  • Sometimes, a coach hasno answers.

Longtime coach TimBergan, who spent 40 yearsin football, has always beenproud of his ability to helpthe players under his guid-ance - even after they grad-uated.

"One of the things that Iloved about athletics,"Bergan said, "is that youcould see the result whenyou had helped someone. You could see what you haddone for a young person."

But sometimes, a prob-lem is so huge, the coachhas no answers.

Bergan, like many highschool coaches has kept incontact with many of his for-mer players and he is nowasking for help for one ofthem.

Kirk Rowland, a 2007graduate of Ellicottville, isfacing a mountain of prob-lems.

"He was a big boy and heplayed four years of varsityfootball for me," Bergansaid. "He even started a littleas a freshman."

Ellicottville went to threeSection 6 Class D champi-onship games in Rowland'sfour seasons on the team.

"We played at Ralph Wilson Stadium three years on arow," Bergan said. "He was there with a bunch of good play-ers and we had some very good teams."

Rowland, who played C and DT for Bergan, graduatedfrom high school and entered the work force. He eventuallybecame a diesel truck mechanic.

"Kirk was my neighbor and lived right across the street,"Bergan said. "He worked for the trucking company and hisfiance works with Quarter Horses."

Even after graduating from high school, Rowland keptplaying football, hooking on with a semi-pro outfit in Oleancalled the Southern Tier Diesel.

In reality, there isn't any "pro" in semi-pro football."You're just playing for the love of the game," Rowland

said. "No one is allowed to get paid in our league. We have alot of college kids that play in our league as a tune-up for theirseason and to stay in shape. The NCAA wouldn't let themplay if anyone was getting paid."

In fact, most players paidquite a bit of money to play.

"You had to buy yourown equipment and jer-seys," Rowland said. "Wehad fund-raisers and every-one pitched in where theycould. But you could easilyspend $1,000 a season toplay."

Rowland, just 25 yearsold, engaged to be married, and early into his career asa truck mechanic, seemedto have a bright future. Hisfiance, Katie Campbell, ranher own business trainingQuarter Horses. Katie rent-ed a barn from the manwho owned the truckingcompany where Kirk wasemployed.

"That's how we met," hesaid. "I would go to workand she was there in thebarn with her horses."

This past season,Rowland played for theOlean-based Diesel team, despite experiencing pain inhis leg.

"I started having leg painlast April," Rowland said. "Ithought I pulled somethingplaying football. It felt justlike a pulled hamstring. Ihad no power and I couldn'tpush off the ball."

Despite the nagging injury, Rowland played every game. The injury never fully healed, and even got worse after theseason ended.

"It got to the point where I couldn't use my leg to push theclutch pedal down at work," he said. "I had to use my hand topush down on my knee to use the clutch. When that started,we decided to get it looked at."

Rowland had an MRI done on December 3rd, 2013. Thefollowing day, as he was getting out of a truck at work, his legsnapped.

"As soon as I got to the emergency room, we showed theMRI to the doctors," Rowland said. "They saw that there wasa mass around the bone where my leg had broken. The doc-tor sent us to Buffalo General to re-set my leg and then on toRoswell for a biopsy."

The results were not good. Rowland was told that he had Osteosarcoma... bone can-

cer. Bergan's former lineman underwent chemo and radiation

treatments but the news got worse."The cancer had already spread to my lungs," Rowland

    said. In March, doctors decided

to amputate Rowland's leg."It didn't really sink in until

a few weeks before they tookmy leg," Rowland said. "Whenthe doctor first told me I hadcancer I didn't really believehim."

Rowland talked to his oldhigh school coach before hisoperation.

"He came to me," Bergansaid, "and asked me, 'Whatdo I do, coach? I've neverbeen afraid before.' I've beenasked a lot of questions as acoach over the years. Thatwas the hardest one I haveever been asked. I didn't havean answer for him. What doyou tell someone who is goingto have his leg amputated?"

