02Dear Readers,

The Aam Aadmi Party is not making it easy for just about anyone to join its ranks and stand for the elections on its behalf. They have created a 3-tier strict screening process for candidates, making it tougher for those with a corrupt agenda or a tainted past to even dream of representing the people of the nation.

Shouldn’t we as a Community strive for the same excellence in quality candidature? Forums like the recently concluded World Zoroastrian Congress

have shown us what quality candidates we could have if only we look beyond a pool of an obviously tainted, egocentric and power-hungry lot.

When Parsi Times covered a by-election two years ago, we saw many smaller candidates enter

and maybe even the right messages to spread, but their candidacy, however short lived showed us a number of things; they knew how important elections were, they knew they wanted to change the stalemate and the bipartisan politics within the Community and they knew that even without the slightest hope of winning they still had a right to stand and speak out. I raise my hat to them all.

The main BPP election is over a year away. Before the loud speakers that troll through the Colony begin to disrupt Sunday morning sleep with promises of food and not much else, (I remember this well from when I stayed in Salsette Colony! I was young and it was very, very irritating!) let us, the people of the Community make some noise.

Before you second guess yourself... no... you needn’t be an expert to make the right kind of noise. You don’t need to be a highly paid judge, a successful businessman, a powerful media baron or even a seasoned journalist to know that the elections deserve a fresh set of faces with no ties, family or

Community truly beat and have celebrated the reality of our folk. The aunties and uncles who live hand to mouth, the sports playing school kids and the hard working new business owners. We are hoping to see new candidates emerge, the kind that will understand the importance of being BPP Trustees.

- Should he be from a legacy family that already knows what it feels like to enjoy subservience of others or should he be a newbie who runs the risk of being carried away by the new found (and completely misplaced, in my opinion) adulation that BPP Trustees seem to gain overnight?

a background of professional expertise and an understanding of how to use other peoples’ money? - Should the candidate be young and enthusiastic or old and wise? Should the candidate be high on

morally competence and social work or a shrewd businessman, each with its own merits? There are a multitude of valid questions that desperately need to be answered before people begin

donating small amounts of funds to Colony events and such, so that they are assured votes later. (We seriously cannot go on being a Community that puts votes into boxes based on favours that were done for our families in the past decades).

So let us ASK these questions. Parsi Times is creating a forum under our popular column Parsi Point where we will explore our options and our varied opinions. Send us what you think and be featured for the rest of the Community to hear by emailing me on [email protected]. It is time

.

Maybe this editorial is written very early on and no one wants to think about the BPP natak just yet. People everywhere are becoming more aware of how powerful and how important it is to be the Aam Aadmi and we must too.

It is time that those seeking to be re-elected to carry on rotting legacies or even those seeking to be freshly elected and hopefully open their new (Parsi) Swiss Bank Accounts (but even Swiss Bank Accounts have lost their elitist sheen!) be threatened by the uncomfortably possibility that maybe, just maybe, we have really… truly… had enough and we want to work together to change the BPP. Mail me soon!

The launch of the second phase of Ahura Support in

the form of an OT Center was announced through a Workshop on Sunday morning of 5th January. It was conducted in a typically business like atmosphere, with an emphasis on substance rather than style.

Two therapist with over 15 years of work experience will be associated with the Ahura Centre. They gave a very practical presentation on various concepts and

treatments under OT. OT experts held all present in the Hall in rapt attention, with two crisp and relevant presentations. While Punita Solanki cleared the concepts

and misconceptions about OT, Pooja Mehta gave a talk relating to the developmental disorder spectrum and the

use of OT for the same. Those present had many questions and a demand for appointments at the end of the session, meant that there was enough conviction and belief generated by this presentation.

Parsi Point06SATURDAY, JANUARY 11, 2014

History of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) is a very informative book written by Mr. Sapur F. Desai in which the history for the period 1860-

chapter of the book places the actual birth of BPP to be between the years 1672 and 1675, sometime between 338 to 341 years earlier.

BPP has always enjoyed a position of pre-eminence in the Community. During its existence, it has by and large provided the Community with outstanding leadership & governance, women and men, everyone was proud of, individuals of standing & repute.

If the history of BPP were to be written from 1961 onwards to the present time, one can rest assured that as the years roll on, it would progressively project the institution and the individuals who run it in rather uncomplimentary fashion.

