From Fr. Michael HomeStreaming
As we imagine what Christ Church will look like in the future and consider how we can broaden the scope of our mission to be a positive force in the life of Red Wing in the 21st century and beyond, it is clear that new technologies will play an essential role. While the “bricks and mortar” aspect of our worship spaces are not likely to be dramatically altered, our use of new technologies, particularly in the field of electron‐ic communications, will help us to realize significant changes in how we “do” church. In short, they will help us to reach a wider community, which is all a part of our goal to be a missional church that seeks to engage with the community in a more intentional way.
At Christ Church we are no strangers to electronic communications: we are active in our use of social media (Facebook), we have had a Web‐site for many years that is regularly updated and improved, and email is now the standard means of communication to keep us in regular contact with each other. Even the Caller reaches most of us in an electronic form!
Very soon, Christ Church will also be streaming live Sunday services to those facing obstacles to attending services in person. Also, through this same technology I am excited to offer tele‐pastoral visits to homebound church members.
The live streaming of Sunday services and the tele‐pastoral visits are made possible through Christ Church’s participation in Red Wing HomeStream Community. Nine local organizations (including two churches, Christ Church and First Presbyterian,) are piloting a commu‐nity deployment of HomeStream, a web‐based platform to help people stay better connected with friends and family, organizations and com‐munity services for maintaining an active, healthy and engaged lifestyle.
HomeStream is a Minneapolis‐based software development company building Internet and computer‐based tools for families and persons who face obstacles staying connected to loved ones and communities. Red Wing Ignite, one of the programs sponsors, is actively promoting Internet utilization in our community, as part of a national U. S. Ignite initiative.
Our goal is to have the HomeStream streaming function in place by July 13 for Christmas in July. Randy Johnson has been working with HomeStream to install the cameras that will be used for the Sunday ser‐vices. Red Wing – can now be part of the Sunday community faith experience. As a test of the live streaming function, we’re hoping that several of our members at St. Brigid’s and Jordan Towers can participate in Christmas in July, even if they can’t join us in person! Once we reach this milestone, we can plan other uses for HomeStream.
Registration at HomeStream is available at no cost
to all Red Wing residents and anyone from anywhere in
the world who is associated with a Red Wing resident –
kids away at college, service personnel stationed anywhere
in the world, adult children living in another state. Mem‐
bers who are interested in either the Sunday services or
connecting privately with me for pastoral visits through
HomeStream should call the church for more information.
You’ll be provided with a username and password. Then
you’ll be included in groups that will be given access to
view services ‐ or you can schedule a tele‐pastoral visit just
like making any other appointment!
This program is just one step toward building a church
that is more actively engaged both internally within our
faith community and externally with the wider communi‐
ty that surrounds us!
Listening T0 the Community In late winter we introduced our faith community to the master plan for upcoming renovations. The community
submitted numerous comments that are greatly appreciated.
But the next step is the process of listening to the Red Wing community. We have had conversations with a num‐ber of individuals and groups. Much like our parish community, the response has been generally positive. One concern that has come up is, “Is there enough parking?”. That may not be an issue that we can address. We know that the ramp is less than half a block away, but we’ll have to do some educating on that.
Some of the comment and suggestions:
Programs for youth of all ages are important to the community, especially programs that reach middle school and older. But to build a successful program we need to listen to the kids and have them help us build it.
The idea of a meeting space for nonprofit organizations has support, especially if the space has up‐to‐date technology.
There is strong appreciation of the commitment to the architectural integrity of the building.
A key concept is building strong partnerships to make programs successful, suggestions include our neigh‐bors such as the Library, the Sheldon, the YMCA and the Churches around the park.
Can we re‐energize a Moms’ group and provide daycare.
There are more thoughts and ideas and we will gather more as we continue to our conversations in the commu‐nity. Our next step is another survey that will be going out to our community. Your input is critical. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers as we go forward with this process.

