My Dear Friends,
As I write this letter, and if everything goes as planned, you will be reading this bulletin letter while in church. As of this weekend, we are resuming public Masses for our parishioners. It has been a long time in coming, but we are grateful to God that we are able to gather as a community once again around the altar of the Lord. There are some caveats to that sentiment, though. You will notice some changes this weekend and for the next several weeks.
First, I am adding a second vigil Mass at St. Maurice in order to help with the attendance at Masses. Since the “experts” say that large gatherings can be a source of exposure to the coronavirus, I am hoping that by adding another Mass we will be able to spread out the number of parishioners over four Masses so that people can be relaxed and not fearful of a large crowd. Also, there will be no ushers taking up a collection. We will have baskets around the church for you to place your weekly offering to minimize the possible exposure to the virus. For the time being, I will not be using Eucharistic Ministers at Mass, especially if the crowds are not large. Also, we will avoid the use of altar servers for the next several weeks. I apologize to my altar servers and their parents concerning this one. It is such a joy to have our young people assist at Mass as servers. As soon as it is safe once again to utilize our servers, I hope and pray that our current servers will return to this wonderful ministry. Since this virus seems to still be around, Archbishop Blair as suspended the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, and he is encouraging anyone who is older and anyone who has underlying medical conditions to consider not returning to Mass quite yet or maybe choose a daily Mass where the crowd size is considerably smaller. We will be providing music but there is some concern that congregational singing increases the possible exposure to the virus, so I ask you to allow Lou to be the voice in music for you, but if you are not sitting near anyone and you want to sing along softly, please use discretion.
Most importantly, I ask each of you to be patient and cautious as we return to Mass and also to be respectful and charitable to others. People are fearful, and people are opinionated. This can lead to confrontations. Jesus says, “Be not afraid” Let us all be cautious but let us all have a cheerful heart as well.
God bless, Fr. John
2020 Mission Cooperative Appeal Collection The 2020 Mission Cooperative Appeal Collection will be taken as a second collection the weekend of July 18 and 19. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, representatives are not able to be with us this year; however, although physically distant, we have the opportunity to be present for them though our spiritual and financial support. The ministries of The Archdiocese of Owerri, Nigeria will benefit from our parish’s generosity. Our assistance will help them upgrade hospital medical equipment and infrastructure and secure qualified medical professionals. There also is a great need for seminarian formation support, evangelization, and education efforts to youth and lay religious educators. Our sharing in response to Christ’s call that we “love one another” will bring His hope into the lives of many. We ask your generous response. There will be a collection basket marked specifically for the Mission Co-op. Checks may be made out to The Catholic Mission Aid Office. On their behalf, thank you.

*Please note that the extra Masses are a temporary addi on to our schedule to reduce the number of people gathered at one me. The 5:30p.m. and 12:10p.m. weekday and the 6p.m. Vigil Masses are temporary and will be celebrated through August.
Friends,
As Sunday Masses resume, I want to inform you about our hymnals. If you have been in either churches, you will notice the Red Worship Hymnal as well as the paperback Pew Missal 2020 have been removed. This was done during the first week of June before the Archdiocese permitted Daily Masses. Why? The handling of objects by parishioners in the pews, assuming no one is wearing gloves, is completely unsanitary and poses, I believe, some of the highest health risks to us all. There is no realistic way for people to wipe down each book after every Mass in each church as well as seeking volunteers to do so. The directives are clear, therefore, and have been followed: all hymnals have been removed. What about printed programs each week? This is simply not cost-effective and it is simply impossible to predict Mass attendance. But as many of you do enjoy following along with the readings and Mass Propers there is a plan. As you enter each church through the clearly marked entrances, you will be assigned an individual Pew Missal that will coded and numbered. This book is YOUR book. I suggest you keep it in your car to bring with you to church on the weekend and/or daily Mass. I will keep a master list in case the book is left behind so we can contact you, it can
be sanitized, and returned. *Important to note*: there will be limited visitor copies in the entryway of the church that will be cleaned after each Mass, so please do not forget your copy. It will take several weeks to assign a book to each parishioner, and we have enough Pew Missals to provide several per family. If you have any questions about this policy, please see me after Mass. Thank you for your understanding, and be blessed. -Lou
While the Parish Office is still closed to the public, the staff is available
during regular office hours. As always, you may email or leave a
voicemail after hours and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
Our CT Instant Lottery Ticket Raffle drawing will now be held on Thu. Oct 22 in the hall at St. Jerome Church. Details on the reception will follow as the date draws near. If you have already purchased tickets, they will be valid for the new drawing date, as we are not reprinting. Additional tickets may be purchased AFTER ALL WEEKEND MASSES beginning July 4 and 5 at the main entrances of both churches (outside, weather permitting).
Tickets are also available at the parish office, please call Joyce at 860-224-2411 to arrange a time for you to safely pick up tickets. Stubs and money may be dropped off at the parish office with prior notice. Please get the word out and help make this a great success! Thank you!
