    Your Plate?

    Te U.S. Department o Agriculture

has been trying to help us eat healthier

    or a very long time.

Back in 1943, we had he Basic

Seven -- seven categories o ood we

needed to eat on a daily basis. Serving

    sizes werent included.

In 1956, the USDA switched to Te

Basic Four, and in 1979 to the Hassle-Free Guide to a Better Diet. It added

a new ood category with ats, sweets

and alcohol. In 1984, we got the Food

Wheel: A Pattern or Daily Food Choic-

es. Tis one included serving sizes.

Eight years later, in 1992, the Food

Guide Pyramid came along with those

tiny pictures o ood. In 2005 we got the

    MyPyramid Food Guidance System,

which was supposed to be a simplied

    pyramid.

Now, in an efort to keep us all eating

    correctly, we have MyPl

MIDDLEOWN National ParkRanger Shannon Moeck led tourgroup members on the very rstguided historical Middletownwalking tour Saturday morning,June 18.Te tour is only one o the many

tours being ofered in the Win-chester-Frederick County areathis summer season thanks to aproject being undertaken by theWinchester-Frederick CountyCivil War Sesquicentennial Com-mittee, and coordinated by theWinchester-Frederick CountyConvention and Visitors Center.

Eager participants began assem-bling in ront o the old potatochip actory about 15 minutesbeore the scheduled start time o11 a.m., just of o First and Mainstreets in downtown Middle-town.his particular tour is being

ofered at this time on the thirdSaturdays o each month up toOctober.Moeck, who developed the

historical Middletown tour orinterested visitors, was also theNational Park Ranger that guidedtour participants around andthroughout the Cedar Creek Bat-

tleeld only a ew weeks beore. In this particular part o the

Shenandoah Valley, said Moeck,People saw war coming.

Like the other tours reviewedso ar in the Frederick County

Reports series o guided histori-cal tours, the Middletown walk-ing tour attracted and entertainedvisitors o all ages.

Te inquisitive tour participantsollowed closely behind RangerMoeck, who shared her knowl-edge o Middletowns history aswell as the history behind thecorrelating military engagementsthat took place at the southernend o Middletown, at the CedarCreek Battleeld and Belle GrovePlantation.Moeck provided the tour par-

ticipants with acts, quotes andhistorical accounts that occurred

within the town that sits juston the outskirts o a battleeldwhere more than 9000 Unionand Conederate soldiers mettheir untimely ates in a mattero only around 24 hours, nearlya century and a hal ago.She has accrued such a wealth

o knowledge throughout herstudies in history courses locallyat Lord Fairax CC and her owndiligent personal research.Moeck claimed that it was criti-

cal to be able to integrate somehistory about at least one o thebattles o Cedar Creek into the his-torical Middletown walking tour

because the military engagementswere o course the major shapinginuences or this quaint Virginiatown during the most inuential

w a rat any point in our nationshistory.I want to give you a sense o

what it elt like to live in Middle-town during the Civil War, shesaid.Tis walking tour was similar to

the aorementioned Cedar Creekdriving tour in the act that it was

provided ree o charge to inter-ested participants.Tis luxury was made possible

due to the tireless eforts o the

work-ers o the National ParkService and local volunteerssacricing their time in order tomake sure the invaluable histori-cal landmarks o the area remainpreserved or many years tocome.hroughout the two Middle-

town/Cedar Creek tours, groupparticipants have continuouslyexpressed their appreciation orthe intimate view into an areaentrenched in so much importanthistory.Unlike some more widely-known

Civil War tourist locations likeGettysburg, Middletowns toursallow the participants to treadthe historical streets, which wereonce used exclusively by horsesand wagons, in a way that theymight walk down the streets otheir own hometown.Instead o horde mobs brandish-

Earl Zook is living proo thatage cant dictate limitations. At age 88, he is in the processo hiking the Appalachian rail,a challenge or anyone. Zooktook on the challenge or a noblecause. Trough this endeavor, heis helping to raise money or theAmerican Institute or CancerResearch.Zook, a resident o Stephens City,

began hiking the Appalachianrail last year. Unortunately, hehad to take a reprieve rom hikingdue to an ulcer. Tis year, he iscontinuing his eforts to reach hisgoal. So ar, including the distancehe was able to hike last year, hehas hiked rom the Pennsylvanialine down to Tornton Gap nearFront Royal, which is 400-500miles o the 2,172 mile trail. Hesays the view rom Skyline Driveis antastic.Zook hopes to reach the south-

ern point o the Appalachian rail, which is in Spring Mountain, inGeorgia, by September. Next year,he hopes to tackle the northernstretch rom the PA line andcontinue upward until he reachesMaine. Zooks ultimate goal is tonish the Appalachian rail at Mt.

Katahdin, Maine by the time he is90 years old.Zook became interested in hiking

the Appalachian rail as a way toraise money or cancer research. He has lost two brother-in-laws tocancer and one sister-in-law.Te purpose o my hike is to

help people with cancer, he said.Zook is an active member o the

Winchester Kiwanis Club. He saysthat every year, club members goto Camp Fantastic in Front Royaland serve breakast to childrenwho have cancer who are betweenthe ages o seven and 17.Seeing the children with cancer

really pulls at your heart strings, said Zook.im Anderson, a ellow Kiwan-

ian, is Zooks hiking mentor.Anderson hiked the entire Appa-lachian rail about ten years ago.Prior to his hiking the trail Zookhad never hiked beore. He [Anderson] has helped me

nd out how to go about it, hesaid.Zook is systematic in the way he

is undertaking the 2,172 mile trail.

