The free testing is open to all individuals from the nine-county health district and neighboring Nebraska county residents. TestNebraska is a statewide COVID-19 testing initiative in partnership with state leaders and private corporations. The goal is to dramatically increase the rate of COVID-19 testing to help stem the spread of COVID-19 and determine how widespread COVID-19 is in Nebraska. There is no cost to be tested at these sites. Residents inter- ested in participating should complete the online survey at testne- braska.com/en or in Spanish at testnebraska.com/es . When the survey is completed within 6 days prior to the event, they will be given an op- tion to schedule their appointment and given a QR code which can be saved on their mobile phone or printed. They will need to show this code at the test site, along with an ID and proof of current address. Test dates are June 10th in McCook, June 11th in Imperial and June 12th in Ogallala. Testing runs from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at each location. Everyone who participates in the testing will be notified of their test re- sults directly from TestNebraska. All information collected through Test- Nebraska.com is protected by HIPAA and all applicable state and fed- eral law. Unemployment Claims on the Decline The Nebraska Department of Labor (NDOL) announced today that both new and continued unemployment claims declined last week. Spread- sheets showing regular and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) claims data are available here and will be updated every Thurs- day. There were 5,084 new regular unemployment insurance claims filed during the week ending May 30, 2020. This is a decrease of 12.19 percent from the previous week, when 5,790 initial claims were filed. The highest number of new claims filed during the pandemic was 26,539 claims during the week ending April 4. There were 1,079 new Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) claims filed last week compared to 1,229 the prior week, a decrease of 12.2 percent. Initial claims are filed by individuals to request a determination of eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits. NDOL processes initial unemployment insurance claims and, if an individual meets eligibility criteria, benefits are paid for each week of continued unemployment. Weekly certifications are required in order to claim continued weeks of unemployment and receive pay- ment. The highest counts of initial claims were in health care and social assistance (455), which decreased 23 percent from the prior week (592). Most industries had declines in initial claims from the prior week. In- creases were seen in management of companies and enterprises (162 percent), finance and insurance (11 percent), real estate and rental and leasing (9 percent) and educational services (4 percent). A Full Year of Full Moons Moonwatchers will have a special year in 2020, with 13 full moons to brighten the night sky, including the Strawberry moon Friday eve- ning . The moon gets its name from the wild strawberries that ripen at this time of year in eastern North America, according to Accuweather. The moon will appear slightly darker due to a penumbral lunar eclipse visi- ble in Australia, Asia, Europe and Africa. Not as spectacular or notice- able as a total lunar eclipse, a penumbral lunar eclipse is a rather sub- tle phenomenon that occurs when the full moon moves through the outer part of Earth’s shadow (known as the penumbra). Catch the Strawberry moon rising at around sunset looking east. Lincoln Southwest captured its third straight NSAA Cup with the release of the final points standings Wednesday. The Silver Hawk boys and girls combined for 442½ points to rank No. 1 in Class A, edging Millard North (440). Lincoln Pius X (402½) was third. The NSAA Cup awards points for success in sports and fine arts programs. Points are accumu-lated based on performance in state championship events. The seventh annual Journal Star Area Prep Sports Awards are here. In the coming days, we'll reveal nominees for each category. State championship runs in girls golf and boys cross country aided the Silver Hawks in 2019-20. The Southwest girls also were a strong contender to win Class A track before the season was canceled.Pius X finished second in the Class A girls standings behind Millard North. The other all-school division winners were Omaha Skutt (Class B), Grand Island Central Catholic (Class C) and Bancroft-Rosalie (Class D). The other boys division winners were Omaha Skutt (Class B), Aquinas (Class C) and Bancroft-Rosalie (Class D). The other girls division winners were Scottsbluff (Class B), Lincoln Lutheran (Class C) and Archbishop Bergan (Class D).

When Nebraska football players began working out on campus Monday, they were the first out of the gate in the Big Ten. As of late last week, only four of 14 Big Ten foot-ball programs had announced specific dates for when play-ers can train in campus facilities — voluntarily and not di-rected by coaches. The others are Illinois (Wednesday), Iowa (June 8) and Ohio State (June 8). If Nebraska has a competitive advantage over league opponents, that edge is secondary in Husker head coach Scott Frost’s mind behind the importance of keeping his team and community safe during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which essentially shut down college athletics in mid-March.
