Pastoral Ponderings

Brothers and Sisters,

Four years ago we re-launched a church softball team.

The request was made to me in the receiving line following Sunday morning worship. I responded with enthusiasm.

Our on field performance the first few years was a little rough. There were a few highlights, but most of it was bad news

bears. Still, we had a lot of fun despite the long innings and consistent losses.

But, our long-time fans slowly began seeing hints of improvement. We went from being miserable to only periodically

painful.

This year we feared the season might be canceled by the pandemic. Understandably, Jefferson City Parks & Recreation

had to delay the start, but word soon came down that we would be playing. Practices were organized and something

strange happened: we looked pretty good. We started to whisper: "we might actually win."

Those hopes have been realized. We have begun our season 2-0! By the time you read this, a third victory may be added

to the tally. I am fervently praying more will follow.

Granted, we are still in D League. We probably aren't ready for stiffer competition. There's also nothing at stake. Nothing

of importance hinges on whether we win or lose, but despite little being on the line there is great meaning to our effort.

Here is a community of over 20 folks, all connected to the church, gathering together in common activity. We are

encouraging each other and celebrating together. If a loss comes our way, then we will mourn together and pick each

other up. People whose paths might not otherwise cross have been brought together in the dugout because of FCC.

Friendships are forming and deepening.

There's actually a lot to sports that looks like religion. John Sexton, the former president of New York University, writes in

his book Baseball as a Road to God that, "conversion is not for the faint of heart. It is a difficult process, requiring effort

and perseverance." He could easily be talking about our team's journey from failure to a modicum of success, or he

could be describing the life of faith as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Whether supporting each other as followers of Jesus or as players on a softball team, we need each other to bring out

the best in ourselves. I look better when our first baseman (or first basewoman) digs one of my errant throws out of the

dirt to transform an error into an out. I also look better when a fellow Christian challenges me to see Jesus in ways that

alter my perceptions or to use my talents in ways that are edifying to the church community's witness to the Gospel.

Church is a team sport. The conversion through coming to know Jesus better and following him with our lives is not for

the faint of heart. That difficult process, requiring effort and perseverance, is only possible because we are there to speak

God's life and wisdom to each other along the way. And when I metaphorically look around FCC, I am amazed by the

talent on our proverbial field. (continued pg 3)

ADMINISTRATIVE BOARD MEETING TUESDAY, JULY 14TH, 5:30PM ON ZOOM

Page 3: astoral Ponderings - FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH

River City Habitat for Humanity Home on Jackson Street

Dear church family, As you may recall, last year we received a gift of

property on Jackson Street from Loise White. After extensive research,

we determined the best use of it was to give it to River City Habitat for

Humanity and help them build a home there.

In January, we gave them $20,000 from our Community Ministry fund to

support this effort and promised to also support it with volunteer labor as

part of their blitz build in response to last year's tornado. We volunteered

to provide crews on the first Wednesday and third Saturday of each

month running into September when it was expected to complete the

homes. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic their plans needed to be

modified, but they will be continuing work on Loise's lot beginning on

July 1. This happens to be the first Wednesday, one of our days. We are

looking for at least half a dozen workers for each of our six days, July 1 &

18, August 5 & 15, and September 2 & 19.

Please contact John Blosser at 573-619-0803 or the church office to

volunteer. You need to be at least 18-years-old, and you will need to bring your lunch. Masks will be required, but will

be provided if you do not have one. We will work from about 7:45am until early afternoon. We encourage all who are

able to join us. If we have more volunteers than can be used on one home, we will work on a second home.

TRANSFORMATIONAL HOUSING

Dear Church Family,

The work to launch Transformational Housing - a new ministry aimed at providing affordable shelter to vulnerable

people in our area - continues, and First Christian remains intimately involved. One specific way this has happened is

by our Missions Team designating $28,000 from the Community Ministry Fund as a grant to be put towards work on

Transformational Housing's first unit at 203 Cherry St. This is seed money that will allow for renovating the interior of the

building, so that more families can be housed within the unit. Such an early investment promises to bear fruit for years to

come reflected in the lives changed by the families who will eventually call this property home and participate in this

ministry's programs.

Since last year's tornado, the lack of affordable housing has been prominently on our congregation's radar. Our

participation in this new ministry is partially the result of our congregational conversations that provided education

about both the reality of the need and potential responses aimed at meeting it.

Transformational Housing has been registered as a faith-based non-profit with a mission of providing below market

housing primarily to families. At this juncture, it enjoys support from multiple churches in the area, and outreach to

others is ongoing. The intention is to work closely with Habitat for Humanity, Common Ground, and Central Missouri

Community Action. A website will be up and running shortly, and additional details about how we can be involved as a

church, and you can be involved on an individual basis, will soon be available.

I was honored to be asked to serve as the new board president of this ministry, and I also remain the leader of our

congregation's Mission Team. For the sake of both transparency and propriety, I ceded the role of chair during the

presentation and debate about making this gift and will continue to recuse myself from any decisions regarding FCC's

future support of Transformational Housing, so long as I remain in these dual leadership roles. Thankfully, there is much

synergy, connection, support, and admiration across these two ministries as we collaborate together to glorify God.

PRAY EACH DAY

During this time, let us be intentional about praying for those who are affected by this global emergency.

SUNDAYS - Pray for those who are sick, whether at home, in hospitals, struggling to receive the care they need due to

shortage of equipment, beds, and supplies, isolated from loved ones, and unsure what the future holds. Pray for their healing

and for others to not get sick.

MONDAYS - Pray for the healers, all those who are making it possible for people to receive health care - cleaning staff,

nurses, technicians, doctors, therapists, chaplains, and administrators who are putting themselves at risk to care for others.

Pray for the researchers and experts who are seeking answers to difficult questions, treatments, and a vaccine.

TUESDAYS - Pray for workers, those who are working at "essential businesses" and making sure others have food and

other supplies and services, those who are unable to work right now because their workplaces have been closed and do not

know when they work again, for workers who do not have paid sick leave or childcare and must make difficult decisions.

Pray for safety and the easing of financial stress.

WEDNESDAYS - Pray for leaders - government leaders, corporate leaders, non-profit leaders, and all others who are

making decisions that affect large groups of people with changing information and multiple interests to juggle. May they lead

with wisdom and compassion.

THURSDAYS - Pray for educators and students who are finding new ways to teach and learn. Pray for students who

have lost their safe space due to school closures and teachers who are caring for students from afar. Pray for those who are

working to make sure students continue to be fed and have access to the resources they need and for parents who now have

to add teacher to their responsibilities.

FRIDAYS - Pray for the vulnerable such as those in our community who lack access to shelter, clean water and soap, a

place to isolate themselves, food, and other resources. Pray for those who do not have a safe place to go and for those with

health conditions that make them more susceptible to getting sick.

SATURDAYS - Pray for us all, whether we are alone or in a full house, we are facing major changes and stress. Pray for

those who are finding ways to help, those who are facing mental health struggles, those who are overwhelmed, scared, and

worried. Pray for all of us as we seek to make good choices for the benefit of our neighbors.

- Each meeting has a unique nine digit Meeting ID. You need this ID to find the right meeting. (If you are joining by

telephone you also need to know the telephone number to dial). First Christian Jefferson City's meeting ID is
