President’s Report

Our season of 2016/2017 was a season that produced improved performances for many and consolidation both on the field and off, laying a strong foundation for us to move forward with confidence for success. The Club has turned around a large financial deficit by implementing effective and efficient governance practices, assisted by a proactive Board, rolling up their sleeves to ensure our Club remains sustainable into the future. However, the cost of managing a Premier Cricket Club to an expected elite Club level continues to escalate. The ongoing challenge for all Premier clubs is to be able to provide adequately for individual expectations in areas of opportunity and development translating to consistent performances.

Welcome to our new directors who have now served their first 12 months with the Board. To Cliff Wright, Brendan Lavery and David McClean – thank you for jumping straight in with passion to make a positive contribution. It has also been excellent to further build the club’s connections with the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association. Executive members from the MPCA in Stephen Morone and Craig Letch have accepted our invitation to participate with our board, which has certainly enhanced the positive flow of communication. With all but one team challenging for finals and a 2nd XI Grand Final appearance, the playing group is continually improving and maturing into what is expected to challenge the competition Club Championship and finals in all grades consistently. I acknowledge the performance of the 2nd XI led by Sam Wiese, who achieved a Grand Final berth deservedly after being the most consistent team across the season, with many players having a break out season. However, to be denied a Premiership was heartbreaking for all involved. The retirement from Premier Cricket of Luke Walker leaves a big gap for us. His Premier Cricket career is an outstanding one. He leaves us with our thanks for his service and his considerable loyalty to FPCC. Also retiring from Premier cricket, after very serviceable careers, well done to Chris McCormick and Sam Wiese. On behalf of FPCC I thank them for their long-term service, both as talented cricketers and importantly passionate Clubmen. Our Club had strong representation at all levels of elite cricket, from International, State, BBL, underage State and Pathway. Congratulations to all for being great ambassadors for FPCC at all these levels.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 4 Annual Report 2016/2017

The major project of upgrading our practice wicket precinct is finally underway, following an uncontrollable 18-month delay from Frankston City Council. Once completed, the upgrade maintains our facility as the benchmark of the Premier Competition. The demand from our region for increased access of our training facilities continues to grow and as has been the case for decades, we have always endeavoured to facilitate where practical, access in a coordinated manner. Cricket Victoria recently acknowledged the Club for its Community Engagement, suggesting we do it better than most Premier Clubs. I extend our appreciation to Head Coach Adrian Johnstone for his dedicated commitment over the past two seasons and wish him well for his future coaching endeavours. The sponsors who continue to be loyal and support our Club are a most valuable resource. In recent years they have had little business return for their investment. We all need to acknowledge, appreciate and support their businesses in return for their support of us, this has to be a priority going forward. Once again, I highlight our appreciation to our primary partner Buildsafe Building Insurances, as well as our premier partners Frankston RSL and Dunsford Financial. The Club is growing the fifth team being our volunteers. From Board members to casual involvement, thank you for those who have “put your hands up” to assist and minimise the workload for the few. I emphasise that to continue to be a sustainable club we need to build on our core base of current volunteers and I encourage family and friends to get involved for even greater satisfaction, understanding and enjoyment of our club. To be an effective club in the future we need to grow our cash reserves through increased sponsorship, total engagement and support from a better cross section of participants, growing a better connect with on field and off field therefore developing a greater inclusiveness and passion that can enhance our Club environment.

Dennis Prendergast

President

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 5 Annual Report 2016/2017

General Manager’s Report

It is with pleasure that I submit Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club’s Annual Report for Season 2016/2017. The process of compiling the Annual Report (my seventh report) provides a great opportunity to assemble a record of the achievements and records of the club from the recent season. Personally, I have completed my sixth year in this role. The shared arrangement has worked well, with my wife Jo undertaking a lot of the day-to-day administrative tasks and myself completing the practical onsite aspects of the position.

I must commend the valuable contribution from our President, Dennis Prendergast. He puts so much time into our club, managing many key relationships with our important stakeholders. We look forward to the upcoming construction of our new training facility, which has been delayed for 18 months due to a number of factors out of our control. The facility will be innovative in the fact there will be a capacity to have run-ups at both ends of the practice wickets. This will in effect double the use of the practice wickets, which currently struggle to meet the training needs of the club, pathway squads and other cricket groups who are invited to use the only turf training facility in the region. By being fully enclosed with roof netting, it will also provide a much needed safety measure that will remove the risk of parking in the nearby car park or playing in the nearby playground. The final plans have been completed, with the Tender process about to commence, with construction scheduled at this stage to be completed by September 2017.

Administration

As in previous years, Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia provided funds and assistance to enable the Club to manage its administration responsibilities in accordance with Cricket Victoria’s Criteria Assessment for all Premier Cricket Clubs. Cricket Victoria’s and Cricket Australia’s support is greatly appreciated.

