The global aerospace community’s most prestigious and long-standing awards honouring achievement, innovation and excellence.

The Royal Aeronautical Society has been honouring outstanding achievers in the global aerospace industry since 1909, when Wilbur and Orville Wright came to London to receive the Society’s first Gold Medal. Over the years, honouring aerospace achievers in this way has become an annual tradition. The Society’s Awards Programme recognises and celebrates individuals and teams who have made an exceptional contribution to aerospace, whether it is for an outstanding contribution or achievement, a major technical innovation, exceptional leadership, long and valued service, or for work that will further advance aerospace.

Honorary Fellowship

The world’s highest distinction for aerospace achievement awarded only for the most outstanding contributions to the aerospace profession.

PROFESSOR SIR MARTIN SWEETINGGROUP EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN, SURREY SATELLITE TECHNOLOGY LTD AND CHAIRMAN, SURREY SPACE CENTRE

Sir Martin is admitted to Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his leadership and exceptional contribution in pioneering the use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) technology in space (in particular the use of small, low-cost satellites for practical applications), as well as new forms of international collaboration in space that recognise the inherently global nature of satellites.

Sir Martin is the Executive Chairman of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and received the prestigious von Karman Wings Award from CalTech/NASA-JPL. He is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Surrey, a member of the UK Space Agency Leadership Council and in 2014 was identified by The Sunday Times as one of the UK’s 20 most influential engineers.

M JEAN-JACQUES DORDAINDIRECTOR GENERAL, EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY (2003-2015)

M Dordain is admitted to Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his exemplary leadership of Europe’s space activities as Director General of the European Space Agency and, throughout his tenure, for demonstrating a unique mix of exceptional technical, managerial, political, diplomatic and commercial skills that elevates him above his contemporaries.

M Dordain was the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Director General between July 2003 and June 2015, being reappointed twice to the position by the ESA Council. After 15 years of research and management at ONERA, he joined ESA in 1986 holding several positions including Head of the Space Station Utilisation Department, Director of Strategy & Technical Assessment and Director of Launchers. Throughout his career M Dordain has taught in several engineering schools and universities in France, Italy, Belgium and Austria.

Honorary Fellowship


PROFESSOR RAMESH K AGARWALWILLIAM PALM PROFESSOR OF ENGINEERING, WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST LOUIS

Professor Agarwal is admitted to Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding leadership in aerospace education and research and for advancing the improvement and development of a wide range of flying aerospace vehicles through ingenious application of computational fluid dynamics.

Professor Agarwal is currently the William Palm Professor of Engineering and Director of the Aerospace Research and Education Center at Washington University in St Louis, USA. From 1994 to 2001, he was the Bloomfield Distinguished Professor and Executive Director of the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University in Kansas. From 1978 to 1994, he was the Program Director and McDonnell Douglas Fellow at McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories in St Louis. He received his PhD in Aeronautical Sciences from Stanford University and is the author and co-author of over 500 journals.

The Society’s highest distinction for those whose professional achievements are not exclusively in aerospace but who have nevertheless made a substantial contribution to the aerospace profession.

AIR COMMODORE CHARLES CLARKEPRESIDENT, MIDDLESEX WING AIR TRAINING CORPS

Air Commodore Clarke is admitted to Honorary Companionship in recognition of his leadership and achievement throughout a long and distinguished career and life featuring passion, energy and application which has proved to be an inspiration to so many. He continues to remain active and has become an ambassador through the media for the Royal Air Force and young people as well as making a significant contribution to memorial activities across Europe.

Air Commodore Clarke joined the RAF in 1941, at the age of 17, and took part in air operations flying in Lancasters in Bomber Command. Shot down over Germany at the beginning of 1944, he became a prisoner of war and experienced the ‘Long March’. After the Second World War, his many appointments included tours in the Ministry of Aircraft Production, the Ministry of Defence, commanding a large RAF Station and overseas in Palestine, Cyprus, Malta and Aden.

Air Commodore Clarke retired from the RAF in 1978 and held a number of business appointments until 1995. He is President and Chairman of the RAF ex-Prisoners of War Association, Chairman of the Bomber Command Association, Vice President of the Caterpillar Club and President of the Middlesex Wing of the Air Training Corps.