With the 10th World Zoroastrian Congress having now concluded, I am taking the opportunity of sharing a few thoughts and observations, not about the Congress - reams and reams is being written about it by the media and others - but my observations about the current standing of BPP and the need to restore its stature.

Ever since the differences between the present BPP Trustees erupted into the public domain, the entire Community has been witnessing an extremely messy situation the likes of which has never before been experienced.

The 10th World Zoroastrian Congress was the perfect opportunity to enhance the standing of BPP, showcase the capacity and capabilities of present Trustees as individuals that could rise to the occasion and display their competence in taking the Community forward. The opportunity was unfortunately completely wasted.

The Congress was salvaged due to the intervention of many individuals, but it was very sad, akin to a tragedy, to observe all the elected Trustees being relegated to the background during the Congress days. The Trustees had lost the opportunity to enhance the stature of BPP and themselves, of putting their stamp on the Congress for posterity. My sympathies were with the Trustees whenever I heard delegates making unkind comments about them during their internal discussions.

Managing the BPP is an extremely complex matter at the best of times; earlier celebrated Trustees with time, commitment, dedication, vision and experience have

From my experience of having been a Trustee of both BPP (12½ years) and WZO Trusts’ (22 years and continuing) I know how important it is, that for a Trust to

of any Trust should comprise likeminded individuals whose intention is only to serve, not to push their own ideologies.

My own self assessment is that as a Trustee of BPP my performance was mediocre on account of the Board not having been comprised of likeminded individuals, whereas in the instance of WZO Trusts’, it has been publicly acknowledged to be a different story altogether. This is simply because each one of us on the Board of WZO Trust and our band of volunteers work as a team, likeminded in our desire to serve the Community, in-spite of having differing ideological viewpoints.

Everyone talks about the necessity of restoring BPP to its past glory. As a former Trustee of BPP, I believe that is very much possible. However, if we genuinely wish to restore the stature of BPP what will be necessary to attain such a noble objective will require all concerned - leaders and lay Parsis - to display maturity and sagacity of a very high degree.

Three elections to BPP Trusteeship have taken place since the introduction of ‘universal adult franchise’ in 2008. It is a known fact that each of these have been contested very acrimoniously that has done no credit to the institution or to those who offered their candidature. In the run up to all the three elections, the focus was more on attacking opposing candidates, their track records & ideologies and less on projecting plans and strategies to service the Community. The electorate was induced with grand dining & entertainment events. The few assurances and undertakings that were given to the electorate during campaigning have been forgotten.

With the experience of the past three elections behind us, whenever the next bout of election or elections

are announced does anyone seriously believe that individuals with top notch credentials and standing, who genuinely wish to provide their time and talents to the Community will come forth and offer their candidature for Trusteeship? If individuals of outstanding calibre and experience shy away from offering their time and talents to BPP there can be no hope whatsoever to bring it back anywhere near to the esteemed position it once had.

Having been a Trustee of BPP for 12½ years I genuinely believe that it is absolutely imperative that all seven Trustees should be likeminded. I therefore recommend and appeal to all sections of our Community to consider that for the next election or elections, expected to be held in 2015 or earlier, we must consider requesting seven eminent Zoroastrians of Mumbai, acknowledged leaders in their respective professions, who are interested and willing to invest of their time and talent in the welfare of the Community to offer themselves as candidates for BPP Trusteeship.

A small group of individuals, selected from various segments of the Community can be entrusted the assignment to bring together such a group of candidates.

What will however be very important from the entire Community’s perspective is to ensure that these selected seven, women & men of standing, should be allowed to be elected Trustees without having to go through the

To me, such an action at this point of time seems be the only way to bring stability to the BPP Board and be

its past glory and stature. As a Community, whilst we are indeed very well

educated it is now time to establish that we are enlightened as well.

Finally, lest it be misunderstood, I must clarify I have penned the above simply because I care for my Community and its premier institution BPP. I do not have any personal agenda to pursue, and having already served the BPP for 12½ years I am not looking to be a Trustee once again. I do hope that what has been proposed will be considered by the Community in the positive spirit in which it has been written.