Branches July 2014 By The Rev. Barbara von Haaren
This morning as I was making my coffee, I looked out the kitchen window. The sun was up and the leaves on the trees were reflecting its light with startling shades of green, causing shadows to dance through the branches. On the railing of our (as yet unpainted deck) was a robin, posing beside a small planter of pink roses. He sat there, very still, almost like he knew I was watching. The colors and the light made the whole scene breathtaking.
I feel so blessed to be living in a world of such beauty. I know that beyond my backyard there are so many things that are not beautiful to see. So I remind myself that robins and roses are something important to hang on to, an image of God to take with me, as I
Christ Church's Angel Channel 11 News filmed a feature on Nada Peters a
couple of years ago, referring to her as Red Wing’s “Angel.” How true, but she is also Christ Church’s angel! Her joyous presence is a gift to our entire com‐munity, but she shares her other gifts with us as well.
Her unbelievable talent for cross stitching tapes‐tries can be seen in the framed Madonna and Child tapestry located on the back wall of the Chapel. This is a work that took 13 months to produce and is one of our church’s treasures.
Now you can add to our treasure trove her most recent work: a cross stitch modeled after an early Christian mosaic in the floor of The Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes in Tabgha, Israel. Nada approached Fr. Michael last year to say that she wanted to make a cross stitch for him and that he should think about what the subject would be.
Those familiar with Nada’s talents know that he could have picked practically any image he wanted and she would have been able to reproduce it in a tapestry. He chose this image of the miracle of fishes
and loaves from the Gospels. The work took Nada 6 months to complete, is comprised of 450,000 stitches and uses 62 different colors of thread.
An ecstatic Fr. Michael pronounced that “this is too beautiful for me to keep to myself – everyone should be able to admire it!” He plans to have it framed and displayed in the church. Nada is truly an angel who wields a magic needle!

Summer Safety By Mary Heckman, Parish Nurse
“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity
under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 NLT
After the long winter and rainy spring, everyone is anxious for summer and the activities that take us out‐doors. To be sure you enjoy all that summer has to offer, remember to be observant and practice safety measures.
Don’t miss out on the summer fun. Follow these tips when making your plans:
Camping – Be sure to plan for unexpected weather or storms, car‐ry plenty of water if hiking, take a map/compass to prevent getting lost, wear com‐fortable walking shoes, wear a hat and sunscreen for sun protection, use insect repellant for mosquitoes and ticks, and wear a whistle to use in case you get lost.
Swimming or Boating – Drowning can occur in less than two inches of water, so teach your children to swim, wear properly fitting flotation devices, keep children out of hot tubs (they get dangerously over‐heated), use the buddy system, dive only in areas marked for diving, watch for shallow depths in lakes, and supervise all activity.
Fireworks – Explosions of any kind are dangerous so handle with care, keep sparklers outside and at arm’s length (they can reach 1,800 degrees), have a bucket of water nearby in case of fire, don’t allow children to handle them before or after firing, and keep pets indoors as they get frightened and may get injured.
Bicycling – Head injuries are common so protect children with properly fitting helmets, replace ones that have hit a hard surface, wear bright clothing for visibility, tie loose pant legs to prevent tangling in the chain, teach the rules of the road, never wear head‐phones, and maintain the bike (inflate the tires, oil the chain, adjust the handlebars, replace worn out brakes, and adjust the seat).
Sun Exposure – Sun damage is cumulative (children gather 50% to 80% of their lifetime exposure before 18) and cause wrinkles, sunburns, cataracts, damage to the immune system, and skin cancer. Be extra careful with skin protection if you have very fair skin/hair, a family history of moles, a family history of skin cancer, or take medicine that causes increased sun sensitivity.

What is Christmas in July? Christ Church in Red Wing will celebrate its third an‐
nual Christmas in July on the 13th of the month. Odd,
you may think, and perhaps even creative , but what
exactly is this cele‐ bration all about?