SIR ROGER BONEPRESIDENT, BOEING UK (2005-2014)

Sir Roger is admitted to Honorary Companionship in recognition of his leadership and exceptional contribution to the UK aerospace and defence community. Of particular note is his commitment to championing, and his personal involvement in, the Schools Build-a-Plane Challenge, which has inspired and educated children across the country.

Sir Roger Bone was President of Boeing UK from 2005 to 2014. He was also one of the Prime Minister’s honorary ambassadors for British business (aerospace) from 2008 to 2015. He is now President of the Air League, a trustee at the Royal United Services Institute and a director and trustee of the National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB). In an earlier life he was a member of HM Diplomatic Service and was Ambassador to Brazil (1999 to 2004) and to Sweden (1995 to 1999). Before that he served in Moscow, Brussels and Washington and was a private secretary to the Foreign Secretary (1982 to 1984) and a visiting fellow in international relations at Harvard (1984-5).



MR DAVID BENTAVIATION ARTIST

Mr Bent is admitted to Honorary Companionship in recognition of his exceptional contribution in transforming aviation art with iconic paintings, bringing aviation, technology and art together to a completely new audience while, at the same time, promoting aerospace far and wide. He has tirelessly used his art to promote the benefits of aerospace to wider society including encouraging young people into the aerospace community. His support for aviation charities also merits recognition.

Mr Bent has a family background in aerospace but chose art as a professional career, working for much of his early career as an art teacher while developing his own artwork and distinctive style. He was reintroduced to aerospace about ten years ago through the Red Arrows and through the Royal International Air Tattoo. He was first invited to collaborate as Artist in Residence with the Red Arrows in 2007. This remains a positive and enduring goodwill relationship and David is the artist most closely associated with the team.

RAeS Team Gold Medal

Awarded for work of an outstanding nature in aerospace.

ROSETTA MISSION TEAMEUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY

This award is in recognition of the Team’s ground-breaking success performing the world’s first ever delivery of a space probe into orbit around a comet and, greater still, successfully delivering an unmanned lander onto the surface of the comet itself with the first attempt. The Rosetta Mission has brought about a wealth of new science, greatly extending our knowledge of the building blocks of the solar system.

PROFESSOR RICHARD J PARKERDIRECTOR, RESEARCH & TECHNOLOGY, ROLLS-ROYCE GROUP

Professor Parker is being awarded the Society Gold Medal in recognition of his outstanding achievement and contribution as an acknowledged and widely recognised world-class aerospace scientist and engineer whose leadership and inspiration has shaped aerospace innovation, research and technology advances and programmes within and across company, national and international boundaries.

Professor Parker was appointed Director of Research & Technology, Rolls-Royce Group in January 2001. He joined Rolls-Royce as a Chief Research Scientist in 1978. He is Chairman of the Board of the Clean Sky 2 European research programme. Professor Parker was voted European Chief Technology Officer of the Year in 2014. He was awarded a CBE in 2013 for services to engineering.

The Rosetta Team is composed of people in various areas: European Space Agency (ESA) and Industry spacecraft designers, integrators and testers; scientists who designed and operated the spacecraft’s instruments; ESA science operations, mission operations and flight dynamics teams; Philae designers and operators. These teams evolved over almost 30 years, from the initial conception of the mission in the eighties, through launch in 2004, to arrival at the comet in 2014. A large, unique group of specialists that came together across space (mainly Europe but also USA and other countries) and time (three decades) to achieve the outstanding success of this historical mission.

RAeS Silver Medal

Awarded for work contributing to major advances or contributions in aerospace.

DR G SATHEESH REDDYSCIENTIFIC ADVISOR TO DEFENCE MINISTER & DISTINGUISHED SCIENTIST, DEFENCE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION (DRDO), INDIA

Dr Reddy is being awarded the Society Silver Medal in recognition of his contributions as one of the leading navigation and avionics experts in India, under whose leadership India has developed state-of-the-art avionics sensors and systems for key national strategic programmes and other defence applications. His pioneering contributions in promoting aerospace and aeronautics in India are also acknowledged.