After a long long time, the residents of Captain Colony

decided to do something different and enjoyable for all. The brainstorming of a few like-minded individuals, gave birth to the idea of The Captain Colony Winter Fest 2013, which took place at The Recreation Centre hall in the colony, on Saturday, December 28, 2013.

This Idea of the residents, by the residents and for the residents received great response and saw people in large numbers from the Colony and various other baugs/colonies in the vicinity, visiting the fun, food and shopping stalls put up by the many entrepreneurs and

professionals. The stalls included delicious Parsi snacks/drinks/eateries as also yummy chocolates, desserts & pastries, art jewellery, garments, fancy envelopes, melamine tableware, religious books & items and a unique travel desk to satisfy the traveller in you!

This was as much a fun event as it was an endeavour to support the spirit of Entrepreneurship & Self-reliance amongst our young and not-so-young Zarathushtis and kindle the spirit of enterprise in them, as could be seen from the various items on display at the above mentioned stalls. A reference was also made of WZCC (World Zarathushti Chamber of Commerce) and the role it can play in helping, guiding and mentoring individuals, interested in starting out on their own.

The kids, especially had a gala time, playing fun games like, Bowling, Tailing the Donkey, Light-me-Up, Pick-me-Up and Seven Up Seven Down! There was something for everyone to enjoy and this showed in the cosmopolitan composition of the crowd which was cheering and enjoying themselves at the Fest.

There was also a LUCKY DRAW in which the lucky few took away a unique specially designed Coffee Mug with a Logo of the Fest printed on it.

The event was covered by Mr. Mazdiar Santoke for Facebook and by Mr. Cyrus Pooniwala who clicked some

City historian Deepak Rao, an avid fan of Irani cafes in the city shed some perspective about the cafe’s relevance to the area, “The building that houses the cafe is as old as the cafe; and Grant Road being a bustling place, Merwan has

always served as an important landmark in the city. Its signboard, wooden chairs, marble-top tables all of it, has been intact since it opened its shutters.

Grant Road is one of the oldest stations in the city, and there was a time when there would be a Hack Victoria (horse-driven carriages) and a taxi stand outside the station. Trains were known to stop at the station, just a little bit longer so people could buy

items from Merwan.Parsi Times spoke to with

partner Mr. Sarosh Irani of B. Merwan who explains the decision. He said, “We have no energy left with us for the bakery. We all have daughters who are busy with the work and have married lives. We are shutting shop because we don’t have time to give them and we are all over –aged people handling the bakery, we want to retire. It is a family decision to shut the bakery.”

The year 2014 is clearly a year of anticipation of all the right things

happening for our nation. While 2013 clearly belongs

to Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP. What he managed to pull off, in such a short time cannot be compared with any other event or occurrence in the independent history of India. On the other hand, it does not take away any credit from the “Aam Aadmi” of Dilli, who, fed up of the practices of the ruling parties over the past decades saw a glimmer of HOPE and

in the saddle. Not surprisingly he has knocked the wind out of the competition’s sails and his each move is being scrutinized carefully by the media, the competition… and the Aam Aadmi. Let’s all join in wishing him and his band of boys, all success in 2014 and going forward. What’s the most unthinkable thing that could actually happen

in this New Year??? Arvind Kejriwal could become the Prime Minister of India!!! You may laugh incredulously at the very suggestion, but the revolutionary success of the AAP in the Delhi elections shows it’s time to abandon conventional political logic and think… the once-unthinkable. Conventional analysis suggests that the next national government. will be headed by the BJP. But if the AAP can scale up nationally, conventional analysis will become just a HUGE heap of crap….

And now some “Rocket Science” speak - Finally India can proudly claim membership to a very exclusive group of 6 countries after successfully launching the (Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) or GSLV D5 satellite. Our scientists at ISRO have successfully used an indigenous cryogenic engine for this launch. Interestingly, the team working on this project had nicknamed it “The Naughty Boy”. That’s because of its dismal record – of the seven GSLV missions since April 18th of 2001, only two were completely successful, one partially successful and four failures. The joke doing the rounds at ISRO was that “this rocket was fonder of the sea than the sky.” All the four failed attempts saw it take off

and then nose dive straight into the sea, rather than head for space which it had been made for. After this success that moniker has changed to “Obedient Boy”.

