FROM THE PRINCIPAL Parents as first teachers

Thank you to all parents who have continued to support their children’s education by making sure they attend school on time every day in full school uniform, having had a enough sleep, a healthy breakfast and with a yummy lunch free of packaged food. These simple acts ensure your child has a great start to their learning day.

I also want to say a huge thank you to the Coolnwynpin SS P&C. The P&C executive dedicate countless hours each week to organising and supervising fundraising events. This week’s AGM saw the 2018 Executive re-elected for 2019 and I look forward to sharing another year with them.

It is timely that I advise all parents and carers that the P&C support the school in a range of ways, including some consultation on matters on which I have to make decisions. However, the P&C do not act as my adviser or make decisions on my behalf. There were a number of comments on Facebook lately, criticizing the P&C regarding decisions I had made and with an expectation that they should have influence over them. This is not the case.

As a parent or carer of a child at Coolnwynpin, you have the right to discuss decisions I make with me and I welcome that input. Parents regularly request a meeting with me about a range of issues that have impact on their child or the school in general. They are productive conversations and I welcome them.

In contrast, some parents use Facebook to criticize the P&C, staff and myself without knowing the facts and often do it in a vindictive and spiteful manner. These types of comments do not help. They are not productive and have no influence over my decisions. The people who write them are wasting their time. That behaviour does not serve any good purpose nor create change.

The school community of Coolnwynpin SS have a reputation as caring, supportive and welcoming. My staff and I enjoy very positive relationships with you where we are freely able to discuss any issues or concerns you may have, as well as, celebrate successes and our children’s achievements. This relationship impacts on your child. Please continue to build this positive relationship by not engaging in the negativity that is created through Facebook complaints.

Parent Teacher Meetings Next Monday evening 1 April, parents and careers who have made an online booking will attend a Parent/Teacher meeting. The meetings to be held in the School Hall will commence at 3:15pm and conclude at 7:30pm. We have changed these meetings to Term 1 and Term 3 in 2019, so that parents can be confident that any concerns that your child may be experiencing can be addressed in a timely manner. Parents will still receive a formal report card at the end of Semester 1 and 2. I would encourage parents who will be attending for the 15 min meeting, to seek information from your child’s teachers around the student’s strengths and any possible areas of concern. I believe that a Semester 1 or 2 report should have no surprises for parents as class teachers will have opportunities to convey student progress multiple times. NAPLAN Next Tuesday April 2 between 9:00am - 11:00am, Year 3 and 5 students will participate in a NAPLAN Online practice test. The test is designed to allow students the opportunity to practice in the platform in readiness for the official NAPLAN tests to be held nationwide in May. Parents/caregivers will have received a letter allowing them the opportunity to withdraw their student from this practice test if they so desired. On the day, the students will be interacting with either desktop or IPad machines during this 45 min practice test. Mother/Daughter Evening On Wednesday 26 March, a group of mothers and daughters from our school community took the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant evening. The School community event was organised by Chappy Jules primarily as a meet and greet. The significance of women in our community was highlighted and that special relationship between mothers and daughters was highlighted and celebrated. I am also reliably informed that the cakes were absolutely delicious. Parking Parents are reminded not to enter the staff car park on Telaska Court. There have been a number of cars spotted dropping students in this carpark, which is incredibly unsafe as waste trucks and other commercial vehicles use this park for deliveries and other services. Also a reminder for parents to use courtesy around the use of the carpark on Ney Road. Only parents with a disabled parking permit are allowed to park in the school grounds as they escort their child for class. My only motivation for these reminders is the safety of our children. Holidays As this will be the last newsletter before the holidays - I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy and Safe holiday. I look forward to your continued support during Term 2. Regards Paul

YR6 EXCURSION TO SPARK LAB Last week year 6 students travelled to the Brisbane Museum for an educational visit to the interactive spark lab exhibition. Early in the morning, before Mrs Brown had her coffee, we all gathered at Birkdale station. We piled onto the Cleveland train and bumped our way to South Brisbane station. Along the way Mr Palstra received a worrying message, the Museum had been evacuated!!

