PO Boxes

We are back to a waiting list of 4 with the PO Boxes. Australia Post are looking into placing 40 boxes next to the main door, and giving us back our 4 parcel boxes. Please be patient until then.

Thanks to the Shire

A letter of thanks has been sent to the Shire for the “Beware of Horse” signs and the poles and chains on the entrance. Also a phone line has been put in the hall for the Computer Club and Computer Courses.

6 Lower Coastal Associations Meeting

The second meeting of the 6 Lower Coastal Community Associations was held in August. It was held in the new Sovereign Hill Community Centre which if you have not seen, go and have a look. The Sovereign Hill Association should be congratulated on a huge community effort.

Public Liability Insurance

All in all it has been a fairly quiet month with the exception of the question of insurance for community groups using the Hall. The WCA insurance was due for renewal last June, after careful scrutiny, some of the free functions that are hosted by the WCA, ie Children’s Christmas Party, Melbourne Cup etc., were found not covered by the current insurance, so we looked to rectify this. Unfortunately we also found out that non profit groups that hire the Hall were not covered by our insurance either. To cover everyone with blanket insurance would have been astronomical, we were quoted over $6000, so groups were asked to arrange their own insurance cover, and the Shire said they would look into it for all non profit groups in the Gingin Shire who are having similar problems. The WCA then got cover with another insurance company as reported in the July MRNews. Sadly one group could not afford the rates, namely Laughter Club which subsequently disbanded because they had so few members they had no chance of raising

enough for premiums. The Shire reported in early August that they could not help so the WCA sent out letters to all groups still without insurance. Two non profit groups have juggled finances and now have cover under the new WCA policy. The WCA were told earlier that this could not happen unless the groups were affiliated to the WCA but this turns out to be wrong (or different with the new underwriters). At time of writing one sporting group has yet to get cover and the WCA have decided to give them a grant of $400 to help with the premium. They will juggle their finances for next year. It is a shame that people seem to have been misinformed with what is rumoured around the community but I hope this will help clear up any misconceptions and present the proper facts.

We are a Community Association and will try to keep you up to date on what is happening within the WCA. In reality we know we cannot keep everyone happy, but we are all doing the best we can, so come along to the WCA quarterly meetings and get your information first hand. Till next month, drive safe and better.

President of WCA

A nyone with a swimming pool should try to read the Gingin Shire Minutes from 19th July re

proposed legislation for skimmer boxes and swimming pool barriers. The minutes are on the net or there is a copy in the Art Studio. Pool Fences on rural and rural residential blocks may become law.

T he Swap Meet held on August 21st was a lovely day and there were lots of neighbours catching up

in the sunshine. The WCA would like to thank all the stall holders for supporting our fundraiser. However a special thanks goes to Glenna Mackaskill for making all the teas and coffees and her grandson Kobi who did all the washing up!!!! Thanks Kobi!

Mini Moore River News Page 3 September 2005

L ast April the WCA were asked by the Shire of Gingin if they wished to lease a portion of the

Shire Land in Woodridge to develop a shop. The WCA replied they were not. However a resident of Woodridge has applied to construct a 12x8 metre colourbond shed next to the Woodridge Art Centre, with an area for alfresco dining. The Council have invited more detailed development plans and seem willing to progress the matter further. We have phoned the prospective developer and he has said that if all goes to plan then a small deli type shop will be developed. The idea being to stock whatever people most want. However the family also want to give us a place to have a cup of coffee or a small snack, maybe even a fish and chip Friday!!! They are keen to point out they do not want to spoil fund raising activities, rather enhance the attractions.

Woodridge Social Darts

Welcome to the August darts report. On the 15th of July The Woomeras ladies team enjoyed the end of season wind up night at Guilderton

Country Club, a few of us stayed back for a game of bingo and we were happy

to get a few wins with Fiona winning a splendid raffle. Joy one of our regular Tuesday players will be moving to Lancelin to live, so will not be able to travel that far each week to play darts with us. We will be sorry to see you go Joy and wish you all the best at your new abode. The small mixed competition games that we started on Wednesday 3rd August went quite well, with a few hiccups that will get sorted out as the week’s progress. Unfortunately Guilderton were unable to get a team to join us, but Woodridge managed to juggle 4 teams of 5 players together. The names are Red Resolutes. Blue Pioneers. Yellow Torchbearers. Green Invincibles. James has taken over the task of recorder and a fine job he is making of it, and much appreciated. Applaud &Thank You to Tony Mountford who is going to donate the trophy for this competition. If any dart players wish to join the Wednesday teams which are played each fortnight ring Ron Reed 9577 1443

