Held in conjunc-tion with the

Wa s h i n g t o n County Cheese T o u r , H a r ve s t Fe s t

features music, vendors, a silent

auction, local food, and chil-dren’s activities in a rural set-ting.

“It’s growing each year,” said organizer Laura Dunham. “Last year we had about 350 dinner guests; it’s a great way to bring the people of Salem and people from around the area together for a night.”

The festival opens at 4 p.m. with a Vendor Fair and Children’s Area offering face painting, games and cheese sampling. At 6 p.m., guests can take a stroll up the barn lane, where they’ll find the award-winning duo Al & Kathy Bain performing their traditional country, bluegrass and gospel music.

Throughout the Bain’s perfor-mance, patrons can enjoy a “farm to fork” dinner created entirely from locally grown food. Some of the offerings include slow-cooked beef and pork from Locust Grove Smokehouse, corn from Sheldon Farms, Rupert Rising Breads, salads made from produce from Slack Hollow Farm and the Courthouse Community gar-den, all topped off with ice cream from Battenkill Valley Creamery. Beer, wine, water and soda will be available for purchase.

The fun continues at 9 p.m. with a boot-scootin’ Barn Dance. Swing your partner to the country harmonies of The Bluebillies, a five-piece band from the foothills of the Adirondacks. The Bluebillies feature the singing/songwrit-ing duo of Melba Deen and Mark Guarino, along with noted musicians John Tichy, Dale Haskell and Kevin Maul.

“Last year’s dance was great,” said Dunham. “The Bluebillies were awesome.” She noted that last year was the first year the event included a barn dance, and it was very successful.

During the afternoon at 4 p.m., the annual HarvestFest Silent Auction will be ongoing until 8 p.m. The auction bene-

SALEM, NY — The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its fifth annual HarvestFest Dinner & Barn Dance on Saturday, September 8. Celebrate the end of summer with local food, music, art and activities for the entire family. All events take place at Salem Art Works on Cary Lane from 4pm to 11:00pm. A silent auction will help raise funds for the Chamber’s Crisis Fund, which helps families in the community experiencing a medical crisis.

This year’s celebration, in conjunction with the Washington County Cheese Tour, begins at 4pm with Vendor Fair and Children’s Area offering face painting, games & fun and Cheese Sampling. The fun continues when, at 6:00 pm, a stroll up the barn lane leads you to the music of the award-winning duo of Al and Kathy Bain performing their traditional country, bluegrass and gospel music. The Bains are known for their outstanding vocals and harmonies, with Kathy on upright bass and Al playing a Travis-style guitar and 5-string banjo.

Throughout the Bain’s performance enjoy the “farm to fork” dinner entirely sourced from locally grown food: slow cooked beef and pork from Locust Grove Smokehouse, corn from Sheldon’s Farms, freshly baked Rupert Rising Breads, salads made with produce from Slack Hollow Farm and the Courthouse Community Garden, and (the grand finale) ice cream from Battenkill Valley Creamery with Gardenworks’ famous berry sauce. Beer, wine, water and soda will be available for purchase.

The fun continues with a boot-scootin’ Barn Dance beginning at 9:00 pm. Swing your partner to the country harmonies of The Bluebillies, a 5-piece band from the foothills of the Adirondacks. The Bluebillies feature close-harmony country singing and songwriting duo Melba Deen and Mark Guarino joined by other local noted musicians John Tichy, Dale Haskell and Kevin Maul.

The annual HarvestFest Silent Auction begins at 4pm and benefits the Salem Area Crisis Fund, which helps local people in need with severe medical or accident-related expenses. You’ll find fabulous baskets, gift certificates from local businesses, arts and crafts. Bids close at 8:00 pm.

on Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16 at the Saratoga National Historical Park.

This two-day e n c a m p m e n t will surround visitors with the sights, smells, and

sound of mili-tary camp life from

the American Revolution. Dozens of re-enactors will por-tray American and British offi-cers, soldiers, cavalry troops, and camp followers from the Battles of Saratoga.

Visitors will have the oppor-tunity to see a cavalry charge, join in a court-martial and decide the soldier’s fate, take part in a musket drill, follow along with a scouting party, or listen to stories of the Revolutionary War experience. Feel the thunderous roar of cannons and smell the smoke of musket fire, as you immerse yourself in the wonder of camp life in earliest America.

The camps will be open on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also on Sunday, there will be a 2 p.m. Wreath Laying Ceremony by the Sons of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Revolution at Tour Road Stop 2. The public is welcome to attend the wreath laying.

The encampment event is free, but the normal entrance fee to the park of $5 per car and $3 per hiker or cyclist (good for one week entry) will be charged.

For more information, call the Visitor Center at 518-664-9821 ext. 1777 or visit www.nps.gov/sara.
