Community CHOICE

The Community chose our long-time advocate Audrey Smith for the 2014 Spirit of Philanthropy at the Association of Fund Raising Professionals National Philanthropy Day. The Community’s acknowledgement of all Mrs. Smith’s lifetime accomplishments was another way to say how much our Community values those who help others. Friendship Industries couldn’t agree more!

Note: With heavy hearts, we learned of Mrs. Smith’s passing near press time. Friendship Industries is so pleased she received recognition when she was able to enjoy it.

Community CHOICE We are thankful the Community has chosen to support Friendship Industries since our founding. Friendship Industries realizes celebrating 50 Years is an achievement we reached because our community values providing employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Your donations to Friendship Industries via United Way are designated to support employment transpor-tation. Your support helps offset the cost of maintaining our four vans and our van drivers.

Your donations support on-the-job training and job coaching for persons with disabilities in our integrated work environments. People work and stay at work because of you. Thank you.

Why People Chose to Work Here in 2014-2015

Varied work opportunities. This year we saw an increase in commercial customer diversity. This diversity translates to opportunities for building different skill sets all under our roof. The cover picture illustrates one of those jobs. The equipment pictured above illustrate some other opportunities.

Job Advancement. Sixteen people advanced in their work skills and were promoted. Pathways for Advancement is a structured program for internal job advancement, formalized this year.

Transportation. County Rehabilitation participants ride Friendship Industries’ vans. This year, Friendship Industries purchased a new van with matching support from the Department of Rail and Public Transportation and from Rockingham County.

Employment CHOICE Why Morgan Chose to Work at

Friendship Industries: “I wouldn’t expect a lot from Morgan. She may not ever be able to read or write her own name.” her parents were told when Morgan was diagnosed with Mental Retardation and Cerebral Palsy. There were ample concerns regarding her ability to progress through a 12-year education. And, even if she successfully navigated through academics, her prospects for having a working career seemed even bleaker.

Miraculously, Morgan made it through the elementary Special Education years. Learning to read, write and (by 5th grade) even process simple Math equations. In Middle School, Morgan hit her stride when she received the Presidential Award for Academic Achievement. Her confidence soared!

High School was more challenging and more competitive. Things began to change. Morgan was different. She wasn’t as academically astute as her peers. She was bullied, ridiculed and humiliated. Her academic performance faltered. By the time she reached 11th grade, her parents found it necessary to provide her with special tutoring. But, she made it and received her High School Certificate of Completion.

Fortunately, Morgan was selected to participate in the Grad Class program offered to Special Needs Adults at Blue Ridge Community College. Here among students of the same caliber, Morgan’s studies focused on employment options relevant to her strengths and interests.

After BRCC, she could have gone anywhere. She chose Friendship Industries. Why? She felt a sense of belonging, comfort, and pride in being a part of something bigger. Here, she could use her new job skills and earn income. She could be in an integrated work environment and enjoy lunch and breaks with friends. Here, she hit her stride again. She discovered Friendship Industries was the best choice for all her needs and was the place that played to her strengths.

Your CHOICE

Almost 1,300 Volunteer Hours !

Your choice to support Friendship Industries through volunteering, interning, and donating makes us stronger. Your support translates into employment choice for persons with disabilities.

JMU’s Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity at work on our vans.

Pilot Club of Harrisonburg provides a picnic every year for employees. Aramark at JMU provides an annual Holiday Party to all our employees , too. Both these events are highlights for our employees and staff.

Interns from JMU, EMU and BC gave time, energy and ideas.

An example: JMU Engineering students completed their two-year capstone project this spring. They created an adaptive tool for product assembly and presented their design to faculty and peers.

Why You Selected Friendship Industries for Your 2014-2015 Donations :