Good tidings are coming in thick and fast – Malala Yousafzai, the gutsy 16 year old girl

f r o m Pakistan’s Swat Valley, who braved the gunshot of the Taliban for encouraging female education and literacy will be in Pune on the 10th, Friday. She will be speaking about “women’s education, Indian youth and the importance of politics in society amongst youngsters. She aspires to be a politician in the near future, so she wanted to share her views about it with our students” informs Rahul Karad, founder and convener of the event. Due to

security concerns, the entire programme will be controlled by the authorities of the UN and the Government. of India. Even her travel plans are being kept secret.

Tata Group Chairman emeritus Ratan Tata

India will re-emerge as an economic power. “I have always been hopeful and

re-emerge again as an economic power. The

issue of transparency and integrity is an important one and I am glad there is focus given by organizations.”

Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit,

Kapil Sharma and Ranveer Singh are sure to lose some

fans in the immediate future. They were

Saifee, in UP and were seen gyrating to something called the Nagin Dance with the the lyrics “man–se–mulayam” on the 8th of January. Nothing wrong with that … except they were there at the invitation of Mulayam Singh Yadav and his CM son Akhilesh Yadav, who have been in the news of late for all the wrong reasons. Just a few hundred miles away from their hometown Saifee is

Muzaffarnagar. Atleast 4000 riot victims are huddled in relief camps there and people are dying daily due to the cold weather and pathetic conditions, at last count 36 children . Good enough reason for the ruling party to indulge in debauchery. When asked why? MSY said “Nothing wrong with celebrating, this is our annual tradition”. And the same afternoon, 9 ministers from UP left on a junket to exotic locations on a “Study Tour”, estimated cost per person Rs. 4.20 crores of YOUR money. With such behavior being condoned by the “ruling party” the elections round the corner are bound to throw up surprising results. The Aam aadmi of the nation has had ENOUGH!!!

Finally the ex-SC judge A. K. Ganguly has stepped down from heading the WBHRC as well as the Board of other judicial institutions of Bengal under increasing pressure for his crude attempt at violating a law intern. And Tarun Tejpal’s police remand has been extended again. All this is indicative of a rise of zero tolerance in our country

Representatives of various Chapters from UK, USA, Canada, Dubai, Iran Mumbai, Pune etc. participated enthusiastically, mainly with the prime objective of proliferation of Trade, Commerce, Industry, Entrepreneurship and professionalism.

The meet took off with the welcome address by the Global president Mr. Minoo R. Shroff who specially welcomed the overseas members who

had come to Mumbai to attend this meet. The meet started with the observance of a minutes silence in memory of WZCC’s past president Mr. Bomy Boyce who passed away in Toronto on December 25th, 2013.

Mr. Shroff in his opening address mentioned that in today’s scenario there is a deceleration of employment and job opportunities are not many and many employees are being laid off. Hence the key to Success, especially for the youth is “Entrepreneurship”. He advised the youth not to sit in the comfort zone of their jobs, but forge ahead, and take on the new opportunities that are forth coming, mainly in India.

He advised the parents to motivate their children to venture into business and grab the available

their belly and take the plunge. Our community has a legacy of Entrepreneurs and the spirit of Entrepreneurship has to be rekindled.

He mentioned that although ”funding” was available from various sectors eg: “Venture Capital Scheme” of BPP; unfortunately there are very few takers.

The world economy is still in a tepid state. India is supercharged with excitement about the possible change of guard after the 2014 elections leading to change in economic policies.

Yet there is a new burst for entrepreneurship globally due to shrinkage of jobs in the organized sector. In India Entrepreneur courses are increasingly preferred even by engineering and technical graduates with greater participation by women.

Globally entrepreneurship, business and professions, is rising in smaller town and cities. This is especially so in emerging countries where urbanization is creating a new class of young aspirants. He then added that “WE” Women Entrepreneurs Wing was launched by WZCC about two years ago has got off to a very good start. It organizes programmes from time to time to involve participation of women entrepreneurs. It has evoked enormous interest both in Mumbai and Pune.

WZCC has also worked out a collaborative arrangement with “TIE”, the internationally renowned organization for arranging joint programmes and affording opportunities for our member to participate in their very instructive programmes. We also have collaboration with IMC, the leading body of businessmen in Mumbai and we get regular invites for our members to attend their programmes and network.

