Shane and Rose Savage came from Moncton NB to play in the North American Pairs Flight C and stayed a few more days to play in Gold Rush events. In between sessions, another player came to the Bulletin office to praise Shane’s sportsmanship for suggesting a director call that he knew would disadvantage him. In addition to being good sports, the Savages are also comedians. “We’re having a good time in Philadelphia. I wish my wife was playing a little better,” Shane joked. Rose laughed and shot back, “If only I could tell you what his sportsmanship is really like,” which earned a laugh in return.

West North East South Pass 1♦ Pass 1♠ Dbl 2♠ Pass 4♠ All Pass

Opening lead: ♣KBidding commentary: As North, the system

opening is 1♦ with this hand pattern. This is the only distribution one should have for a diamond opening with onlt three diamonds. A 1♦ opening with this distribution occurs about 5% of the time 1♦ is opened. As responder, assume your partner has four or more diamonds when you hear partner open 1♦. Don’t play for exceptions! If you do, you will be wrong 95% of the time!

West’s passed-hand takeout double shows 9-11 HCP with four cards, minimum, in the two unbid suits. East is entitled to re-evaluate upwards with

a likely nine-card spade fit (worth an automatic 2-point upgrade) plus wild side suit distribution, worth another 2 points. The South hand logs in at about 13 revalued points and is worth a shot at game. If 4♠ seems a bit rich for your blood, try 3♠. North, with a maximum, will raise to 4♠.

Defensive commentary: As East, assuming the lead of the king is from the K-Q and not the A-K, tend to encourage holding the jack. However, with your diamond holding, it is better to discourage in clubs (♣2) to encourage a shift to diamonds.

As South, fearing a diamond shift, win the ♣A, cross to the ♠A and run the ♥K to West’s ace, discarding a diamond. Assuming West wins and shifts to a diamond, win the ace, discard your remaining two diamonds on the ♥Q and ♥J and concede a club. The most you can lose after this is maybe a spade trick. The idea is not to cash the ♠K before the dummy is void in clubs. If you do, and the player who wins your club exit may be able to cash the ♠Q, depriving you of a club ruff in dummy. Down you go. You could lose two clubs (instead of one) the ♥A and the ♠Q. Be careful about surrendering trump control (♠K) until dummy is void in the suit you plan to ruff.

Getting to the Convention Center

The shortest route to the playing area in the Convention Center is to exit the Marriott through the doors near the front desk. Make a left going west on Filbert Street and then a right onto 13th Street and go one block north to Arch Street. The best Convention Center entrance to use is on the northwest corner of 13th and Arch. This is a short walk, less than a quarter of a mile.

We strongly suggest that you do not use the skybridge from the Marriott to enter the Convention Center. This will take you to a part of the building that makes it difficult to find the bridge play.

first quarter and widening the lead by about 10 IMPs each quarter thereafter. The event is limited to players with less than 10,000 masterpoints.

It was a first-time limited NABC win for four members of the team. Gross and Castillo won the Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs last fall in San Diego, and Gross previously won the Mini-Spingold in 2011.

Top-seeded Nick Nickell trailed slightly at the half against Gary Cohler (No. 17), but was in complete control in the second half, winning the contest 142-98.

Marty Fleisher (No. 2) disposed of Stan Tulin (No. 15) 166-93, with Fleisher leading all four quarters.

John Diamond (No. 3) and Daniel Zagorin (No. 19) had the closest match of the entire round, with a handful of IMPs separating the squads until Diamond won the last quarter 34-19 to prevail 124-113.

No. 4 Team Lavazza survived against No. 20 Richard Schwartz, winning 132–123, but No. 5 James Cayne was sent to the sidelines when they lost to No. 21 Mary Ann Berg, 140-125.

The most lopsided final score of the round came from the matchup between No. 6 Andrew Rosenthal and No. 11 Jim Mahaffey, in which the latter prevailed, 113-57.

No. 26 Chen Zhao continued their winning ways by defeating Hemant Lall and company, 113-73.

Second in the 0–10,000 Knockout: David Pelka, captain Viktor Anikovich, Bob Kent, Ellen Kent and Alan Daniels.

Early Life Masters

Work and family life pulled Troxel away from the game for decades.

“My career made playing difficult, but I tried to keep up with the game by reading bridge magazines. And I kept my membership current in the ACBL. But there was a 30-year gap when I just didn’t play.”