Coaching

Adrian Johnstone continued in his role as Director of Coaching. Adrian was supported by a quality group of coaches including Johan Vorster, Anthony McQuire, Darren Berry, Tim Spear, Darren Groves, David McClean, Mark O’Sullivan and Dean Gunawardana. Following a comprehensive end of season review, Adrian was not offered a new role at the club. We sincerely thank Adrian for his passion and dedication that he brought to the club in his two year period as senior coach. Following an extensive process involving multiple highly credentialed candidates, the club is excited to have secured the services of Keith Jansz as the new Director of Coaching, considering his extensive experience and skill set. Keith comes to the club with a Level 3 National Coaching Accreditation and is currently the coach of Victorian Country Women’s Cricket Team and the Victorian Indigenous Women’s Cricket Team. With significant familiarity of the club & region already, Keith returns to FPCC after earlier guiding the club to its maiden 1st XI Grand Final appearance in 2002/03. Jansz has recently managed high performance roles in major colleges in Sri Lanka, following roles as coach of Melbourne Cricket Club (Women’s Division), Springvale South in the DDCA and Hawthorn – Monash University in 2011/12 to 2012/13.

A 1st XI cricketer with Prahran between 1980/81 to 1986/87, Jansz also has held other significant high performance roles to boost his experience and skill set, including a State selector and Specialist Coach of Vic Spirit, Coach of Victorian Women U17’s and U19’s, Chairman of Selectors for Victorian Women U15’s & U17’s and State Selector of Victorian Men’s U19’s. We look forward to working closely with Keith once again.

Playing

It was terrific to again record two days of “Searing Heat” this season, especially against Camberwell Magpies who were the eventual Club Champions for Season 2016/17. It is hard to remember in recent years (except for 2015/16!), another time our sides won all four matches in a round more than once in a season! This season our four sides defeated local rivals Casey-South Melbourne in Round 9 and ladder leaders Camberwell Magpies in Round 14. Congratulations to all award winners from the Presentation Night, in particular to Matthew Gapes who won his first Prendergast Club Champion award after a very consistent break out season in the 1st XI. An incredibly tight vote count for the Thompson Medal in Season 2016/17, where it was fitting for veteran Luke Walker to claim the medal for the first time in his long outstanding career, sharing the medal with young promising fast bowler Jack Lavery. The vision from match days using our HD Video Camera obtained from our Spirit of Cricket award prizemoney has been taken to another level, with the club receiving considerable social media exposure as a result of the hours of vision editing I was able to complete to compile regular highlights packages. The 1sts had a very competitive season with wins against St Kilda, Casey, Camberwell and Melbourne along with extremely close results against Essendon, Kingston, Northcote, Ringwood and Melbourne University where things just did not quite fall our way in those matches. Matthew Gapes (684 runs), Luke Walker (569) and Liam Tonkin (424) had very good seasons with the bat, with Ben Ashkenazi (21 wickets), Jackson Mockett (20) and Jack Benbow (15) the best with the ball. The 3rds just fell short of the finals, after another solid season under the leadership of Aaron McIlroy.

Quarter Final Summary:

The 2nds won their Quarter Final comfortably in the end, but they had to fight back from a slow start with the bat. Sam Wiese and Rob Salerni anchored the innings with a crucial middle order partnership to setup a very competitive target to defend on their home soil. Nick Boland and Jake Wood then crushed the Camberwell Magpies top order and it was hard for the visitors to recover their innings from the difficult start.

The 4ths played at a neutral venue hosted by Kingston Hawthorn against a team ranked second on the ladder in Fitzroy Doncaster. In what were very difficult conditions where the dry pitch played difficult and offered plenty of spin, the first innings total of 162 from FPCC was low but still very competitive in those conditions. After dismissing the best three opposition batsmen before stumps on Day 1, our bowlers continued to take regular wickets on Day 2 to dismiss the highly fancied opposition for just 100. Leon Davis proved the difference with the ball, showing great courage to play through injury to capture a five-wicket haul.

