The ShoreCelebrating 25 Years: 1987 – 2012

In 2012 Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore celebrates a milestone -- its 25th Anniversary. Founded in1987 by a small, dedicated group of individuals whowanted to provide a helping hand to the Seashore, Friends has become a vital partner to Cape Cod NationalSeashore in protecting park resources and providing forpublic enjoyment.

Across the National Park System, park friends groups have taken on a critical philanthropic role to helpclose the gap between federal funding and parks accomplishing their goals. FCCNS funds and provides volunteers for projects that would otherwise be delayed or not get done.

While we have more than 500 individual and family members, during this anniversary year we are reaching out to increase our membership and expand ourability to fund vital Seashore programs, provide more volunteers, and encourage stewardship. Our new logo (see below) and tagline – LOVE THE SEASHORE? JOIN THE FRIENDS! – say it all! We urge each memberto tell others about Friends and its good works and to askthem to join our organization.

In its first 25 years, Friends has had many significant accomplishments. In the late1990s we funded the stabilizationof the historic Pamet CranberryBog House in Truro. Through our

ongoing Adopt-A-Trail program we have maintained thePark’s busiest trails. Recently we completed a capital campaign that raised $120,000 to restore the interior of the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station in Province Lands to its1900 appearance. In 2011 we created the 50th AnniversaryChallenge Hunt and the electronic Memories Album.

Each year we sponsor the Tuesday Evenings at Salt Pond lectures, the Winter Film Festival, and severalsummer concerts. Our participation in projects such as theSeal Education Team and phenology monitoring helps protect park resources, as well as gather essential data thatinform park management decision-making.

Ross JohnstonAnniversaries are cause for celebration! On Wednesday August 22 we are planning a celebratoryparty and fundraiser. What better place to salute 25 yearsof service to and special partnership with Cape Cod National Seashore than on the terrace of Salt Pond Visitor Center overlooking Nauset Marsh? (See pp.3-4 for more details.) The gala and raffle will raise funds forone of our three newly adopted Seashore projects for 2012and beyond:

1. Support the Park’s Making Waves project to bring underserved youth from Hyannis and off-Capeurban areas to the Seashore for recreation, resource immersion, and career awareness.

2. Improvements to Penniman House grounds to restore its historic appearance and improve visitor safety, maintaining the Park’s historic buildings.

3. Install Province Lands Bicycle Trail waysideexhibits to promote visitor understanding of natural and cultural resources along the trail.

Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore sees the 25th Anniversary as an unprecedented chance to redouble our efforts to preserve protect, and enhance the fragile environment of our beloved National Seashore for all generations.

We hope many park visitors will dis-cover Friends through this new-fangled device!Logo / We introduced our new logo in May with the intention of giving Friends a more distinct identity and ofdrawing attention to our organization. From the 25th

Boat Wagon Arrives at Old HarborThe replica “McLellan Service Boat Wagon” arrived at OldHarbor Life-Saving Station in late May to great fanfare! It was specially commissioned by the Friends and built bythe North Carolina Maritime Museum, based on actualspecifications drawn up in the l890s. As the wagon was installed, the Race Point model surfboat was hoisted up byblock and tackle, and then the new wagon was rolled underit. The surf boat wagon was used to haul the rescue dory tothe water’s edge. Each wheel even has its own attachableski, in case of snow.

Be sure to check out the slide show on Friends revisedwebsite, www.fccns.org, documenting the great effort byPark staff and Old Harbor volunteers to bring the boatwagon over the sand and across the bridge to Old Harbor!

This is a major acquisition for the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station and the culmination of the Friendsnine-year project to refurbish the interior of the historic Station. The capital fundraising campaign, begun in early2010, is now complete – with $120,000 raised. Friends isvery proud of this accomplishment.

The surf boat wagon adds a new dimension to the experience of visiting Old Harbor – come see for yourselfthis summer!

Twenty-five years ago, in February 1987, Helen Aaron,Marjorie Burling, Ansel Chaplin, Burton Hallowell and DonaldHeines – the Incorporators – were joined by Bertrand Bennison,Elliott Carr, Joseph Moran, Jr., Karen Steuer, and Donald Zinnto form the first board of directors of Friends of the Cape CodNational Seashore (FCCNS). The creation of the Friendsorganization was supported by then superintendent Herb Olsen.

We look back with pride at all that Friends has accom-plished since then in its effort to provide a helping hand to theNational Seashore. Hundreds of dedicated members have servedon the board or as volunteers over the years. With more than500 individual and family members – and with membershipsteadily increasing – we look forward to new ways to “helppreserve Cape Cod’s most precious natural resource.”

Here are some of the highlights of the past 25 years:

1987 – 1991The earliest existing board minutes of March 11, 1989, make noteof Friends making donations toward a new paging system forSalt Pond Visitor Center (SPVC), to a study of the Herring River, and for a much needed replacement copy of the geology filmshown at the visitor center.

Friends went on to fund several additional projects, including beach mats so that wheelchair visitors could reach thebeach; Telephone Device for the Deaf (TDD) at SPVC; avolunteer recruiting brochure; and student volunteers to protectand monitor piping plovers.

Three special funds, which Friends helps to administer andcollect donations for to this day, were established:

WilliamA. Pettit Memorial Fund to acquire booksfor the reference library (and more recently to enhancethe archives and artifact collections at Cape CodNational Seashore.)

