Friday 15th December 2017 Term 4 Issue 19
CHRISTMAS ROADSHOW Canobolas Choir went on our annual Christmas Roadshow last week, performing concerts at
Aged Care Homes in Orange. The concerts were well-received as 13 Canobolas Music students
(Year 7-12) showcased their impressive talents. The concerts featured choir repertoire including
Bruno Mars, and Christmas carol sing-a-longs with the residents. Vocal, piano, guitar and ukulele
soloists were also featured. Ellena Hicks wowed audiences in Canobolas uniform for the last time.
Farewell Ellena.
From the
Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Members of the School Community
As the year draws to a close I would like to share with you my speech from our Annual School
Presentation Night as it sums up the achievements we have made as a school in the last 12
months.
2017 has been a year of some amazing highs and some very sad times for our school. We have
celebrated our 50th anniversary, with a very successful weekend of celebrations with a focus on
looking back on where we have come from, and also looking forward to where we would like to
go. During these celebrations we were able to recognise some long standing contributors to
the school, with the presentation of Life Membership of the P&C. The recipients were Mr Kevin
Chown, Mrs Alison Dutton and Mrs Judith Gunner, and it is wonderful to have a number of our
P&C Life members here tonight. Canobolas High School has also had to face the loss of two of
our staff members, Ron Wardrop and Toni Gibbs during the year. This has been very challenging
for our school and I sincerely must thank the whole community for the way they surrounded us
with love and support in these very difficult times.
Tonight we have the opportunity to focus on the hard work and dedication that our students, as
individuals and groups, have demonstrated in the last 12 months. The awards that are
presented are an acknowledgement of the sustained effort, time and focus that students have
given to their goals. To do this you need to be motivated and passionate, and be prepared for
knock backs and challenging times. It is all of these things that make success so sweet. To be
able to recognise so many students in such a broad range of spheres of achievement is
evidence of the wonderful programs and opportunities that exist for all students and staff.
The students who are recognised tonight would not have been able to reach these great
heights without the ongoing support of their families and extended support networks. All of us
need people who believe in us and give us encouragement and guidance, and your presence
here tonight indicates what a supportive school community we have. Thank you to the parents,
families and broader community who continually work to support our students and also the
school as a whole.
2017 has been another year of exciting changes at our school. This year we implemented
Integrated Project-based Learning for Year 7, with students completing their core studies
through ten week-long projects. The Clontarf Academy has continued to grow and become
more established within the school, and has been joined by The Girls Academy to support the
education of Aboriginal students. The Canobolas High Performance Athletes (or CHPA)
program has continued to support and extend our best athletes, with record numbers of
students participating in representative duties at a state and national level, and The Big Picture
Academy successfully completed its second year of operation and extended into the senior
school. Recently 22 of our students had the opportunity to participate in Schools Spectacular in
both the combined choir and dance ensemble, and having had the privilege of being able to
watch this performance I am convinced that it is an experience they will never forget. 2017 also
saw the employment of a Business Manager who has been invaluable in assisting with the
implementation of our new finance system, which proved to be a very big challenge for all at
the start of September this year.
This year our students continued to be involved in SRC, community service, excursions, creative
and performing arts, academic, sporting and cultural successes both inside and outside the
classroom. As is always the case, regardless of the endeavour, we always end up with the
same outcome, huge success in all that we do.
Along with recognising student achievement, it is also important that the achievements of staff
members are highlighted, This year Mrs Maxine Jackson received a Secretary’s Award for
Excellent Service, which recognises NSW Department of Education Employees who have shown
outstanding effort in improving the quality of teaching and/or learning outcomes in the NSW
Public Education Sector. This is a well deserved award for a teacher who has dedicated her
whole teaching career to the students of our school.
2018 will continue to be an exciting time at Canobolas High School. We will be extending our
new curriculum structure which will see all students in Years 7 and 8 complete their work through
projects rather than traditional subject areas. We will continue to consolidate and grow our
existing programs of STEM, CHPA, Big Picture, Clontarf and Girls Academy, always striving to
improve the learning outcomes of all students.
To the staff of Canobolas High School, teaching, support and administration, I thank you for the
ongoing dedication and professionalism you have demonstrated in 2017. I particularly would
like to recognize the school executive, who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to
support the senior leadership team, particularly those people who were willing to take up
relieving positions throughout the year as the staffing of the school required change. I look
forward to continuing to work as part of the team in 2018.
To the School Captains, Vice Captains and student leaders of 2018 I am excited to think where
you may take Canobolas High School in the next 12 months and I look forward to working with
you on this. I would also like to recognize our 2016 Captains and Vice Captains, Georgia Kiel,
Mackenzie Reith-Snare, Alicia Ilievski and Matthew Gray for the outstanding way they have
represented themselves and our school at the many official and unofficial functions in the last
12 months.
To the P&C and community partners, thank you for your ongoing support of our school. The
faith you show in what we do on a daily basis is very much appreciated. We must also
recognize the support our staff, students and programs receive from the AECG, the peak
consultative group on Aboriginal Education.
One of the sad things that occurs at the end of each school year is that people inevitably leave
our school. This can be for a variety of reasons including family relocation, promotion, or in
some cases well-earned retirement. These occasions are always bittersweet as we are losing a
member of our family, who has given of themselves to our school and our students, but at the
same time the staff member is moving into an exciting new phase of their life.
We are also saying farewell to a number of staff who have significantly contributed to our
school in a temporary capacity during 2017, and in many cases for many years before this. I
would like to acknowledge the following staff as they move onto new adventures in 2018.
Mr Pelley will be taking leave for 2018 and will take on the challenge of working in a new
school on the mid North Coast. Mr Pelley has been responsible for instigating a number of
the art installations around the school and has worked tirelessly to make our school
environment a more visually pleasant place to be.
Ms Gell, who returned to the English faculty this year is heading overseas to combine travel
with work
Mrs Saini from Maths has gained a position at Bathurst High School
Mrs Sharp has taken up a position in the ACT
Mr Novak, who has filled a number of positions for us during the year, will return in a casual
position in 2018
Ms Gottschall has been seconded to another part of the Department of Education for
another 12 months
Ms McIntosh is taking up a Deputy Principal position in Goulburn
Ms Houston (School Learning Support Officer) is moving away from Orange
Ms Stephens (School Administration Officer) will take up a 12 month secondment at Anson
Sreet School
Mrs McKenzie who came back earlier in the year and saved Science by taking up the
position of Lab Assistant AGAIN
Mr Lovecchio will be moving on to work on other projects within the community with the
youth of Orange
We wish them all of these staff well in their future endeavours.
2017 has been a challenging and exciting year for the senior leadership team at Canobolas
High School, with six staff members relieving as Deputy Principal throughout the year. I would
like to acknowledge Mr Riles, Mrs Stuart, Mr Williams, Mr Scott, Mr Skein and Ms Hutchinson who
have filled the Deputy Principal position for extended periods of time during the year, for the
dedication, professionalism and ongoing commitment they have demonstrated. We have
worked well as a team and I look forward to working with the Executive in 2018. I must also
mention and thank Mr Curran who has also relieved in the Deputy Principal role during the year.
Many people have worked tirelessly to ensure that this evening is a success. I would like to thank
all of those people who have contributed in so many different ways. In particular, I would like to
mention the three staff whose amazing work ethic and organizational skills have made tonight
possible. Could you please join me in thanking Ms Penberthy, Mrs Hurford and Ms Merchant.
I would like to wish each of our families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year.
Congratulations to all of you on such a wonderful year. I look forward to continuing our journey
together in 2018.
With my warmest regards
Kate Wootten