Semi Final Summary:

After being sent into bat first, FPCC got away to a flying start on their home pitch at Butler Oval, with Gordon Waterfall and Rob Salerni ticking the score over to be an excellent 2/113 at lunch. However, this is where the complexion of the match changed, with FPCC losing 8/46 to be dismissed for an under par 10/165. With enough assistance in the pitch to keep our fast bowlers interested, the Heat attack bowled the entire innings with extreme patience and discipline. Dandenong had a no risk policy, and refused aggressive stroke play to carefully protect their wicket. The fast bowlers applied considerable pressure

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 7 Annual Report 2016/2017

before stumps on Day 1, to take three crucial top order wickets by the close of play. Both sides carefully managed their way to lunch on Day 2, but regular wickets to the home side gave them the advantage. To relieve the tension and stress levels of the supporters upstairs, Jake Wood bowled with pace and aggression to quickly wrap up the innings after lunch to dismiss Dandenong for 106, who ended up losing 8/45 following their bright start. With a deficit of 59 runs, Dandenong conceded defeat to send Frankston Peninsula into the big dance! The season of the 4th XI ended at Central Reserve, Glen Waverley after they came up against a very inform top team on their home ground. For the developing side to win a final and reach the final four is a fantastic effort, under the terrific leadership of Simon Draycott. In the semi final, FPCC started well with Jack Lavery claiming early wickets to have the home team struggling at 3/26 and 5/77. Some considerable middle order partnerships boosted the Monash total to 7/265 from their maximum allotted 90 overs. With only 75 overs remaining, the runs had to flow early to give FPCC a chance in the run chase. Alex Hands and Steve Dagys tried to push the run scoring, but regular wickets ended their season.

Grand Final Summary:

To sum up the Grand Final, I refer to my Facebook post from the quietness of the full but silent Casey Fields change rooms: “Devastating. Heart breaking. So close. Tears. Emotion. Team mates forever. Thanks to all who came to support us at Casey Fields this weekend. The support was huge, and certainly noticed by the players. Thank you.” The team played a magnificent finals series. They lifted every time they were called to. They had a huge amount of support along side them at the ground riding every delivery. It was so stressful for those on the sidelines who had no way of impacting the result. Everyone was so proud of the team, but as per heartbreak this club has experienced in Grand Final’s of the past, it returned in the cruelest way. After batting valiantly to get the side back into the game, we looked so close to hanging on for the draw, which would be enough. However, as quick as a flash, the Premiership glory was ripped away, just six balls short of success. Congratulations to all players who played their role during the season to help see the 2nd XI reach the Grand Final, and to these players who represented the club in the Grand Final: Sam Wiese (c), Nick Mann, Gordon Waterfall, Nathan Harford, Robbie Salerni, Aidan Wheeler, Nick Boland, Jake Wood, Ben Frith, Billy Humphrey, Glyn Trueman, Tom La Brooy (12th man), Kiefer Peries (hand injury from Semi Final), Tom Ewing (back injury from Quarter Final). Here is what Leader Newspapers wrote about the dramatic match: Essendon claimed a dramatic Second XI premiership with five balls to spare after an epic Premier Cricket final against Frankston Peninsula. The Heat, by virtue of finishing three points ahead of Essendon on the ladder, needed only to bat out day two at Casey Fields to be crowned premiers. At 8-237 with three overs remaining, Frankston Peninsula appeared certain to seal a memorable flag after a classic decider. Seamer Sam Crea set the scene for a nail biting climax by removing Heat captain Sam Wiese for 75 with 15 balls remaining.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 8 Annual Report 2016/2017

Six balls stood between Frankston Peninsula and glory when Crea delivered the knockout blow, trapping Billy Humphrey lbw for 33 on the first delivery of the last over. The Heat could have drawn the game and won the premiership, Essendon had to take the 10 wickets. It took until the last over, the first ball of the 99th over. Crea toiled through 31.1 overs, finishing with a match-winning haul of 7-57. Teenager Connor Rutland backed up his unbeaten 82 from Saturday with 2-52, while Nishal Perera’s four-hour knock of 106 was pivotal after Essendon had been 3-28 on day one. While Perera’s innings changed the game’s momentum, Rutland’s unbroken 61-run stand with No. 10 James Ford proved the tipping point. Rutland clubbed 82 from 107 balls, while Ford added a valuable 20 not out to lift Essendon to 8-272. The Heat batted valiantly in pursuit of the target, with Nathan Harford (54), Wiese and Humphrey ensuring the game ended in thrilling circumstances.

Great day at Heat in the Kitchen Luncheon

Thanks to all who attended our Heat in the Kitchen Luncheon on AFL Grand Final Day eve. Even though there was no cricket to watch on the fine and sunny day due to the early call from Cricket Victoria to postpone Round 1, it still turned out to be a very fun and enjoyable day, thanks to the very entertaining hour from guest speaker Darren Berry. It was great to see so many familiar faces and local cricket personalities attend the day, as well as 40 current players who filled the room and bonded after losing the chance to take the field that day.

Congratulations to Tim Spear

Well done to our bowling development coach Tim Spear (left) who, representing Victoria, won the Australian Over 60’s Championships in Perth!

WNCL – ACT Meteors vs Queensland Fire

It was a terrific occasion for the club to host a WNCL match in November between ACT Meteors and Queensland Fire. It was a very competitive match in which ACT got the points after a very entertaining innings from Katie Mack who received the player of the match award (right). Both sides and Cricket Victoria were extremely complimentary of the facilities and hospitality. Hopefully we will be able to host further high profile matches going forward.