He further emphasized that WZCC has tried its best to inspire our youth to be more daring and step out. However they are still very hesitant, opting for secured jobs. One can only facilitate and empower. In this endeavour WZCC earnestly seek the cooperation and willing support of all those who have made successful careers in business and profession to join us by offering to train, counsel, mentor. Their willing

Yummy for your Tummy! 15SATURDAY, JANUARY 11, 2014

I have a recurring problem and it doesn’t seem to get resolved. The main

problem I have is that while older restaurants offering good food, they are inconsistent with their dishes and the newer ones are extremely lackluster and charge an arm and a leg for a meal.

After a long time I came across a restaurant tucked away in Bombay Central that pleasantly surprised me. Rivaaz- the Indian cuisine restaurant in the newly

going back to very soon. It’s a lovely restaurant with simple wooden interiors and extremely polite staff. The best part is their food. I’m told the hotel has been around for many years but has recently been

revamped so this restaurant is a new addition. The mutton sheekh kebabs are excellent served with a green chutney but it’s best eaten with one of their in-house spicy yet

tangy chili pickle. It’s their own concoction of sugar,

tamaranind, spice and a lot more and its reminds me

of an Indian version of the sweet and spicy dipping sauce that accompany most Thai dishes. Their Paya soup is warm and thick and light option for those

w h o e n j o y

paya. My favourite starter is their butter garlic prawn. It isn’t the most

is it delicious. Rivaaz is also extremely generous with their butter, garlic and their prawns! The lassooni Tandoori pomfret is equally tasty but in case you want something tangier or spicier than they have a chutney version as well.

The mains list various gravies and rice dishes and even a special for every day of the week but we picked 3 dishes for our main course and spent a fair amount

of time assessing which one was our favourite. The Firozpur Jingha, which is prawn in a tomato onion gravy base, is a brilliant dish and I’m so glad my server recommended it. There is no great secret

appeal to me and one of my favourite ingredients prawn. It’s got a lovely crunch to the gravy

as well from the chopped onion and garlic and though one would mop this bowl of deliciousness with a naan or roti I just ate it plain and enjoyed it even more. The Dal Rivaaz, which is their version of black daal is surprisingly not as heavy as I expected it to be and very tasty.

The one dish this restaurant seems to take very seriously is their Biryani and as I’m told by my extremely enthusiastic waiter, they prepare fresh dum biryani everyday. Their dum ghost biryani is wonderful with fragrant rice and soft tender meat but since I’m a prawn lover next time here I’m going to try their jingha biryani.

so rasmalai, gulab jamun and a signature dish of ice-cream, fruit, jelly called ‘Rivaaz Sundae’ made a special appearance.

Apart from a great meal, I realise that this restaurant is very competitively priced. In fact their

combination of good food, pleasant ambience and affordable pricing is extremely attractive and makes it an ideal destination for an occasion meal like taking the family out for your birthday or even e n t e r t a i n i n g some clients during a w o r k i n g lunch. The hotel has more than 80 rooms and some sleek banquet halls making it another great location for functions and if the catering will be anything like the meal I had, I’ll be glad to attend any function here.

Rivaaz, is not the best Indian restaurant in the

I have enjoyed. It gives me some hope that there are restaurants who still believe in a good meal at a decent price and if this is any indication then I’m certainly coming back, not just for more but to try out their other restaurants as well.

More often known as The Tiny Taster, she’s decided to take the world by storm - one plate at a time.

We read earlier in the introduction to the Sassanian Dynasty

that Ardeshir Papekan who was married to Ardawan’s daughter had defeated and killed Ardawan in the battle at Hormazdgan near Susiana. Ardeshir Papekan, Artaxerxes I, became the lawful possessor

of last of the Parthian King Ardawan’s throne and his crown (in AD 212 according to Sir Denison Ross, but Noldke and many others give the date as AD 224) and proclaimed himself King of Kings and Shahanshah-i-Eran.

Rawlinson feels that Ardeshir, a vassal of Ardawan had commenced his career by annexing Carmania and some outlaying provinces of Media. It was only then that Ardawan had roused himself into action against his revolting vassal, but it was too late.