A HUGE thank you from Big Picture students to the Orange community.
Life is about making the most of opportunities, and that is exactly what Big Picture students did to
finish the year with a bang! Whilst Big Picture Orientation was held for new 2018 Big Picture
students, the current 2017 BP students took up the opportunity to spend a week out in the
community ‘Leaving to Learn.’ Student’s explored their passions and interests out in the Orange
and surrounding communities and upon return, confidently and enthusiastically wrote inspiring
reflections and anthropologies on the workplace challenges, new exciting learning and
exhausting yet rewarding week out in the ‘real world’ outside school.

On Wednesday 29th November the annual Canobolas High Performance Athlete Program presentation
and awards night was held. The evening celebrated the athletes’ successes and showcased some of
their experiences throughout the year. The evening and the CHPA program could not have been
possible without the support and hard work of the athletes, their families, many staff at Canobolas High
and our amazing sponsors. A huge thank you goes to Mr Justin Johnson and the PhyzX Team, Mrs Jacki
Jasprizza, Dr Melissa Skein, Krissy Lee, Amanda Hurford and the Canobolas dance program, Mrs Gemma
Carter and lastly Kate Wootten our Principal.
We would also like to thank our wonderful Home Economics staff Jen Shepherd, Merryn Lynch, Cathryn
Pankhurst and Marion Rouse and the hospitality students who put together and served a delicious meal
for us all on the night. Another thank you goes to Andrew Farley for making a spectacular cake. On
behalf of the CHPA program, thank you.

Congratulations Georgia Kiel on your university offer to Concordia
University Ann Arbor in Michigan, US next year! This is an outstanding
achievement for our school captain and softball extraordinaire. You
have made Canobolas and CHPA so proud! Can't wait to see you
absolutely knock them out of the park next year! Well done Georgia!!
3 on 3 Basketball took place on Friday 8th December to raise
money for Jack Connors and Harry Betts. The afternoon was to
help the boys on their way to the National Games in 2018. Thank
you to Mrs Dederer for organising the event and all the Canobolas
students who participated.
On Friday the 1st of December students had the opportunity to participate in wheelchair
basketball. The Wheelchair Sports NSW Roadshow came to visit our students to give them a taste
of what it’s like to play sport with a disability. The program was innovative, thought provoking
and interactive. For our senior students, it gave an insight on the consequences of taking risks in
regards to Road Safety and for our junior students it provided an understanding of disability sport
and the ‘abilities’ of people with a disability.
The students had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. They were respectful
and extremely competitive which made for a great game of basketball. It was great to observe
our students be challenged outside their comfort zones and have moments of true clarity when
accepting and realising the capacity and potential of those who have disabilities.
They couldn’t get enough of it and their manners and behaviour during the sessions were
impeccable! I was extremely proud of everyone on the day and especially the teachers who
also had a go!
Mrs Abrahams
Mrs Dederer took her Year 10 PDHPE class to the Orange
Bowling Alley for a practical lesson. All students showcased
their bowling talent. Thank You Mrs Dederer for organising
this awesome activity.
Amanda Hurford- HT
The PDHPE Faculty would like to wish all the students a very Merry Christmas and a Safe
and Happy Holiday! We look forward to seeing you in 2018!
Term 4 has been a very busy term for staff and students in the HSIE faculty, with classes
busy completing assessment tasks and many engaging class activities. For example, Mr
Edwards Year 8 classes have been learning about Threatened Habitats and how we can
address the issues facing different environments. This research ended with students
creating dioramas of their chosen environment. Year 9 classes have been looking at how
Australia contributed to both World Wars in the previous century and how that has
impacted on our lifestyle. Year 10 finished their study of Popular Culture in Australia and
how we have been impacted by overseas crazes and what impact we have had
overseas.

From the HSIE family to your family we wish you a Merry Christmas and look forward
to seeing you in the new year
