Franklin Middle School Mission To guide and develop life-long learners who use knowledge and skills to positively impact our diverse world. The Learner Profile for January was open-minded. Open-minded: We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as, the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience. As an IB World School, many classes re- flected on what it means to truly be opened-minded and how we can learn so much more with an open mindset. The Learner Profile for February was caring. Caring: We show empathy, compassion and re- spect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us. Many classes reflected on what it means to truly be caring, how important it is to show compassion for others and taking care of each other. Our Learner Profile for March is Thinkers. At the semester, your child’s performance was based off of four criteria for each subject and was synthe- sized into one overall IB level of achievement (1-7) and semester grade. This grade is a reflection of a con- tinuum of their learning based on IB rubrics. If you have any questions about the IB grading practice, please be sure to contact your child’s teacher. Our assessment policy emphasizes the importance of the learning process and academic growth. We stress the importance of formative work so students can receive feedback on how their learning is pro- gressing prior to a summative assessment. IB rubrics help students assess their own current level of under- standing and what they can do to increase their demonstration of learning. For more information on our assessment policy, it can be found on our school’s website or here Assessment Policy. We are busy during our IB Wednesday time wrapping up the first semester service and action projects. Students in sixth and seventh grade are beginning to brainstorm ideas of service and action for the second semester. SAVE the DATE! Community Project Exhibition night for all 8th grade students is May 7th from 5:30 - 6:30 pm in our Bistro. Students have been working very hard on their community project and look forward to sharing their learning. More details about our amazing exhibition to come! The decision to close or delay school for inclement weather is always difficult. The District’s first priority is student and staff safety. Due to the severe inclement weather in January and February, the District will need to make changes to the school cal-endar and school day to make up instructional minutes.

The April 5th early release day has been cancelled, students will attend school for the entire day.

Starting Monday, February 25th, the District added five (5) minutes to the beginning of the day and ten (10) minutes to the end of the day for the remainder of the school year. The new adjusted school day schedule for Franklin is shown below.

Congratulation to DESAHNI THAO for being recognized as January’s student of the month! Our Language and Litera-cy department and the rest of the Franklin family would like to applaud Deshani for being an amazing young lady who works with all people and is open minded to not judge others for any reason. Deshani is a caring soul who goes out of her way to respect others and offer assistance whenever she can. She is the picture of an ideal IB student. She is an avid reader and growing writer who is always trying to improve her skills. Deshani has shown high aca-demic standards through her own hard work and determi-nation. Her teachers feel fortunate to have Deshani as a student. Keep up the great work! #BobcatPride Please help us recognize CARRIE BARDWELL as our Janu-ary Parent of the Month! Carrie actively supports our school through her service as a PTO member and secre-tary. She has been a part of our PTO for three years. Carrie is also Franklin’s parent representative on the Su-

perintendent’s Parent Advisory Committee. Thank you, Carrie, for your support! We appreciate YOU!

JANUARY STUDENT and PARENT OF THE MONTH

Congratulation to GRACE HAMMOND for being recognized as February’s student of the month! Our PE department and the rest of our Franklin staff would like to applaud Grace for giving her best effort every day and at everything she does. Grace always has a smile on her face and willingly helps out whenever asked. Keep up the great work, Grace! #BobcatPride Please help us recognize our February Parent of the Month, MARY PAT BAR-RETT! Mary Pat is very support of her children’s education and of our school. Her warm presence is felt when she stops by to check in, have lunch with her kids, or serves as a sub in our building. She is often bringing in donations for student in-centives and to lift our teachers up with a gift of appreciation. Mary Pat also sup-ports our teachers during conferences by bringing in food or treats. She is a con-stant help with student activities, especially boys basketball and West Futures by helping with study tables after school and concessions during tournaments. Thanks for all you do, Mary Pat!! We appreciate YOU!

FEBRUARY STUDENT and PARENT OF THE MONTH

Franklin Middle School’s Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) is a welcoming, judgement free zone that is open to all! We have an amazing group this year, including many allies interested in making sure all students feel supported and contribute to a positive climate at Franklin. This year we have twelve 8th grade students that chose to focus their IB Community Project on educating about, and supporting, the LGBTQ+ community. One of the 8th grade groups has shared a glossary of terms with Franklin staff, as well as, designed and delivered safe zone signs to any interested staff members to have up in their classroom or office. A second group has put together a presentation that they have been sharing with 6th and 7th grade classes. A third group made baked goods that they sold for donations during an event at NWTC with a speaker that is a part of, and actively supports, LGBTQ+. They raised $230 dollars that they will present to Pride Alive for their 2019 sum-mer event. We are so proud of our wonderful, caring students! If you have any questions about our GSA, you can contact Melinda Wolke and Shana Zimmerman, co-advisors for Franklin’s GSA.

Looking for an exciting opportunity for you and your daughter/little sister/niece that is both fun and educational? The Green Bay Area Public School District is holding three workshops in April for girls and a special adult that explore non-typical female careers.

Do It Yourself Lawn Art - In this workshop girls and adults will use basic welding to create and design a decorative lawn art project. They will also learn about the manufacturing industry and the many career opportunities available.

Do It Yourself Raised Garden Bed - New opportunity this year to learn how to construct a raised garden bed. Female students and adults will learn basic construction concepts such as learning how to measure, mark out and cut out wood using a power miter saw, drill holes, and use a cordless drill.

Video Game Design - Girls and adults will learn how computer science and technology are used in the Video Game Design industry. In Game Design, students learn basic video game coding concepts by making different types of games, including racing, platform, launching and more. They will also learn about the career opportunities available within the Information Technology (IT) field.

Dear Families:

With the winter season quickly approaching, I wanted to share some important reminders about school closings and delays.

Notifications:

In order to ensure families are notified of a school closing or delay, the District will send out emails, automated phone calls and text messages to parents/guardians using our School Messenger notification system. If you have not "opted-in" to re-ceive text messages, text "opt-in" or "subscribe" to 67587, if we have your cell phone number on record in Infinite Campus.

The District will also notify the media, post the delay or closure on the District's/schools' websites, Facebook and Twitter.

When schools close early due to inclement weather, the District will notify the media at least one hour before the first stu-dents are released. Parents are also encouraged to check the District's website, Facebook and Twitter accounts for up-to-date information.

Early Dismissal:

When the District determines the early dismissal time, Franklin Middle School will dismiss students at approximately 12:40 PM.

For early dismissal days due to inclement weather, it is important that families have a plan in place. Students will not be dis-missed prior to the assigned time unless parents/guardians pick them up.

For parents/guardians who are working, it is necessary for your children and the school to have instructions regarding what they should do and where they will go, if you will be staying at work.

Finally, I want to remind families that parents/guardians can always determine if they would prefer their students remain home from school on inclement weather days, should the decision be made to not close schools. In addition, should you decide that you would prefer to pick your child up on an inclement weather day, if school will not be dismissed early, you may do that as well. In either case, please be sure to notify the school office. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline Hauser

Principal / Head of School

Atentamente,

Jacqueline Hauser