Dr Reddy is presently one of the youngest Distinguished Scientists in India and Director Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) a premier laboratory responsible for the entire design and development of advanced avionic systems for several defence applications in India. He chairs the Hyderabad Branch of the Aeronautical Society of India, is an Honorary Fellow of the Computer Society of India and a Founder Vice-President of the Sensors Research Society, India.

Awarded for work contributing to major advances or contributions in aerospace.

THE BEAGLE 2 MARS MISSION ENGINEERING TEAMThis award is in recognition of the Team’s triumph of engineering and ingenuity which underpinned a successful descent and landing of the Beagle 2 probe on Mars.

Beagle 2’s landing on Mars represents a significant success for the UK at the very first attempt. With no demonstrable heritage in planetary landers in the UK or Europe, the Mission Engineering team comprised many individuals with years of spacecraft experience from across the UK’s space industry, supported by selected specialists from Europe and the USA.

The R P Alston Memorial Medal is awarded for practical achievement associated with the flight testing of aircraft

MR ERIC FITZPATRICKSENIOR ROTARY WING TUTOR, EMPIRE TEST PILOTS’ SCHOOL

These awards are in recognition of Mr Fitzpatrick’s outstanding work towards the Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS) instructional effort over 23 years on the school staff and his inspirational technical ability in all aspects of flight testing. His mastery of the ETPS syllabus and publications has led to significant improvements in both national and international flight test training and his advice is regularly sought by flight test schools and establishments worldwide. Mr Fitzpatrick and his world-wide reputation for excellence represent a pinnacle in flight testing instructional achievement.

Mr Fitzpatrick flew helicopters with both the Royal Marines and Army Air Corps before becoming an instructor. In 1986 he graduated from the Empire Test Pilots’ School course where he was awarded the Westland trophy as the best rotary wing pilot. After tours as a test pilot and squadron commander he returned to ETPS as a flight tutor in 1992. For the last 23 years he has been involved in the training of over 400 test pilots and flight test engineers from all over the world. He has 8,000 flying hours with 76 different types in his logbook. He is co-author of a book on helicopter test and evaluation.

The Turnbuckle Award is conferred for long and valued service in the field of aircraft maintenance.

MAJOR MICHAEL ‘GUS’ DENNISSENIOR ENGINEERING SPECIALIST — UK ATTACK HELICOPTER FORCE

These awards are in recognition of Major Dennis’ contribution to UK Defence Aviation as an engineering leader, innovator and champion of professional standards in a career spanning over 35 years.

Major Dennis joined the Army as an apprentice Aircraft Technician in 1977. Having risen through the ranks he is now Senior Engineering Specialist for the UK Attack Helicopter Force. During his career he has conducted trials on military helicopters and airships, fielded new aircraft into service and delivered engineering support to Army Aviation worldwide, often in hostile environments. Appointed to the Military Aviation Authority in 2010 he served on the UK Flight Safety Committee, subsequently returning to Joint Helicopter Command as Chief Air Engineer for Apache. He assumed his current appointment on formation of the Apache Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation.

The e-Go project started in 2007 and achieved first flight in October 2013. The aircraft won the Light Aircraft Association’s design competition in 2007. It was designed to comply with the United Kingdom single-seat deregulated microlight class, as well as to comply with the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale microlight rules. The design features a cantilever mid wing, a canard foreplane, a single-seat enclosed cockpit, fixed tricycle landing gear and a single Rotron e-Go Wankel engine in pusher configuration. Construction is from a combination of carbon fibre and foam.

DR KHALID AHMED GHARIBDIRECTOR, AVIATION MEDICINE DEPARTMENT, SUDAN CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY

Dr Gharib is being awarded the Society Bronze Medal in recognition of his work at the heart of aviation medicine governance in both Sudan and Saudi Arabia and, in particular, for his contribution in setting up and subsequently leading two civil aviation medicine departments, thus advancing the management and safety of civil aviation in both nations.