Less than a week afterhaving his leg amputated,Rowland was back home, working in the barn with Katie.

"That's kind of crazy,"Bergan said. "But he told mehe had to keep going. He's apretty dynamic kid."

Rowland admits that he didgo to the barn to help hisfiance, but says he didn't domuch work.

"I'm still on crutches so I can't carry anything for her," hesaid. "I fill the water buckets for her. I play kickball with thedog just to keep him occupied."

Unfortunately, this story gets even worse. As Rowland was getting ready to be discharged from the

hospital, he was told that he had no health insurance."I thought that was crazy," he said. "I had insurance

through my job."When he called his insurance company, Rowland discov-

ered that, while he was in the hospital, his employer had firedhim and cancelled his health insurance.

"After 5 years of flawless service," Rowland said. "I hadnever had a single issue with anyone at the place."

Incredibly, no one from his employer has called Rowlandsince the day he was diagnosed with cancer.

"They didn't even let me know that I had been fired,"Rowland said. "I called the guy that handles all the insurance.I thought there had been some sort of a mistake. I found outwhen I was being discharged from Roswell and we were try-ing to get a hospital bed for my home.

We called my shop to find out what happened and that'swhen they told me I had been removed from the payroll."

Even today, no one from his former employer has calledRowland to explain why he had been fired.

"After I called them,"Rowland said, "They faxedthe letter informing me that Iwas terminated to the hospi-tal."

Rowland did get his insur-ance re-instated through theCOBRA law, but he has topay for that insurance himself.

"I am doing everything Ican to pay the insurance," hesaid. "If I am a month late, they'll drop me. I have nomoney coming in and my jobprospects aren't exactly goodright now."

Rowland doesn't know howmuch money he actuallyowes.

"The insurance only covers80 percent of the costs of thetreatment," Rowland said. "Iprobably owe around $15,000now."

Bergan is speechlessabout the entire situation. Forthe first time in 40 years, hehas nothing to offer one of hisplayers in the way of advice.

"I really don't know what tosay about it," Bergan said."How could they do this tosomeone?"

Yet another questionBergan has no answer for.

In one last insult - and injury - the employer evicted Katieand her horse business from the barn she was renting.

"No reason was given for that," Rowland said. So, right at the very moment that the couple was under the

most stress, Katie had to find another barn to rent."I can't even wipe my own ass and he kicked my fiance out

of his barn," Rowland said. "She had to move her entire busi-ness."

Rowland is at a complete loss as to why all of this wasdone.

"I have no idea at all," he said. "I never had an issue withanyone there and I was a good employee. I guess he just did-n't want to be responsible for any kind of assistance to me atall."

Bergan knows a whole lot of assistance is needed. That'swhy he's reaching out to the state's football community.

"Kirk is a good kid and could use some help," Bergan said. For those wishing to donate to the Kirk Rowland Benefit,

please call Tim Bergan at (716) 244-1291. You can write tohim at 4245 West Cooper Hill Road, Great Valley, NY 14741.

  • Lynch, Hogan will lead Upstate and Downstate teamsThe NYSHSFCA has announced the head coaches for

the upcoming Upstate-Downstate Classic that will beplayed at 2:00 pm on June 14th at Ithaca College.

Tom Lynch, headcoach at North Rockland(Section 1) has beennamed the coach of theDownstate Team. DaveHogan of ChenangoForks (Section 4) willlead the Upstate team.

Lynch says that, whilehe wants to win thegame, it’s more impor-tant that there will onceagain be a high-profileevent for the best play-ers NYS has to offer.

“This game is a greatshowcase for the kids,”Lynch said. “The atmos-phere for the GovernorsBowl was incredible. Wedidn’t have the Upstate-Downstate game lastyear and it was disap-pointing. A game likethis is a fantastic show-case for our state.”