We arrived to find emergency services gathered around the Museum. We were worried we would have to go home and miss out on a fun trip. However the ingenious and energetic museum staff came to the rescue, inviting us to explore the Queensland Art Gallery while they made sure it was safe to head back into the Museum.

The kind and passionate gallery staff showed us some amazing indigenous Australian art. We were intrigued by a huge painting that was displayed lying on the floor. At first we thought it was just a pattern but as we sat and looked from a different perspective the painting came alive rippling like desert sand dunes. We also saw paintings by the famous Australian Albert Namatjira and also from his great grandson Vincent Namatjira as well as some fun interactive displays.

We then got the all clear that we could head back to the museum. Inside the spark lab we explored all the amazing exhibits. We took crazy pictures on the shadow wall, hauled ourselves into the air on pulley chairs, made mist move, built electrical circuits and everyone got very dizzy on the spinning chair. We also had some great presentations on chemistry at the science bar and we looked at cyclones and weather in our world on the giant interactive globe.

After an action packed morning it was time for lunch with the dinosaurs. Then we climbed up all the stairs to level 4 and the discovery centre. Here we got to get up close and hands on with some museum displays. We saw a huge variety of life like preserved animals, hundreds of colourful butterflies and strange insects, played guess who with animal skulls and all the while we were being watched by a pair of green scaly snakes. Unfortunately we had come to the end of our time at the museum although there was still plenty more to explore.

We gathered our belongings and headed back to the station. On the train ride home we felt a little sad our adventure was over, but we remembered all the fun things we did and all the new things we had learnt. We recommend that everyone go and check out the museum and particularly spark lab, it is an amazing experience and you have heaps of fun while learning.

3B REPORT 3B has had a brilliant start to the year. This term, we have been learning the art of persuasion in English. The students have created persuasive paragraphs using several devices including modal verbs, modal adverbs and evaluative adjectives, to convince each other that an iguana is the perfect pet. We have also looked at the importance of being a great friend. Our discussions have focused on the qualities that make a person a valued friend and how we can all work together to stop bullying. Our Science unit has been a fascinating adventure into the world of animal classification. We have become scientist, looking at the features of animals and discovering why animals are grouped together. 3B also won the first Koala Fair donation competition. We had an amazing day, dressed as our favourite characters. Thank you for the astounding effort that was made by the students and parents. Fiona Cox

3A REPORT 3A has had an amazing start to 2019! In English the students have been learning to comprehend and write persuasive paragraphs. The students had to persuade me that 3A should have a class pet using the OREO paragraph structure. They loved this writing task and tried hard to persuade me to get chickens, snakes, cats, dogs, a fish and the list goes on. After reading so many great persuasive paragraphs we now have a new addition to the classroom, a Siamese fighting fish, named Oreo Splash! We have our linked our new class pet into other learning areas in the classroom such as living and non-living things in Science and the students are taking full responsibility caring for Oreo Splash. In Maths we have been studying chance and probability. We used the popular Coles Stikeez fruit and vegetable figurines to determine the probability of choosing a particular Stikeez from a jar. We tallied up our results and created a graph showing the outcome of our investigation. Liza Hamilton

National Day of Action against Bullying- 15 March 2 019 ‘Let’s stand together and say No to Bullying’ was heard echoing from the school hall as 4B chanted their message loud and clear to the Coolnwynpin community. Together with 5A, the students proudly recited their poem to an audience keen to show support for such an important cause.

The speeches and video that followed explained what bullying was, the impact of bullying on the wellbeing of others and the role of the bystander. Orange was the colour of the day and the take away message was ’Bullying is Never Okay!’

3C REPORT The flavour of the day in 3C is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle AND Repurpose. As part of their Design Technology unit the children have been focussing on Repurpose – taking something that is no longer viable and repurpose it and give it a brand new life. The students of 3C collected old boxes and lids, destined for the rubbish and repurposed them into a drafts/checkers game.