Dr Gharib started to work as an Aviation Medicine Expert with the Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) in 1985 and obtained a Diploma in Aviation Medicine, Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Royal College of Physicians, UK in 1999. He joined the General Authority of Civil Aviation, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in the capacity of Aviation Medicine Expert, affiliated to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), to establish the Aviation Medicine Department in 2006. He has written around 30 articles in Aviation Medicine to enlighten the civil pilots in the Arabic World.

E-GO AEROPLANES DEVELOPMENT TEAMThis award is in recognition of the Team’s achievement and innovation in creating a unique single-seat aircraft that is fun to fly, easy to handle, stylish, ergonomic and very efficient. The achievement is amplified by the fact that the aircraft was brought to market on a very modest budget.

Specialist Awards

The Society’s Specialist Awards are intended to cover the full range of aerospace disciplines. These Awards are given to both individuals and teams.

Specialist Gold AwardAccompanied by the Roger Green Medal

Awarded for exceptional work, which has led to substantial advances or contributions within specialist disciplines in the aerospace industry. The Roger Green Medal is awarded for a significant and lasting contribution to the theory or practical development of human factors as applied in aerospace.

DR ROBERT LEEINTERNATIONAL CONSULTANT, HUMAN FACTORS AND SYSTEM SAFETY

These awards are in recognition of Dr Lee’s world-class contribution to aviation safety management, especially his promotion of human factors and a systems approach in the investigation and prevention of aircraft accidents.

In 1976 Dr Lee became the first Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) psychologist to serve on military aircraft accident investigations. He joined the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation in 1983, and was its Director from 1989-99, transforming the Bureau from a reactive agency to a multi-disciplinary organisation that concentrated equally on proactive accident prevention and safety enhancement. Since 2000 he has continued his commitment to aviation safety as a leading international consultant in human factors and systems safety to airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, regulators and accident investigation agencies. He is a Group Captain in the RAAF Specialist Reserve.

Team Specialist Gold Award

Awarded for exceptional work which has led to substantial advances or contributions within specialist disciplines in the aerospace industry.

AW609 TILT ROTOR AUTOROTATION FLIGHT TEST TEAMAgustaWestland

This award recognises the Team’s achievement in demonstrating a comprehensive autorotation envelope in relation to the first tilt rotor to seek Civil Certification. The AgustaWestland flight test team carried out a flight test programme to investigate the AW609 Tilt-Rotor autorotation entry and recovery in All Engine Inoperative (AEI) conditions. This flight trial that had never before been attempted on a tilt rotor platform as part of Civil Certification. Its successful completion set new certification standards and represented a crucial step towards Type Certification.

Beginning in 2003 as a joint endeavour, the global AgustaWestland AW609 programme established operations comprising specialists from the UK, Italy, and the United States. It is now wholly owned by AgustaWestland. The test

team comprised the flight crew and technical specialists in the fields of flight mechanics, loads, fatigue and flight controls. Based in Arlington alongside the test article and with the FAA Certification Office close by, the test team benefitted from co-location of its members with reachback to the wider AW organisation as required. The time difference nonetheless regularly forced the on-site team to operate autonomously.

MR PETER HACKNEYTEAM SENIOR THREAT & VULNERABILITY ANALYST, AIR PLATFORM PROTECTION TEST & EVALUATION SQUADRON, RAF WADDINGTON

Mr Hackney receives the Specialist Silver Award in recognition of his work, sustained over more than the last decade, which has been fundamental in developing and refining UK air platform countermeasures against the guided infra-red threat. This includes the implementation of highly complex sequences of advanced flares, and directed laser countermeasures to safeguard UK and allied aircraft across numerous theatres of operation and has unquestionably prevented the subsequent loss of aircraft and lives.

Mr Hackney joined MASS in 1999 (part of the Cohort Group) and is now the Lead Analyst of a multi-disciplinary team of highly specialised, scientists and engineers drawn from industry and MoD, integrated within the UK Air Warfare Centre. His team provides the in depth analysis of the IR and RF guided missile threat to UK air operations worldwide. This insight, with detailed knowledge of aircraft defensive aids suites, and the analysis of extensive flight trials, enables the development and optimisation of the countermeasure response required to defeat the complex guided threat to UK and Allied air platforms.