For 18 years, Lynchwas a teacher at JamesMonroe High School inNew York City butcoached at ClarkstownSouth. In 1999 he land-ed a job at NorthRockland and joined thefootball staff under JoeCasarella in 2001. Heeventually becameCasarella's DefensiveCoordinator. Lynch took the head job in 2011 whenCasarella retired from coaching to focus on his AthleticDirector’s duties.

North Rockland won the Section 1 championship inLynch’s first season. They lost in the East Regional 13-10in overtime to Shenendehowa.

In 2012 and 2013 North Rockland played for theSection 1 championship but lost both games.

Last fall, the Raiders made the Section 1 playoffs butlost in the first round and finished 5-4.

Lynch has experience coaching in big-time all-stargames as he served as an assistant on Al Paturzo’s stafffor the Governors Bowl Game against New Jersey.

“This is a little differ-ent,” Lynch said. “Wewere playing againstkids from another statebut now we have thebest kids in our stategoing against eachother.”

Lynch says that thetoughest part of coach-ing in an all-star gameis actually choosing theteam.

“We are in theprocess of choosing ourteam now,” he said.“We have to get filmfrom every kid and wehave to talk with a lot ofother coaches to getrecommendations.”

    Getting those recom-mendations can betime-consuming.

“We know the kidshere in Section 1,”Lynch said. “We don’tknow the kids in theCity and on LongIsland. We have tochoose from Catholicand Public School play-ers and we have to talkwith all the coaches. It’sa lot of work."

There is also a lot toinstall and very littletime to practice.

“Basically, we have these kids for 4 days,” he said.“Hopefully we can do something good with it.”

Hogan has coached at Chenango Forks for 20 seasonsnow. He was on staff as an assistant coach for 13 sea-sons before becoming the head coach in 2007.

Hogan led Chenango Forks to the NYS title in 2013and 2014. He was on staff under Kelsey Green for twomore NYS championships, in 2003 and 2004.

“Kelsey is actually on my staff now,” Hogan said. “He’s

a great football coach but he just felt it was time to stepaway from being the head guy.”

Both Green and Hogan were assistants under longtimecoach Dick Russ who won several Section 4 titles beforethere was a NYS tournament.

Hogan says that there are many reasons thatChenango Forks has been a longtime powerhouse in theSouthern Tier.

“First of all, the community supports the sport,” he said.“The community supports the high school team all theway down to the Youth program. The kids are all coach-able and work very hard. Football is important to themand they take it very seriously.”

Continuity in the coaching staff is also a key factor.“We have had the same coaching staff for 20 years

now,” Hogan said. “Our JV coaches are former playersand the modified coaches are too. So everyone knowswhat we are trying to do and what we want to accomplish. It makes a difference.”

Hogan says he is excited to get involved with a high-profile all-star game.

“It’s definitely a nice opportunity,” he said. “We’ve got10 coaches on staff for the game and it will be a newexperience for all of us. It will be challenging.”

Like Lynch at North Rockland, Hogan says the mostdifficult part of the game will be choosing the team.

“We’ll have our first tryout on May 17th,” he said. “We

are also watching some kids on Hudl and if the coachessent us some film. We’ve looked at who is getting all-stateawards and other stuff. This is very challenging becauseevery player that tries out for the team is a very goodplayer. I have watched a number of tapes and every kid isimpressive. It will be very tough to select the top 50 kids.”

Santini says that Lynch and Hogan were chosen, inpart, due to the winning records the programs have post-ed in recent years.

“In the past we have chosen the coaches from differentsections around the state,” he said, “and it was their timeto take over. Both of these guys come from good pro-grams and have been very successful. It was a good fitfor both teams.”

Both coaches will have to incorporate strategies whilekeeping in mind that all-star games have different rulesthan regular high school games.

“A lot of the strategy is governed by the rules for thegame,” Santini said. “No blitzing is allowed. On Extra-point kicks, there is no rushing the kicker. You can onlyrush four men on a punt. You must play a 4-3 defense.”

Hogan says that can be a lot to digest for both coachesand players.