In 2016, however, Troxel attended a birthday party for bridge-playing friend Patricia Mills, in Hendersonville, where he and his wife had moved two decades previously. The party had a bridge theme, so Troxel found his LM gold card and wore it around his neck in a plastic holder. Mills was fascinated with the card because she had never seen one. That got Troxel to wonder if there are any active members of the ACBL who became Life Master before 1955.

His story was published in the February issue of the Bridge Bulletin, and several players came forward to say that they indeed had lower LM numbers, several of whom are well-known to members of the ACBL.

Life Master No. 228: Bruce ElliottThe Canadian

Bridge Federation’s Hall of Fame website notes that Bruce Elliott was born in 1922 and has lived all his life in the Toronto area. He became a Life Master in 1950.

Elliott’s partnership with Percy Sheardown was one of the best in North America in the 1950s and ’60s,and their team with Eric Murray and Sami Kehela ranks as the best Canadian

foursome of all time.Elliott won the Chicago Trophy (now the

Reisinger) in 1948, playing with Agnes Gordon, the first of his four major North American titles. He won the Chicago Trophy again in 1951, playing with Percy Sheardown.

With Sheardown, Kehela and Murray, Elliot won the 1964 Spingold Master Knockout Teams, and the foursome successfully defended the title in 1965, becoming the only foursome to date to achieve such a feat.

Elliott represented Canada twice in the World Team Olympiad, winning a bronze medal in Deauville, France, in 1968.

Life Master No. 269: Bruce GowdyBruce Gowdy

of Toronto holds the record for being the youngest player ever to win a major knockout event – the Spingold Master Knockout Teams – at the age of 19 in 1949. He won the Canadian National Open Teams five consecutive times, from 1949 to 1953.

The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge began tracking the Youngest Life Master in 1952 with Richard Freeman (who was 18 at the time), but prior to Freeman, Gowdy claims the record: “I know there are a few members who have since become LMs at a younger age, but for discussion purposes, I was the original Youngest Life Master when I reached 300 masterpoints in January 1950, at age 19. I became an LM in an open pairs event in Niagara Falls NY, playing with Margaret Bell (who later became Bruce Elliott’s wife).”

A WBF World Life Master, Gowdy represented Canada three times in the World Team Olympiad (1960, 1972 and 1976), winning a bronze medal in 1972. He also won a silver medal in the 2002 World Senior Pairs.

Life Master No. 346: Brent Woodson ElmoreBrent Woodson Elmore earned her Gold Card in

1952, making her the first female Life Master in her home state of North Carolina. (Her brother, William B. Woodson, who invented the Woodson Two-Way Notrump, was Life Master No. 289. He died in 1989.)

“My brother and I started going to national tournaments in 1948, so we got to know some exceptional players. Charles Goren and Johnny Crawford both came to our hometown of Salisbury NC to give lectures to our friends in the area.

“At a National Mixed Pairs, playing against Goren and Helen Sobel, I got to a 6♣ contract. Goren led the ♥A. Dummy came down with:

♠A K x x ♥K Q J x ♦A ♣A x x x. “Right away, he shifted to a low club. My club

holding was Q-x-x-x-x, so I had to let it ride. Imagine my delight when the 10 came from Sobel who held J-10 doubleton. Goren had led low from K-x: He was sure I had the ♣Q J and would finesse if left to my own devices, so he led the low club, hoping I would play for a singleton king in RHO’s hand. I could not possibly make my contract any other way.

“I attended the first Bermuda Bowl in 1950 in Bermuda at the Castle Harbour Hotel. In fact, I kept hand records for Goren. Also, my husband and I flew over with the U.S. team who played at the world championships in Turin, Italy, in 1960.”

Life Master No. 418: Billy RosenBilly Rosen won the Bermuda Bowl in 1954

and placed second in 1955. He was 25 when he won the Bermuda Bowl, the youngest player ever to win that title until 1981 when the record was broken by Robert Levin. He has won eight North American championships. Rosen also won the McKenney Trophy (now the Barry Crane Top 500) in 1953.

Rosen, a WBF Life Master, was inducted in the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 2014 as the recipient of the von Zedtwitz Award.