Awarded for exceptional work which has led to significant advances or contributions within specialist disciplines in the aerospace industry.

G650 AERODYNAMIC WING DESIGN TEAMGULFSTREAM AEROSPACE

The Specialist Team Silver Award is being awarded to Dr Robert Mills and Professor Antony Jameson in recognition of their aerodynamic design of the Gulfstream G650 wing. Using state-of-the-art Navier-Stokes design methods based on the adjoint formulation developed by Jameson since 1988, together with innovative aerodynamic design strategies, their work on wing and wing integration aerodynamics produced a notably efficient, low transonic drag aerodynamic design which not only involved CFD calculations correlating exceptionally well with wind-tunnel data and aircraft performance, but also delivered the fastest civil aircraft of its class.

MR TIM EDWARDSHEAD OF ENGINEERING, AEROSPACE SYSTEMS, ATKINS

Mr Edwards receives the Specialist Bronze Award in recognition of his contributions and achievements in the application of fibre reinforced technology in the aerospace industry since 2002 and in pioneering the use of the methods he has developed in civil engineering. This is while continuing to help advance the adoption, implementation, analysis and certification of composite component materials. The way in which he has taken his expertise to other industries, including infrastructure and renewable energy, helping to meet new challenges and serving as an ambassador of the aerospace sector’s focus on engineering excellence, is also recognised.

Mr Edwards joined British Aerospace, Filton, as an undergraduate apprentice in 1979 and, following graduation from Imperial College in Aeronautical Engineering in 1983, worked in the stress office on the Airbus A320. After a brief spell at Rolls-Royce and seven years as a consultant with Frazer-Nash, he returned to the airframe industry, becoming engaged in the analysis of carbon composite structures for the A400M military transport. Joining Atkins in 2004, he took a leading role in the certification of both the A380 and A400M aircraft and he is now Head of Engineering, overseeing innovation and governance for the aerospace sector.

Specialist Bronze Award

Awarded for work of merit, which has led to advances or contributions within specialist disciplines in the aerospace industry.

MR JOHN DOVEYFORMER HEAD OF TORNADO LOADS, BAE SYSTEMS

Mr Dovey receives the Specialist Bronze Award in recognition of his technical leadership and contributions as the BAC/BAE Systems Head of the Tornado Loads Team from the start of the design through to service clearance. As Deputy Aerodynamics Team Leader on the Experimental Aircraft Programme (EAP), he influenced the final configuration of the aircraft. Mr Dovey is also recognised for the way in which he has shared and passed on his knowledge and experience to junior engineers and others across the aerospace community throughout his career.

Mr Dovey joined Hunting Percival Aircraft in 1954 as a Design Engineering apprentice and later moved to BAC Warton where he became Head of the Tornado Loads Team. He served as Deputy Aerodynamics Team Leader on the EAP leading to Eurofighter Typhoon, which benefited from his proposed design innovations. In 1988 he became leader of the Aerodynamics Configuration Design and Performance Team, on New Aircraft Projects. Since retiring from BAE Systems in 1992 he has completed 23 ESDU Data Items, on the aerodynamics of high-lift systems and on aerodynamic fixes on aircraft.

SQUADRON LEADER JASON DAVENHILLROYAL AIR FORCE

Squadron Leader Davenhill receives the Specialist Bronze Award in recognition of his role as an advocate and pioneer of the Aircrew Performance Coaching Scheme. His personal drive and commitment first established this remarkable scheme which he then successfully promoted throughout the Army, Royal Navy and RAF. His achievement in collaboration with the Centre for Human Factors Training and Loughborough University will continue to ensure a whole generation of military aircrew is able to fulfil its potential.

Squadron Leader Jason Davenhill is currently in a staff appointment on operations in Jordan working with a UK/US coalition. He is experienced in instructing both fixed wing and rotary to all levels from university students to front line pilots, being a Chinook, Squirrel and Bell 412 Griffin Qualified Helicopter Instructor and Grob T115E Tutor Qualified Flying Instructor. He has been at the forefront of the RAF’s Aircrew Performance Coaching scheme.