“We will be able to run six practices over three days,”he said, “and then we have the game on Sunday. It canbe a lot to take in.”

The NYSHSFCA is taking a huge step forward as theorganization hosts the Upstate-Downstate FootballClassic after a two-year hiatus.

The Classic, sponsored by the NYSHSFCA and theU.S. Army, will be played at 2:00 pm on June 14th atIthaca College.

NYSHSFCAExecutive Director DonSantini admits he wasthrilled when he realizedthe game would beplayed again, althoughhe didn’t exactly jump forjoy.

“I can’t jump anymorebut we were all thrilledabout it,” Santini said.“We are all very happyto see it come together.”

The Upstate-Downstate Classic wasoriginally started afterthe Governors Bowl wasdiscontinued. While theGovernors Bowl wascompetitive and atten-dance increased eachyear, the relationshipwith New Jersey wascontentious and eventu-ally fell apart.

“The whole purposeof our organization is totry to get New York StateFootball to move up to ahigher level with some ofthe other states likePennsylvania, NewJersey and Ohio,”Santini said. “When wewere playing the Governors Bowl against New Jersey itwas a big deal for us. Other states around us havethese games. We want to improve our sport so morekids get scholarship offers. We want to let the rest ofthe country know that we play pretty good football too.”

While the Governors Bowl was successful (betweenfive and six thousand attended the game every year),the relationship between organizers from New Jerseyand New York were never smooth.

“There was some bad blood between the NewJersey people and some of our people,” Santini said. “Itmade things difficult.”

Money actually wasn’t the issue, according toSantini.

“In the beginning, we actually had more sponsor-ships than the NewJersey side,” Santinisaid. “At that time, wegot some money throughthe state. GovernorPataki made sure we gotfunded.”

The stock marketcrash in 2008 changedthat.

“Different peoplecame into office and hadto cut things here andthere,” Santini said. “Wefell into the ‘Pork Barrel’category and our fund-ing went away. Thatmade things more diffi-cult financially.”

The relationshipboiled over leading upthe last Governors Bowlin 2012.

“It was a big rivalryand, unfortunately, itwasn’t a very friendly sit-uation,” Santini said.“That’s a shamebecause the game itselfwas outstanding.”

Finally, New Jerseypulled out of all futuregames, ending theagreement. New York

State organizers tried to find a different opponent butwere unsuccessful.

“We tried to hook up with Massachusetts but thatnever happened,” Santini said. “We also contactedConnecticut but they decided to keep playing theirgame against Rhode Island. That’s when we decided todo an Upstate-Downstate game.”

Unfortunately, the financial requirements were daunting.

“At that time, we couldn’t put a lot of money into agame of this magnitude,” Santini said, “but we had amajor sponsor who took care of a lot of things for us.When that sponsor dropped out, we couldn’t continuethe game.”

For Santini, who has been involved with the NYSHS-FCA since its inception in 1992, admitting that theUpstate-Downstate game had to be cancelled was ahuge disappointment.

“It was very disappointing for everybody,” he said.“This was one of our big things that we were doing forour kids and we just couldn’t do it anymore. All thoseyears we had been growing the association and gettingbigger, doing more things and suddenly, we had to takea step back. It was a very sad situation.”

However, Santini said, the Board members of theNYSHSFCA never let go of the idea of hosting a big-time all-star game.

“We all wanted to get the game back,” he said, “but weneeded to get our own finances in order first. Then weneeded to find a sponsor to help us.”

Santini said the NYSHSFCA is on much firmerground than it was three years ago.

“We’ve all beenworking on this fortwo years,” he said.“We’ve got morememberships nowand the attendanceat our clinic thisyear was fantastic. Those two things, memberships andour clinic, is howwe pay for thingslike this game.”

Landing the U.S.Army as a sponsorwas the final pieceto returning to thefield.

“The NYSHSF-CA is now themajor sponsor butwe could not dothis without theU.S. Army,” Santinisaid. “They havebeen a tremendoushelp.”