Vale Karen Voelkl

Our sincere condolences from all at FPCC went to the Voelkl family including Ray, Tristan, Kierran and Jye following the passing of Karen in October following a very brave battle with illness. Karen served the club for many years as a dedicated volunteer and board director, and was certainly a very valuable contributor. The funeral service for Karen was held at Rosebud Funeral Services.

Board of Management

Finally, recognition should be provided to the hard working FPCC Board of Management which included throughout the year: Dennis Prendergast (President), Cliff Wright (Vice President), James Keenan (Vice President), Glenn Davey (Treasurer), Ivan Ashkenazi (Secretary), Kevin Johnson, Brendan Lavery, David McClean, Chris McCormick and Glyn Trueman. It was extremely positive to have Stephen Morone and Craig Letch join the board to represent the MPCA Executive Committee.

It is with sadness that I mention a sincere farewell to Luke Walker, Chris McCormick and Sam Wiese. I have had a very close connection to these great clubmen during our time at FPCC, and they will be tremendously missed. I wish them all the best for their next chapter.

Glenn Davey

Co-General Manager

Captain’s Report

To look at the final ladder position of the 1st XI at the end of the season would be a simplistic view of how the team played throughout the season. Whilst we did finish 17th out of 18 teams, and that can not be ignored, the strides that the team made in gaining more respect across the competition was noted. Of the 4 victories that the team had during the season, 3 of those came against teams that contested the finals, and 1 of which was an outright victory at Camberwell who ended the season on top of the ladder. The form of the team in T20 cricket was much improved from the prior season where the team was largely uncompetitive. We registered a victory, 2 heartbreaking losses on the last ball of the match (in consecutive days) and encountered a 1 man wrecking crew at Prahran. The response from the team after that day was most positive with a victory the next day.

As captain the response and instructions I asked of the team, the respect I was shown as captain and the willingness to do whatever was asked show that Frankston Peninsula has a lot of young cricketers who want the club to progress forward and are prepared to go on the journey. Numerous players took a step forward with some individual highlights. Matt Gapes had a fine season after being thrust into the unfamiliar role of an opening batsman. He registered his maiden Premier 1st XI century vs Geelong in Round 15. We also saw a taste of things to come with scores of 90+ from Jaime Brohier, Liam Tonkin and Gordon Waterfall. With the ball we saw a courageous effort from Jake Wood at Camberwell with match figures of 8/73. Jackson Mockett, Jack Benbow and Nick Boland also recorded 4 wickets in an innings during the season. The team would not have been able to take the field without the constant support of so many helpers throughout the season. Whilst I can’t name everyone, the weekly support of Ivan Ashkenazi (team manager) and Wayne Ross (scorer) went above and beyond what was required, and we are very grateful. Chris McCormick due to work opportunities has decided to end his career at Frankston Peninsula. I spoke previously about Chris’s willingness to adapt to situations and to get himself into the 1st XI on a consistent basis. He has had stints as a bowler, all rounder, top order bat, power hitter in T20 cricket…you name, he’s had a go at it. Not only do we lose a fantastic cricketer, but we lose an even better person and clubman. Best of luck to you and your family Chris. I see plenty of light at the end of the tunnel for the current group of FPCC cricketers. With names like Symons, Mockett, Boland, Gapes, Waterfall, Tonkin, Salerni, Ashkenazi, Humphrey etc all providing glimpses of their capabilities at 1st XI level, they are all capable of being consistent cricketers as the next generation and capable of higher honours. It won’t be handed to you, it takes hard work……..which leads me to….. In closing, the hard work that coach Adrian Johnstone has provided the club the last two seasons won’t go unnoticed. I don’t think I have come across a more passionate leader in my time. Everything that Adrian did was to try and improve Frankston Peninsula and give the players every opportunity to succeed. Adrian forever wore his heart on his sleeve…..and I always found myself calming him down in times of disappointment or jubilation! The boys deeply thank you “Ox” for your dedication and commitment in your time as coach.

Luke Walker

1st XI Captain

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 11 Annual Report 2016/2017

Finance Report

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club realized an audited net profit of $17,272 for Season 2016/2017 compared to a net loss of ($23,610) in Season 2015/2016. The financial information is based on accrual accounting, is exclusive of GST, and includes non-cash transactions such as depreciation and adjustments. This is an incredible outcome to turn around the net result by $40,882 in only 12 months. The club was forced into a very challenging position financially last season, and after hard work and a lot of support from our members, the club is now back to a neutral starting point to launch from. The major contributing factors of the result are provided in the following report.