Team Specialist Bronze Award


GULFSTREAM/BAE SYSTEMS CIVIL ACTIVE CONTROL SIDESTICK TEAMThis award is in recognition of the Team’s achievement in successfully leveraging the Active Control Sidestick design from military programmes and implementing significant product improvements to meet FAA/EASA regulatory requirements for integrity, availability and design assurance. This has provided flight crews with improved situational awareness, visibility and comfort in the flight deck.

The Gulfstream/BAE Systems team entered a joint development programme in 2010. A Preliminary Design Review occurred in 2011 and a Critical Design Review in 2012. Hardware was developed and delivered to Gulfstream’s simulation facility and systems integration bench in 2012, followed by delivery of aircraft components in 2013. The team entered into hardware qualification and software verification in 2014. The system was declared Flightworthy with Active Mode Enabled in early 2015 in preparation for the G500 first flight. The wider team is represented by key team members drawn from BAE Systems, Rochester, UK and Gulfstream, Savannah, GA, USA.

These awards are in recognition of the Team’s ground-breaking contribution to the success of the Rosetta Mission, specifically the development of the necessary complex mathematical models to simulate the gravitational and dynamic characteristics of the comet and their effect on the spacecraft. This required planning and execution of the challenging on-board operations to guide the Rosetta spacecraft into a close orbit around the comet and to set the lander Philae on a trajectory to land successfully on the comet surface.

The Rosetta Flight Control and Flight Dynamics Team, formed at the European Space Operations Centre of the European Space Agency at the end of the 1990s, has been in charge for the definition, planning, and execution of all flight operations of the Rosetta mission. The mission flew

Unmanned Air Systems Specialist Group Award

MR PHILIP TARRYDIRECTOR, XYLEM AERO

Mr Tarry receives this award in recognition of his instrumental role in the development of the small Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) sector in the UK at a most critical time. Taking up chairmanship of a fledgling organisation, he has given it a clear position and direction in the aerospace sector as a result of his vision, leadership and tireless dedication.

Philip Tarry is a director of Xylem Aero. As the co-founder and first officially appointed Chairman of the Association of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (ARPAS-UK), he was instrumental in overseeing the integration of the association with all necessary regulatory and legislative bodies. His contribution has paved the way for operations in congested areas, and the development of safety partnerships with both the CAA and NATS, which continue to champion the development of regulations that support the growth of the industry. Growing the membership from ten members to over 300, he has now stepped down and is focusing on his own business.

Rotorcraft Specialist Group Award

FLIGHT LIEUTENANT MICHAEL STAFFORDROTARY WING OPERATIONAL EVALUATION & TRAINING UNIT

This award is in recognition of Flight Lieutenant Stafford’s selfless dedication to the continued development of new Defensive Aid Suites that have protected UK service personnel flying on operations for the past decade.

Flight Lieutenant Stafford has enjoyed a varied 30-year flying career with the RAF on both fixed wing and rotary platforms. During his time with the Rotary Wing Operational Evaluation & Training Unit he was involved in a variety of rotary wing projects and trials covering a wide range of generic helicopter capability. He specialised in defensive aids and mission systems and was heavily involved with the development, and introduction into service, of a new defensive aide suite architecture, first on Chinook and then on Puma. He recently retired from the RAF and is now working in the defence industry.

MR JEFFREY NAROSYSTEMS ENGINEER, EXPRESSJET AIRLINES

Formerly of Rolls-Royce in Indianapolis, Mr Naro receives this award in recognition of his contributions to both the combustion and materials engineering organisations of the company as well as both the computational and experimental realms of turbine performance, demonstrating a practical and thorough engineering approach.

Mr Naro received his BS in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2010 and his MS in Aerospace Engineering in 2012 from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Upon completion of his degree, he began working at the Rolls-Royce Corporation as a combustion analyst, performing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of low-smoke combustion liners. Mr Naro also worked as the Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) lead environmental test engineer in Indianapolis. His combustion tests of CMC blade tracks for the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine programme earned him the John Bush Young Engineer Award for Rolls-Royce in 2015.

