Water heating is the second largest energy use in homes. It accounts for 17% of residential energy consumption and can
cost a house hold from $200 to $600 a year. Almost every American household has at least one water heater
and approximately 27 million of them are more than 10 years old.
Every year about 8% of the households replace their water heater, that’s between 7 and 8 million units plus between 1 and 2 million units are installed in new homes.
The residential market alone has over 100 million water heaters. Just over 53% of the homes are served by gas water heaters
with electric serving 40%. As of 2008 electric water heaters are representing over 51% of
shipments.