Income: Cricket Victoria & Cricket Australia Again the main funding source came through distributions from Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia, which slightly increased. Also provided was a VRGF sponsorship grant, and a discretionary grant from Cricket Victoria to recognize the considerable work undertaken by the club in the areas of junior development and community engagement. Included in “Other Distributions” is new funding provided by the Australian Cricketers Association for their Premier Cricket Coaching Program. Cricket Victoria assisted in reimbursing costs incurred to host Country Week matches and the 2nd XI Quarter Final and Semi Final, along with reimbursing the costs to host Victorian Under 17 trial matches and the Women’s National Cricket League match in November. In respect to the loan with Cricket Victoria for our contribution to the electronic scoreboard, the full seven repayments ($35,000 combined) have now been made to clear the debt. Bar, Canteen and Selection Night Meals. Bar Sales continued to slowly decrease, with only two external functions held. In order to eliminate the considerable cost to operate the canteen, food on match days was sold from volunteers from the bar. These sales were absorbed into the bar sales, to further highlight the drop in bar sales. Rolls, cakes and cordial continued to be provided for player afternoon teas free of charge, thanks to many volunteer preparation hours. The Selection Night Meals were prepared by a large roster of volunteers, making a profit for the club of $2,456 compared to the profit of $3,518 last season, which is still a handy result for the club. Membership We again thank the playing group considerably for their strong support of their club through the current membership structure, first implemented at the 2009 AGM. The players and members also participated in our TMA Fundraising campaign, which helped raise $8,477 profit for the club. I encourage supporters to strongly consider becoming a social member to further support your Club financially. Sales of social memberships almost doubled in 2016/17, which was a pleasing sign. Social A very successful Trivia Night was organized by Glyn and Lauren Trueman to raise $3,091 for the club. The club also was able to secure a last minute slot to operate a Bunnings BBQ, which generated a profit of $975 thanks to the volunteer support who helped operate the BBQ on Australia Day. It was great to again host another Heat in the Kitchen event to launch the season, with Darren Berry an entertaining guest speaker. Sponsorship We are grateful to continue to receive wonderful support from our sponsors: Buildsafe Building Insurances (Phil Graf), Frankston RSL (Rob Morrison), Dunsford Financial (Mark Dunsford), Core Gym (Joe Russo), National Australia Bank Seaford (Jacinta Broatch), Kookaburra Sport (Nathan Pilon), Saxon Sports Frankston (Chris Hall), The Pantry House (Glen Elmi), AOK Window Cleaning (Rob Bennett), Brendan Lavery Plumbing (Brendan Lavery), Paringa Estate Winery (Lindsay McCall), Girl Friday VA Solutions (Jo Davey), Craig Symons, and Graham Quarries (Chris Hutchinson).

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 12 Annual Report 2016/2017

Thank you to Mark Dunsford, Craig Mann and Kevin Johnson who play a key role on behalf of the club in generating and maintaining positive relationships with new and existing sponsors. All members are encouraged to support our sponsors with your business, to help reward their investment.

Expenditure: Facility In 2015/16, the club experienced a very costly period in regards to items requiring repair with some scoreboard shutters, the cool room compressor and the large Butler Oval covers all requiring unbudgeted replacement. This season, the maintenance costs returned to levels that are more manageable. Grounds Ground rental fees payable to the Frankston City Council for the A.H. Butler Oval and Eastern Oval increased slightly from $9,962 to $10,461. The club remains significantly well supported by the Council and its staff. Merchandise $8,186 worth of current merchandise purchases and new cricket balls remain on hand as at 30 April 2017. Last season saw the playing list remain quite stable, which decreased the demand for new merchandise causing the fall of clothing sales and corresponding expenditure. Playing To manage budget affordability, the club was unable to invest in securing an overseas player. Payments to coaching staff increased by $11,000 which was caused in the majority by payments to Darren Berry that were fully funded by the ACA Premier Cricket Program grant. Indoor practice, facility hire and cricket equipment costs (such as match balls, training balls, first aid items, ice and training aides) combined to $16,775 to outline the significant investment by the club in playing resources. Travel and Accommodation costs were not incurred this season due to pre-season practice matches to the country being abandoned due to rain, along with the Round 5 Country Bush Bash that did not proceed due to wet conditions. GST The club fell behind in its GST payments due to the deficit position encounted during the last two years. The Australian Taxation Office have been very accommodating, and agreed to a 10-month payment plan for the $10,802 owed from the Business Activity Statements. This will be paid monthly between July 2017 and April 2018. Summary: As discussed above, the club has worked very hard to secure a position of financial stability. Revenue has been increased in various methods such as ACA coaching grant, social events, raffle fundraising events, along with maintaining important revenue streams such as sponsorship and player memberships. In turn, the club has made a deliberate effort to reduce expenditure such as canteen wages and overseas players, along with being assisted with the reduction in maintenance costs, to help drive a surplus position. This is such an encouraging position to be in compared to the dire situation 12 months earlier. However, this is now just a neutral base to launch from. A return to deficit will see the club return to an overdraft position, which will limit the investment opportunities back into the club. The Board will continue to conservatively manage the finances, and look at revenue growth opportunities to allow further cricket investment and to also ease the ongoing financial pressure.

