Our tongue is the organ

for tasting.

We can taste things

thanks to some little

bumps on our tongue

called taste buds.

Taste buds can detect

four tastes: sweet (like

the taste of sugar), salty

(like the taste of salt),

bitter (like the taste

of orange peel), and

sour (like the taste of a

lemon).

Taste

Many animals do not have taste in their

tongues but in some other parts of their

body. Bees, for example, have taste

receptors on their jaws, forelimbs,

and antennae. Butterflies have

them on their feet. Earthworms

have the whole body covered

with them. Octopuses have them

at the tip of their tentacles.

Each taste can be experienced

in different parts of the tongue:

sweet is at the tip of the tongue,

bitter is at the back, and on the

sides, sour and salty.

ANIMAL WORLD

Japanese have found a new taste called umami?

They say this is the most important taste when deciding if we like some

different food or not. It is naturally found in foods like dry-cured ham,

anchovies, soya sauce, asparagus, and even tomatoes.

The tongue of an ant bear

can extend up to one metre!

Our nose is the organ for smelling.

THE NOSE has two holes called nostrils

that can receive air from the outside.

Our sense of smell allows us to perceive

different smells.

Smell

The sense of smell in dogs is about 40 times better than humans’. They can detect smells from up to 12 metres underground.

Snakes do not use their tongue to taste food but to smell, that is why they flick it out so often.

ANIMAL WORLD

Bears have big and very developed noses. It is said they can smell a dead animal up to 20 kilometres away.

INCREDIBLE BUT REAL

It is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open?

experimentCustomise your clothes. Fill a basket with any herb you find, such as thyme, rosemary, fennel, laurel, lavender, mint. Smell them and wrap the one you like most in a piece of thick cloth and tie it with a string. If you like, you can mix some of the herbs and, this way, you will get a completely new and customized scented sachet. You can

lay it among your clothes to perfume them.

tiny hairs inside the nose that catch

bits of dust that are in the air. The

whole nasal cavity is lined with a

mucous membrane that warms and

moistens the air. The nasal cavity

has smell receptors that transmit the

sensations to the brain.
