In your garden you mightencounter bumblebees, sweat bees, digger bees, leafcutter bees, minerbees, and the list goes on. Standunder an apple tree in full bloomnext spring and you won’t be able tocount the number or species of polli-nators working the open blossoms.
Different species seek flowers atvarious starting times, and if onlyearly blooms are available, bees maynot find the pollen and nectar need-ed to support the next generation.
Good choices to support bees inspring, summer and fall could startwith cleome (spider flower), cosmos, poppy, black-eyed Susan, bergamot(Monarda), salvia, Russian sage, anyfruit tree, black locust tree, holly, hydrangea, mockorange and redbud.
Should you decide to shrink yourlawn area in a “bee-friendly” effort, cut it up with perimeter beds for
flowers, shrubs and trees, or create“island” beds. A cottage gardenwould be densely packed with avariety of plants, and those withplenty of space could make a mead-ow garden of bee-friendly floweringplants.
Even if you have a tiny space, setin catmint, blanket flower, gaura, salvias, all kinds of mints and otherherbs. Bees will thrive there.
Before you apply a systemic pes-ticide on any property, consider this:all parts of a plant absorb it, fromroots to flowers, and it can persistfor months or even years in bothplant and soil.
Finally, don’t fear bees. Theybasically sting only when forced todefend themselves and their nests, and if you do encounter one or some, the best solution is to be calm andnot touch or threaten by swatting orslapping. Either may increase yourchance of being stung.