Club Champion – Matthew Gapes

After a break out season with the bat, where he took leadership of the top order batting in the 1st XI, Matthew Gapes is a much deserving recipient of his first Prendergast Club Championship. Matthew had an outstandingly consistent year, compiling 684 runs including his maiden 1st XI century of 102* against Geelong in Round 15. He also scored three further half centuries, to finish on an excellent season average of 40.24.

Thompson Medal – Jack Lavery & Luke Walker

An incredibly tight vote count for the Thompson Medal in Season 2016/17, with the Top 10 players only separated by 4 votes. It was fitting for veteran Luke Walker to claim the medal for the first time in his long outstanding career, sharing the medal with young promising fast bowler Jack Lavery who dominated with the new ball in the 4th XI this season. It was extra special for Luke and Jack to share the medal after Luke mentored Jack closely during his period away from the game with a serious injury.

Club Awards – Season 2016/2017

Donald Cameron Memorial Under 21 Award:

- Jackson Mockett

Jackson received recognition for his talented progression, after receiving selection for Victorian Country U/17’s and U/19’s three years in a row. Jackson has recently just received selection into the Victorian Futures League winter training squad, which is further great recognition.

Wills Best Club Person Award

- Wayne Ross

Wayne was a very worthy recipient of the Best Clubman Award, which recognizes his lengthy service to the club and cricket in the South East Country Region. After serving the Region in multiple administrative roles for the last two decades, Wayne announced Season 2016/17 will be his last with the Region. Fittingly, his final match with the South East Country Sharks was the Under 18’s State Final at the MCG. Wayne was an extremely loyal and dedicated General Manager for FPCC for 11 seasons, before now assisting the club in the valuable role of 1st XI scorer, which he plans to continue to do.

Victorian Bushrangers

Massive congratulations to Jon Holland who won the Bill Lawry Medal for the best Victorian Shield Player this season, to back up receiving the Dean Jones Medal for the best Victorian One Day Player last season in 2015/2016. Also, congratulations to Jon Holland, Scott Boland and the remainder of the Victorian side for securing a historic third straight Sheffield Shield title in March. After winning at a “home” venue in Hobart in 2014/15, then away at Glenelg in 2015/16, they completed the three-peat with another “home” victory in Alice Springs this season.

1st XI Debutants – 2016/2017

It was an exciting moment in October as Brodie Symons received Cap # 145 after making his 1st XI debut at Melbourne University. He becomes the first Premier Cricket father son player for FPCC, with his father Craig making his 1st XI debut in 1994/95 to be Cap # 22. Originally from Mornington C.C. and The Peninsula School, Brodie top scored on debut with 60 runs. It was great to welcome Cameron Gannon to the 1st XI for Round 13 against Carlton. Cameron is a tall all-rounder, who has been in the Queensland Bulls squad since his First Class debut in 2010. He played BBL with Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Renegades before moving to Melbourne Stars for this season’s BBL 06. Cameron bowled well with the new ball in an economical spell, before top scoring in the middle order with 44 off 43 balls.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 50 Annual Report 2016/2017

At the FPCC Presentation Night on 31 March 2017, Luke Walker announced his surprise decision made earlier in that week that he will be retiring from Premier Cricket to focus on a new phase of his life. After almost two decades of dedicated service to the club, Luke and his wife Sarah will be able to move away from the intense commitment that Premier Cricket requires, and focus on increased family time with daughter Samantha and new born son Mason. Luke is a club man through and through, and will be a tremendous loss to the club. However after all he has done for FPCC, he has earned the right to make a decision to depart Premier Cricket on his terms. The list of his career achievements is huge, as briefly summarized on the previous page. We sincerely thank Luke for his service to the club and look forward to welcoming him back to the club in the future. Below is an article outlining Luke’s move to Sub District cricket, with some very respectful quotes about Luke.

