Introduction A quick introduction to Chiswick School profile and history Ave Pt. Score and FSM IT starting point – could not have
been much lower! Setting a clear vision to move from

The very start of the journey Honesty was essential, we were a mess! Quick fixes were hard to find Promise nothing that cannot be delivered Find out what teachers want to use IT for,
but be prepared for the fact that they might
not have answers! Communicate................. All the majority of staff knew at this time was that
the use of Educational Technology would eventually
play a central role in our progress

Importance of a whole school vision – Some key questions Just how important is it for all students to receive a digital education? Are there skills that can now be ‘assumed’ or is this dangerous? An absolute emphasis on Teaching & Learning – This alone will not
make a struggling teacher transform to good, but it can help a good one become outstanding
What sort of education do you want your students to gain at KS3 (whether 2 or 3 years)?
If literacy and numeracy are the responsibility of every teacher....should digital education be exactly the same?
If we agree with the above how will this be supported with relevant CPD?
Academic or vocational......BOTH!

School Corporate Strategic Plan
We will be at the cutting edge of the use of new technologies to enhance teaching & learning and will gain national recognition for its contribution to student outcomes. Our teachers will be some of the best trained nationally and will all confidently use appropriate technology as an intrinsic part of the learning experience in their lessons. By the end of the academic year 2015/2016 every student at Chiswick will own his or her own roaming device
A bold statement and one that needed to be soundly backed!

Chinese School system
System Led - 50% teaching time50% Lesson Preparation/Observation of peers/CPD/Technology training
OECD Table toppers
Numbers - More top graduates than we have students
Cultural - Parental engagement 30% of family income minimum given to education
English System
System emerging – High contact time, hard to share planning or practice
OECD slipping in core areas
Numbers – Record numbers of graduates unemployed, 18-24 over 1Million now without work
Culture – Varied levels of parental support
There is a mismatch between what we are teaching and what business & Industry needs
Achieving transformational change utilising modern technologies

“The number one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It
lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential.“

“Using mobile technologies in the delivery of the curriculum to equip pupils to use computational thinking
and creativity to understand and change the world”

Chiswick School www.chiswickschool.org
This brief begs two immediate questions……
What exactly do we mean by
computational thinking?
How important is creativity within our school curriculum?
Computational Thinking (CT) is a process that generalizes a solution to open ended and often complex
problems
Chiswick School www.chiswickschool.org
WHOLE SCHOOL IT VISION
(From the top)
A clear agreed definition of the place of digital technologies within the school.
ICT Department should feed into this but the two are different.
Pedagogical agreement as to how this will fit into enhanced teaching & learning across the school
ICT DEPT VISION Baseline assessment from intake
Agreement on core user skills and how to deliver these
Merge skill acquisition with enhanced creativity at KS3
No ‘spoon feeding’ students of all abilities to be stretched and challenged
Clear pathways to KS4/KS5 and beyond
SUPPORT / CPD
Training will almost always be required – SLT to recognise and support this
Time to plan essential
Staff within the Dept. encouraged to take ownership for specific skill sets
Be ambitious long-term but realistic short-term
BUSINESS / INDUSTRY /
HIGER ED LINKS
Context is all sometimes – find where the skills taught are found/needed in Industry/Business and make this explicit within teaching
Seek out expertise and bring it in to support lessons (or bring students to industry).