As things began to fall into place, it became clearthat the NYSHSFCA would again host a state-wide all-star game.

“I was pretty confidant that it was going to beplayed,” Santini said, “but I didn't really get excited until

we actually signed everything.”Moving the game to a smaller venue like Ithaca

College, asopposed to theCarrier Dome atSyracuse, has alsobeen a positivechange. Santinisays that IthacaCollege coach MikeWelch has beenmore than welcom-ing to the NYSHSF-CA.

“Mike Welch isvery happy that weare going to bethere,” Santini said.“He’s been a bighelp to us.”

In conjunctionwith the game,NYSHSFCA willalso be running theSuper Combinethat morning. TheNYSHSFCA ishosting combinesat several locationsthroughout NYState in May.Players will be separated by positions (OL-DL; RB-WR;LB-DB and QB) and will compete in combine-like skills.

“Players with the top 250 scores will be invited to theSuper Combine in Ithaca,” Santini said.

The Super Combine will be held at 9am the morningof the game. Players at the Super Combine are alsoinvited to watch the Upstate-Downstate game.

Santini says that, despite all the excitement of get-ting the Classic back, there have been a few logisticalchallenges to overcome.

“We haven’t done this in two years,” Santini said.“Our last sponsor had provided a number of people tohelp with things like the registration in the weeks lead-ing up to the game. We are scrambling to get people totake up that load of work. All the Board Members haveput a ton of time and effort on this. We’re a little ner-vous because a lot of these administrative tasks arenew to us.”

So, while there is rampant excitement about thereturn of the Upstate-Downstate Classic, Santini doestemper his enthusiasm.

“I’m excited,” he said, “but I still want to wait to seehow successful we are this year.”

  • Since he was namedthe head coach atCanisius before the 2011season, Rich Robbins hasbuilt the program mostfearsome footballmachine in New YorkState.

Last fall, the Crusadersfinished 12-0 and won thefirst-ever NYS CatholicSchools Championshipwith a 23-16 overArchbishop Stepinac.Canisius was named the#1 Class AA team in NYSby the NYS SportswritersAssociation.

Frankly, anything lesswould have been a hugedisappointment toRobbins.

“We had high expecta-tions for last year’sgroup,” Robbins said. “Wehad some really talentedkids coming back. Ourgoal was to be undefeat-ed and win a state cham-pionship.”

Canisius also finishedthe season ranked 30th inthe nation by theUSAToday, an extraordi-nary ranking for a teamfrom New York State.

“We were one spotabove Hoover, Alabama,”Robbins said, “which is abig-time program downsouth. I was honored to be mentioned with those programs. There are some national powerhouse programs on that listand I was very humbled to be included in that.”

Robbins finished 4-7 in his first season but Canisius isnow 32-2 over the last three years. In both of those losses, the Crusaders did not surrender a TD. In 2013, Canisius fin-ished 9-2, losing to Aquinas 3-0 in hurricane-like conditions.Four weeks later the Crusaders also lost to Ohio-powerCardinal Mooney 9-7 when they allowed 3 field goals.

Canisius also has a 16-game winning streak and will bethe consensus favorite to win a second straight NYS CatholicSchools title this fall. Just recently, the team was recognizedby Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown in a ceremony at City Hall.

But, despite all the on-field success, the most gratifyingthing to Robbins is the fact that no less than 12 of his players

received some form ofscholarship to play col-lege football.

“We'll put 12 kids intoschool with financial aid,”he said, “and that's justunheard of in New YorkState.”

Canisius will have fiveplayers who will continuetheir playing careers atthe Division I level.

TJ Wheatley (TE, DE)has accepted a scholar-ship offer to play atMichigan. Michael Tarbutt(K) declared during the2014 season that he willplay at UConn. BradZaffram (LB) accepted ascholarship offer to playat UTEP. Josh Huffman(CB) was signed to playat the University ofMaine. Mike Kenefick(OL) was invited to playat the University atBuffalo where he will bea preferred walk-on as afreshman.