Life Master No. 456: Eric MurrayEric Murray is one

of the all-time greats of the bridge world. The most successful Canadian player ever, the Hall of Famer started his career playing with Douglas Drury (of convention fame), qualified for his first international team with Charles Coon, had

mixed-pairs successes with Hall of Fame member Agnes Gordon, and became legend with Hall of Famer Sami Kehela.

Murray represented North America in the Bermuda Bowl in 1962, 1966, 1967 and 1974, and represented Canada in other world competitions in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1978, 1980 and 1982. He placed third in the Rosenblum Teams in 1982.

Murray, an ACBL Grand Life Master, won the Team Trials in 1966, the Lou Herman Trophy in 1963, the Vanderbilt in 1961 and 1970; the Spingold in 1964, 1965 and 1968; the Men’s Teams in 1962, the Life Master Men’s Pairs and the Mixed Pairs in 1963; the Men’s Pairs in 1945 and 1955; the Master Mixed Teams in 1956 and 1962; and the Life Master Pairs in 1969. He won the Canadian National Teams Championships in 1980, 1981 and 1987. In 2010, he won the Canadian Senior Team Trials.

Life Master No. 630: Al BlinderDuring 1944 and

1945, 20-year-old Al Blinder served in the U.S. Third Army under General George Patton in Alsace-Lorraine, France. After the war, Blinder took up bridge, and he was awarded his gold card in 1953 at the San Diego Regional. (Also earning his gold card that day was Life Master No. 629, the late Hall of Famer Marshall Miles.)

“From 1955 to 1970, my favorite partner was Joe Nedham of Orinda CA, especially when playing in the Vanderbilt and Spingold KO Teams. At our best, we won four matches in each. One of our top results was defeating a team led by Hall of Famer Al Roth by 2 IMPs at the 1960 Spingold KO in Los Angeles. Our most unusual regional result occurred in the 1960s against a strong Midwestern team. At the half, we were down 46 IMPs, but 16 unbelievable boards later, we finished on top by the same margin: plus 46. Yes, we had scored 92 IMPs in 16 hands!

“Similar to Richard Troxel, my middle years of bridge were interrupted by years of working to maintain a family. During those years, I was playing rubber bridge at home once a week.”

Life Master No. 637: Bud Marsh“On a Sunday

morning in October of 1952, I received a call from a panicky Ralph Cohen (many years later, CEO of the ACBL). The board-a-match teams at the Montreal Regional was scheduled that day, and one of three fellows from Toronto had failed to show up, and they needed me to fill in. In typical fashion, Ralph guaranteed ‘that I would become a Life Master by the end of the day.’ I had about 290 masterpoints at the time, but I had found more interesting ways to spend my weekends. Needless to say, I was released from my movie date and went to meet the other half of the team: Bruce Elliott, who later won two consecutive Spingolds, and Doug (yes, the real) Drury. We won, and I became a Life Master. In January 1953, I received my gold card.

partner Martin Zhao were playing in 299er games, and a couple years before that, so were Olivia and partner Albena Vassileva. Now all four are members of Canada’s national youth teams, and they’ve been playing in national events in Philadelphia. Martin, 14, is on the Under-16 team, and the other three are on the Under-21 team. Both girls are 15 but will turn 16 this year.

Freeman and Zhao qualified for the second day of the Lebhar IMP Pairs in 35th place, and last night they qualified in the Silodor Open Pairs. And Freeman and Vassileva qualified in the Rockwell Mixed Pairs.

The four of them entered the Vanderbilt and drew the last seed (the bottom 10 were randomized). On Monday, they played a four-way match starting against the highest-seeded team not to have a bye. They then faced Richard Pavlicek’s team for the third spot out of the group. They were up 4 IMPs at the half but didn’t make it. “It was a nice experience, a pretty nice moment being up at the half,” Albena said.

“I thought there would be more pressure,” said Olivia. But then she was kibitzing the Vanderbilt when she was 2, so it wasn’t all that new.

She and Albena both started learning bridge in school bridge programs at their elementary schools when they were 7. Jacob already had a few years of playing experience when he started a similar program at his school while in grade 3, but between the volunteer teacher from Unit 166 and his school, they designated the program for grades 4-6 and told him he was too young to participate. He ended up needing special permission to join his own club.

