I hope that you are all doing well and surviving this summer heat! Please remember to keep yourselves hydrated! I thought I would take this opportunity to clarify our procedures when we have an outbreak, such as the one we had in July. First of all, both Tammy and I are very committed to having our residents healthy. It is so hard to see our residents not enjoying our dining and activity program as they typically would. When we have an outbreak (2+) in one area of the community, we have learned that the faster you shut down common area gatherings; we get a better result in keeping the virus contained to a smaller group of residents and employees. Once we have identified we have a concern, we notify both the County Public Health Department and the Department of Social Services. Public Health then asks for stool samples and sends them out to the lab. We continue to monitor any resident and/or employee who has symptoms and we provide updates to County Public Health on a daily basis. After 48 hours of being symptom free, we ask the Health Department to send us a letter, stating that we can resume normal daily activities. The “behind the scenes” tasks during this outbreak include setting up menus that include items for those who may be ill and well. Purchasing high volumes of paper products to be used for meal delivery, organizing both the dining staff and PALS to prepare the food, condiments, etc. and set up a delivery system. We try to alternate floors for each meal service as a fair way of receiving meals. Our Neighborhood residents typically do not have much variation to their day as it’s important to keep our residents in this area out where we can observe them and of course, keep them engaged. The Enrichment Leaders as well as Jeff do an outstanding job in making up “activity packets” that can be delivered to apartments where residents are feeling secluded or just want something to do. The team meets daily to discuss any residents who may need assistance with getting fresh air or a walk around (continued on next page...)

Circle of Friends NewsTheodore Roosevelt once said, “Keep your eyes on the stars and your

feet on the ground.” We took that saying to heart with this month’stheme: Reach for the Stars. We enjoyed learning about and discussingnumerous stellar-related topics including asteroids and meteorites, astronomy vs. astrology and the Milky Way galaxy--to name just a few.Did you know that there is a virtually uncountable number of stars inspace? We thoroughly enjoyed delving deeper into the mysterious andincredibly fascinating world of stars! This month we enjoyed somedelicious cuisine on our weekly outings and even took a trip past theGriffith Observatory--how appropriate! Our Sunday Scenic Drivesremain a resident favorite, too, with each week bringing new, beautifulsights and adventure.

Neighborhood NewsThe jovial month of July was

overall a very interesting month. We started the month with afun-filled 4th of Julycelebration--complete withsinging patriotic songs andreminiscing on past IndependenceDay celebrations we had withfamily and friends over the years. The grilled food Chef Juanprepared for the 4th of JulyCookout was absolutelydelectable, too! There were manyother interesting topics that werecovered this month includingBastille Day, talking about the firstmoon walk and learning all abouteverybody’s favoriteconfection...chocolate! Did youknow that the smell of chocolateincreases theta brain waves--whichin turn triggers relaxation? So thenext time you’re stressed, have nofear! Simply take a big whiff ofchocolate!

Sunny and SafeSummer Fun

From DRCSTammy Cooper

The odds of developing skincancer rise as you age; nearly 40and 50 percent of Americans wholive to age 65 have a higherpossibility of having at least onetype of skin cancer. Skin cancermay be caused by manymutations accumulating over timeand the body’s immune system isresponsible for recognizing andkilling abnormal cells before theybecome cancerous. As you age, your immune system is less ableto fight infection and control cellgrowth. Many older adults thinkthat there’s no point in protectingthemselves since the damage hasbeen done, but it’s never too lateto help prevent further damageand lower your skin cancer risk. The Skin Cancer Foundation hasalways recommended using asunscreen with an SPF 15 orhigher as one important part of acomplete sun protection regimen.Sunscreen alone is not enough, however. Here’s a few ways tokeep yourself well protected whilehaving safe, sunny summer fun.

• Seek the shade, especiallybetween 10 AM and 4 PM.

• Avoid tanning and UVtanning beds.

• Cover up with clothing,including a broad-brimmedhat and UV-blockingsunglasses.

• Use a broad spectrum(UVA/UVB) sunscreen withan SPF of 15 or higher everyday. For extended outdooractivity, use a water-resistant,broad spectrum (UVA/UVB)sunscreen with an SPF of 30or higher.

• Apply 1 ounce (2tablespoons) of sunscreen toyour entire body 30 minutesbefore going outside.Reapply every two hours orimmediately after swimmingor excessive sweating.

• Examine your skinhead-to-toe every month.

• See your physician every yearfor a professional skin exam.