“I have no doubt thatMike will get a scholar-ship from them nextyear,” Robbins said.“With a new coachingstaff coming in they hadsome previous offers thatthey wanted to honor andI think once they geteverything sorted out,

Mike will be a scholarship player for them.”Additionally, Canisius CB Jack Seminara also received

football offers but chose to accept a scholarship from BostonUniversity to play lacrosse.

Several more Canisius players will continue their careersat the Division II level. The Crusaders 1,000-yard rusherMitch Thomas (RB) will play at Edinboro while AJ Satcher(DB) will play at Gannon.

Additionally, Jakob Loucks (Utica), Jerome Brundidge(John Carroll), James Thomas (John Carroll) will continuetheir careers at the Division III level. One last player, OLChris Gangarossa will attend Milford Academy Prep Schoolfor the 2015 season.

“Chris missed a lot of his senior year with a broken foot,”

Canisius coach Rich Robbins has led the Crusaders to a 32-2record over the past three seasons. Canisius was ranked 30thin the nation by the USAToday in 2014.

2015 Recruiting SeasonCanisius as five players moving on to play Division I football

  • 16

Robbins said. “I think if he puts in a season in at Milford, hewill move on to a Division I Scholarship program. He’s goodenough and big enough, he just missed too much time.”

With that many players moving on to all levels of collegefootball, Robbins may be the best coach in the state to askabout recruiting.

He says that, whileCanisius does have anadvantage in getting topWNY players to come tothe school, getting schol-arships for those kidsrequires much more thanjust getting them to comeplay for Canisius.

“We have talentedkids, no doubt,” Robbinssaid. “But our entirecoaching staff puts in alot of work to help thesekids find programs thatthey can fit into. As ahigh school coachingstaff, we have to workour tails off to get thosekids into college or it justdoesn't happen. Youhave to go on a lot of col-lege visits and you haveto promote your kids. It'sactually a lot of work todo it right.”

Getting scholarshipoffers for your players isa lot more complicatedthan it sounds.

“We have a guy onstaff that just makes surethe kids are compliantwith all the NCAA stuff,”Robbins said. “One of hisjobs is to guide our play-ers through the entireprocess.”

Special TeamsCoordinator Bryce Hopkins also handles the program'sresponsibilities to both the media and to the NCAA.

“Bryce makes sure the kids are registered for the NCAAClearinghouse,” Robbins said. “I have classes to teach sosometimes he handles the visits from the colleges coaches. He works with the Guidance Department at school to makesure the kids academics are in good standing and that theyhave all of their core credits. We need to make sure thatonce a kid gets a scholarship offer, he’s eligible to receive it.”

The process takes far longer than just one school year.“He facilitates everything for these kids from their fresh-

man year on,” Robbins said. “It can be a multi-year process, especially if a player is going to a big-time school.”

Many families have never even heard about the NCAAClearinghouse.

“Any student-athlete that wants to receive a scholarshipneeds to register with the Clearinghouse,” Robbins said.“That is basically your application to be eligible to receive ascholarship. A student will need a minimum SAT score and

someone has to coordi-nate with the CollegeCompliance people tomake sure all the I's aredotted and the T's arecrossed.”

After the athleticrequirements are takencare of, there is morepaperwork to be done.

“The player still needsto fill out an application tothe school, just as if youwere a regular student,”Robbins said. “It’s a verydaunting process for afamily to go through, especially if they haven’tgone through it before.”

Robbins says thatmany players who couldplay at a scholarship levelsimply don’t get theopportunity because noone is able to help themnavigate the NCAArequirements.

“The sad part is, somelower-income families orpeople that don't havecomputer savvy to gothrough everything willmiss out,” he said. “A sin-gle mom who is workingtwo shifts a day will nothave a clue how to navi-gate everything. Ourschool can provide helpfor families but some of

the schools don’t have the people available to help a familythrough this.”

