‘Somehow, I knew to go to the top and drive the heck out of it.’ Q 6 The high school football season in Southwest Virginia kicks off in 6 days. KEVIN MAYS SPORTS EDITOR BRISTOL, TENN. — For a 17- year-old driver it was a learning experience at Bristol Motor Speedway Wednesday. For a veteran driver it was a case of taking advantage of a green-white-checker restart as Ryan Blaney took the win in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series UNOH 200 at BMS in a green-white-checker finish. It was the first truck series win for Blaney at Bristol. Blaney trailed two-time truck series champion Matt Crafton when Ty Dillon spun going into turn three to bring out the caution flag on lap 195 of the 200-lap race. On the restart, Blaney got a solid jump on Crafton and held on to take the dramatic win as Crafton went back in the field. “It’s a cool way to start off our triple-header weekend,” Blaney, who will run in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Friday and the NASCAR Sprint Cup event on Saturday, said. Blaney led the race early, but was black flagged for jumping a restart putting him a lap down. “Obviously, we didn’t like it, but it’s NASCAR’s jurisdiction,” said Blaney. Kyle Busch followed Blaney on the restart and finished sec- ond. “It was really good for us,” Busch said of the restart. “Somehow, I knew to go to the top and drive the heck out of it. John Hunter Nemechek fin- ished third with his best career finish on the circuit. Daniel Hemric, Brandon Jones, Erik Jones, Crafton, Tyler Reddick, Johnny Sauter and Dalton Sargeant rounded out the top 10. 17-year-old Cole Custer led the field for most of the night in the race. But an unfortunate incident for him cost him the lead and a chance for the win at the half-mile concrete oval. On lap 161, with Custer in the lead, Spencer Gallagher spun going into turn four in front of the leader. Custer went high and smacked into Gallagher’s truck. “I was already committed to the top and I had nowhere to go,” said Custer. With rain threatening to fall, and substantial damage to the front end of Custer’s truck, his team made the decision to pit. He came out of the pits in 16th place. And then, the rain started to fall, forcing NASCAR officials to drop the red flag with Crafton in the lead. Crafton battled Custer for the lead in the latter stages of the 107 laps that Custer led in the 200-lap race. But, he never led a green-flag lap when the race was stopped because of rain. He got his chance when the green flag dropped after the rain. He led until the green- white-checker restart. Caleb Holman, of Abingdon, had a solid run in the top 10 in the early laps of the race, until he was taken out of the race after an incident in turn four. Holman started eighth and ran in the top 10 throughout the early stages of the race. On lap 112, Ray Black Jr. tagged the outside wall coming out of turn four. The spin proved costly for Holman. The Abingdon driver tried to squeeze between the wall and Black’s truck. But, there was not enough room and Holman smacked the truck tearing up the left side of his truck. RTE 23 Music Festival set for Aug. 29CHARLES FONTAINESPECIAL WRITER

The second annual RTE 23 MusicFestival will take place Saturday, Aug.29, in Wise. The free event will bring aneclectic mix of regionally and nationallyknown musicians to the University ofVirginia’s College at Wise campus. Thisyear’s music lineup features TheLondon Souls, Desert Noises, WayneGraham, and this mountain. The day-long event will also feature local foodvendors and a beer garden sponsored byAbingdon’s Wolf Hills Brewery.

Wayne Graham hails from LetcherCounty, Ky. Despite the singularity of theband’s name, it is actually comprised oftwo brothers, neither of whom wouldanswer to Wayne nor Graham. Theband’s moniker is a forename adaptation

of the brothers’ grandfather’s and theirsound is as much a musical adaptation ofPine Mountain as it is Wilco’s YankeeHotel Foxtrot. The music has a sense offamiliarity, and since the band’s goal isto resonate with its audience, WayneGraham has met its own criteria andachieved it with a lush and rich sound-scape. Wayne Graham performs as afour-piece with drums, bass and guitars, and its performances are always engag-ing. The group’s most recent release istitled Rapture Drill.

The other regional band to be fea-tured at this year’s festival originatesfrom the thriving musical metropolis ofJohnson City, Tenn. Lately, the city hasseen a musical rebirth of creativity andthis mountain has been at the forefront.

Attract birds withtall sunflowers

It seems that folks planted sunflowers this year, asI am seeing more than I remember in past sum-mers.

I raised my last crop of tall sunflowers a coupleof decades ago, and as I remember it, birdsfound them right in the garden and left little to

harvest. That was the reason to plant them, of

course, but I thought I would have piles ofseeds and save money at the feed store. Ipreferred grey stripe seeds but found thatfew places carried them.

I should have appreciated the bird har-vest, because I learned that shelling headsis not easy. You can rake heads with a fork,

or rub them off into a bucket, but you’d better wear heavy gloves. If your sunflower patch is nearby you may enjoy visits from

goldfinches, grosbeaks, titmice, chickadees, even woodpeckers. Not all sunflowers produce the supply of seeds needed to feed birds,

but look for Mammoth Grey Stripe, Paul Bunyan, and Aztec Gold. Most sunflower seeds are ready from about now into early fall, but if

you stagger plantings from early spring into midsummer, you couldattract birds for quite a while.

When heads begin to droop, it’s harvest time. Leave four inches ofstalk as you cut each head. Hang them in a dry area until they dehy-drate, then place near other bird feeders, a few at a time, for bird

R.J. ROSEFIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, COEBURN

The pastor knocked on the doorand waited. A man answered, andhis expression communicated hisinconvenience of having to openthe door to a complete stranger. The pastor introduced himself.