“Malvern has sealed a three-year deal with FPCC batsman Luke Walker”

Paul Amy, Stonnington Leader, April 4, 2017 A few weeks ago Malvern stalwart David “Doc’’ Priddle said the club was after a “big fish’’. The Roosters reeled him in yesterday. Star Frankston Peninsula batsman Luke Walker, who last week announced his retirement from Premier Cricket, has agreed to a three-year deal with Malvern and will take over the captaincy from Ash Streker. Walker, a leading goal umpire in the AFL, has played the most First XI matches for Frankston Peninsula (229) and also hit the most runs. His tally of 6974 was made at an average of 36.13 and included 45 half-centuries and six centuries. The left-hander’s 2016-17 haul of 569 at 40.6 brought him his eighth First XI batting award. Walker’s tallest aggregate came in 2003-04, when he cracked 896 runs at 40.7. He also passed the 800-run mark in 2006-7 (867 at 45.6). Walker had two stints as captain of the Heat, won two club championship awards and appeared in its 2002-03 and 2010-11 grand final teams. Priddle said this morning there was a “great sense of excitement’’ about the appointment. He said Walker had an exceptional record in Premier Cricket and was an “impressive individual who will provide the leadership and role modelling that the First XI captain role demands’’. “He is a genuinely good bloke who will fit in at Malvern seamlessly. Luke is seeking a new challenge in his cricketing life and was impressed with what the future holds at Malvern and wanted to be a part of it,’’ Priddle said. “The highest praise I can give Luke is that, while doing our due diligence, all our sources said categorically that Luke is one of the best blokes — and batsmen — in Premier Cricket. That was good enough for us. It is indeed a fabulous appointment.’’

It is with sadness that we announce the decision of Sam Wiese to step away from Premier Cricket. Sam has been an extremely loyal and dedicated clubman, culminating in his highly professional leadership of the 2nd XI last season which took the side just six deliveries from a much deserved Premiership. Sam has had a highly credentialed career with FPCC as shown by the records above, with the 5th most 1st XI matches, the 6th most overall matches, the 8th most 1st XI runs and 4th most overall runs for FPCC. We wish you well Sam and hope to see you back at the club.

FPCC Board Director: 2011 to 2017

Congratulations to Chris McCormick for a terrific all round career with FPCC, after announcing he will be relocating with wife Claire to Sydney for an exciting employment opportunity. Chris joined the club in 2005/06 and has since played 192 matches. He has been a terrific all round cricketer, adapting to the various formats of the game to overall make 3139 runs and take 224 wickets for the club. His highest score was his 2nd XI century of 104. Fittingly, his highest 1st XI score of 70 came in his final innings against Melbourne. Chris has bowled very economically with his medium pace, to collect 82 wickets in the 1st XI and 124 in the 2nd XI. A career highlight for Chris was being named Club Champion in 2015/16 after scoring 388 runs to go with 15 wickets in a career best 1st XI season. A valuable asset to the club, Chris has also served as a Director on the FPCC Committee for the last six seasons, assisting in social events, fundraisers and as player liaison to the board. We wish Chris and Claire all the best for the move to Sydney, and look forward to welcoming you back in the future!

South East Country Sharks

In an unprecedented season, the South East Country Sharks, representing the South East Country Region in Cricket Victoria’s Pathways Program had very successful campaigns, with the Under 16’s and Under 18’s both participating in the State Final. From September until the end of December, FPCC provided training facilities for each of the Squads to utilize, and closely supported all three teams through the Championships, including hosting six matches at Jubilee Park. Captain Tom Ewing led the way with the bat for the Under 18’s, battling with a broken finger to still score 266 runs for the carnival at an average of 88.67. Tom Ewing was awarded joint player of the championships, and was presented with his medal following the Grand Final held at the MCG. Ryan Hammel was the highest run scorer for the South East Country Sharks Under 16’s, compiling 202 runs at an average of 33.67. The side made a competitive 10/214 at the Grand Final in Geelong, but it wasn’t enough for South East Bayside who won with six wickets in hand.

Searing Heat vs Camberwell Magpies:

The club was buzzing after a momentous Round of “Searing Heat” against Camberwell Magpies in

Round 14. Not only did every side record victory against the club sitting on top of the Club

Championship, the 1st XI also recorded a stunning upset outright win at Camberwell in what was a

fighting bottom vs top performance. A reward for a lot of hard work, demonstrating the talent and

capabilities of the squad.

With four wins in Round 14, there had to be many contributors, including:

• Gordon Waterfall digging in on a tough wicket on Day 1 in the 1sts to make 53 over 3 hours.

• Jake Wood and Jackson Mockett combining for 3 wickets each on Day 1 in the 1sts to help

secure first innings points, taking Camberwell from 2/82 to 8/112.

• Ben Ashkenazi (below right) taking 4 key wickets in the 1sts on Day 2 to get through the

talented top order of Camberwell.

• Jake Wood backing up his first innings with a huge 15 over spell into the wind to clean up the

middle order on Day 2 in the 1sts with 5/30.

• Chris McCormick 60, Nathan Harford 60, Rob Salerni 41 and Nick Boland 38 all building the

total in the 2nds on Day 1.