Robbins says that the bigger the recruit, the bigger theheadaches that come with getting a scholarship.

“The higher the level of football, the more hoops andpaperwork there is to go through,” he said.

Robbins says it's not just Division I athletes who have towork at getting accepted. Even non-scholarship Division IIIplayers will have extra requirements in order to play.

“There is much less paperwork to be accepted to playDivision III football,” he said, “but it’s still a process. The fami-ly is still filling out financial aid applications and student loan

applications in addition to being recruited but compared tothe Division I process, it’s a little easier.”

Despite the fact that Robbins had a player get an offer toMichigan this year, he says high school coaches shouldmake it a priority to be familiarwith the Division III process.

“Division III football is REAL-LY good football,” he said.“None of these kids realize justhow good that level of footballis. Even some coaches don’tunderstand how good you haveto be to play D-3 football.”

Young coaches should startto build their network with theDivision III coaches as soon asthey start coaching.

“I’m going to see the coach-es from Hobart and St. JohnFisher a lot more than I seeNick Saban,” Robbins said,“and so is every other highschool coach. I want to makesure our D-3 kids are takencare of, too. You need to knowwho these guys are, especiallythe guys from your local area. You need to know how they runtheir programs and which kidswould fit well with those pro-grams.”

Finally, Robbins says thathigh school coaches simplymust promote their players.

“The best advice I could givewould be to get out there andwork your network,” he said.“Stay in contact with the collegecoaches, especially during theoff-season. Scholarships will notfall from the sky. You really needto go to clinics and camps whenyou can. Every college coachwill let you come to spring prac-tice so you can watch how theydo things and talk with you afterpractice. You need to make phone calls. I have a whole deskfull of business cards from college coaches. If you sit aroundand wait for it, it won’t happen.”

Above all, Robbins says, you must be honest about yourplayers.

“Your word means everything when you are talking aboutthese kids,” Robbins said. “Don’t oversell your players. If youover-value your kids, word will get around. It will wreck yourcredibility for years.”

Also, Robbins said, don’t shy away from talking aboutplayers from other teams.

“We will talk to college coaches about a kid at anotherschool,” he said. “College coaches will respect the fact that

you talk about great players on other teams. If a collegerecruiter hears about one of our kids from one of our rivals, that can carry a lot of weight. Advocate for all the kids thatyou think truly deserve a shot at playing in college. It will help

when it comes to talking aboutyour own players.”

Robbins also feels that theJunior College or Prep Schoolroute is a great avenue forsome players.

“We have a kid going toMilford Academy, a PrepSchool,” he said. “I felt MilfordAcademy was a great fit forhim. In his case, he had aninjury that kept him out for mostof his senior year. So he needsanother season of high-levelfootball to get some film outthere. For other kids, maybethey need another year or twoacademically and then they canhave a lot of success in col-lege.”

Robbins says that makingvideos for college coaches issimply part of a coach’s jobdescription. It’s a professionalresponsibility.

“College coaches reallydon't want to see highlightfilms,” he said. “Anyone canmake a highlight film. Usuallythey want three full-gamefilms.”

College coaches are lookingfor things that highlight filmswon’t show.

“These guys will do theirdue diligence,” he said. “Theywant to see what a kid doeswhen he is not part of the play. When the ball is on the otherside of the field, your body lan-guage, your interaction withteammates, if you’re cheering

for the defense when you”re on the sidelines. Do you go overto the bench and pout when you are taken out of the game? These schools have a lot at stake when they invest in one ofyour players so the kids need to know that they better havethe switch turned on at all times during the game.”

Off the field is just as important as on the field.“You have to perform on the field, in the classroom and be

smart with social media,” he said. “All the big colleges arepaying someone full time to just sit there and monitor theinternet usage of kids they are interested in. If a kid sendsout a Tweet about a party or puts up an offensive post onFacebook, they will know about it. That ‘hilarious’ post yousent out could cost you a scholarship opportunity.”