That ugly monster INSURANCE popped up again, but some ringing around by Phyl, Brenda & Dot got things moving with Brenda taking reign and working very hard to get it sorted. The pressure will soon be off. THANK YOU BRENDA, and then can play our darts with comfort. Congratulations To the Lancelin Ladies Team The Budgies who played at Moora on 13th & 14th of August and came in First, with one of our own dart players Margaret Alderson being par t of that team and playing very well. Well Done Ladies. Darts Results. High Scores. Dot 171 Ron & Tom140 James 137 Sheena 127 Fiona 94 High Pegs. James 79 Vern 55 David D 46

We have climbed the Eiffel Tower, Très Bon ! at 50gms lost per step that is a great effort by everyone.

Heather once again is our outright winner. (Come along to Weight Watchers and find out how Heather does it !).

We all enjoyed the talk by Jedda Richardson last month. From now on,

all of us will be reading food labels with greater care and interest.

On Wed. Sept. 14th Jedda will be talking about food portions, something we all need to keep in mind.

Remember visitors are always welcome. Come along at 10am. We would love to see you.

There is a morning tea after the talk.

Our next competition will start on Wed 31st August. The Eiffel Tower Climb went off so well it was suggested we run it again but instead of an Eiffel Tower, we will have the Statue of Liberty. These competitions really do help weight loss to be fun.

Yours in weight loss Helen Thorne

Redfield Park are in the middle up of upgrading their Community facilities, and it is all hands to the pump to seal and paint the interior walls which have now been lined.

We had a meeting on July 30th, it was nice to get newsletters from Sovereign Hill and Guilderton to hear their association news.

We have also been invited to participate in the Gingin Lily Festival on September 10th. We shall be doing the sausage sizzle to raise funds for things like the Public Liability Insurance. Our thanks to the Shire for helping us pay that bill which was over a $1000.

We have also written to the Shire to clarify points which are in the Information Package sent to potential or new residents. It was felt by one of our members that permissible stock levels on Rural residential blocks were not made clear enough. Also what water is safe to drink. We attended the meeting of the Lower Coastal Groups.

The Gingin West Cadets, went on a control burn in Redfield Park.

Being a member of the cadet unit, gives these young people a sense of pride in themselves and respect for their community. One of our longest members Dana Husten, has been promoted to junior trainer. Dana joined in 2000, when cadets started, Dana's brother Karl, who joined at the same time is now a firefighter. For more information about joining cadets,

phone Trevor 9577 1218 or Jean 9577 1211.

O ne of our new members, Michael Polette 13, might be small, but he makes up for it with

enthusiasm, it's hard to get yellows to fit Michael, as even the smallest is too big, but he's happy with that (pictured).

Chief Fire Officer Andrew Reeks, Firemen Steve Quick and Helen Sutherland helped by Anne Stroud, Connor Sutherland and great scissor work performed by Bryn.

Recycling Centre Woodridge Run by Gingin West Fire Brigade.

The group pictured got the papers tied up and then Jean and Greg Grimsey, Trevor Morris, Trevor Button, John and Anne loaded the truck from Perth. Please make sure you tie your papers securely, it saves a lot of volunteer time. Also please do not leave cans in plastic bags. If the canvas bags are full just take them down, put them in the shed and put up new ones, it only takes a few minutes but saves a lot of back breaking work for the firemen who have to clean up the mess. BUT HEY THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT

STABLE FLY ACTION GROUP

The Stable Fly Action Group held its second meeting of the Interim Committee in Gingin on Wednesday 17 August.

Among the items on the agenda were confirmation of the Constitution and Rules of Association; Reports from members who had attended recent meetings where discussion was held on the stable fly problem, including a meeting at Gillingarra regarding the health and environmental aspects, and fly breeding potential, of biosolids being spread on land; publicity; and expressions of interest for membership of The Stable Fly Action Group after its Incorporation.

It has been scientifically established that the stable fly’s principal breeding ground is raw poultry manure.

The four month “open season” during which raw poultry manure may be sold, supplied, transported, stored or used ends on 31 August. From 1 September it is an offence under the Health Act of Western Australia (Poultry Manure Regulations 2001) legislation.

The SFAG requests members of the community to report to the Shire of Gingin any incidences of persons contravening the Poultry Manure Regulations. Jo Ottaway