Young Persons’ Achievement Commendations

MR RICHARD HAINESROTORS ANALYST, AGUSTAWESTLAND

Mr Haines receives this award in recognition of his ability to resolve complex blade dynamic behaviour demonstrated through work analysing rotor behaviour on the AW159 Wildcat. The Commendation also recognises the fact that he is currently the structural design lead for the RGF3 tilt rotor blade which will fly in 2016 and will represent a milestone event for European aviation.

Mr Haines gained a First Class MEng Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southampton in 2008 and began as a graduate at Blade Dynamics, a company focused on improving the design and manufacture of composite wind turbine blades. After working in the UK and US for Blade Dynamics, Richard moved to AgustaWestland in 2013, where he now works on the design and development of helicopter rotors. He has worked on the AW159 Wildcat and has played a key role in the structural design of the composite rotor blades on the Next Generation Tilt Rotor Aircraft.

MR JOHN EASUMGRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT, PENN STATE UNIVERSITY

Mr Easum receives this award in recognition of his record of excellence in scholarly, research and professional pursuits, including holding national and international titles from aerospace competitions. As a winner of the Barry M Goldwater award in 2013 and a 2015 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program applicant, he has continued to show an ability to develop new and impressive ideas in the fields of computational science and engineering, particularly relating to aerospace culture.

Mr Easum is currently a first-year graduate student at Penn State University where he is pursuing his PhD in Electrical Engineering. Originally Mr Easum is from Rockwall, Texas, USA. He became interested in aerospace through competing in the Team America Rocketry Challenge during high school, where he led his team to winning national and international titles in 2011. Mr Easum received his BS degree in Engineering Physics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). While at ERAU, he started a successful research program in the ERAU Honours Program studying small-scale wind turbines. Mr Easum has since been pursuing innovative computational approaches to engineering design as a hobby and as a research assistant in the Penn State Computational Electromagnetics and Antennas Research Laboratory.

MR MATTHEW KEARROTORS ENGINEER, AGUSTAWESTLAND

Mr Kear receives this award in recognition of his ability to grasp technical tasks quickly, work largely unsupervised and deliver results to schedule while being regarded by his peers as an exceptionally able individual. His work in aerodynamic tool development and rotor tuning has received particular praise.

Having recently completed a two-year postgraduate scheme with AgustaWestland, Mr Kear is now an engineer within the Rotor Systems department. During the graduate scheme, Mr Kear moved around the business working on a number of projects. These included the development of an analysis tool to determine the rigid body modes of helicopters and a software suite that can be used to calculate the sectional stiffness of helicopter blades from 3D finite element models. Prior to joining the company, he graduated with a Distinction in Aerospace Engineering (MSc). During his studies Mr Kear focused his efforts on developing a fully automated aerodynamic optimisation programme to improve the performance of a vertical axis wind turbine blade.

Awarded to a young person whose studies will be enhanced by attending a UK or European Conference with at least some content related to either helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft safety.

MR MARK DUNKERLEYROTORS ANALYST, AGUSTAWESTLAND

Mr Dunkerley receives this award in recognition of his talent in operating across all aspects of the engineering challenge to apply his experience of structural design and test, technical liaison with operators and technical support to new programmes at the bidding stage. He has shown strong networking abilities across national boundaries.

Mr Dunkerley graduated with a First Class MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bath before joining AgustaWestland in Yeovil as a postgraduate trainee in 2011. Through the postgraduate scheme he was able to offer support to the whole helicopter design process starting from the requirements capture phase, through to production support and finally structural testing. Since finishing the postgraduate scheme in 2013, he has been part of the Rotor Systems Design group undertaking simulation and analysis to support the European Aviation Safety Agency and Federal Aviation Administration (EASA/FAA) certification of new products and particularly specialising in the demonstration of bird-strike compliance.

MR SIMON CHIVERTONGRADUATE MECHANICAL ENGINEER, MBDA UK

Mr Chiverton presented his paper titled ‘The Aerodynamics of Badminton: Redesigning the Shuttlecock’ at the Stevenage Branch annual Young Persons Lecture competition.

