Emily Carr, 13 Ways of HappilyWinner of the New Measure Poetry Prize 2009
If ostranenieto make strangeis the mandate ofcontemporary poetry, Emily Carr has achieved this bothbrilliantly and beautifully. Kaleidoscopic in its glimmeringslivers, the life she brings us is built of charged familiarsslightly and completely changed: the sun turns on its stem;the stallion rolls in a pasture of blue ether. Although shereferences poetic antecedents from Wallace Stevens and
William Carlos Williams to Joan Retallack and Mary Ruee,
its not their voices, but their facility for invention, itself herereinvented, that keeps waking us up into a world sometimesalarming, often unsettling, and always careening until we, too, arrive delirious & shredded, sailing sideways through thegreenly ravished vowels.

Lisa Fishman, CurrentCurrent is the fourth book by Lisa Fishman, whom Michael Palmerhas called one of the most promising practitioners of Americanexploratory lyric. By means of attention to the moment (there isdailiness here) and a deep listening to the cross-currents of makingover time (there is music that hears), Current enacts a poetics of theuncanny, with no project in mind. Te book begins with a scribal act, atranscription of Barrett Brownings notes in the margins of her Greekand Hebrew Bibles, compelled by such comments as Te Holy Spiridoes not deal in synonimes to copy them out and see what happensover a decade of attending. Tis meditation opens onto other liningsenfolded in Current, such as the countering proposition (which namethe nal section), All beauty couldnt t outside a book. In this
collection, Fishman ventures further into forms of thinking in touchwith the possibilities and limitations of vision and art. Sounding themout, her voice is itself.