Fr. Michael explains it this way: On Christmas in July
we offer our thanks to God for those who serve our
community, we give charitably to those in need, and
we celebrate our God in ways that are somewhat
different from what usually happens in December.
First: We say “Thank you.”
During Advent and Christmas some professions find
themselves especially busy ‐ post office employees,
ER staff, police, fire fighters, the military, nursing
home workers, etc.; but the hectic pace of the season
often means that these people are not adequately rec‐
ognized for their service to the community. Christ‐
mas in July is a time when we can make a special
effort to honor the hard work and dedication of these
people – even if it’s just to offer our thanks by deliver‐
ing homemade Christmas cookies to them at this unu‐
sual time of the year (unusual for Christmas cookies,
that is).
Second: We Give to others.
Christmas in July is also a time to be generous to the
needy in our community – especially individuals and
groups who may receive lots of attention at Christ‐
mastime but tend to be forgotten and neglected the
rest of the year. Christmas in July reminds us that
giving is something we are called to do the whole
year ‘round ‐ for there are always those around us
who need our help. We acknowledge this call to mis‐
sion by collecting items needed by those served by
Hope Coalition.
Third: We Celebrate.
We have seen that Christmas in July is an opportunity
for us to Thank and to Give but it is also a chance for
the community to gather togeth‐ er in joyous fellow‐
ship in the middle of summer. So, it is also a time for
us to Celebrate. Once more, we hear the Christmas
lessons and carols; and once more we celebrate our
Christmas joy as a thankful community.

For our Giving Tree Collection The Giving Tree is already set up in the Church so that people can bring in specified donations and place them under the tree. It will be a wonderful sign of hope to watch as the collection grows, demonstrating the power of our love for our neighbors in need. This year we will be collecting items for Hope Coalition. Christmas in July is a time to be generous to those people in our community who are most in need of our assistance and compassion; this occasion reminds us that giving is something we are called to do the whole year ‘round—for there are always those around us who need our help. Last year we concentrated on collecting necessities for infants and young children at the Haven for Hope. This year we are broadening our collection efforts for people in our community who are in need, regardless of age. Please bring in these items, new or gently used, to place around our “Giving Tree.” Gift will be accepted any time from now through Sunday, July 13.
We are collecting the following items:
Pots and pans, Twin sheet sets, Bath towels, Blankets (any size), Kitchen utensils, Pot holders, Dishes and
silverwareHand and dish towels, Hand and dish soap, Paper towels, etc.
Or why not put together a Household Baskets containing any of the following:
Bathroom towels, Personal hygiene items (shampoo, soap, deodorant, etc.), Laundry soap,
Cleaning products (all‐purpose cleanser, glass cleaner, etc.), Cleaning rags or washcloths, Paper towels, Broom
Children’s Needs list
Diapers, socks, underwear, Pre‐school crayons, coloring books, School supplies, Movie passes
And Cash or Check contributions will be gratefully accepted as well!
We Need Christmas Cookies! If you are able to bake cookies, please prepare at least 3 dozen Christmas cookies – your choice of decoration/shapes ‐ and deliver them to the church kitchen on Friday, July 11th (or Saturday before 9 AM).
Continued
Okay, so I’ve explained what it is, but you still might
wonder what theologi‐ cal justification there is for
Christmas in July. Well, first of all it reminds us that
the Incarnation came as a surprise, a gift from God
that wasn’t scheduled. We offer thanks to God for the
gracious and surprising gift to us of Jesus Christ ‐ a
gift that continues to surprise, inspire and enlighten!
Our usual Christmas celebrations are predictable and
thoroughly planned out according to our schedules;
but the Incarnation was unpredictable; and it came
according to God’s time, not ours. So, we celebrate
Christmas at this surprising time of year. This is an‐
other chance for us to focus on the remarkable phe‐
nomenon of Emmanuel, God among us, and to under‐
stand that this is something that compels us to be ever
thankful throughout the year.
