From the Editor … Well, summer is now behind us,

this year leaving us with the wonderful legacy of a well filled Tinaroo Dam—the water quietly sneaking over the wall for the first time in years.

Many of the local trees have donned their richly coloured autumn coats and winter is beginning to make itself felt, with jackets, beanies and Ugg boots being dug out of the back of the cupboard and fireplaces prepared for the nippy nights ahead. What bliss! Why would you live anywhere else?

July of course brings the Show to town. It’s a great place to catch up with friends and to see at first hand the talents displayed by Tablelanders in the many different sections, including some of our very own Happy Snappers in the photography section.

Speaking of which, in March this year we were saddened to hear of the passing of one of U3AATs stalwarts. Helmut Brix, founding member of the Happy Snappers Photography Group passed away after a long illness.

Don’t forget to check out what’s on offer in the monthly calendar and keep your eyes on the website for updates. There is a huge variety on offer, something for everyone, from exercise to learning a new skill, watching a movie, or listening to a talk on environmental matters or travel experiences.

Out and About with the Happy Snappers Group

Page 2: From the Editor … Out and About with the Happy Snappers Group

At the Annual General Meeting held in April positions for the next twelve months were filled by volunteers willing to ensure the smooth running of our organisation. Thanks go to the retiring members who all contributed so much. Their efforts were very much appreciated.

The U3A State Conference is being held at Redcliffe this year. Bill Bray will capably represent us at this event. These conferences offer an insight into the way other U3A organisations run and are a very effective way of getting latest trends, making sure we are running as well as we can and exchanging ideas with other clubs.

The Program Committee has been working hard at

making sure we have many new talks, courses etc and as usual has come up with an interesting selection. They are always willing to hear from members so please contact them with your ideas or courses you may like to run.

The Happy Snappers were sad to hear that Helmut Brix, who was the initial presenter, passed away. His contribution to U3AAT was greatly appreciated and we pass on our condolences to his family.

Valé Helmut Brix Members of the Happy Snappers Photography

Group were saddened to hear of the passing of Helmut Brix in March this year after a long illness. Helmut was the founding coordinator of the Happy Snappers back in September 2011.

Well qualified to start up the group, Helmut was a former technician in the Leica factory in Germany and a one-time retailer of cameras and photographic equipment in Melbourne, before ‘seeing the light’ and moving to the Far North, settling in Yungaburra.

Helmut was remembered by one of his Melbourne colleagues, John Fleming, as ‘enjoying a fine reputation as both an expert technician and a true gentleman’.

Commencing in 2011, the Happy Snappers Photography Group held the first of its public exhibitions in September 2014, under the direction of Helmut. Further exhibitions have since been held on an annual basis.

The Group has grown from strength to strength —a true testament to Helmut’s inspiration and professionalism.

Fueled up for the ride ... Sister Mary was truly a religious

woman. Besides her duties as a nun, she was also very active in various hospitals, visiting sick patients and taking care of their needs.

So it was no surprise that one day when she ran out of petrol, the only available container in her vehicle was a bedpan. She happily walked two blocks to the nearest service station, filled up the bedpan with petrol and headed back to her car.

Luck would have it that as Sister Mary started tipping the petrol into the fuel tank, the traffic lights turned red and she had quite a large audience witnessing the spectacle.

As she finished pouring in the last drop of petrol, one fellow opened up his window and yelled ...

‘I swear, if that car starts, I’m becoming a religious man!’

A matter of priorities ...

I waited patiently while my husband played a round of golf on our 18th wedding anniversary, then he and I went out to dinner at a lovely restaurant.

We discussed many happy memories we’ve shared over the years. Then I said, ‘want to go for another 18?’

Leaving it all ... A man hears from his doctor that his end is near, so he heads over to a lawyer to write a Will.

The lawyer’s secretary shows him into the lawyer’s office, but three minutes later, the man walks out again in a huff.

‘Can I help you?’ asks the secretary, dashing after the obviously upset man.

‘Help me? That guy is crazy! I asked him to help me write a Will and he says to me: ‘Sure, let me just ask you a few questions and then leave it all to me’.

‘I’ve been told before how dishonest lawyers are, but this just takes the cake!’

In the early days, everyone owned horses and only the rich people owned cars. These days everyone

owns cars and only the rich own horses.

My, how the stables

have turned!

Layman’s logic ... An old man went to the

doctor, complaining of a terrible pain in his leg.

‘I’m afraid it’s just old age,’ said the doctor, ‘there’s nothing we can do about it.’

‘That can’t be,’ fumed the old man, ‘you don’t know what you are talking about!’

‘How can you possibly know I am wrong?’ countered the doctor.

‘Well it’s quite obvious,’ the old man replied. “My other leg’s fine and it’s the exact same age!’
