Coordinate local KiwiSport initiatives for primary and secondary school aged children. Work with targeted primary schools and secondary schools to increase sport opportunities and increase participation Work with Energize and other partners to increase sport opportunities and increase participation in Primary Schools Work with both the Thames Valley Primary School Sports Association and the Thames Valley Secondary School Sports Association to increase sport opportunities and participation

Have-a-go sessions have been offered to a number of schools in the Hauraki district. This included introducing skills and drills, basic rules, competition and provision of resources for students at the following centres:

Golf modules district wide – 337 students Rugby modules district wide – 730 students Bowls module at Paeroa College – 16 students Football modules at Hauraki Plains College – 39 students Hockey Modules district wide – 302 students Rugby League at Paeroa and Plains – 331 students

For the period, 1755 primary and secondary school students have participated in KiwiSport initiatives in the Hauraki district Energize highlights: PAEROA Leadership training, triathlon training, Dad’s and Daughter’s cooking project at Paeroa Central, Mt Karangahake climb, Maori traditional games especially Ki o Rahi with Paeroa Central winning the regional tournament, Bikewise initiatives on the Rail Trail – cycling to school and triathlons PLAINS: Support for school camps, Fitness assessments/diaries, traditional Maori games with Waitakaruru and Kerepehi schools together, four food groups nutrition sessions WAIHI: Bikewise (Bike Hype) sessions in schools and then culminating in using the Rail Trail for triathlons and cycling to school, Maori traditional games Supported the following events: Thames Valley Secondary Schools Swimming Thames Valley Secondary Schools Athletics Thames Valley Primary Schools Rippa Rugby (Tournaments in Ngatea and Waihi and finals in Paeroa) Thames Valley Primary Schools Swimming Thames Valley Primary Schools Athletics

Involvement in or working with providers to increase participation in local events Club development project focussed on increasing participation and/or membership

Hauraki Plains College Moto-X Ohinemuri Primary Schools cluster Athletics Attended the Thames Valley Secondary Schools Sport Association meeting x2 Attended the Thames Valley Primary Schools Sport Association meeting x2 Bikewise – Nervous Nellies and Neddies workshops held over three consecutive weeks culminating in a ride on the Rail Trail. 14 attendees – mostly non cyclists with an excellent outcome of all intending to continue riding. The goal for them all is to regularly ride on the Hauraki Rail Trail Assistance and support for X-Terra Challenge; Goldfest Activities - Pit Rim Adventure and the Train & Trek Support for the establishment of the Hauraki GymSport Club. Club is now an incorporated society and is working with other GymSport clubs in the region Support for the Ngatea Athletics Club. An Athletics Have a Go day was held in October prior to the start of the new season. The District Coordinator and SportsForce Development Officer attended a number of club nights to support where needed. The club has just completed a re-building season and are to start early for the 2013/14 season with keen volunteers.

Deliver parent education sessions related to foundation and fundamental skills Raise awareness of the importance of fundamental skills through KB, KT, KP distribution Provide support for community activity options / groups in Paeroa, Ngatea and Waihi. Increasing numbers in targeted groups and developing new opportunities to meet needs Active and well participants more active from our support.

Workshops were held to give parents the opportunity to learn more about caring for their young children focusing on toddler movement. Paeroa - One parent workshop Waihi - One parent workshop. There were eleven attendees at the parent workshops. Two workshops were cancelled due to lack of registrations. Resource distribution has included: 26 Active Movement resources 81 KiwiBaby resources 21 KiwiToddler resources 19 KiwiPreschooler resources These resources continue to be free to all babies born in the Waikato region Regular visits are made to community exercise groups district wide, supporting leaders, providing any training and resources where needed. Regular numbers have steadily increased in the Paeroa and Waihi walking groups. 22 Green Prescription referrals have been made during the period. Clients are provided with regular support by phone and/or face-to-face meetings. These clients are encouraged to attend local Sport Waikato supported classes as part of their transition back into regular exercise.

Develop ongoing professional development to teachers and coaches for primary and secondary schools Work with primary and secondary schools to facilitate, develop and implement school physical activity, nutrition and /or school sports plans Provide opportunities for secondary school leadership through local initiatives Provide development or training for : Officials Administrators Coaches Local community projects to improve the delivery of local sport.

Professional development is provided to Hauraki schools mostly through Project Energize. The following trainings took place: Maori Traditional Games; Swim Safe Team Energize work with local primary schools to develop individualised annual plans for activity and nutrition which are implemented in each school with their support. Boards of Trustees for each school endorse the plans. Secondary school students received training to assist with local and KiwiSport projects e.g. Rippa Rugby Tournaments and Thames Valley Hockey Big Days Out A beginner coaching course was held for rugby league in conjunction with the Paeroa Rugby League Carnival Day - 33 parents/caregivers trained A three hour generic smart coach course was delivered in Ngatea with 21 attendees Ngatea Domain Users Group. Follow up of the Hauraki Plains Club Self Review Forum was held and attended by ten clubs from around Hauraki Plains. The follow up focussed on mission/vision, image and relationships. A SportsGround workshop is scheduled for July as the next session Support for local Ngatea rugby, netball and hockey who have now formally united under the banner of the Ngatea Rugby and Sports Club.

Local community recreation projects

Continued communication and support for Sport ‘N’ Action Waihi Development Officer and multi sport project. Coordinated the annual Thames Valley Primary Schools Big Day Out. Worked alongside the Thames Valley Hockey Association, KiwiSport and SportsForce to host the have-a-go days. 21 schools took part and 1130 students over the three days. Midlands players ran the days with the assistance of TV Hockey Lead agency for the annual ECHO Walking Festival. 29 programmed walks and three cycles were included in the 2013 event. Although the event was slightly affected by the weather this year there continues to be good participation and satisfaction with the event

Fortnightly columns in the Hauraki Herald Monthly columns in the Plains Profile Weekly radio slots on Coromandel FM District webpage kept up to date with Sport Waikato events Monthly window displays in the offices of Hauraki District Council (Ngatea), Sport ‘N’ Action Waihi and Positive Paeroa A number of Sport Waikato Programme Managers continue to assist individual sporting organisations as needed.

Recognising volunteers and club contribution to grass roots sport and celebrating local sport achievements at district sports awards

Hauraki/Thames-Coromandel District Sports Awards held in Ngatea on November 27th 2012 with 71 nominees and 240 attendees. Guest presenters were Matt Stanley (London Olympics – swimming), Emily Naylor (Co-Captain of the Black Sticks, veteran of four Olympic campaigns) and Phillipa Gray (Winner of gold, silver and bronze medals at London Paralympics). Martin van de Wetering and Sue Reid were selected as finalists for the Brian Perry Waikato Regional Sports Awards.
