General Board of Higher Education and Ministry Scholarships Awarded to Franklin District Students

Congratulations to Hanna Pratt of Harrisville UMC, and to Timothy Byham of Galloway UMC for receiving 2013 Conference Merit Award Scholarships through the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry!

Hanna is a student at Messiah College and will attend Wesley Seminary in the fall. Timothy is a student at United Methodist related West Virginia Wesleyan College.

NEW-Plugged In-Making the Connection between Social Media & Christianity

To help more congregations effectively use social media, the Western PA Conference offers Plugged In: Making the Connection between Social Media and Christianity. The two-hour class at the United Methodist Center in Cranberry Twp. is designed for those who don’t have social media accounts or are new to the “scene." It will include the how-to’s of Facebook and Twitter and offer hands-on instruction in how to set up accounts for a church or ministry. A limited number of computers will be available for those unable to bring their own laptop or tablet.

Participants may choose one of two sessions: Thursday, March 6 or Tuesday, March 11. Both run 2-4 p.m.

Empowering Young People to Answer God's Call 2014 Culture of the Call Church Award

The Foundation for Evangelism is seeking nominations for the 2014 Culture of the Call Church Award. This annual award, recognizes one local United Methodist congregation that encourages the next generation of leaders with a passion for evangelism to enter full-time Christian service. The Foundation for Evangelism awards this honor to highlight the outstanding work being done in the local church where young persons, age 35 and under, are encouraged, supported, and nurtured as part of the culture of that congregation.

2014 Youth Opportunity: Epworth Center in SE Ohio-Announcing three scholarships for camper fees for SOWER Work Mission, summer 2014. Theme: “Rebuild. Restore. Renew.” Two scholarships available for youth ages 12-17, on their first mission trip through the First-Steps program. One scholarship is for a full week SOWER participant ages 12-24, on his/her first mission trip. More information: www.epworthcenter.org or 740.484.4705. Hearing Aids Needed: Jan Ogden, who will lead a Holy Land Volunteers in Mission trip that begins April 27, has issued a call for hearing aids in any condition. She’ll take them to Atfaluna, a place for the deaf and hearing impaired in Gaza. They can refurbish old hearing aids or use them for parts. NEW-Bill Graham Library Bus Tour – Charlotte, NC May 1-3, 2014

This bus tour is solely for the purpose of worship, fellowship, and the opportunity to connect with the people

and places that have been so important to our spiritual heritage and is not for profit. Join us as we travel: Day 1- Guided tour of the Anna Jarvis Birthplace Museum, Grafton, WV. Dinner at Golden Corral (included) Mooresville, NC. Day 2- Samaritan’s Purse Distribution Warehouse, Billy Graham Library History and Heritage Tour, lunch (included) at the Graham Brother’s Dairy Bar. Visit Hendrick Motorsports Race Shops and Museum and time permitting, The Wells Fargo History Museum in Charlotte. Dinner (included) will be at The King’s Kitchen, a ministry operating as a not for profit restaurant to raise funds to feed the poor in Charlotte. The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry is sponsoring a UMC Clergywomen Leadership Seminar.

This will provide an opportunity for networking among clergywomen and women leaders of the church throughout the connection. Advocacy, empowerment, and sensitizing the church about racial-ethnic women’s leadership are important components of this seminar. The participants will learn about core competencies of coaching, and there will be an opportunity for group coaching around staffing issues. Run for the Woods – 5K Run and Fun Walk

Saturday, May 10, 2014 This event is for the entire family, at the same time supporting a Christian camp that has changed lives for countless children and adults. The Run for the Woods, a 5K run, 5K fun walk, and youth and toddler runs, will take place at and benefit the ministry of scenic Wesley Woods Camp, Grand Valley, PA.

All children and youth of camp age who participate in a 5k event or the toddler/youth fun run will have their name put into a drawing for a full camp scholarship to the Wesley Woods summer camp of their choice

the United Methodist Church Award. With this honor, the Foundation celebrates a United Methodist

clergy or lay person whose personal ministry in evangelism is recognized throughout the denomination.

The 2014 Distinguished Evangelist of the United Methodist Church will join others such as Adam Hamilton,

Shane Bishop, Jorge Acevedo, Charles Anderson, and Mark Beeson as exceptional United Methodist

leaders who have a passion for evangelism.

Annual selection of the Distinguished Evangelist Award recipient is based upon simple principles:

1. A United Methodist clergy or layperson whose ministry is recognized for helping all persons

experience God's transforming love through Jesus Christ;

2. An individual devoted in mind and heart to evangelism in the spirit of John Wesley;

3. An individual whose personal life reflects the quality and attractiveness of the Christian religion at its best.

The Cabinet and the Board Of Ordained Ministry (BOOM) are underwriting a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program for interested clergy. Congregation-Based Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) teaches pastoral leadership and pastoral care for clergy and lay ministers in the church from a Bowen Family Systems Theory perspective. The 2014 summer/fall unit for Western New York/Pennsylvania is still in the planning stage but will run August through December of 2014 in either Cabot (PA) or Meadville (PA). 2014 – A new evaluation process begins and a training video is available on the Conference website at http://www.wpaumc.org/trainingvideo OR by contacting the District Office for a DVD of the training. This is the same DVD that was available at the SPRC workshops at Skill Day.

Mar/Apr is the time for the SPR Committee to complete section lll of the new evaluation form (8 questions), dealing with the “annual focus area”. Theology will be the focus area in 2014. May 15th – Deadline for submitting the completed evaluation form to your district office