Martin learned the latest at 11, when he was encouraged by his dad to go to a bridge camp, and he was mentored by Nader Hanna. He formed his partnership with Jacob last summer at the Toronto NABC. The first hand he picked up was an extremely strong two-suiter with six spades and seven diamonds. The opponents bid to 5♣, which Jacob doubled, and Martin settled for defending. They set it 800 but lost 16 IMPs because they missed 7♠. “I thought Jacob was never going to play with me again.”

The next day they were planning to play in a regional open pairs but at the last minute decided to try the Wernher Open Pairs. When they qualified for the second day, they decided to continue playing together.

They’ve since been to four regionals and some sectionals, but don’t have much time to play. “I play hockey, and my partner skis, so we don’t play much in the winter,” Jacob said. “And I’m in grade 12, so I have university applications.” He recently made Bronze Life Master and this year has already earned half as many masterpoints as all of 2017, when he gained 230.

Jacob and Martin have experimented with some advanced systems and play a complicated version of 2/1 that some pros gave them, modifying it along the way. “The most important part is conversations away from the table,” Jacob said. “If we’re going to have a long-term partnership, we need to be able to talk about the difficult hands and have productive conversations.”

Life Master No. 798: Walter Richard MayWalter May received his gold card in 1954 at

age 23. Now 87, May has approximately 14,500 masterpoints.

“When I became a Life Master – which was much harder to achieve in 1954 – I believe I was, at the time, the third-youngest person to have achieved the distinction.”

May says that one of his favorite memories came from the 1952 Spingold.

“My partner, Richard Lesser, and I traveled to the nationals without teammates, so we picked up a pair of Life Masters – who couldn’t agree on what conventions they would use – to play in the Spingold. Somehow, we made it to the quarterfinal, where

we met the team of B. Jay Becker, George Rapée, Howard Schenken, Johnny Crawford and Sam Stayman, the best team of that era. There were so many kibitzers surrounding the table that I suggested to my partner that we wait until game time to take our seats. As we made our way through the crowd toward the table, we were stopped halfway by an older man who said, ‘Son, if you want to kibitz, you need to come earlier.’ I replied, ‘Sir, if you want to see the slaughter, we’re the dog meat.’”

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal

a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

Help from the bidding By Mark Itabashi

Information from the bidding is often declarer’s greatest aid, as it was on these two deals from the Rockwell Mixed Pairs. My partner was Veronica McMurdie. Dlr: South ♠ J 8 4 3 2 Vul: None ♥ Q 6 ♦ 6 2 ♣ K 6 5 4 ♠ 10 6 5 ♠ 7 ♥ K J 9 2 ♥ A 8 3 ♦ K 7 4 3 ♦ Q J 9 8 5 ♣ 9 7 ♣ A Q 10 8 ♠ A K Q 9 ♥ 10 7 5 4 ♦ A 10 ♣ J 3 2 West North East South Partner Me 1♣ Pass 1♠ 2♦ 2♠ 3♦ Pass Pass 3♠ Pass Pass 4♦ All Pass

South started with the ♠A K, and I ruffed. The ♦J was covered by the ace, and South exited with a trump, won in dummy with the king.

I then led a club to the queen, cashed the ♣A and ruffed a club. When I called for dummy’s ♠10, I noticed that North did not cover. If South, who had already shown 12 HCP, started with the ♠J or ♠Q, he would have opened 1NT (15-17) if he also held the ♥Q. When I ruffed a second club to dummy, South showed out. Therefore, I played the ♥A and the ♥K, dropping the ♥Q offside, because North had to be 5=2=2=4.

Plus 150 for us was worth 63 out of 64 matchpoints. Dlr: North ♠ K 10 9 Vul: N–S ♥ A 10 5 4 ♦ A J 6 5 3 ♣ 9 ♠ A 8 7 5 4 2 ♠ Q J 6 ♥ Q 7 3 2 ♥ 9 8 6 ♦ 9 ♦ K 10 7 4 ♣ K 4 ♣ Q 6 3 ♠ 3 ♥ K J ♦ Q 8 2 ♣ A J 10 8 7 5 2 West North East South Me Partner 1♦ Pass 1NT 2♠ 3♦ 3♠ 5♦ Pass Pass Dbl All Pass

This overly aggressive contract should always be beaten, but a slip by the opponents allowed it to come home.