He explained that the man’sdaughter attended Vacation BibleSchool and he extended an invita-tion for the family to attend wor-ship on Sunday morning. The man’s curt response indi-

cated that he wasn’t interested inattending any church. He startedto shut the door.“Wait!” implored the pastor,

“May I pray for you?”“No! I don’t want you praying

for me!” the man answeredgruffly.“Is there anyone who prays for

you?” the pastor asked. The man paused, his counte-

nance softened a bit. “I don’tknow,” he stammered.“So, as far as you know, not

one person on this earth is pray-ing for you?” the pastor contin-ued, “And you’re okay withthat?”

The man stood speechless fora moment. The pastor held hisgaze. Finally, the man mumbled in

softer tones, “Well, maybe itwould be alright if you’d pray forme.”The pastor placed his hand on

the man’s shoulder and theyprayed together. Before leaving, the pastor assured the man thathe, at least, will continue praying

for him; that he could go to sleepthat night with the comfort ofknowing at least one person onthe planet was praying for him.The man thanked the pastor andshut the door.A pastor friend shared that

story years ago and it has stuckwith me. It quickly occurred tome that there are many people onthis earth that nobody has evercalled out by name to the Lord. Some people have never had theblessing of knowing that at leastone person is praying for them.James instructs believers in

James 5:16 to “pray one foranother.” Prayer is not merely aritual, or a formula, but a power-ful connection with the throne ofGod. James continues, “the effec-tual fervent prayer of a righteousman availeth much.” As we oftensay today “prayer changesthings.”Who do you call out by name

to God when you pray? Have youconsidered that friends, neigh-bors, coworkers, or even familymembers may not have anyone inthis world who prays for them? That is a frightening and lonelyprospect. Maybe they have neverasked you for your prayers, butthey need your prayers just thesame. And if you are praying forthem then let them know you arepraying. That will comfort andencourage them by your care. Asa pastor, I’m always comfortedwhen someone tells me they’repraying for me.Pray for those today that may

not have anyone else in the worldpraying for them. u

treats.Do grow sunflowers even if

your only consideration is theflowers themselves. One tosearch out is a double-floweredperennial, Helianthus x multi-florus ‘Flore Pleno’ which youmay have for years if you dividethe clump every two or threeyears in fall.

The bright yellow flowers ofthis plant may remind you ofdahlias or cushion mums. Thebloom season is six weeks inAugust and September.

Sunflowers need sun to grow,of course, but are satisfied with

any average soil as long as it iswell drained.

A very interesting sunfloweris one whose roots you can eat.H. tuberosus, JerusalemArtichoke, is another perennial. It blooms prettily in summer, then can be harvested for sup-per.

It is best to harvest thesetubers every year and just savetwo or three to replant, asJerusalem Artichoke can spreadrapidly and become a pest.

Sow very tall sunflowers sothey can lean against a fence. Some grow up to 15 feet highand even if stalks are sturdy, they may bend in wind.

Alternately, be prepared tostake tall ones.

Plant ‘Teddy Bear’ sunflow-ers for the kids. They grow onlythree feet tall, are reachable forany child, and the yellow petalsfeel as soft as a favorite Teddybear.

Take advantage of a goodsunflower harvest by roastingseeds for a tasty snack. Soakseeds overnight in salted water, then drain well and roast on apan in a low-heat oven untilthey are slightly browned. u

ENGAGEMENTS u WEDDINGS u ANNIVERSARIES u BIRTHDAYS

Celebrate 60th anniversaryBeloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth

God. 1 John 4:7 KJVJoseph H. and Marie McCray Porter were married August 2, 1955. Marie’s niece and her husband, Paul

Kennedy and Jean Jordan Kennedy, married the same year on October 29, 1955.Their 60th anniversary was enjoyed with a family dinner Saturday evening; the family is a treasure from God.

They are blessed with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who are surely special. The couples are life long residents of Coeburn. They bless lives through their example of love, faith, patience,

and endurance. Their testimony of, and devotion to, our Savior, Jesus Christ, and their commitment to living ourHeavenly Father’s plan has been the pattern of their lives. Your loving family u

A library card is the coolest card, and September is Library Card Sign-upMonth.

Studies show that children who are read to in the home, and who use thelibrary, perform better in school.

Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when Wise County Public Library joinswith the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to makesure that every student has the most important school supply of all: a free librarycard. Resources at the Wise library are available to anyone who has a library card.Students can turn to the library for materials, programs, and knowledgeablelibrary staff that support academic achievement.

Today’s libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engag-ing community centers where students can collaborate using new technologies orjust relax with peers.

Our library offers access to a variety of print and digital resources, includinge-books, online homework help, online databases, digital magazines, and muchmore that can be accessed in person or online.

“Our library provides access and programs for all ages,” says BranchLibrarian, Julie Short. “For preschool age children we offer early literacy and lap

sit storytimes to encourage school readiness; for older children we supplement education with hands-on programs, and for older teens wehave information and tools to help prepare for college. There’s really something for everyone and it’s all free with a library card.”

Throughout the course of the month, the library will host a number of activities, including storytimes, author visits, book discussions, and a program for seniors, “Life Reimagined Checkup,” sponsored by AARP. Visit the library’s online calendar for a list of September pro-grams.
