On Wednesday, 5th June, members and guests of the Ferryhill Village WI had a “brilliant night” with guest demonstrator, Beverley Wright from Wrights Stems in Spennymoor. “The flower arrangements were absolutely fabulous,” said Sylvia Bell, President. “And then Beverley instructed all members and guests on the art of making a buttonhole which they were allowed to take home. “May I take this opportunity in thanking Beverley for stepping in at late notice,”

added Sylvia. “The faith supper was fantastic and may I thank all our members for their contribution to the table.“Wednesday 3rd July is the date of our annual outing, when we will be visiting Redcar to see the new vertical pier. “Could all members and guests who are coming with us please note that the coach will be leaving Ferryhill Village at 10am on the day. We should have a great day out,” said Sylvia.

Well-known local drag queen, Tess Tickle, along with the Dragettes, is holding a charity night in memory of her late Grand-mother, Joan Boyes in order to raise money for the Dean and Chapter Mining Banners Trust Fund.“The night is being held in order to raise funds for a cause very dear to my heart,” says Tess. “As I was born and bred in the ‘Crag’, I am very proud of where and how my family lived

and worked in the area. “My late Grandma Joan lived most of her life in Ferryhill Station, and the pits and the work they offered formed a great part of her life, so really this night is as much for her as it is for the banner and band,” she says adding, “My grandmother loved to see our shows and costumes and she always compared us to Danny La Rue!”The fundraising night takes place at Ferryhill Working-

mens Club on Friday 28th June. Doors open at 7pm, with carriages at 11:30pm.Tickets are £6 and can be purchased from club, or by contacting Tess Tickle on Facebook or by telephon-ing Alison Boyes on 07595 359432.“Please come along and support us,” says Tess. “The night will be full of fun, laughter, feathers and sparkle, and there’ll be dancing too. There’s even a raffle. This will be an alternative show to what we have been performing lately with lots of old favourites in there too.”

Tess Tickle, who performs regularly to enthusiastic audiences, is putting on a show with all proceeds going to the Dean and Chapter Mining Banners Trust Fund.

The County Durham Furniture Help Scheme (CDFHS), a Chilton-based charity that helps people to buy low cost furniture and household items is expanding into an additional unit.CDFHS, which currently helps more than 2,000 families in the region every month has opened its fourth showroom. The charity takes collection of unwanted furniture, household goods, carpets, clothes, gardening items, scrap metals, waste electrical and electronic

equipment and restores and refurbishes them. The items are then made available to buy for a suitable donation. The economic downturn and changes to benefits has seen the service ex-periewnce an increase in the number of families looking for support.Chris Palmer, one of the founding members of the charity said, “We rely on the generosity of the residents and businesses of County Durham and neigh-bouring counties who have surplus or unwanted items

Furniture charity expandingto donate to us.“Our team of volunteers repair and refurbish items that need it, which are then available for a negotiated donation to families in need.“The reuse credits we receive from Durham County Council have enabled us to deliver our expansion plans and to be a very active part of the local community.”For more information about CDFHS or to volunteer with the charity contact CDFHS on 01388 721509 or visit www.cdfhs.co.uk.

A Ferryhill man who wounded a female guest at a party, causing her to require plastic surgery, will be sentenced at a later date. Kyle Liam Hepple admitted throwing a bottle into the backyard of a house in Ferryhill, just after midnight on Wednesday, March 27th.The bottle struck the

victim in the face, and she sustained a deep wound to her forehead and smaller cuts on the nose and chin. The prosecution accepted Hepple’s guilty plea to unlawful wounding after he denied intentionally hurting the woman, claiming his actions were reckless rather than malicious. In mitigation, Lawrence Petterson said, “This

Sentencing deferredwasn’t a tea party. Copious amounts of alcohol were consumed by all and drugs, particularly cannabis, by a number.“This wasn’t a party of ce-lebrities, but the names of the people there are very well known to me and the court.”Hepple was granted bail, with a condition not to com-municate with witnesses.

Dear Editor,

On behalf of Windlestone Methodist Chapel members, may we express our thanks and appreciation to all the people of Chilton and Ferryhill, and also farther afield, who supported us at our recent Flower Festival held Friday 26th, to 28th May. It was part of our celebrations in this centenary year of the building of our Chapel, back in 1913. To all who made individual donations via our members, also to all businesses and companies who gave us generous help, we say a very grateful, thank you. We had a great event and also made a profit, which will help us with running costs. This enabled us to go ahead, under the guiding influence of our Festival Co ordinator, Mrs Kathleen Edmenson, to stage a wonderful display of flowers, which portrayed great events from the last century.