East led the ♠Q. After winning the ♠A, West shifted to a heart, won with dummy’s jack. Warned by the double, I now cashed the ♥K and the ♣A, ruffed a club in my hand, and led a low diamond toward the dummy. East could have beaten the contract by winning it and playing another trump, but hoping to get two trump tricks, East ducked. Dummy’s queen won. This was the position: ♠ K 10 ♥ A 10 ♦ A J 6 ♣ — ♠ 8 7 5 4 2 ♠ J 6 ♥ Q 7 ♥ 9 ♦ — ♦ K 10 7 ♣ — ♣ Q ♠ — ♥ — ♦ 8 2 ♣ J 10 8 7 5

I now ruffed a club, cashed the ♥A and ♠K, ruffed a spade and led a good club, pitching my last heart. East, down to ♦K 10 7, had to ruff and lead a trump into my ♦A J.

Plus 750 was a top.

The local NABC Committee selected the ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter, to receive a $5000 gift on behalf of the ACBL Charity Foundation.

Silence is golden?By Barry Rigal

Doug Simson is known for removing all the green cards from his bidding box before he starts a session. “We won’t be needing these, partner!”

When asked why on a particular deal he had taken action, when none appeared necessary, he responded, “I tried passing once, and I didn’t like it.”

However, he reported the following deal to indicate that on occasion, taking the low road could have unexpected results. Simson was West.

Put yourself in declarer’s shoes: Dlr: East ♠ J 4 3 Vul: N–S ♥ 6 ♦ 10 8 5 4 3 ♣ 9 7 5 4

♠ Q 5 2 ♥ A 10 9 3 ♦ A K 9 2 ♣ A K West North East South Pass 1♦ Dbl 3♦(1) Pass 3NT Pass (2) 4♦ Pass 5♦ All Pass

(1) Weak.(2) Slowly. You win the ♥K lead in hand and decide that the

trumps are clearly 3-1 or 4-0. It looks right to ruff a heart to dummy and advance the ♦10, trying to put pressure on East. If he plays low smoothly, you can rise with the ace and reconsider. A fine plan, but ... this is the ful deal: ♠ J 4 3 ♥ 6 ♦ 10 8 5 4 3 ♣ 9 7 5 4 ♠ A K 7 ♠ 10 9 8 6 ♥ K Q J 8 5 4 2 ♥ 7 ♦ Q 7 ♦ J 6 ♣ Q ♣ J 10 8 6 3 2 ♠ Q 5 2 ♥ A 10 9 3 ♦ A K 9 2 ♣ A K

As you can see, this line led to a swift down two. Note that at double-dummy, West might defeat the contract by dropping the ♦Q under the ace if declarer plays that card at trick two.

I suggested to Doug that this might be the start of a new trend. He riposted that this was the exception that proves the rule. But in the future, watch out for those green cards!

The Central Pennsylvania Unit 168 includes the Harrisburg and Lancaster areas.

Dorothy Coopey Daylight Gold Rush PairsSponsored by her daughter Doreese Torrey and friends

Dorothy Coopey was an avid bridge player and an active member of Unit 120, Northeast PA. She loved to play bridge, and wherever she lived in Florida, Arizona or Pennsylvania, she found a place to play. She also loved to play bridge online anytime day or night.

Dorothy will be remembered for her beautiful smile and her kindness to novice players. In recent

years even though she had difficulties, she still had a smile for everyone.

In a more personal tribute, Doreese reminisces: “My mom needed a partner, so she taught me to play bridge. When I became a Life Master on her birthday and called her to tell her the news, she was just as excited as I was, if not more. Sometimes in recent years, I would wake up in the middle of the night and find her playing bridge online.”

Welcome to Unit 112’s two-day regional KO! Unit 112 Central New York is District 4’s northernmost unit – stretching from the Canadian

to Pennsylvania borders. Unit 112 is the largest geographical unit and has the second-largest ACBL membership within District 4.

Players in the unit are hearty souls as they travel in the harshest winter weather – Syracuse, the center of the unit, is proclaimed to be the snowiest city in the U.S.

Unit 112 is home to many fine colleges and universities and travel and tourism is a highlight of the area. Visitors from all over the country come to enjoy summers in the Finger Lakes region, where many fine vineyards line the lakes and offer incredible refreshments from the fruit of the vine.

Enjoy the competition in this event and also remember that District 4 and Unit 112 are committed to Zero Tolerance to enhance every player’s bridge experience.
