half figure from which a plant is shooting up with slanted eyes, as some thoughts rise up and float above them…

VEER MUNSHI The Imprisoned SplendourUnder the circular thatched roof among the ten ceramists, I dabbled with the basic CLAY in a meditative place like ZORBA - the serenity, the environment that is energizing to embrace even a dry fallen leaf into aesthetic bliss. Plunged in mediation, dynamic to kundalini paved the way to collaborate with the fallen pieces of others, createdrecreated from the occurred accidents of nature and the KILN…

ARUNKUMAR H G Connecting ElementsAs we understand, all actions are based on time and space. ‘Connecting Elements’ is my response to my stay at Zorba the Buddha. The material, simple clay, helped me to give a shape to what was going through in my mind at that moment. The place offered me to think simple, feel simple, achieve the simple. I kept feeling the clay in my hand and looking around all the time to achieve simple earth like balls and simply tie them together at the end like rosary beads.