Arnold Ostwald Memorial Fund to improve facilitiesfor the blind and handicapped.

Joshua A. Nickerson Fund, established by theNickerson family, to support environmental research inthe Park through summer internships.

1992 – 1996Friends helped fund a variety of items at the Seashore: 14recycling receptacles; articles for the Penniman House, such ascontemporary dishes and a sea-going rocking chair; anobservation deck at Beech Forest; the official Seashore handbook,

with a narrative by Robert Finch; a study of historical structureswithin the Park; and interpretive devices for use of the visionimpaired.

Friends spearheaded the drive to save the historic PametBog House in Truro, which was in danger of collapse. A years-long fund raising effort and educational campaign by Friends wasbegun for this vital project. The Stabilization Project was com-pleted in 2000, with the help of a NPS grant.

1997 – 2001The Shore was upgraded from a mimeographed sheet to aprinted, 8-page newsletter with photographs and graphics. In1999, Friends introduced its logo, based on the Seashore logo andthe Friends website was developed.

Friends funded the hiring of a volunteercoordinator for the Seashore and a program forSeashore rangers to teach wildlife protection toOuter Cape school children.

Adopt-A-Trail program began, originallyon a trail off North Pamet Road; Friends begantrail maintenance on Pilgrim Springs Trail inTruro and along Nauset Marsh. Volunteers planted beach grass atHerring Cove and monitored beach debris for a study atNewcomb Hollow.

Julie Harris gave a reading at the Friends 2000 AnnualMeeting to a crowd of some 400 people. The Friends AnnualMeeting, held in January or February in the early years, wasmoved to July in 2000 and now precedes an outstanding programfor members and the public.

In summer 2000 Friends sponsored a series of “Old FashionBand Concerts” – the beginning of the Friends summerconcert series that continues to this day.

2002 – 2007Family Campfire and Sing-Alongs were started on Seashorebeaches the summer of 2002.

Friends supported the Seashore’s Marconi CentennialCelebration, a week of programs on the Outer Cape. Wefunded the rehabilitation of visitor facilities at the historicMarconi Station Site in Wellfleet, adding viewing platforms, removing fences, and replacing existing trails, as well as a

community awareness program. More than 500 visitors bravedthe cold to visit the site the week of January 14, 2003, includingspecial guest Princess Elettra Marconi, Marconi’s daughter.

Old Harbor Life-Saving Station: Friends pledged toprovide financial support to complete the research and to acquirefurnishings for this historic maritime building at Race PointBeach. A committee was formed in 2003 by Friends to managethis all-consuming nine-year project.

Each year Friends volunteers participated in Earth Day andNational Public Lands Day projects. They also worked toremove invasive species at the Seashore.

Beginning in fall 2003 with the Symposium Series, Wind,Waves, the Past and Future: Natural and Human Forces ShapingCape Cod, Friends has sponsored fall and winter science-orientededucational seminars presented by the Park.

2008 – 2012TheAdopt-A-Trail program expanded to include twelve heavily-used Park trails, keeping them trimmed and cleared throughoutthe year. A hardy crew of fall/winter volunteers assists the Parkmaintenance and fire service staff with weekly cutting and burn-ing of brush. Thanks to our volunteers’ efforts, many a Seashoretrail and scenic vista is kept open.

Friends began sponsorship of the Seashore’s TuesdayEvening Lecture Series at Salt Pond Visitor Center each sum-mer, as well as the Annual Winter Film Festival.

TheOld Harbor Capital Fundraising Campaignwas for-mally launched in early 2010, resurrecting the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station Furnishing Project. A total of $120,000 was raisedto refurbish the interior of the Station, by purchasing items, com-missioning the building of period pieces, and many donations inkind to acquire authentic 1900-era objects. Hats off to the hard-working committee and to all the donors who contributed to thismomentous accomplishment! In September 2011 a re-dedicationcelebration was attended by more than 200 people. The campaignis now complete.

Friends contributed $3,000 toward the formation of Friendsof the Herring River, giving advice and guidance to an organi-zation formed to support the Herring River Restoration Projectin Wellfleet. We also provided a $3,000 grant to Audubon Well-fleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary to complete an ongoing horseshoecrab monitoring project.

The inaugural issue of Friends of the Cape Cod NationalSeashore Magazine was published in June 2010. More than40,000 copies of the 52-page full color Magazine weredistributed to Seashore visitors in 2010 and 2011. The 2012edition is 60 pages, with nearly 100 advertisers. An excellent wayto spread the word about Friends and increase our membership! The first issue of eNews was released in May 2010 and ourFacebook page was established in January 2012.

Friends lent support to the CCNS 50th AnniversaryCelebration in 2011 with the 50th Anniversary Challengetreasure hunt, sponsorship of the electronic Memories Album, and the “50 Years of Science” forum, among other events.

FCCNS volunteers continue to participate in manyprojects, including the Ballston Beach Dune Restorationproject, the Seal Education Training (SET) program thateducates summer visitors about the grey seals hauled out atHigh Head, and the 30-year Seashore Phenology study, makingdaily records of the timing of natural events.

Friends was selected by theNational Park Foundation toparticipate in the 2011-2012 ParksPartner Project to help Friendsbecome a more effective partner of theSeashore. Only one Friends group was

selected from each of the seven park regions. Some resultingprojects were the development of a new logo to emphasize ourseparate identity and our first annual fundraiser in 2012.