To those who attended “Walked in Space,” and viewed the other superb displays, I feel sure you will join us in thanking the team of arrangers for their artistic flair and the quality of their labours. To all the other support team members, our grateful thanks. With the permission of the Head teacher, Mrs Pybus-Jones who kindly opened the festival, some of the children from Chilton Primary School choir attended the opening on Friday night and entertained us. A centenary mug was presented to each child. Another feature was paintings by all age groups of children from the school on display in the Hall over the festival period. Local Artist, Mr Derek Slater has presented an oil painting which will hang in the Chapel on permanent display. It captures many of the developments of the last centuary, but also the Christian faith with Jesus looking down from the cross. Why not take the opportunity to visit us any Sunday for evening service at 6pm, or our Tuesday fellowship at 2pm every week?

We have an unclaimed prize from the Friday night draw (a hamper of sweets), which was won by pink ticket, number 201. Also an unclaimed prize from the Weekend draw on Saturday 25th (a large professionally made cake) which was won by white ticket, number 86. To claim the prizes, telephone 01388 721749 A full list of prize winning numers is on display in Chilton post office.

Dear Editor,

Can anyone help me with research into an ancestor of mine called Robert Applegarth? He farmed at Farnless near Bishop Middleham (where there is a nature reserve now and a farm with bison) and was land agent to Col. Surtees of Mainsforth Hall.

Robert Applegarth was the owner of a famous hunter / steeplechaser called Carbineer. Carbineer was famous in the area during the 1870s and won more than 45 races, many of them as a veteran.

The old newspaper reports make clear how popular steeplechasing was with the public and what a grand old horse Carbineer was. We think he holds a national record for the most hunter chases won.

Does anyone know of a plaque naming Carbineer which apparently used to be behind the bar at Sedgefield Racecourse until refurbishment?

One of Robert’s sons, David, my great grandfather was at the Hare & Hounds, an inn and farm near West Cornforth and now sadly boarded up and for sale.

I will be very grateful for any information on the family or Carbineer.

Yours sincerelyR Jones (Replies in the first instance by email to: [email protected])

Dear Editor,

Can I congratulate the whole team of Enter CIC for their performance of the Wind Road Boys at Durham’s Gala Theatre, where they reached new heights of excellence.

Performing with stars from London’s West End, our young people amazed the whole audience, with standing ovations on both nights.

It’s only a matter of time before this production is recognised throughout the whole country.

Andrea and her team are doing a fantastic job for our young people of the area, and every support should be given.

Keep up the good work, we are lucky to have you in Ferryhill. Councillor Brian Avery.

Mainsforth Cricket Club experienced their busiest day in years when the inaugural Craig Dargue Memorial Shield competi-tion took place on Sunday, 16th June.Four teams that Craig had played cricket for competed to have their name on the shield in this, the first year of the com-petition. First to play on Sunday morning were teams from Evenwood and Shildon, with Evenwood coming out on top in a keenly contested match. The second game was between a Mainsforth XI and a team comprised of former junior players from the club. Although there were a few scares along the way, the Mainsforth XI progressed through to final with Evenwood. The crowd then saw Mainsforth defeat Evenwood with the club now having the honour of displaying the shield in the clubhouse for a

year. Former Sunderland and England footballer Eric Gates presented the Shield to captain for the day, John Sweeney. Club chairman Tony Johns, and Michael Peddelty from Evenwood then paid moving tributes to Craig, his life and his involve-ment with both clubs.During the course of the day collections and a raffle took place with the proceeds being forwarded to St. Cuthberts Hospice in Durham. The final amount raised was in excess of £1,300 and Craig’s family would like to express their sincere thanks to everyone for their help in raising this amount of money, which will go towards helping the Hospice in the work that they carry out.Next Saturday, 22nd June, sees Mainsforth return to league action with the first eleven at home to Horden, then on Sunday the second XI are at home to Easington.

Sunday League. So come along and don’t miss out on a good night.”Managers, Shane Snaith and Darren Hewittson expressed their thanks to Margaret Twidale, manager of the White Horse for all efforts put in to the football team.

Saints to hold presentation night

A large crowd turned up for the inaugural Craig Dargue Memorial Shield tournament at Mainsforth Cricket Club on Sunday 16th June, raising over £1,300.

Ferryhill Celtic held the football club’s presentation evening last Saturday night, 15th June, and it turned out to be a great success. The Player of the Season award went to Dan Mitton while Neil Bell won the Player’s Player of the Year.Top goal scorer went to Lucas Linheart and the Manager’s Player of the Year was awarded to Craig Winkworth. But the biggest cheer of the night went to an emotional Les Heaviside, who received an engraved tankard for

an incredible 45 years of service to the football club. The club are now looking forward to the new season and a fresh challenge in the Durham and District League. Manager, Lee Jewett said that the club is starting their pre-season training this coming Sunday, 23rd June and, although the club is looking very strong for next season, anyone wanting to give it a go will be welcome and should turn up at Mainsforth complex at 10am.
