Spring 2017 Friends of the Arts CELEBRATING THE ARTS AT DCDS Our school has seen all programs within the arts curriculum flourish over the years, and this year is no exception. The continued dedication of our top-notch art faculty and last year's additions of the Digital Media Space and the Eisenberg Theater have helped sustain the growth and excellence that is expected from a DCDS education. Several new heights were reached this year. The regional Scholastic Art & Writing Award recipients were at a record high of 109. Included in these awards were one Best of Show, eight Gold Key portfolios, more than 50 percent of the bestowed film awards, and the most awards received at the middle school level. The Filmmaking Program has continued to expand. What first started as a club, is now a fully developed program of more than 10 class sections ranging from introductory level to college-level coursework. The Upper School Concert Choir was honored to perform at the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids, and the Middle School Choral-Aires performed beautifully in the high school level of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association Solo & Ensemble Festival. Our Upper School orchestra and band students enjoyed success, with 37 performances qualifying for state competition at the district Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association Solo and Ensemble Festival. One small ensemble and three outstanding soloists were nominated for the all-state Michigan Youth Art Festival (MYAF); two students were invited to join the MYAF Honors Orchestra and Band. Being part of this exciting trend as a parent and president of Friends of the Arts (FOA) has been a joy and honor. Fulfilling the FOA mission to support and promote the fine, performing, and communication arts at DCDS is made possible by our members. Your continuing generosity enables us to look to the future and determine how best to support the tremendous artistic potential of our students. I am thankful for all our memberssupport and their trust in the FOA board to continue promoting the arts at DCDS.
