Golf returns with powerful turbo modelFOR four generations now Volkswagenhas offered a high-performance Golf that is over and above the legendaryGTI and so it is with this, the Golf R.

Based on the current seventh-gen-eration Golf, the R sticks to a now-es-tablished recipe to distance it from itssibling; four-wheel-drive, turbochargedpower and a subtle, powerful look.

ThislatestGolf R hasbig alloywheels,a discreet bodykit and R badges onthe outside, while inside there are spe-cialsports seats, a fat three-spoke steer-ing wheel and some extra equipment.As before there is four-wheel-drive andthe 2.0-litre turbocharged engine dish-es 296bhp, making this comfortably themost powerful production Golf to date.

The standard Golf is sensitive tocolour and can look weedy on smallwheels, but the R has those problemslicked. Finished in the popular deepblue and on the optional 19-inch wheels(18-inchers are standard) it looks su-perb. Despite the added performancethe Golf R manages to be virtually aspracticalas thestandardcar. In thecab-in the space is excellent, with enoughhead and leg room to suit even the tall-est drivers while you can fit tall adultsin the rear seats too you can havethree or five door versions for familyaccess also.

Because of the four-wheel-drive bootroom is reduced,but only by37 litressothere is still a useful 343 litres on offer.

Like many modern performance carsthe Golf R offers a number of modes totailor the car to your current drivingstyle.

In Comfort mode the sensitivity of the accelerator and steering is backedoff and the exhaust is quiet, so otherthan a slightly firmer ride than thestandard it drivers much like a regularGolf, albeit with much more power.

However, switched into the most ag-gressive Race mode and the Golf R isa beast transformed. Fully extended itwill rocket to 62mph in under 5 secondswhen fitted with the DSG gearbox, ac-companied by a purposeful roar fromthe engine. If you still have childrenand want something that can still do

the dull stuff but be fun when the con-ditions are right, then the Golf R fitsthe bill perfectly. It is fast and fun andcapable.