• The 2nds bowling group of Nick Boland, Ben Frith, Aidan Wheeler, Glyn Trueman, Billy

Humphrey, Chris McCormick and Sam Wiese all bowling with patience and discipline all day to

take 10 wickets in 84 overs at a very economical rate.

• Mitch Drummond, Jamin Barron-Toop and Aaron McIlroy all claiming 3 wickets on Day 1 in the

3rds to keep Camberwell to a low score of 124.

• Steven Dagys 73, Sam Sturt 23 and Emmal Mayadunne 21 seeing the 3rds home safely and

comfortably in the run chase on Day 2.

• Jack Lavery bowling with pace and aggression to take 4/62 off 21 in the 4ths on Day 1.

• Alex Hands 71 and Patrick Skelly 66 adding 107 for the opening partnership to get the 4ths off

to a great start in their high run chase.

• Lachlan Curtis smacking 69* in the final overs to see the 4ths to victory with 10 balls to spare.

So many great individual

performances, combining

with four great team

efforts, to earn our second

Searing Heat of the season!

Well done to all involved!

“Never-give-in attitude secures memorable win for

Frankston Peninsula over Camberwell”

Simon McEvoy, Frankston Standard Leader, January 23, 2017 Frankston Peninsula has pulled off one of the best wins in its 25-year history, stunning Camberwell Magpies on Saturday. The Heat, on the bottom, beat the ladder-leading Magpies outright in the biggest upset of the season. It capped a memorable day for the Heat, with all four of its teams celebrating wins – meaning it was “a day of Searing Heat’’. Acting Heat captain Luke Walker rated the boil over win at Camberwell in “the top two’’ of his long career. “The guys, from the first week to this week, had a never-give-in attitude,’’ he said. The Magpies resumed at 8-127 on Saturday chasing the Heat’s 148. Matt Whittaker fell for a duck and Simon Hill added just one run to his overnight score of 70 before he was run out by Matt Gapes and the Heat banked first-innings points and a 20-run lead. Magpie left-armer Will Walker (5-42) then ran through the Heat’s batting line up, the visitors all out for 130 setting Camberwell 151 runs, in 41 overs, for a reverse outright. The Magpies crashed from 3-40 to 9-74 courtesy of Ben Ashkenazi (4-33) and Jake Wood (5-30). Whittaker (7 off 42 balls) and debutant Chris Bridle (0* off 21) stuck around but Ashkenazi (below) delivered the Heat maximum points when he bowled Whittaker with an over to go to. The dramatic upset lifted the Heat off the bottom of the table. Walker poured praise on Wood, who snared the first five-for in his career. “Jake Wood bowled up hill and into the wind and he bowled 17 overs in a row,’’ he said. “For him to pick up his first five wicket haul at Premier level was certainly well deserved. He toiled hard for us on day one and on day two and without him it wouldn’t have happened.’’ Walker said the win was one to remember. “Given we were on the bottom of the ladder, after being beaten convincingly the game before, to come out against the top team and beat them outright at home, it doesn’t get much better than that. So it’s certainly in my top couple (of wins) I’d say,’’ he said. Frankston Peninsula host Geelong, which will have Aaron Finch, at AH Butler Oval on Saturday. The Heat’s seconds remain on top of the ladder.

“Rousing win over finalists Melbourne”

Simon McEvoy, Frankston Standard Leader, March 5, 2017 Frankston Peninsula coach Adrian Johnstone says the Heat can play finals next season after they scored a rousing win over Melbourne in the last round on Saturday. At Butler Oval, Frankston dismissed Melbourne for 235, safely defending its 5/326, to climb off the bottom of the ladder and avoid the wooden spoon. “It was a weird season,’’ Johnstone said. “We knocked over some top sides convincingly – an outright against Camberwell and beating Melbourne as well – but we had six losses by 10 runs or less. “(It was) another development year. The expectations are that we will hit the top eight next season. It’s a three-year plan. We’ve certainly played better cricket than last year. The pleasing thing (was) we had one ton in the club last year (but) we had seven this year. We’ve definitely made in-roads that way.’’ On Saturday, Jackson Mockett (4-47) early and Jack Benbow (4-77) late did most of the damage with the ball. “Melbourne probably came with that attitude that they’ve got this one in the bag already and our boys just weren’t going to let it happen,’’ Johnstone said. Johnstone said Mockett was the pick of the bowlers - “He broke through early…and he just bashed the wicket and was all over them’’, while Benbow “just bowled great areas’’. The game was the last in Frankston colours for long-serving all-rounder Chris McCormick, who is relocating to Sydney for work. He played 192 game for the Heat. Frankston Peninsula’s seconds and fourths will play finals, with the seconds to host a quarter final. (Right - Jackson Mockett sends one down to Melbourne champion Andrew Kent)
