    The Virginia Companys charter granted by King James I created the boundaries of the 34th and

    41st parallels running from sea to sea west and northwest. They did not know the distance

    from sea to sea which lead to problems of the western border later on.

    saving John Smiths life when the

    Powhatan Indians had captured

    him. This friendship began a period

    of good relations called the peace

    1612- Tobacco became Virginias gold when John Rolfediscovered a new way to cure it. Smoking became the rage

    in England, and the Virginia Company prospered by

    exporting this cash crop.

    In 1614, John Rolfe married Princess Pocahontas, who had become a Christian, taken the

    name Lady Rebecca, and wore English clothes. The Virginia company brought John Rolfe

    and Princess Pocahontas to London to promote a Virginia lottery and introduce Pocahontas

    to King James I. in 1617, Pocahontas dies and the Peace of Pocahontas ends.

    House of Burgesses unites for the first time in

    1619 at Jamestown, Virginia. 5 generations

    later in 1776 leaders from Virginia assembly,

    now accustomed to political freedom, would

    lead the colonies to independence from

    England.

    The Headright System allowed private ownership of land.

    Each pre-1616 settler received 100 acres of free land while

    each thereafter received 50 acres, plus another 50 for everyperson he brought from England.

    Ninety adventurous women arrived in 1610, sent by the

    Virginia company as wives for the Jamestown settlers.

    Each groom paid 120 pounds of tobacco for his brides

    passage.

    1619- Ironically, at the time the Virginia Company extended political and economical freedom

    to the colony, two groups not included in these freedoms were brought to Virginia.

    20 kidnapped Africans were sold to Jamestown

    settlers by the captain of a Dutch ship. As

    indentured servants, they probably were freed

    after several years. But by the 1600s black

    servitude turned into black slavery.

    In 1622 the Powhatan Indians massacred 347

    Virginians at noontime. It was a surprise attack! The

    colonists retaliation, along with disease, took its toll:

    by 1700 only about 1,00 of the 9,000 Powhatan

    Indians survived.

    1624-King James 1-did not like the representative government and used the massacre

    and the Virginia Companys financial issues as a reason to revoke the Companys

    charter and make Virginia a royal colony. Then he got rid of the House of Burgesses.1639- King Charles 1 reinstated House of Burgesses.

    Sir William Berkeley served asone of the first royallyappointed governor ofVirginia (1642) Althoughan able ruler, he didntuse any liberty.

    In western Virginia, Governor Berkeley,

    an autocratic ruler, levied high taxes,

    while denying frontiersmen a voice in

    the government and protection from

    the attacking Indians. The settlers

    rebelled against him in the 1670s.

    In 1676, Nathaniel Bacon, a farmer, lead a rebellion againstGovernor Berkeley, making him leave Jamestown, and

    burning the town. Bacon suddenly died from an illness andwith that, so did the rebellion. King Charles II replacedBerkeley, making the colony run harmoniously again.