Mr Chiverton graduated from the University of Manchester in 2014 with an MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is now on MBDA UK’s Formal Development Programme; putting his technical skills gained at university into practice, and loves to play badminton in his free time. He enjoys problems that require the application of engineering theory in a creative way.

MR CHARLES MUIRUNIVERSITY OF THE WEST OF ENGLAND

Mr Muir presented his paper titled ‘The Challenges of Hypersonic Flight’ at the Reggie Brie Award Competition at the Yeovil Branch.

Mr Muir is currently in his third year at university studying towards an MEng in Aerospace Engineering at the University of the West of England, specialising in the design pathway. He compiled the paper ‘The Challenges of Hypersonic Flight’ while on a year’s placement at AgustaWestland where he worked in a variety of different departments including Operational Support, Simulation and Technology and Mission Requirements. He is especially interested in research and new development in the aerospace industry, particularly in hypersonic flight and the space industry which is an area he is pursuing in his dissertation research and hopefully in his future career.

MR ALEX COOKAIR GRADUATE, QINETIQ

Mr Cook presented his paper titled ‘Creativity in Aerospace’ at the Boscombe Down Branch’s Joe Morrall Young Person’s Lecture.

Mr Cook graduated with an MEng in Aeronautical Engineering from Loughborough University in 2014 and has just completed his first year working at QinetiQ. He began his career at QinetiQ in the Avionics and Mission Systems department, looking at the integration of weapon systems onto combat aircraft. Mr Cook is now in a secondment role in the Business Assurance department, specifically focusing on business improvement and innovation. His interest in engineering is varied, but he particularly enjoyed working on turbomachinery and propulsion at university and would relish an opportunity to work in that field in the future.

SR RAÚL GONZÁLEZ MUÑOZINDUSTRIAL PhD STUDENT, AIRBUS/CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY

Sr González Muñoz presented his paper titled ‘Software in Aerospace Industry: A Rising Criticality’ at the Cranfield Branch Annual Lecture Competition.

Sr González Muñoz graduated with a First Class MSc degree in Knowledge Management for Innovation at Cranfield University and with a Masters of Administration from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, thanks to a joint degree programme between the two universities. Sr González Muñoz is currently conducting an industrial PhD focused on software lifecycle in aerospace, in a collaboration between Cranfield University and Airbus.

MR JAIDEV SANKETIEMIRATES AVIATION UNIVERSITY, DUBAI, UAE

Mr Sanketi presented his paper titled ‘Mars Orbiter Mission — Mangalyaan’ at the UAE Dubai Branch Lecture Competition.

Mr Sanketi is currently in his final year of his BSc in Aeronautical Engineering at the Emirates Aviation University, Dubai and hopes to pursue a Masters in Aerospace Engineering in the future.

Mr Sanketi worked for a short time with the research team of the Indian Space Research Organisation during their Mars Orbiter Mission, and this subsequently formed the basis of his presentation and paper. Having briefly been an intern with Emirates Airlines (Dubai) and IndiGo Airlines (India), his interests include space sciences and conceptual aircraft design.

Miss Kushwaha presented her paper titled ‘Project Dragonfly: Sail to the Stars’ at the Cranfield Branch Annual Lecture Competition.

Miss Kushwaha graduated in 2012 with a red diploma in Aeronautical and Rocket Engineering from Moscow Aviation Institute. Following this she joined SpaceMaster (Joint European Master in Space Science and Technology), which allowed her to study in Germany, Sweden and the UK. Miss Kushwaha completed her MSc in Astronautics and Space Engineering at Cranfield University, with her Master’s thesis completed in collaboration with Oxford Space Systems on developing a deployable concept for microsatellites. Miss Kushwaha particularly enjoys the early phase of the projects with concept and design development.

Mr Stephens presented his paper titled ‘A Method for Lorry Underbody Aerodynamic Investigation’ at the Cambridge Branch Sir Michael Marshall Lecture Competition.

Mr Stephens graduated with a First Class MEng degree in General Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2013. He is now studying for a PhD on ‘The Aerodynamics of Road Lorries’, where he is developing new techniques to study the vehicle underbody with an aim of reducing fuel consumption.