When victorious Ardeshir

was returning to Pars he founded the city which he named Khurrah-e-Ardeshir with its beautiful palaces and gardens. It is the modern Firuzabad. Like all the other Zoroastrian rulers, he too encouraged agriculture by having canals dug from a broad river, to irrigate the land and make it fertile and green. A Fire-Temple was erected on the banks of the river. The feast of Jashne Sadeh and Jashne Meherangan was celebrated once again.

Soon, after Ardeshir became the king, he led an expedition against the Kurds of Mount

Masius. The Kurds greatly outnumbered the Persians who were routed, but Ardeshir gathered a forces of three thousand horsemen and a thousand archers he made a surprise attack at night and defeated the Kurds.

His next adventure was in the province of Kerman. Karman was not an easy target but after a considerable loss of

men-power and use of ruse and stratagem, he emerged victorious. Chief Haftanbokht (Haftwad of Shahnameh) was hanged and the treasure found there was dispatched to the city of Khurra-e-Ardeshir where a new Fire Temple was erected atop a mountain. Feasts of Sadeh and Meherangan were restored.

Whilst Ardeshir was busy in Kerman, one Mithroke-anosh-padan (Meherak of Shahnameh) of Jharom, took the advantage of his absence and gathering his troops he entered the capital city and plundered the palace. When Ardeshir approached the city the usurper, without offering any resistance, hid himself, but he was caught and executed.

In AD 226, at his coronation at Ctesiphon, (now Bagdad), Ardeshir sat on the imperial ivory throne and assumed the imperial crown and gorz (mace/scepter) in hand. His adopted the title “King of Kings”. Gibbons explains “These pompous the titles, instead of gratify the vanity of the Persian, served only to admonish him of

soul the ambition of restoring, in their full splendor the religion and Empire of Cyrus.

Over the years, Ardeshir undertook several campaigns and expanded his new Empire to the East and the Northwest. He conquered Sistan, Gorgan (Khosrasan), Margiana, (in Turkmenistan), Balkh, Chorasmia, and Mosul. The kings of Turan Makran, and Kushan sent their envoys to declare their allegiance to Ardeshir and accepted him as their overlord. Ardeshir’s rise saw the fall and the decay of the Kushan and the Andhra powers in India. Indians have not viewed this kindly and rightly so.

According to Gibbon, “Ardeshir won some easy victories over the Scythians and the ‘effeminate’ Indians.” Rawlinson disagrees with him but in Shahnameh, Firdausi does mentions that Rum, Turkistan, Hind and Chinese Tartary, became (soft) as Rumi silk before Ardeshir. All accepted his sovereignty; none dared to oppose or challenge him and so tax and toll continued to pour into his coffers from every land. The allusion to the “Rumi silk” seems to come from a speech Ardeshir had delivered to his nobles that from Rum and Hind he took tribute and the world had grown like Rumi silk to him. Mr. F. D. J. Patuck, writing on the Sassanian coins mentions that the Byzantine and oriental historians assert that Ardeshir’s kingdom extended to Indus and Oxus.

The late Parthians king had two sons who had taken refuge under the king of Cabul. They sent a letter secretly to their sister who who was married to Ardeshir to kill her husband with a deadly Indian poison which they had sent along with the letter.

The queen waited for the chance to execute her evil designs. She got her chance one day when Ardeshir returned

home from a hunt very tired. The queen offered him water in a topaz cup, some sugar, and

mixed the Indian poison. The king, after reciting the baj, was about to eat. The queen was very nervous. suspecting something was amiss Ardeshir called for four fowls and fed them with morsels of the served meal. The fowls all died. According to Karnamak-i Ardeshir-i Papakan, just as Ardeshir was about to drink, the sacred Fire Adar descended on the cup as a red hawk and the cup fell from the king’s hand.

Ardeshir summoned the head priest and asked him, “What punishment is meet for a woman who contrives her husband’s death. The wise head priest whose name was Tabari replied, “She who attempts to kill her husband is worthy of death and must be beheaded. Ardeshir ordered the woman to be executed.

This would have been the end of the conniving queen had she not informed wise head priest that she was pregnant. Tabari went to the king to inform him of the condemned queen’s condition and requested him to postpone the execution until her child was born. The angry king replied, “Don’t stay for a moment; kill her!” The far-sighted Priest realized that the king was without an heir, and though full of wrath at the moment, he may regret his decision later.

