At the start of the 19 th century, there was a young boy who lived with his parents in Ohio. He was growing up the same way most kids do and then one day he got sick. He got menin- gitis and had to stay in the hospital for a long time. When he got out everyone realized that he couldnt hear anymore. The meningitis had caused him to become deaf. When it was time for him to go to school, everyone decided it would be best if he went to a school with other deaf children. So he started at his new school with no friends. Day after day he went to class, but he felt really lonely. One day at recess he was sitting on a bench and a teacher came up and signed to him, asking him to come and play baseball with the other kids. The little boy was so happy! He went over to the baseball dia- mond, met some of the kids and started playing right away. He loved playing baseball. He went to school early to play base- ball, he got his homework done after school so he could play baseball and he stayed out every night until dark, playing base- ball. The teacher took a real interest in the little boy and showed him all kinds of things about the game; like how to hold his glove, how to swing the bat and how to slide into home plate. He loved going to the ball field and worked hard every day to get better and better. Well, the little boy grew up. He graduated from Ohio State School for the Deaf and went on to become a major league baseball player. In a particular game, William DummyHoy asked the umpires to gesture with their arms so he could under- stand the calls in the game. He asked them to sign. Many years later, having umpires sign the calls with their arms, became the norm and changed the game of baseball forever. Through that act of simple witness, William was an influence for change.

Fr. Paul’s

Ponderings...

Good morning/ evening my name is Mary Martin and I work for the Archdiocese of Detroit. Tonight, I’d like to share a re-flection on the Pastoral Letter from Archbishop Vigneron, Un-leash the Gospel. Earlier this month I gave a talk to some of your leaders here at St. Anne Parish. My presentation was luke-warm at best, so this time I want to start my reflection with a story and see if that works a little better. At the start of the 19th century, there was a young boy who lived with his parents in Ohio. He was growing up the same way most kids do and then one day he got sick. He got menin-gitis and had to stay in the hospital for a long time. When he got out everyone realized that he couldn’t hear anymore. He went over to the baseball dia-mond, met some of the kids and started playing right away. He loved playing baseball. He went to school early to play base-ball, he got his homework done after school so he could play baseball and he stayed out every night until dark, playing base-ball. In a particular game, William “Dummy” Hoy asked the umpires to gesture with their arms so he could under-stand the calls in the game. He asked them to sign. Many years later, having umpires sign the calls with their arms, became the norm and changed the game of baseball forever. Through that act of simple witness, William was an influence for change.

So what does all of this have to do with Unleash the Gospel and why do we need a road map and pastoral plan at St. Anne Parish and School? Just like the little boy in the story there’s a great teacher inviting us to join him, and his name is Jesus. He knows when we’re sad or feeling alone. He sees us sitting on the bench by ourselves. Just like the teacher coming over to the little boy, Jesus wants to lead us to something new and wonderful. William’s life was changed when he said YES to his teacher and gave baseball a try. That’s just like our life with Jesus: if we trust him enough to follow him, we’ll fall in love with him and want to pour our whole hearts into living the new life he gives us. We’ll want to pray more. We’ll want to study the Bible. And most of all we’ll hunger for that closeness with him in the Eucharist. As much as the little boy loved the teacher and never wanted to leave the game of baseball, we too would never miss a chance to come to the big game – Holy Mass – to encounter Jesus on the altar. At. St. Anne’s, our pastoral plan will help us Unleash the Gospel, right here in the parish. In the coming weeks, you can get involved in the worship commission to make Mass in-viting and holy. Volunteers on the Faith Formation commission will give our teachers and catechists opportunities to bring Jesus into the classrooms. If helping the poor and serving the community appeals to you, we’ll start a Christian Service Commission to bring the care of Jesus into the neighborhoods. God has loved each one of us into being. In our sin, we have each turned from Him but in His mercy, He sent Jesus to redeem us. Through Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross and resur-rection into heaven, he restored our relationship as adopted sons and daughters of the Fa-ther. God, our Father is waiting for us to turn back and accept all the love he wants to give us. He wants us to get up off the bench! Do you remember the hours that the little boy spent playing baseball, learning about base-ball and hanging out with his friends at the baseball diamond? He wanted to grow into the best baseball player ever. If we want to be the best disciples of Jesus, we have to grow. We need to get rid of our old, bad habits and start new, better ones. We have to be equipped with books, and podcasts and magazines that will help us learn. We have to practice things like saying the rosary, eating our meals together as a family and not fighting with our brothers and sisters. Every one of us is little William “Dummy” Hoy, sitting on the bench watching the other kids play. There is a teacher, a Savior, inviting us to encounter his grace and be trans-formed. He is also inviting us to witness to others, so they’ll want to learn about Jesus too. When we encounter the love of Jesus, we are changed forever and want to grow and learn so that we can become a band of joyful missionary disciples. The Pastoral Letter: Unleash the Gospel, gives us lots of direction and support on how to become a band of joyful, missionary disciples. Dare I say, it’s our playbook for the next 20 years in the Archdiocese of Detroit, and there are no bystanders. I encourage you to get your own copy of this inspired document. Read and study it.

So here is your Holy Homework. This week, parents and children decide how you will help your family encounter Jesus anew, teachers and coaches, how will you help our children grow as his disciples and seniors, singles and adults, consider new ways to witness his love and mercy to others. If we can do those three simple things, we will be unleashing the gos-pel here at St. Anne Parish and School. Let me finish, with a quote at the end of Unleash the Gospel, written by Archbishop Vigne-ron. “Where will the Archdiocese of Detroit be in 20 years? My hope is that it will be a commu-nity of joyful missionary disciples and of saints united in Jesus –…. and I invite every mem-ber of the church to join in as we follow where Christ leads. Not only the destination, but the journey itself is reason for encouragement and joy in the transformative power of the gospel. As Father Solanus always said, we thank God ahead of time for what he’s doing for us.”
