Dear Friends,
Please note that the starting time of the Friends General Membership Meeting has been moved up to 3:00 PM from 4:00 PM. The meeting will re-
main the third (3rd) Thursday of the month.
Our checking account balance as of 03/22/2012 is $5,653.74 Jerry Porter
This month has been a busy one, with a trip to Denton and beginning computer classes. The Denton trip was a result of an invitation to partici-pate in the PEARL (Promoting and Enhanc-ing the Advancement of Rural Libraries) project. Students in the Certificate of Advanced Studies pro-gram are acting as men-tors and facilitators with rural librarians to help prepare and present out-reach programs in rural areas. We met to discuss the parameters of the program and begin plans for developing an out-reach program here in Atlanta. The first step was to survey area residents and from those answers decide what kind of out-reach program to devel-op. We surveyed patrons who came into the library
and then took the surveys out into the public. At-tendees at the Rotary Club's Annual Spelling Bee were asked to partici-pate. Debbie Wisdom and I also went to Wal-Mart and set up a table to get input from shoppers there. The level of partici-pation was great, with over 250 of the general needs surveys submitted. Those data are still being examined, but we did get some great input. The next step with the PEARL project is to decide on our outreach program and develop a plan. You will be hearing more about that soon. The computer clas-ses have begun with a bang. We signed up stu-dents, and with area in-formation outlets the re-sponse was astounding. Because the grant bought us 20 laptops, we were
limited to that number in each class. Surprisingly, we filled the Wednesday basic class very quickly and decided to open an-other section on Thurs-days. It too filled, and we have a waiting list for the basic class that will begin in June! The other classes, Of-fice Products, email and online, and job skills are also going well. We had a small hiccup with our in-ternet, so just pray that all goes well next week. Summer Reading is coming up, so expect to be hearing about lots of exciting activities sur-rounding that activity. We are planning to get the community and adults involved this year, so consider participating as a volunteer or partici-pant.

Friends Insider Information !! The 2012 Annual Book Sale is scheduled for Thursday 10:00 AM through Saturday 2:00 PM, MAY 3rd through May 5th
The planning for the 2012 Annual Book Sale is well underway. During our last Membership meeting, we laid the groundwork for the sale.
During new business the FOL’s: a) committed $1,500.00 to the Sum-mer Reading Program. b) agreed to purchase 4 tables for general Library use. c) agreed to purchase individu-al book stands for use in open areas where patrons browse materials. Publisher: Jerry Porter
Subscription: $5.00/yr KID’S CORNER Maybe you have a child or grandchild that wants a pet, maybe a bird or cat. The Library has numerous resources on caring for commonly acquired pets as well as a “youthful” analysis of why a Stegosaurus would make a great pet. This month’s selection include caring for canaries and a story about a disappearing cat. The Crabby Cat Caper is about a young lady, Dee Dee, and her cat, Master Whiskers, who chooses to vanish, of all times, on the way to a cat show. Do a Catalog Search for “PETS” and see what you come up!

The resources housed in the up-per floor are property of the Atlanta Public Library, but are maintained by both the Cass County Family His-tory Center (CCFHC) and the Cass County Genealogy Society (CCGS). They are available for research, but can NOT be checked out!
The Cass County Gene-alogical Society will meet Tuesday, April 10th, 6:30 p.m., at the Horne Enterprise Building, Pinecrest Drive at South Louise, Atlanta, Texas.
Our guest speaker will be former President of the Texas State Genealogi-cal Society, Marynell Bry-ant, from Sulphur Springs. She will be sharing infor-mation on "how to" re-search specific areas of genealogy. Members and
guests are invited to attend.
With more information on fami-lies, churches, schools, etc. being given to the CCGS to preserve, an "SOS" was sent out to the public and organiza-tions for volunteers. From the Tram-mel's Trace DAR, we have had Linda Ballard, Charleen Granberry, Connie Draper, Kathy Valenta, Kathleen Brooks, Olice Davis, Traci Jones. Other individuals are Janis Elliott and Jana Rogers. The CCGS could use even more volunteers. For more information, please call 903-826-5473 or 903-796-4456.
Book Donations are increasing. This past month we have had the fol-lowing books donated and shelved: Cherokee Roots, Volume 1 & 2,
Bob Blankenship (a census of the Cherokee Indian from 1851 through 1909 west of the Mississippi.

We often speak of the need and value of our volunteers and many times we don’t see the their results and can not put a dol-lar value on their ser-vice. Recently, the Li-brary was the benefi-ciary of such volun-teer work and the re-sults of their handi-work are readily evi-dent. All you have to do is look at the park-

By the time you read or re-ceive this newsletter, you will have less than 17 days to file your taxes. Remember, if you file for an EXTENSION, you are still liable for the payment of your “tax due” balance. If you fail to do so, the IRS will impose a late filing and
penalty fee. Choose with care any private or commercial tax prep business. 1) Ensure they provide year-round tax support in case of a random IRS audit. 2) Have state tax prep software if you live/work in LA, AR, OK or another state. 3) Their tax professionals have adequate
training. Six (6) to eight (8) hours training in the use of the software does not make them professional!