The priest kept the queen in in an isolated place. None knew of her existence. After several months the queen delivered a son. Tabari named him Shapur, son of Shah. He brought him up in his care for seven years.

One day the high priest found his king in a depressed state. He inquired of the king the reason for his solicitude. He said, “O King! May thy soul triumph over thy care and grief! Now it is time for joy and wine and not for sadness. All the seven regions of the Earth are under thy sway.” Ardeshir replied, “ My holy and faithful minister, I have rid my land of

been crying lack of funds donate generously to the public since a decade has put in a useless cost of more than 1 lakh to install CCTV cameras totalling 8 in number at various crucial spots but I fail to understand for what. What are the Trustees looking at an empty Agiary. Can a Holy place like an Agiary have cameras installed in

doubt and even if yes why does big Agiaries of Mumbai which have full day clientile like Rustam Faramna Dadar, Sethna Tardeo, Tata Bandra, Aslaji Grant Road. Not have these cameras. In my opinion these cameras would be to much better use there than here. This futile and high expenditure which is against tradition and totally unorthodox is questionable and should be known to the public.Faredun Guzder.

Dear Editor,Humanity itself has many

meanings like Kindness or Mercy or attribute or benevolence but the main

someone in need. We Humans in today’s world have no time to go ahead and help someone. All we think of is of ourselves only like what are we going to eat, where are we partying tonight, what clothes should we buy but we never think of someone who needs our help.

Life is a very short cycle so we should live each day as it comes and live it to the fullest. But where is the kindness or the approach to help others gone? It is all lost in vain in today’s fast world.

A few days back at Fountain, I saw this young girl stand at the signal with a bag in one hand, an umbrella in the other and a walking stick which she was managing to hold on. It was pouring heavily and when I looked closely I realized that the girl was Blind. I made my way across through her and in that time I saw multiple number of people pass by her, staring at her but not one of them stopped to assist her. She kept standing quiety in the rain with a thought in her mind for someone to help her but all hope lost. I went upto her and asked her where her destination was. She told me that she wanted to cross the road and go in the Bank on the opposite side. I held her hand and waited for the signal to turn RED. As it turned RED, I took her with me slowly making our way across the Zebra crossing to the other side but the rains

She kept asking me “Madam you must be getting wet”. And in turn I told her “It is not only me getting wet but you too.” We reached the opposite side and I dropped her at the entrance of the Bank. The minute she entered the Bank, the security picked up her bag and umbrella and helped her

to walk in. She turned around and

told me “Thank You, May God Bless You.” Those words made me feel bad and good. Bad because when people like her need our’help, there is no one to give them a helping hand and part away a few precious minutes but those same people might spend hours together wasting their time on BBM or Whats App. The Good part was that her “Thank You” made my day as it had just started and I felt on the top, of the world because I knew that I had done a good deed today.

Our time on earth is limited and every day counts and we should make the most of it and as Dalai Lama talks about the difference between pleasure and happiness. Pleasure is usually temporary and brought about by something external. Happiness is usually longer lasting. It begins by looking inward and is eventually brought out in to the world and shared with others. As human beings, we can focus on bringing about happiness in the world. Doing simple deeds like this will help us feel good within ourselves and will also make the world a better place.

And as we Bawas say we believe in 3 things. Good Thoughts, Good Words and Good Deeds. So let us keep

and another in order to bring peace to ourselves and to the ones who need it.Naznin Edulkaka.

towards crimes against women. More women are charging their superiors of rape and molestation after the laws were revised recently. It will take some time but the wheels have been set in motion. There is a good chance of reversal of the recent enforcement of the ancient and archaic Article 377 against the LGBT Community too.

And now something to make you smile in this new year straight from the TOI… “For most of us the word ‘jerk’ is a simple expletive, usually applied to someone behaving unreasonably. But Eric Schwitzgebel, a

philosophy professor at the University of California, goes

word. According to him, a jerk is “someone who fails to appropriately respect the individual perspectives of the people around him, treating them as tools or objects to be manipulated, or idiots to be dealt with, rather than as moral and epistemic peers with a variety of potentially valuable perspectives.” He also goes into great detail as to why a jerk is a jerk … phew!!! I wonder if he can

“Indicus Politicus”, the Indian Politician and he his welcome

“jerk”.