He lays out the trail in our to vemile sections, which is the most hetravels in one day. He does it one

step at a time.Te kind o maps he uses can be

purchased at Harpers Ferry, WV.Zook makes up index cards owhere he is going each day.He does not hike on the week-

ends. On Sundays, he goes tochurch and occasionally he sleepsin. Zook never hikes alone.Tis year, ellow Kiwanis Club

members are hiking with him.Zook doesnt stray ar rom thetrail. I there is an attraction closeto the trail, he will go see it, but hesays the trail is long enough as itis and he doesnt wish to add milesto it. Zook chose Bald Eagle ashis trail name.Prior to going out on the trail,

Zook tries to pack light or thehike. Instead o packing peanutbutter and crackers separately,he buys them already packagedtogether.Teres no use in getting old i

you dont get smarter, he said.At 10 a.m., Zook takes out his

pre-packaged morning snack ocookies and peanut butter crack-ers. At lunchtime, he eats cannedchicken. In the aternoon, heenjoys a couple o candy bars. Hesays that he eats the chocolate

whether its melted or not. Henoted that chocolate is a goodenergy builder. He also takes somecandy along or the days hike. When out on the trail, he likes to

take high energy ood thats lightin weight. I Zook doesnt sleep inhis Waldor Astoria Suitehistent he may sleep in a shelteralong the trail. I a hotel is notnear the trail and he doesnt sleepin his tent, he sleeps wherever hehas to. He says he has even sleptwith mice.Starting this June, Zook plans to

hike the rest o the summer. Dur-ing the week o May 23, he was

dog sitting or his son, so he tookthat week of rom hiking. July 1-8,Zook will be at Emory & HenryCollege in southwestern Virginia. He will be hiking in the SmokyMountains with a group rom thecollege. Both he and the studentswill be transported to and rom thecollege to the trail.Raised a Mennonite, Zook has

Earl Zook stands at the entrance to the Appalachian

carried the work ethic he learned as achild over into his career as a salesman. He didnt let having only an eighth gradeeducation stop him rom going to thetop in his line o work. Zook worked orElectrolux or 20 years. He started out asa door-to-door salesman and retired as adivision manager.Ater retiring rom Electrolux, he went

O course, he didnt stayretired or long. en years ago, Zookstarted selling promotional items suchas pens, key chains and letter openers. He says that i he cant get i t or you, thenyou dont need it. Taking the MysteryOut of Credit Scores

FICO, short for Fair Isaac Corpora-tion, was founded in 1956 by a math-ematician and an engineer who wereinterested in the analysis of numbers including credit scores. Their workgave creditors a means of predict-ing which customers are more or lesslikely to default on loans. Your scorecan pre-determine how youre treatedby creditors:

    1. A high credit scores equates to alower anticipated rate of default.

    2. Creditors raise or lower the inter-est rates they offer you based on your

likely risk of default.3. The higher your credit score, the

better the deal youll get on interestand the more money youre likely tosave over time.

The front screen of the MyFico.comwebsite gives a perfect example ofpotential savings: A 100-point differ-ence in your FICO score could meanover $40,000 extra in interest pay-ments over the life of a 30-year mort-gage on a $300,000 home loan.

    Kurt Busch Closing onPoints Leader

For Kurt Busch, the 2011season has been a processo ebb and ow ... and ebbagain. Or vice-versa.

Te 32-year-old Busch, the elder o racing broth-ers, began the season un-ocially with a victory inthe Budweiser Shootout, ollowed by nishes o th,eighth, ninth and seventh inthe Sprint Cup seas ons rstour point races. Ten hewent into a slump, withnishes o 17th, 16th, 10th,18th, 22nd, 27th and 14th.

Ater the seasons rstour races, Busch stood atthe top o the point stand-

ings. Seven races later,he had allen to eighth. But since then, the graphhas turned upward again.Busch has nished ourth, ninth and second in thethree most-recent races, liting him back up to sixthin the standings, only 35points behind leader CarlEdwards.

Buschs disgruntle-ment was obvious duringthe rough spots. Changeswere made in manage-ment at Penske Racing, atleast partly in response toBuschs complaints, manyo which were heard by ansover scanners during races.

Now, once again, KurtBusch is a picture o con-tentment, with results toback it up.

Edwards ran into enginetrouble at Michigan, almost

erasing what had been acomortable edge in points.Buschs runner-up nish at

Pocono Raceway was oneahead o younger brotherKyle.

When the point leaderhas problems, everybodys

just chomping at the bit, licking their lips, going,Wow, look at this , Im rightback in this. When yourehaving good runs like weare, my little brother andme, just plugging away, that helps you eel moresolid when you get to themonth o August, ater youget through the Brickyard, making that summer run tothe Chase, said Kurt.

Given recent peror-mances, that summer runto the Chase seems prom-ising or both Busch broth-ers.

Kurt Busch won the Cupchampionship in 2004, therst year the Chase ormat

was implemented. At thetime, he drove a Ford orJack Roush. Now he drives

one o two Dodges eldedby Roger Penske.

Right now its all aboutconsistency, said Kurt. Idlike to break through andget a win just to help useel more condent in ourChase position.

When the point leaderhas trouble, everybody ben-ets rom that.
